Cannot get a run on the board before the first out.  Happened now 5 6 7 times.  Had a couple of three-pitch, three-outs first innings too.  Strange, as I just went through the Stick D-Backs and Stick Jints in successive games.

Frustrated of Houston

Talk Zone / CB Bucknor Still Blows
« on: October 07, 2007, 03:12:10 pm »
He just blew the nth call of his career when Figgins went 1st to 3rd on Cabrera's single (Bot 3rd).  Figgins beat the throw with a good slide and Bucknor correctly signals safe.  But Figgins is off balance and sits back on his arse with both feet in the air and is clearly off the bag.  Lowell has kept his tag on Figgins, who is now clearly out, but I suppose Bucknor had gone back to chasing butterflies or something because he is uninterested in the Sawx protestations.

I don't give a crap who wins this game/series, but at least it should be won by the winner.  Bucknor makes that open to debate every time he takes the field.

Comcast to raise its rates on October 1.

So if I have the chronology right, Comcast takes over from Time Warner in June, cuts some channels telling me that I don't watch them because I have a DVR, gives ESPN HD for free and proclaims themselves the greatest thing since sliced bread because of this tiny price cut (ignoring the channel cuts, of course).  Now, three months later, they're putting their rates up by 6%.

Talk Zone / HEY! MOTORHEADS!
« on: August 27, 2007, 05:25:59 pm »
No, not fans of the moley one and his heavy metal beat combo, but fans of all things automotive.  The BBC's fabulous motoring magazine show, Top Gear, has come to BBC Americas.  It's on tonight at the time when the Astros would've been on if Purpura hadn't fucked up the schedule.  Ch. 226 on Comcast/TWC, back-to-back episodes at 7pm and 8pm.

The trio of presenters make this tons of fun.  Jeremy Clarkson is eminently quotable, and here's some of his sayings (some of which you might recognise because I've shamelessly plagiarised them recently):

"I'm sorry, but having a DB9 on the drive and not driving it is a bit like having Keira Knightley in your bed and sleeping on the couch. If you've got even half a scrotum it's not going to happen."

"We start tonight with the highlight of my childhood. It's the Ladybird Book of Motorcars from 1963, and as you would imagine it's full of rubbish really. Just endless boring grey shapes, until you get to page 40, where you find the Maserati 3500 GT. Now this for me, when I was little, was like kind of Jordan and Cameron Diaz. In a bath together.  With a Lightning jet fighter. And lots of jelly."

"[about Porsche Cayman S] There are many things I'd rather be doing than driving it, including waiting for Bernard Manning to come off stage in a sweaty nightclub, and then licking his back clean"

"The last time someone was as wrong as you, was when a politician stepped off an aeroplane in 1939 waving a piece of paper in the air saying there will be no war with Germany"

On the Alfa Romeo Brera..."I only have to imagine this in black, with tan leather and I'm nursing a semi!"

Illustrating the lack of power of a Boxster - 'It couldn't pull a greased stick out of a pig's bottom'

On the Vauxhall Vectra VXR:  "there is a word to describe this car: it begins with "s" and ends with "t" and its not "soot".
Hammond:"So its fairly terrible then?"
Clarkson:"Oh no...losing your leg is fairly terrible: this is another league of badness!"

"The Suzuki Wagon R should be avoided like unprotected sex with an Ethiopian transvestite"

"Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary... that's what gets you."

'The air conditioning in Lambos used to be an asthmatic sitting in the dashboard blowing at you through a straw'

"Koenigsegg are saying that the CCX is more comfortable. More comfortable than what... BEING STABBED?"

"The only person to ever look good in the back of a 4-seater convertible was Adolf Hitler"

"This is the Renault Espace, probably the best of the people carriers.  Not that that's much to shout about. That's like saying "Ooh good I've got syphilis, the BEST of the sexually transmitted diseases.""

(Mercedes CL S55) "Braking in this car is so brutal, it would be less painful to actually hit the tree you were trying to miss."

"I don't understand bus lanes. Why do poor people have to get to places quicker than I do?"

Clarkson's highway code on cyclists: 'trespassers in the motorcars domain, they do not pay road tax and therefore have no right to be on the road, some of them even believe they are going fast enough to not be an obstruction. Run them down to prove them wrong'

"I was reading The Mirror the other day and came across a letter from a reader who wrote, 'I was riding my bike to work when this red Ferrari pulled up next to me. Out of the window, Jeremy Clarkson shouted 'Get a car', and drove off.' What I actually said was, 'Get a car you hatchet faced, leaf-eating Nazi"

"Britain's nuclear submarines have been deemed unsafe...probably because they don't have wheel-chair access"

"If we are being honest HIV is a pathetic virus, it can only live in the air for 6seconds and does in 10 years what ebola does to you in 10 days"

"Now we get quite a lot of complaints that we don't feature enough affordable cars on the show......so we'll kick off tonight with the cheapest Ferrari of them all!"

On the Lotus Elise: "This car is more fun than the entire French air force crashing into a firework factory"

"Now as you can see I lost the battle to have two engines on the back because of three very important reasons. One: weight. This is 600 Lbs and that's the same as having a whole American sitting on the tailgate..."

"I would still buy the DB9 over this, and save myself the £60,000. The problem with this car is its gearbox, its just........"
Hammond:"THAT bad is it?"
Clarkson:"Oh no. Robert Mugabe is bad, this is in a whole different league!"

"In the olden days I always got the impression that TVR built a car, put it on sale, and then found out how it handled. Usually when one of their customers wrote to the factory complaining about how dead he was."

On the new TVR Sagaris:  "Oh, don't get me wrong, this one can still kill you.  It just doesn't feel like this one wants to."

Assessing Hammond's crash:
Clarkson:"you can see from the tape that the tyre is starting to come apart. now why didn't you spot that?!"
Hammond:"I had a lot on: I was doing 288 mph."
Clarkson: "What do you mean you had a lot on? I can be in the office on the phone, doing the paperwork, kids are shouting at me, wife etc, if a lion walks in, I'm going to notice it!"

"Sure it's quiet, for a diesel. But that's like being well-behaved...for a murderer."

"I don't often agree with the RSPCA as I believe it is an animals duty to be on my plate at supper time"

"There are footballers wives that would be happy with this quality of stitching... on their face"

"Racing cars which have been converted for road use never really work.  It's like making a hard core adult film, and then editing it so that it can be shown in British hotels. You'd just end up with a sort of half hour close up of some bloke's sweaty face. "

"Much more of a hoot to drive than you might imagine. Think of it, if you like, as a librarian with a G-string under the tweed. I do, and it helps."

"You cant have this car with a diesel, its like saying, I wont go to stringfellows tonight, I’ll get my mum to give me a lap dance, she's a woman!"

"During the break we got complaints that we don't show enough green cars so here's one..."  Pointing to a Lamborghini Murcielago... in bright green

"Honestly, I have seen more attractive gangrenous wounds than this. It has the sex appeal of a camel with gingivitis."  (Jeremy said this of the Porsche Cayenne!)

St. Arnold's runs a tour of their brewery every Saturday, starting at 1pm.  The cost is $5 and the beer is free (they aren't licensed at the brewery so they can't sell it).  Bring your own food, and bring a St. Arnold's glass (or buy one there) if you want a grown-up's serving.

Here's a less-than-informative video report by some bint at the Chronicle.

If you've never been, you may not realise that you can earn points by returning the cardboard sixer packs.  The points add up to store credit, or you can go for 200,000 packs and drive off in the tie-dyed Bentley.

I've never been on the tour, but I attend at least two private functions a year at the brewery.  They are relaxed and friendly and generous with the product!

We talked a lot yesterday about how the Astros have problems getting a team on the field that can hit and fill all the defensive positions.  Then, last night, Garner comes up with a doozy.

Talk Zone / The Iceman Cometh...The Iceman Striketh Out
« on: May 16, 2007, 09:12:51 am »
This is a bit of a retread from the GZ, but so what!

Iceberg is plumbing new lows with each plate appearance.  He strikes out 1 out of 4 times, and has now even stopped taking walks (0 in last 18 PAs), which presumably is a result of him trying to actually hit a ball.  His power is non-existent.

He has been sliding down into this pit of desperation ever since late 2005.  I felt very sorry for him in the 2005 playoffs.  He had been a major contributor, but in the WS in particular, his struggles took the bat out of Berkman's hand in what was a very tightly contested series.  The Astros were one hit a game away from reversing the sweep, and Iceberg took himself and Berkman out of the game.

2006 was a season of shit unlike any I remember from an everyday Astro, save perhaps Derek Bell.  In 2007, he is notably worse than he was in 2006.  We'll shortly be coming up on 2 full seasons of fuck all from Iceberg.  He can't start, can't pinch hit, and a 3B-only, defense-only specialist is a luxury no team can afford to carry.

I've had it with him.  D.F.A.

Looking at the schedule, there's a remote possibility that Sterry Bonds ties and/or passes Aaron in MMPUS.  More likely, however, is that he does it when the Astros are in SF for the return series.

I was in MMPUS for the single season record breaker, and it was awful.  I really don't want the Astros to be involved in another highly dubious milestone achieved by this cheat.

Talk Zone / Crappy Baserunning
« on: May 03, 2007, 10:47:27 pm »
Seemed to me that this team needs to make Baggie the base running coach, and have many players, Lee especially, doing drills.  Tonight's game was nearly lost due to the early profligacy resulting from terrible reads on the paths and snail-like speed around the bags.  This is why they can get so many hits, walks and free base runners, and get so few runs.

It's a fucking disgrace.

PS  It was sweet to double up Griffey to end it.  If he hadn't smoked that grounder, they'd never have turned it.

« on: April 30, 2007, 02:51:20 pm »
MILWAUKEE—In what Major League Baseball officials are calling a "long overdue correction of a gross oversight," Commissioner Bud Selig announced Tuesday the discovery that Hall of Famer Hank Aaron had in fact accumulated 50 previously unaccounted-for home runs during his illustrious 22-year baseball career, bringing his once record total of 755 to an even higher 805 and putting the all-time home-run record perhaps forever out of reach...

Biggio got BB #1 for '07.  Golf clap.

He got it from Saarloos who, other that a couple of ill-conceived hacks by Burke and Loretta, threw perhaps one or two actual strikes.

Berkman got a couple of right-handed singles.  Maybe he needs to do this full-time...

I am convinced that the Reds have spent the last few years trying to recreate the 2000 Astros.

Woody has been getting shelled by the Reds for years now, so lasy night is nothing to panic about.  They can mash, too!  Still, that doesn't stop me worrying about what we've got here, folks.

Eschewing walks as he is, he seems hell-bent on getting to 3k sometime in June.  Putting aside the widespread desire to see him get to that milestone, I like the idea of getting it out of the way...certainly before the trade deadline at the end of July.  That way, the team can evaluate its options and perhaps make a deal (no, I'm not suggesting they trade Biggio) that strengthens the team, unencumbered by the need to force Biggio in the starting line up.

Of course, if he keeps hitting like this, Burke's going to have another year to endure in the wilderness.

Talk Zone / Marlins To Cut Everyone To Pay For Miguel Cabrera?s Salary
« on: February 26, 2007, 12:32:52 pm »
From The Brushback:

MIAMI--Florida Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera won his arbitration hearing last week and was awarded a salary of $7.4 million, up from last year?s salary of $472,000. The Marlins, owners of the lowest payroll in baseball last year, plan to pay for the whopping increase by cutting everyone else on the team.

?We?re going to have to trim payroll pretty significantly here,? said GM Larry Beinfest. ?We?re already way over our desired payroll of $10 million, so, we?re sorry to report that every player on the team is being cut. Yea, that means Dontrelle, Dan Uggla, Hanley Ramirez, what?s-his-face in left field and that other guy with the chick?s name...Anibal. Anyway, they?re all gonzo, but I hope that doesn?t deter our fans from buying season tickets. Remember, a lot of people wrote us off before last season and we almost made the playoffs.?

Thanksgiving?  Nope.  Ashes Cricket!!!!

After the incredible drama of Summer 2005, when the heavily unfavoured England took back The Ahes from the hated Australia, the two sides lock up again, this time down under, to do it all over again.  England haven't won in Australia for over 20 years, but they hadn't beaten them in England for nearly 20 years before 2005 either.  The Aussie team remains as strong as ever while England have stumbled trough the intervening months.

For an in-depth review of the 2005 series, check out the Limey Time on the subject.  For this year's tests, check your local TV listings to find no mention of them at all.

From today's Guardian Fiver e-mail:

The Americans have tried almost everything to turn the masses on to soccer and away from their usual hobbies of eating, mullet-growing, eating and failing to comprehend irony. They set up the NASL, for example, and roped in crowd-pulling legends like Pele, George Best, Johan Cruyff and Ron Futcher. They've allowed pony-tailed preeners to top and tail the 1994 World Cup with laughable missed penalties. None of that really worked, however, so now they are going to play their trump card: David Beckham.

Beckham's contract at Real Madrid expires at the end of the season, and Major League Soccer flunkies are currently doing the math to see if bringing him to America would be financially justified: for him to be signed, they would have to alter their salary-cap rules, as at the moment no team can spend more than $1.9m per season on salary (insert your own that-wouldn't-cover-one-shanked-free-kick-from-Goldenswingers joke here. Please).

"This is a marketing opportunity," no-$hit-Sherlocked the MLS commissioner Don Garber, before offering his opinions on what bears do in woods. "We're doing analysis and we should complete that in the next 30 days," garbled Garber, leering needily at a nearby abacus. "Beckham is a cultural world icon - and if we can get him in this league, people will care and they'll come out and see our games. If we could have him here we think it would be terrific."

It would also be terrific for Beckham, who wouldn't have to rack up such monstrous phone bills chatting to Tom and Katie, and who could finally prioritise his first love, celebrity, over his second, football. "This is a guy who was one of the better players on the English national team during the World Cup," concluded Garber, efficiently shredding the smidgen of credibility he had, "so he is a player we think is very strong." Which is more than can be said for Beckham's career prospects, clearly.

That 2-up in the late innings, 2nd & 3rd and 1 out, you send the runner on contact because even if he's dead meat at the plate you'll still have 1st & 3rd.

Genius.  Now it takes a hit to score 1 run and an extra base hit to score 2, instead of scoring two on a single.  Either way you need a hit, but without stupidly erasing runners you can get 2 for 1.

What an idiot.

"Either they will return to postseason play . . . or their 2006 implosion will live in infamy. It will become the failure that all future failures are measured against.  Of course, they felt the same urgency Thursday night and allowed the Brewers blow them off the field. After this fiasco, are there any believers left in Cardinal Nation?

It is technically true that the Cards still control their fate. They could magically pull themselves together overnight and salvage the season.  They could come to the ballpark with renewed determination Friday. They could arrive with clear minds, light feet and a single-minded focus on winning.

Hey, it could happen. But it should have occurred Thursday and it didn't -? so there is no reason to believe this team has anything left."

Talk Zone / Anyone for a Three-Way?
« on: September 27, 2006, 05:44:03 pm »
My understanding (from lurking elsewhere) is that, in the event of a three-way tie in the Central (after the Jakes make up their game), the team with the best record within the division would get a bye while the other two play-off on Tuesday.  Then, the next day the bye team and play-off winner go at it for all the marbles.

Currently, against Central division opposition, STL is -3, CIN is +9 and the Astros are +11.  STL cannot catch either, so would be playing the preliminary round regardless.  The Astros can get to +13 (by completing a sweep of PIT) which would see off Cincy who close with Pittsburgh but can only get to +12.

Houston has won the coin toss for home field vs. the Jakes and those same Jakes would host any play-off with Cincy.  Anyone know if there's been a coin toss between the Astros and Reds?

Astros kick off 1 hour ahead of the Jakes tonight, and have a day game vs. STL's night game tomorrow.  Back to the 1 hour head start for Friday and Saturday, before the Jakes play a day game (after night game) on Sunday agead of the Astros' evening start.

Maybe this is all nonsense, but I quite like the idea of having the jump, timewise, on the Jakes, so long as the Astros use it to positive effect: i.e. post a lead before the jakes take the field.  Then on Sunday, the Astros get a full day's rest before playing - knowing exactly what they need to do.

Here's the head to heads:

2 out of 3 from the Brewers was the bare minimum.  If you think the bare minimum is enough, then ok.  But some people choose to do more and we encourage that, ok?  Now the Astros roll into New Jake City to see if they can make a charge for the division title as well as keeping up with the wild card race.  A bad week, and both will be lost causes.

The 3rds are in the process of backing in to the playoffs.  Losers of 6 of their last 10, 4 of their last 5, and 3 of their last 3.  They just dropped 3 of 4 to the Snakes; a series that included a 13-run mauling when Wandony Reyes gave up 7 runs in 2.1 innings, and a 1-hit, CG shut out spun by Webb.  That?s a whole lot of poop; they?re down and now would be a bad time to let these guys pick ?emselves up.

Projected Matchups

Andy Pettitte (13-13, 4.34) v. Chris Carpenter (13-6, 2.97)

Andy pitched a decent 6.1 innings against the Phillies last time out, giving up only 1 earnie, but got no decision as that one wasn?t decided until Lance ?The Decider? Berkman cleared the previously loaded bases with a double in the 9th.  Andy?s worked hard to square his record after a poor start and hasn?t lost a game for nearly a month.  He is the owner of the manhoods of some of the more annoying Jakes, including Shitstein (.256OBP), Comonds (.139BA), Pooholes (.200BA, .200SLG).  However, a number of others all hit Andy at a near or above .300 clip, these being Rolen (with the homies), Agent Wilson, Scott Spiggio and Re-Encarnaci?n.

The non-musical/anorexic member of The Carpenters has faced Houston twice this year, giving up 9 runs in 14 innings, good enough for a loss and an ND.  And that was back in the part of the year that didn?t matter and when the Astros were playing like dog shit.  Carp has a strange relationship with Berkman, in that he has him down at 5-21 (.238) but 4 of the 5 are homers giving Lance an incredible .857SLG%.  Bizarre or what!  Could be a day in the outfield for Lance as Lamb slaughters (get it?) Carpenter (1.219OPS) and MoBerg (6-21) is marginally better than Lane (3-12), but then who isn?t?.  Biggio is 9-25 but with 7 Ks and only one extra base hit, so I?m guessing that Craig manages to slap a low-and-away slider between 1st and 2nd every once in a while and one of ?em rolled to the wall.

Chris Sampson (1-0, 3.44) v. Jeff Weaver (6-14, 5.85)

I?m reluctant to use the words ?scratch? and ?Clemens? groin? in the same sentence, so I?ll leave it up to you to figure out why Sampson is starting this game.  On a personal note, I saw Sampson?s debut for the Astros:  a very credible 3 earnies in 5.1 innings against a high-scoring Reds offense.  Of course, that was a relief (in more ways than one) effort that followed Wandy laying the World?s Largest Turd on the mound at MMPUS.  Sampson?s only previous start was a win, very well earned with a 3-hit shut-out of the ridiculous Cubs in 7 innings.  He?s never seen the Jakes, so it?ll be an adventure for us all.

Weaver is annoying enough to make even reasonable people want to smack him.  He?s been pitching better of late and has got his ERA down to (yes, I said ?down to?) 5.85.  He got his first win for a month last time out (ironically the only victory in the 4-gamer vs. the Snakes).  We haven?t seen him against the Astros this year, but he?s 2-3 for his career in other colours.  Ausmus, Biggio, Lamb and Huff all hit him well ? Brad at .429!  Berkman is only 3-14 (1 HR), Everett is .167 and Wile E. Taveras is 0-7.

Roy Oswalt (12-8, 3.15) v. Jason Marquis (14-14, 5.66)

Roy?s last outing against the Jakes was a loss, coming out of the pen to pitch the 10th following a Lidge up that spoiled an Astro comeback sparked by Bidge?s 3-run shibby and Berkman?s 2-run single.  There?s not much else to say about Roy that wouldn?t be redundant.  He?s 6-5 in his career against the 3rds (should be 6-4).  He?s got a bit of Pooholes? stink on him (.333BA, 3 strutters) and Speckstein has a .375BA.  Encarnaci?n is another worry as is Spiggio.

Anthony Reyes, who dropped that huge bollock in Arizona, has been scratched because his arm is tired.  No shit.  So La Genius is trotting out a pitcher with a worse ERA, on short rest.  You can hear the gears churning in his head from here.  Marquis is one of those pitchers who you think is getting slammed, then you look up and he's got a quality start on the board.  7-3 with a near-5 ERA vs. Houston is that feeling expressed in numbers.  Having said that, we've seen him twice this year, and he's given up only 3 runs in 14.2 innings.  Berkman and Ensberg destroy Marquis, with 1.465 and 1.261 OPSs respectively.  Lane is 6-18 (.333) too.  Lamb is a disaster at 1-16 (.083).

Key injuries:

Houston
? Roger is still ?nursing? his crotchetorial regions; Backe?s elbow-knack has been cut upon; and Bagwell?s shoulder-knack is like the crease in his pants and the scowl on his visage: permanent.

Jeez Louise ? Mulder is spending the rest of the season out ?there? looking for the truth and Gitstein, mercifully, is DL?d with a torn oblique (probably a scrap-related injury).  Anaheim Jimmy isn?t on the DL, but hasn?t played since August 26, a trend I?d like to see continue.  His head is now so swollen that it is causing him physical problems.

Other shit

* This series is there for the taking.  The pitching match-ups seem to be marginally in the Astros? favour.  The Jakes will also be without Comonds (probably) and Fuckstein (for sure), have two weak links in their rotation going and a closer even more untrusting than Houston?s.  A sweep would throw this thing open wider than Paris Hilton?s legs in front of a video camera.

* Co Russa got ejected from the last game against the D-Backs for arguing balls and strikes.  Then watched from the dressing room as his team blew the 7-4 lead they had in the 7th, to lose 9-7.  Sounds like a perfect day!

Well, another trade deadline comes and goes, and all that happened is that SportsJustice showed himself to be King of the Ass Clowns at the Chronicle...again.  An amazing streak when you realise that the staff there includes Jose de Jesus H. Ortiz and John McLain, a man blessed with a face for radio, a voice for print and a brain good for nothing.  It seems to me that the personality trait required to be a Chronicle sportswriter is "arrogant fuckwit".  I'm surprised that none of these guys has yet been offered the job of managing the Mets.  Maybe they're holding out for the Cubs.

Anyway, with all that behind us now, it's off to San Diego with essentially the same club that we've had for...ohhh...days now.  Break out the strong Colombian* and be prepared for midnight meltdowns as the Astros take their collapsible bullpen to face the Pet Shop Boys.  If Garner's got any sense, he'll head over to TJ, grab a truck load of stiffy pills, crush the tablets up and rub the powder onto the bullpen's arms.

*Coffee.  Why?  What did you think I meant?

When:

Tuesday, August 1, 9:05pm CDT - KNWS
Wednesday, August 2, 9:05pm CDT - FSN
Thursday, August 3, 2:35pm CDT - FSN

MLB Extra Innings - You're on your own, kids.

Where:  Petco Park

San Diego is a truly beautiful place.  It's also full of sailors so you are guaranteed a shag if you like cock; just make sure he buys the drinks because it's fucking expensive.  Speaking of liking cock, the Pads just picked up Todd Walker from the Cubs following on from their acquisition of Scott Williamson.

Projected Matchups:

This could have been all over the place if The Count had actually traded Pettitte, Backe and Oswalt for Neifi Perez, but now Yahoo is suggesting that Gar will trot out that tired old trio of...wow...Pettitte, Backe and Oswalt!  Backe may be subbed for anyone from Albers to Brangelina's as yet unconceived second wunderkind, but the way the bullpen blows currently it doesn't much matter.

Andy Pettitte (9-11, 5.18) vs. Jake Peavy (5-10, 5.01)

Pettitte has been pretty solid for the last month or so (the relief loss notwithstanding), but hasn't been supported very much by the offense.  He's 1-1 lifetime vs. the Pads in 2 starts with a 4.50 ERA (10 innings, 5 earnies).  Not much to go on really.  He's 3-6 on the road with a 6+ ERA in 10 starts, which is a little bit more info.  None of it good.  However, of the current opposition with any kind of sample size of at-bats against Andy, only Brandy Alexander has hit him well:  14-46 with 7 walks and a shibby for a .304 BA, 4.07 OBP.

Peavy has been solid against Houston in his career, going 4-3 with a 2.56 ERA in 8 starts.  He should be happy to see this team rolling in to town because the rest of the league has been pounding him all year.  So far he's 5-10 with a 5.01 ERA overall, and his home form is an almost perfect sub-set of those numbers. He did have a quality outing against the Trolley Dodgers last time out, but was tagged for 7 runs in both his starts prior to that.  I can't see the Astros' bats suddenly figuring out how to hit Peavy, so this one might be a low scoring game at least until Andy gives way to his "relief" pitchers.

Brandon Backe (1-1, 5.82) vs. Woody Fucking Williams (4-2, 3.69)

Brandon may or may not be fit, but you know that he's not telling.  5 innings, 12 hits (none of them homers) and 5 earned runs is telling, however, and it says that Brandon has not yet got his stuff backe.  He has one career start against San Diego, which went well as he gave up 1 run in 5.2 innings for the win.  That wasn't this year, of course.  There's a real possibility of a series of roster moves prior to this game, none of which I'm prepared to discuss here because I really haven't been following the storylines.  Just be aware that all this talk of Backe may well be mute.

Opposing the Astros today will be Woody Wi...motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker.  Sorry.  He has a decent record against the As...shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket shitbucket.  Ah, bollocks to him.

Roy Oswalt (8-7, 3.29) vs. Clay Hensley (6-8, 4.46)

Other than his one bullpen appearance, which shall be forgiven because there's pall of suck that hangs over that place against which no one is immune, Roy has been rock solid.  His mouth has been more offensive than the bats supposedly supporting him, hence the near-.500 record.  His career numbers against San Diego are spectacular: 6-1, 2.44.  But, just as with every start for him this year, the result is all about the other 24 players on the roster as Roy will be Roy.

Clay Hensley turned down what would have been, with a name like that, a lucrative career in either the country or western music genres.  He's from Tomball so all he had to do was record a song that could be turned into a commercial for a truck, or beer, or both, and he'd be made.  How those advertising geniuses keep finding country songs that can be turned into truck commercials never ceases to amaze me.  But instead, Hensley chose baseball so that he can do things like pitch 6 innings of 2-run ball in Colorado...and still lose.  Whatever happens tonight, I expect he and Roy to hug and cry at the end.  Oh, he has a Blutarsky line against the Astros, the result of a 2-inning, scoreless, relief appearance.

Key Injuries:

Houston - Orlando Palmeiro (bereavement leave) and Jeff Bagwell (shoulder knack) will both join up with the team in San Diego.  Funny how there's never this rush to a road trip when they're in Milwaukee.  OP will likely be activated back to the bench, and Jeff will sit in the locker room and scowl at the hitters.

San Diego - Shawn (t)Estes went down with shoulder knack after his first start of the year and is done for 2006.  Crisco, according to the temporally challenged Yahoo web page, is due back in June from elbow knack.  Ben Johnson is on the 15-day with shoulder knack, but can come back any time he wants now (unlike the other Ben Johnson who was given an MLBesque lifetime ban that lasted about two years before he was allowed back only to be busted for cheating again and banned for life a second time).  Chan Ho Park has been DL'd with bellyache, but they're not saying if that's his or the team's.

By Limey

This week, I?ve been mostly watching the World Cup.

I?m subbing for Craig, who started to think about how much he hates the Rangers and his head exploded.  I?m posting this extra early because I?m going to be busy all day tomorrow skiving off work to watch the footy.  So, let?s see what?s been going on the with ?Stros [clicks through a couple of pop-ups] WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Good news: the June Swoon is almost over.  Time for the July Goodbye to begin.  Followed by August Disgust and the September Dismember.  Holy shit this is a bad team right now!  Losers of nine out of twelve they just got mauled by the Tigers for three straight; shut out in two of ?em.  Is there some cosmic law that one of the teams playing in Tiger Stadium has to play like shit?

Now it?s off to Dallarse to play the Rump Rangers of Texas.

When:
Friday, June 30, 7:35 p.m. CDT ? FSN
Saturday, July 1, 12:20 p.m. CDT ? Big Fox & Big Fox HD
Sunday, July 2, 7:05 p.m. CDT ? FSN & FSN HD (Ch. 302 on TimeWarner)

MLB Extra Innings ? Haven?t the foggiest.  Don?t know/care where to look.

Where: The Ballsack at Armpit-on

The Rangers are 3 games over .500, but 20-21 at home where it?s hotter than a snake?s arse in a wagon rut.

Projected Matchups

Roy Oswalt (6-3, 3.26) v. Vincent Padilla (6-5, 4.76)

Padilla hasn?t faced the Astros this year.  Probably a good thing too as he?s been worn out by half of the line-up.  Berman?s OPS against him is 1.706!  That?s 7-13 (.538 BA) with 3 walks, 6 ribs, a dinger, 4 doubles and only 1 K.  Biggio, Lamb and Willy T. are also hitting him at a .500 clip, while Everett?s at .444.  Palmeiro tops the lot of ?em with a .571 BA.  Ensberg?  Oh-fer.  Expect to see Lamb at 3B, Willy back in CF and OP starting tonight.

What about Oswalt you ask?  He?s 4-1 with a 3.47 ERA vs. the Texans yadda, yadda, yadda.  Roy will be Roy, it?s what the offense and defense does around him that matters.

Wandy Rodriguez (8-5, 4.79) v. J. Wasdin (1-0, 3.38)

Wasdin was DL?d on June 12, so I?m guessing this is his first start back after straining a thumb (probably while ?reading? the Dallas Cheerleaders calendar in the bathroom).  I hope he?s recovered and is pitching, because he?s got a 10.80 ERA vs. the good guys (in 2 games, 1 as starter).  Of course, he?s got no decisions in those two games, so I didn?t even bother trying to look back to see what kind of clusterfuck could?ve occurred for that to be the case.  Everyone smokes this fool (although Lance is 0-2 with a walk), with Biggio leading the charge with a 2.600 OPS.  I shit you not: 3-5, 1 double and 2 dingers.  Is Biggio going to be ok to play this series?  That?s my job to tell you, you say?  Bugger.

Wandy?s never faced the Rangers and has hardly faced any of their roster any other time.  He wins when he gets run support (and doesn?t give up 8 runs in 1.1 innings on a Friday night when Limey?s taken his visiting family to see a game and has front row seats and ends up watching a fucked up game and has to explain why baseball isn?t normally like this and why the fuck couldn?t Rodriguez? herpes have flared up that night so that Sampson could?ve started the game at 0-0 and not down 8-0 and fuck!!!!).  This one could be a slug-fest; Fox will love it!

Taylor Buccholz (6-8, 5.75) v. Kevin Millwood (8-4, 4.47)

Last time we saw Millwood, he was pitching 7 innings of 4-hit shut-out ball in MMPUS.  He?s 5-2 all-time vs. the Astros with a measly 2.60 ERA.  The Astros? old guard of Biggio, Bagwell and Ausmus hit him well, as does Wilson who either hits or fans (so, no change there then).  That?s about it.  Everyone else combines for a blip above an of-fer.  Dave Clark was 0-2 but he did get a walk once.  I wonder if the Umps let him keep ball 4.

As scary as Millwood was in his last start against the Astros, he cannot match the heroics of Buccholz.  A CGSO on 5 hits with 6 Ks and zero walks.  Whatever happened to that kid?  Oh, that?s right, he came back for his next start and gave up 9 earnies in less than 4 innings.  Against Pittsburgh.  This could be a fine match-up, but you may want to have plenty of beer on hand in case the Rangers mete out some payback.

Key injuries:

Houston
? Brandon Backe is in rehab for 28 days?errr?3 starts from Thursday, so he should be back with the team in time to sit through the rainouts in Florida in mid-July.  Jeff Bagwell is scowling at the Italian countryside and may or may not be schtupping Diane Lane under the Tuscan sun.  Biggio has shoulder-knack, but I?m hoping he?s fit to play as this series is BP to him.

Texas ? Starting pitchers Loe and Eaton, plus reliever Rupe are all down with shell-shock.  Wasdin is officially on the DL, but should be activated for Saturday?s game.  Funny, all the Rangers? hitters are ok.

Other shit

Friday and Saturday, the World Cup?s last 8 is whittled down to its last 4.  Friday?s brunch match between Germany and Argentina should be a cracker.  Maybe Friday?s a good day to take an early lunch because the afternooner is a horror story in the making:  woeful and pitiful Ukraine vs. woeful and pitiful Italy.  Ugh!

Saturday morning brings up stuttering England vs. Portugal?s band of gifted thespians.  There?s an opportunity for payback here as Portugal beat England in Euro 2004?s quarter finals, only after a penalty shoot-out that came about only after Sol Campbell?s perfectly acceptable winning goal was ruled out because Portugal?s goalie chipped a nail.  But like my Murphy?s, I?m not bitter.  Watch for England to give the floptastic Portuguese something to actually cry about.  England will be without Michael Owen but otherwise at full strength.  For Portugal: Deco  is out, Figo is in and Christiana Ronaldo is probable.

Last up on Saturday afternoon is a rematch of the 1998 final between Brazil and France.  Les Jaunes?errr?Bleus found just enough sack against perennial choke-artists Spain to get here.  Meanwhile Brazil cruised past a the Ghanaians who apparently were all wearing their Frank Lampard model shooting boots.  Oddly enough, Brazil haven?t beaten France since 1981, but they haven?t played them that much either.

Limey?s picks:  Argentina over Germany; Italy over Ukraine; England over Portugal (du-uh) and Brazil over France.  And just to show that I?m not a completely blind homer, I?m picking an Argie-Brazil final.

Talk Zone / World Cup Update
« on: June 19, 2006, 12:43:44 pm »
An interesting weekend.  Portugal booked a place in the Round of 16 in unconvincing fashion, but they did get a nice goal from Deco.  At the same  time, Iran was eliminated.  The other place from Group D will go to Mexico or Angola, who played out a disappointing tie.  Mexico have the points, but can be overhauled by Angola if they lose and Angola beat Iran by enough to overhaul the 3 goal deficit.

If sure you're familiar with what befell Team USA.  Bottom line, they have to beat Ghana and look to Italy to beat the Czechs.  That'll put Italy and the US through, regardless of goal differences.  If Italy fail to beat CR, then the US will need to put a few past Ghana and trust to luck.

Brazil, like England, booked a place in the next round with a second unconvincing win over the plucky and unlucky Aussies.  Japan are all-but dead, needing to beat Brazil to have a chance of moving on.  Australia and Croatia play each other in their last group game, and the winner will move on with Brazil.

France hilariously played like shit against South Korea.  Their second poor performance sees them looking up at S. Korea and Switzerland with a game to play.  France need to beat the eliminated Togolese by 2 goals, which will see France overhaul one of the top two regardless of the result between SK and the Swiss.  If France lose or tie, they're done.

The last of the Game #2s are today, but Spain are cruising in Group H and I don't really think anyone cares about who moves on out of Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Ukraine.

Now things start to get good.  There will be four games a day between Tuesday and Friday as the group phase wraps up.  The last round of games in each group kick off  simultaneously, and there are many "win or go home" scenarios to be played out.

Tomorrow, Germany and Ecuador play to decide the winner and runner-up of Group A.  Later, England play Switzerland in similar circumstances in Group B.  Switzerland can still be caught by Trinidad & Tobago if they lose, but Tuesday's games aren't full of the frenzied mathematics that will play out later in the week.

Mexico and the USA face their days of destiny on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.  France are under the gun on Friday.

Talk Zone / World Cup Update (Non-BB - du-uh)
« on: June 15, 2006, 12:16:06 pm »
As no one is talking baseball (or even politics) this morning...

Group A has now concluded its second round of matches (of three).  Germany handed Poland it's second defeat yesterday in a match that was totally bereft of skill until Poland had a player dismissed and Germany grabbed the Pole by the horns.  They rampaged for about 10 minutes, scoring a late, but nonetheless deserved goal.

Today, surprise team Ecuador put up its second impressive performance, dispatching plucky Costa Rica 3-0.

This puts both Poland and Costa Rica out, with one match to play.  All that's left to decide in this group is the winner and runner-up placings, which will be sorted out when Germany and Ecuador square off next Tuesday.  Currently, Ecuador sit atop the group by virtue of their superior goal difference (scored minus conceeded) over Germany.

The remaining action today sees Group B's second round of games.  Sweden - unimpressive in their scorelessly tied first match against Trinidad & Tobago - play the woeful Paraguay.  This is preceded at 11am by England - unimpressive in their crawfished win over Paraguay - against the surprisingly resilient Trinidad and Tobago.

An England win assures them of progress into the Round of 16 (to face either Germany or Ecuador), but otherwise Group B is wide open.

How is it that this guy gets smacked around more than Bobby Cox' wife after a tough loss, yet, when you look at the scoreboard, the game is as tight as a gnat's chuff?  It doesn't look like he's making big pitches (he makes a couple, but he cannot overpower anyone).  It doesn't look like the hitters are getting themselves out (Wilson excepted).  It doesn't look like he's being bailed out by the defense.

Last night was a supreme example, but this happens to a certain degree every time this guy pitches.  WTF?

The company that insured Bagwell's contract has denied (two weeks ago) that Jeff is unable to play.  The link.

Nice.

Astros are going to sue.

As someone who works in the insurance bidness, can I just say that this is example #27486310647236464 of which I'm aware of a purveyor of speciality products refusing to pay a claim that the policy was specifically taken out to cover.  Property and Casualty insurers are much more open to actually paying claims (honest, they are), but these speciality clowns write odd policies and expect never to have to pay.

What they do is deny the claim in the hope of negotiating a settlement lower than the claim actually deserves.  It's crooked, and I've nearly come to blows in a settlement meeting with similar tossers.

A midnight (GMT) tonight, the relaxation of alcohol sales licensing restrictions in England takes effect.  About one third of the licensed establishments were granted extended hours under the new rules.  The new licenses take effect at midnight, so many pubs are advertising that they will close at 11pm as they are currently required to do, and then re-open at 12:01am.  The London Evening Standard (pronounced "Lah'n Evenin' Stannah") estimates that, in London alone, there'll be the equivalent of 7,500 more drinking hours on Friday and Saturday nights.

It's at times like this that I miss the old country.

« on: November 06, 2005, 10:59:33 pm »
Nice chap by the name of Zack, who spent a year being a Bro.  It's a U of H thing apparently.  The Astros give them dispensation to stand in front of the handicapped seats on the RF terrace deck (as long as no one is holding a ticket for 'em) and to hang their banner.  They buy the $5 cheap seats and then set up in their spot.  They hang out on the Astros' MLB board, and have a lively rivalry with the WolfPack.

It's cool of the Astros to give them sanction (they have a letter from the Director of Marketing that says they can do what they do).  Of course, they were absent for Oswalt's start in Game #3 of the World Series.  Guess who kyboshed 'em...?

...is completely lost at the plate.  He's watching strikes into the catcher's mitt (remember that shit from the beginning of the season), taking pitches at which he should swing and swinging at pitches that he couldn't hit with a broom handle.

He's also made two very poor errors on routine ground balls to 3rd in the last two games.

The Astros' predicament is not all his fault, and they wouldn't be here without him.  But he's chosen a very, very bad time to go awaol.

I'd give serious consideration to moving him down the order and putting Lane behind Berkman.  And I really don't like how Lane hits.

As I walk through

Is there only pain and hatred and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There?s one thing I wanna know:
What?s so funny ?bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
What?s so funny ?bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

?Cause each time I feel it slippin? away, just makes me wanna cry.
What?s so funny ?bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh

I respectfully propose that we award Eric Bruntlett the official title of "Great".  Previously reserved to commend the amazing opportunistic achievements of Bill Spiers, I feel that it is now clear and unequivocal that Bruntlett deserves the same.

He has now been involved in pivotal game winning and/or saving plays in 5 games that I can think of, and perhaps a couple more that I cannot.  He fits the Spiers' mould perfectly, having played almost every position this season and excelled at every one, while he has cranked some extremely timely hits.

He is the reincarnation of Bill Spiers.  He is Great.

One of their columnists, Bernie Miklasz, writes this piece on Game #2.  He starts off pretty good, but ends up with the line:

"The Cardinals have a conflict on their hands."

Really?  You thought it over after Game #1?  No wonder fans like foulpolesmoke exist in STL.

How about this glass of whine:

"Now, I don't really believe for a minute that the Cardinals will lose three consecutive games at Minute Maid, but mathematically it's possible."

Mathematically?  Or actually (he does go on to say that the Astros did this bizarre, mathematical feat last year).  "Mathematical" should be reserved to describe the chances of a 15-30 team making the playoffs.  "Mathematical" should be reserved to describe the chances of a team down by 5 runs and only 5 outs left winning a game.  "Mathematical" does not describe what could happen to the 3rds if they, like their fans and press corps, underestimate the Astros and the home field advantage of MMPUS.

FTR, I think this thing's going back to Busch at 3-2.  I'm just not saying who's the daddy in that scoreline.

The Co-Dispatch makes some interesting comments.  Notably:

A bullpen that general manager Walt Jocketty thought might become a work in progress during the season's first half instead became a pillar of a staff that led the National League in ERA.

and

Not including the exiled fifth starter, the Astros hung a 4.78 ERA on the six relievers the Cardinals carry into the NLCS. Isringhausen suffered two blown saves in seven chances against them. They were also his only fumbled chances after June 26.

Of the four home runs Isringhausen allowed this season, two came in consecutive innings by Morgan Ensberg and Brad Ausmus during a loss Sept. 2 at Minute Maid Park.

Tavarez, who carries a colorful connection to the Astros, suffered two of this season's three losses against Houston,  on April 6 and Sept. 2.

I may have to pluck out my eyes before October is over.  From the AP recap of 3rdcs/Pads Game #1:

Quote:

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Reggie Sanders, Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals looked every bit like the best team in baseball -- even with a shaky ending.

So you think that a team with a bullpen that contains 4 relievers - including lauded closer Isringbergsbitch - who can conspire to give up 5 runs in 3 innings to a barely over .500,  at home is showing its greatness?  Each reliever has a playoff ERA of 9.00 or worse. Against the Pads!  At home!

La Russa had to use Izzy, and he gave up 4 hits and a run for 2 outs.  TWO!  They started the 7th with an 8 run lead, but when the game ended, the Pads had the go ahead run at the plate.

The BFiBs all need a change of undies.

Can't stand that bloke.  While trying to desperately hold on to my integrity, I was, deep down, really hoping that he'd fucked his hand and would be out for...say...three weeks.  I liked JD's comment that, unlike many players, you really know when Edmonds is carrying an injury.

But WTF was he doing going up to bat with a hand so numb that he couldn't swing?  WTF was La Russa doing sending him up there like that, then switching out Walker and Sanders - the two outfields he had that could swing?  Pure Genius.

Oh, and Isringhausen is MoBerg's bitch.
