Pence in right field...
« on: April 12, 2007, 01:38:07 pm »
Saw my first Express game of the year Tuesday and Hunter was in right with Bruntlett in center.  What is up with that???

Could this be a sign that they are getting ready to bring Bruntlett up to "relieve" Burke a little?

Hunter was in RF last night too, with Bruntlett in CF.

"Bruntlett is just solid", you know.

Who would they send down, get rid of?  Maybe a trade is brewing.

Or maybe they are just keeping their options open. If Burke went down with an injury there is no clear replacement on 25 man roster.

Maybe they are packaging Lane and Burke for a #3 pitcher (moving Woody to #4).

Now I like the way you are thinking.

Brian Moehler, the 12th pitcher, has exactly one frickin' inning pitched. How many games would Bruntlett have been in if Garner had decided to only keep 11 pitchers?

Hunter getting reacquainted with RF may mean that M-Rod is getting closer to coming back into the fold.  Mike Rodriquez and Brooks Conrad are good players and it would be ashame to have them waste a year as minor league fodder.  Neither one of them coming up to the majors would surprise me, the same with Bruntlett because all three are fine role players that could help a major league team as utility guys.

Pence needs to stay a starter wherever he goes and it looks like a good long while for now, same with Neive.

BTW, noticed that Pence has an interesting/unique throwing motion.  I know he has a good arm but it looked like he short arms the throw a little just fwiw.

He throws like a girl. I done tolt yall that.

If Lane and Burke would fetch the Astros a real, live #3 starter, well, there's a GM I'd like to keep trading with.

Do you think you could give some scenarios as to how you think this would happen?

I can't recall ever seeing anybody throw like that from the outfield.

No, I can't.

But I do think that Bruntlett, Conrad and Mike Rodriquez would not be a hestitation for Purpura to call up if a need arises for a utility guy.  Hence you have to keep those guys ready at AAA.  Hunter Pence is a callup for an everyday job and the same with Nieve.  Both will have to advance that way and that may mean a little longer stay in the minors than Bruntlett, Conrad or Rodriquez, or even Estrada for that matter.

i'm telling you, Pence cannot even see "ready" on the horizon. he is a work in progress.

I agree wholeheartedly. I saw him up close at ST. I didn't think that he looked ready even though he was having a great game at the plate. ST is just different. Pitchers throw differently. They work on mechanics; experiment; practice, etc. I'd love for him to be ready now because we're in need in CF. But that would be a mistake, in my judgment. He'd be overmatched at the plate by 1-3's easily.

I think the few guys on the 25-man who could be sent down are playing well enough to stay.  So unless Purp makes a trade, I guess no one from RR will be coming up soon unless there's an injury requiring a DL stint.  Personally, it makes me nervous not having a good defensive backup for CF or SS on the team.  All spring I was hoping that Purp would find a taker for Lane, clearing a spot for Bruntlett.

BTW, Bruntlett was also the emergency catcher in the past.  I noticed sometime during the Pirates series that Lamb came out to warm up the pitcher between innings once when Q was out in the bullpen.  Does that mean Lamb is now the emergency catcher?  I think he did do some catching in college.

Lamb actually caught a total of seven innings spread over 3 games with the stRangers five years ago.

Pence showed some signs of life last night: 3 ground ball hits, two to CF and one to RF. he nearly doubled his season's hit total.
