Rice area (non-bb)
« on: April 05, 2007, 12:01:46 pm »
Will be in Houston on Friday to do the college tour for daughter #1.  Afterward, plans are to do some time at the fine arts museum.  Any recommendations for dinner, etc. around Rice or the Galleria area (we seem to be missing those box seats to the Friday night game that Drayton promised us).  Thanks and i'll hang up and listen.

How much are you looking to spend and what type of food do you like- i've got a couple recomendations regarding that.

North of Rice at Dunlavy and Westhiemer is Mark's American Cuisine. Very good food, lovely setting. A bit on the  pricey side, but worth it, IMO. One of my favorite places.

If you aren't looking to go gourmet there's a Collina's in Rice Village that's decent if not stellar and relatively inexpensive.

The original Carrabba's is over on Kirby--that's always good.

If you win the lottery between now and then Damian's in Midtown is very tasty.

Italian in Rice Village- you can get out for about 30 a head at: Prego. I think they have some decent seafood as well there- really like that place.

I love Mark's, went there last night, but it is pricey, and not in the rice area/galleria.

Definately recomend Prego- it is right in Rice Village across the street from Mi Luna's, down the street from Texadelphia- by a half price bookstore.

I recommend Goode company seafood.  Right off of Kirby behind Houston's.  Get the Campachana (sp) for appetizer.

I love D'Amico's in the Village also.  http://www.damico-cafe.com

Went to Goode company seafood 2 weeks ago- it was absolutely outstanding.

I thought about recomending that but you had said Italian/seafood and you can't get the Italian portion at Goode's.

Spot on RE the appetizer at Goode as well.

I was super impressed.

No, Taco Shack.

I would actually prefer going to the game and eating ballpark stuff.

I recommend Paulie's on Westheimer just west of Woodhead, right across the street from Lanier Middle School. Really good food at an affordable price, but be warned that there's no wait service. The upside is you save yourself the tip.

For "Eye-tal-yun" food (the proper Texas pronunciation of I"talian"), you've received a number of good offers, including the original Carraba's and the outstanding Damian's...tad further away.

My call?  Buy your own bottle of wine and take in Collina's in Rice Village (also recommended within the thread).  You can buy the wine two doors down.

No, you won't think you've died and gone to "It-Lee" (the proper Texas pronunciation of "Italy"), but it's as solid a value as you'll find in that part of town.

Ooooo... I forgot about that one.  I haven't been there yet but people rave about it.

ETA:  IIRC, the one time we did try to go we showed up without a reservation on a Thurs/Fri/Sat evening and they laughed at us.  Something to consider...

And the museum is chock full o' pieces from NYC's Met.  Visiting Houston while home gets a face lift.

For Italian food (that's at a little bit of a premium but seriously geniune) go here.  You won't be sorry.

Good golly... that website is horrible.  Do they really need the midi music playing while you're trying to look at the menu?!

Never heard of the place so I'd like to try it, but...

*shudders*

Actually, the music thankfully turns off when you look at the menu.  Do it quickly!!

Prego's good, but expensive. Great pizza and calamari, which we lived on while our kitchen was torn out. It's on University.  There's a D'amico's deli on morningside that serves very traditional Italian that's cheaper than Prego and very good.

Our daughter's favorites are Indian food at Shiva on Times or Cuban food at El Meson on University, both of those get lots of neighborhood traffic and are less stuffy than Prego.  There's a very good, very small Vietnamese place, Miss Saigon Cafe, off Times.  Our favorite is pretty pricey, but stellar and a neighborhood favorite, Cafe Rabelais on Times.  Pretty casual, no reservations, get there at 6:15 or 8.  It's the best traditional French in houston.  They don't do veal kidneys cooked in their own fat or anything, but come to think of it that's just as well.

Have a great visit.  If you go by Martel tell my daughter hello.

Mark's really isn't the Rice neighborhood, and I've only been there a couple of times, but it just never clicked with me.  Hugo's is near there and it's pretty fun: it's interior Mexican mostly.  Also Cafe Montrose on Westheimer has good Belgian food and great Belgian beer.

I don't get over there very often anymore now that I live in Spring instead of in Montrose.  But it's still my favorite bar.  I was the first regular back in 1996, when they first opened (and several ownerships ago).  I'm trying to go more often as I'm now working a little closer and stopping there is more convenient.  And I'm not really a bocce player, I'm more of a "sit at the bar and shoot the shit with the guy on the stool next to me" kind of guy.

2nd Cafe Rabelais in the Village. Love that place.

For Italian, get a bottle and eat at Collina's.

Han's is cool, but it's kind of hippy-ish. Always people passing around a j out back. The bocce aspect is cool. I like the regular there that used to work in Shea as a peanut guy.

I forgot this place, it's really is good.  This time of year you can get sit outside, too, but it's tough to get in without a reservation.
