ACL - Non bb
« on: May 10, 2007, 10:23:10 am »
I thought of a couple of you gentlemen when I saw this.  I especially thought of Limey because of Arctic Monkeys.

I choked on my coffee when I saw that on the front page of today's Statesman.

Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, Yo La Tengo, and Dylan?

Oh. my. god.

The Monkeys' new album is pretty good.  Not much development from their debut, but what do you expect when they're all still under 20!  The Arcade Fire are great.  Crowded House?  WTF?!!!

All set with tickets and travel. What a lineup.

I would go see Billy Joe Shaver then take off.  The rest seem... not so good?

What's also weird is that at Coachella, Crowded House performed on the same stage just before Rage Against the Machine's first show in years. Talk about a strange transition.

Music in the order they listed it, that me likey:

Dylan, The White Stripes, The Killers, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Muse, My Morning Jacket, Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Gotan Project, Joss Stone, Spoon, The Decemberists, Regina Spektor, Amy Winehouse, Steve Earle, Kaiser Chiefs, LCD Soundsystem, Ben Kweller, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Andrew Bird, Pete Yorn, Peter Bjorn and John, Yo La Tengo, Blonde Redhead, The National, along with tons of other bands to discover.

Of those, I'm personally probably most psyched to see LCD Soundsystem, The White Stripes, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Ben Kweller, Yo La Tengo, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Spoon and The National.

The entire ACL lineup is pretty amazing. Hopefully it won't be 103 degrees with a side of duststorm.

I'll probably skip the festival and go to the aftershows instead.

Yeah, a festival like ACL is nice 'cause it's the only way to get that much good music in one place. On the downside, each group usually only plays for 30 minutes max and you might be standing a mile away in a giant, crowded field.

50 to 75 minutes is the norm for early acts, 1:30 to 2:00 for headliners.

That's not bad. The sets must seem shorter than they really are.

bingo ... I'd much rather see a full show of a few bands rather than short set glimpses of 15 with average sound in 100 degree heat ... just me though ...

Yep.  That's the "Where do ya want it?" referred to earlier.

Gonna miss this year's fest, been to the last 3.  Always had a great time, even during the 102 degree dustbowl a couple years ago.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

I'm definitely going to check out The White Stripes. The Racantours in '06 was the best ACL show I have ever seen (And I have been to every one.) I'm also looking forward to seeing The Killers again. I just saw them at The Erwin Center last month and they were phenomenal! Speaking of music....check out some of my songs at www.myspace.com/ericheardmusic

Great line-up! I don't think I'll go this year though, too much residual angst from last year. I really like the music but hate the food & beverage situation and, well, I always seem to accidently find some unshowered, wife-beater wearing, clove cigarette chain smoking, too-tall, and toothless, po'bucker' to stand behind. I'm sure that guy will be back... he's there every year. He's like that cartoon dog Droopy, he's everywhere.

I will go to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in SF http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/2006/schedule.cgi?show=day this year. It's the throwback festival. Some billionaire republican foots the bill?!?!?! In San Francisco?!?!? No sponsors, it's free, bring a ice chest filled with beer and food. Come and go as you please. No line-up announced yet, and it would never compare to ACL in terms of magnitude, but it's in Golden Gate Park and FREE! Last year was great.

Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

That song sounds like someone sampled about 100 songs off of Amazon.com, maybe 2 from each genre, and stuck them all together.

Its interesting, but wierd.

True, it's a little strange. Here's one from LCD Soundsystem, also playing at ACL. They seem to be a group that a lot of people are looking forward to:

Obviously Arcade Fire, Wilco, Dylan, Spoon, Yo La tengo are going to be great … they all put on fantastic shows when I’ve seen them …  But if your there check out some of the lesser known local Texas fare … as good as any - Midlake, Ghostland Observatory, and sound team … all great … ghostland puts on as good a show as anyone on the bill (not to mention their tunes are effing awesome) … soundteam is a really good band especially if you dig arcade fire, spoon, and clap your hands .... and Midlake's song roscoe is as good as I've heard in a couple of years ...

I love reading the bill every year and seeing a band like ghostland observatory next to a band like crosscanadian rag weed … possibly one of my favorite bands and one of my least … like reading the Decembrists and then the indigo girls … I suppose that’s variety ...

I kind of preferential to Meg to be honest. Similarly, I am looking forward to Amy Winehouse. That's if she actually turns up. My money's on the answer to that question's being no, no, NO.
