Do the Blue Jays Have Anything the Astros Might Want?

Their closer is done for the year.  It's Tommy John surgery, meaning that they'll need a longer term solution that just this year.

"We're going to have (Ryan) back next year and some of those guys (closers) are carrying big contracts ... you don't have the luxury of carrying two closers next year," Ricciardi said.

"I just don't see us making a deal for a closer."

Send 'em Lidge if there's something (3B? CF?) that could improve the Astros.  Maybe even a starting pitcher if a package can be agreed.  I just don't know their roster well enough (at all) to propose a ridiculous trade.

If I was them I'd want Wheeler more- both are under club control- Lidge might have more upside- but Wheels could get the job done this year and then go into set up man at about a million per, whereas Lidge they'd have to trade or carry for at least 5 million with Ryan on the books at 9 million per.

Perhaps it's genuine, perhaps it's posturing to head off a dry humping.  How long is Lidge's contract?

I don't suppose Wells or Glaus are available...

If Lidge is truly "back", then this is the obvious alternative.  I just thought Lidge is more of an impact player, but given their position they may not want to risk him and/or that much money.  I don't think that Wheeler / Ensberg gets you Glaus (even if he is available, which is doubtful) whereas Lidge / Ensberg (+ PTBNL) might.

Just this year is Lidge's contract- but like I said- if you want him next year you have to pay at least 5,000,000, or whatever you can get him for in arbitration. You can't cut his salary by more than 15% I believe, while under club control

Thus he would be a 1 year commitment for the Jays, which fits that one criterion.  So, what do they have that the Astros need that they might be willing to part with for a Lidge-plus package?

They won't be interested in giving up Wells. Signing him this winter was their affirmation that he is the cornerstone that the club will be built around.

More bad news for the Jays:

Jays' Halladay out 4-6 weeks

They already had plenty of pitching problems.  Maybe they'll give up and start looking to unload salary.  Like Glaus perhaps.  I know he's got a no-trade, but he might be persuaded to waive it.

Yikes. Kinda reminiscent of Sean Casey in the playoffs last year.
