Ready to get this show going. Anyone know why start time was pushed back to 720 for the games in Houston? Seems odd

Believe they said it was moving back for all remaining games, LA included. Not sure why.

Only quibble is the high strike isn't brig caked but he's been consistent.

Better than most we've seen this postseason.

Saw someone post the chart. Looked very good. Very consistent. Moreso than you’d think from the FS1 overlay.

Backe’s outing in the 2004 NLCS was epic partly because it was so unexpected.  Today was Verlander delivering on his promise, and then some.

The Backe/Kent was my favorite Astros game before today. Think this may have overtaken.

Beltran’s defense in the Backe game was incredible. I still think about it frequently.

Can’t comprehend how good Verlander was and how Altuve keeps dominating. What a fun team.

but they're apparently better predictors of future performance than just about any other stat out there.

I believe cFIP is meant to have better predictive value while DRA has more historic value (i.e., who was best this season, how does that compare historically). Excellent to see that McCullers ranks so well with both.

cFIP was on the Will Harris bandwagon before his 2015 season.

Every insurance person I've talked with says that if your premiums went up that much, it's because your provider took the opportunity to gouge you, not because the ACA necessitated it.

The idea that basic health care should be tied to your employer is one of the more ridiculous ideas we've ever come up with.

Listened to a Planet Money podcast episode about this some time ago. Its popularity took off primarily because it was the easiest way to circumvent wage freezes during World War II.

Both these guys (Drellich and JdJO) were interviewed on the Effectively Wild podcast Astros season preview a few days ago, and I was struck by how largely informationless and lame it was.

Yes, absolutely accurate. For an interesting team expected to be a contender, it was one of the most boring episodes of the series and I have a vested interest.

There was an episode earlier and the question was, "If I tell you a team won 110 games and you can pick the Dodgers or FTC, who would you pick?" Sam, one of the co-hosts picked the Astros. What a strange new world we live in.

The Springer catch game in Arlington is high on my list as well. The radio broadcast kept me distracted through an all day yard clean up session.

My favorite is biased by being in attendance, but Neshek coming in to strike out Mike Trout in the eighth, followed by Castro's walk-off homer in the ninth to cap a sweep of the Angels.

14
Listened to the end of the Rangers game. Had an interesting fact. Jays ended longest active playoff drought in US major professional sports. Of the remaining teams, they most recently won a world series.

It is proving impossible to find Colt 45 around here.

It wasn't exactly effective, in any sense. I wasn't able to get very far into it before Davis dispatched us, maybe the magic is in the bottom?

I would recommend buying two, though. You'll need the first one to make the second one taste good.

I know this crowd is super into ACC football, and that I'm bringing this up several days late, but did anyone see highlights (lowlights?) from the end of the Wake Forest/Boston College game? High high comedy.

1) With 5 minutes left, a Wake punt returner fields a punt inside the 2, retreats into the end zone and barely escapes a safety. Wake burns clock and tries to create space for punt.
2) BC gets the ball back with around 3 minutes at the 50 yard line. Work pretty quickly to the 8 yard line.  3rd down and an inch to go, they run a QB dive and he fumbles the ball to Wake.
3) 2 minutes to go, Wake runs twice, BC calls time-outs. On third down with a minute left and no more BC time-outs Wake fumbles the ball back to BC on the 11 yard line.
4) BC runs two quick plays and gets to the one yard line with 20 seconds remaining. Officials measure for first down, giving BC time to think about the next play.
5) BC tries a draw, its stopped, they cannot untangle the scrum and get lined up again before the clock expires. Game over. Wake wins 3-0.

Incredible display of ineptitude.

Hard to top Wake's thrilling defeat of Virginia Tech last year (6-3 win in double OT), but I think they did it.

17
It may have gone up the middle, Altuve may have had a play.  Either way, it was not a "miracle" play for Correa.  He took his eye of the ball and, and it bounced off his glove chest high.
Agreed, after the tip it was a playable ball by Correa.

Saw that announcement. Sad to see. Glad you weren't directly affected.

19
It was a sure double play.  Big candy hop, right at Correa a foot from the bag.  He took his eyes off of it to look at the bag and it hit off the tip of his glove.  The yahoos kept talking about how it was a tough luck error and should have been in hit.  In no alternate universe was that any thing other than a huge E.

Of course, if Sipp fields it, it's also a double play, but with  no run scoring.
I was sure of this too, but on replay I wasn't sure. If Sipp doesn't slow down the ball I think it might have gone clean up the middle. Hard to say.

So, today's loss was rough, clearly.

I woke up excited about the game. My wife put my one year old daughter in the Cooperstown shirt, baseball headband and baseball print skirt I bought her from Biggio's induction. Very cute.

I get a few morning meetings out of the way and thankfully the holiday spared my brother from teaching today. He happens to live right next door to the client I was visiting today. I have two kids under 1.5 and a 6 year-old step son. Life's busy and I don't see him as much as I'd like, but today I can take my lunch break to watch some Astros with him.

After a slow start we decide to order a beer to shake things up and Gomez delivers as soon as the beer is. An afternoon meeting is cancelled and I end up blowing off 4.5 hours of work drinking beers with my brother willing on the Astros. I banter with you guys online, I bear hug random other bar mates and high five til my hands hurt.

When the game turns against us, my brother and I flee the bar, find a dive convenience store and buy Colt .45s. We take an amazing photo together with our 40s. It doesn't work, Astros lose, and I return to work.

After trying to salvage part of the work day, I return home. My six year old step son is easily convinced that game 5 can be won. No scar tissue to prevent the optimism from sinking in. Just then, my 1 year old daughter who went to sleep just before I got home, woke up crying. She falls back asleep as soon as I place her on my chest. She is wearing an orange Astros shirt that says "Rookie."

When I look back on this day, there is one bad event of many good ones. I'm hopeful for Wednesday, but regardless of the outcome...what a great season. I was on another terrible forum for the good days. I've been here for all the bad ones. I'm grateful for this team, for this forum and for today.

Let's go Astros and let's win Wednesday.

Spac, forgive Colt .45, for he does not know what he is doing.

21
I have a hard time conjuring up that level of hate for their fans.
Nor do I. Exaggeration. Wish well to them if they end up winning. I pulled for them last year.

22
I'm home from the game now.  I may never leave again.

That inning was exactly like the Pujols home run in 2005, only longer.  Much longer.

"...suffering, so exquisite and prolonged and perfectly punctuated"

From a review of Anna Karenina. Fitting.

23
I was only joking.

Many a true word is spoken in jest - Chaucer

24
We have game 5. So, all is not lost.

I did say that I'd be gone for about 1.5 hours and instead was gone for 4.5 hours. I left a bar to go to a terrible convenience store and drank a Colt .45. I am staying late at work trying to hide inebriation. All for naught, but that's part of being a fan.

We have Wednesday. We just set it up like 2005 so that we can witness the exact moment of heartbreak in the faces of more KC fans.

Frito Pies and Beers. There are heavier crosses to bear.

25

You guys need to give it a rest. Nobody did this but the Astros. And the royals of course.

For the record, I hate this part of replay, but FUCK the record! He's out. Even beer finally starts contributing.

37
It's the odd numbered beers that are effective. The even ones are my sacrifice.

If you are willing to walk a bit, you could try around Toyota Center. The Toyota Center garage is available on non-event days, typically $3 dollars. There is a surface lot behind the garage that is $2 dollars. Both are cash only and don't seem as well known as other lots around.

My office building (5 Houston Center, by Discovery Green) typically charges $18 per day (not sure if they have increased the rate or restricted access for the game). Its not a bad walk, I park there for every game I attend.

Looked like his back seized up when he made contact on his single in the third. Was running to first very gingerly with shoulders drawn back. He stayed in to run and bounced pretty hard sliding into second.

DeShields with a big inning in the third. Scores Odor on a single, removes play at second on a double play ball, scores from second on a hard hit single to center. Really flew around the bases.

Beltre appears to have hurt his back on the single that drove in DeShields, but doesn't leave the game.

Rangers up 2-0 going to the bottom of the third.

For SlingTV, I've found using the WatchESPN app through your ROKU or whatever to be more reliable.  But as you say, it's still 60 seconds behind live, or about 1-2 pitches behind your Gametracker app on your Smartphone.

I use that trick when giving my kids baths/helping them with homework.  If I see a good play is coming, I walk back to the TV to watch it.

Interesting, I did think about switching over to WatchESPN. Mine would start loading at the end of every commercial break which makes me think its a software issue to some degree. I also wonder how much ad revenue ESPN is losing out on by barely advertising at all on the SlingTV channel (other channels seem to do this just fine). And, I wonder if this streaming issue is the reason they aren't getting ads in right now.

There's a mobile app (Fox Sports Go) and online streaming. I am taking a similar route to what you've offered and can at least get it on my phone. Will try to chromecast to a TV.

Used SlingTV for the wild card game on ESPN. Sort of painful, was as much as a half inning behind at various points. Used it again to watch TBS yesterday and it was much more timely.

I know jack about constructing baseball teams and rosters, but looking at the group of Fiers/Kazmir/McCullers, I think McCullers sounds the most appealing in a bullpen role. He could come in if Fiers/Kazmir falter. If they don't falter, he can be used as a power arm that they don't currently have in the bullpen.

I'm no fan of villar and his mental lapses but his skillset is very valuable come playoff time. He's got speed, can play a few positions, and swings a decent switch hitting bat. I agree with you on Duffy, I just hope that Conger doesn't see the field, at least defensively.

Crawfish Boxes had an interesting post on this in the morning. Looking at Win Probability Added contributions during the season Villar kept showing up near the tops of lists.

I just partook of a Frito Pie Burger from Hubcap Grill.  I hope I live to regret this.

Likely a better experience than I had. I should have gone that route.

Princes in the tunnels was offering a Frito Pie special. It was crudely advertised (sharpie on printer paper) and seemed serendipitous. The cause was sweeping the city in such a way that last minute crudely arranged specials had to be arranged. It felt slightly less serendipitous when the "Frito Pie Special" was followed by "*Chicken*". As ill-advised as that is, it at least demonstrated that they had Fritos. I'm sure they had normal chili and cheese.

Sure enough, they are able to order me a non-bird chili pie. Unfortunately, the crude advertisement left out "Burger." The chili pie was delivered in a hamburger bun. In an abundance of caution and deference to the BBGs, I avoided the bun. It does not rank highly on my list of chili pies.

Maybe I got my hopes up too high, because I typically like Hard Knocks pretty well. I found it to be somewhat boring as well.

I think J.J. fatigue might start setting in pretty quick. My favorite part of the show was when O'Brien used an example of J.J. to demonstrate what he wants to see in practice, but apologized for using it, "Look, I know its J.J, but..." Even he understands that the level of effort is unsustainable for nearly everyone and its annoying to use him as an example.

Foster looked pretty solid before the injury. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Abdul's training regimen. Editing bay did him no favors.

You see, the 1997 team was the first year they made a playoff push as a team.

Like I said, you missed my point about the "core" team experiencing the playoff push for the first time.

I know I should let this die, but 1997 was not special.

From 1993 through 1997 (with the core of Bagwell, Biggio, Kile, Reynolds and Hampton), the team won 53% of its games. There were shortened seasons in '94 and '95, but assuming 162 games for comparability, the Astros won 85, 92, 85, 82, 84 in 1993 through 1997, respectively.

1997 was actually below the average pace, at 84 wins. The only reason 1997 is special is that it happened to be the year 84 wins was good enough to make the playoffs.

I'm sorry, just not buying that the team needed 1997 to be great in 1998. The 1998 team was clearly more talented with the additions of Alou, Everett and Randy. That's why they were such a better team in 1998.

Talk Zone / Re: Trade Rant

You *expected* them to win early in August or just enjoyed the ride that they provided by winning? Those are two different things. Be honest.

Yes, of course enjoying the ride and expectations are different. Like cantaloupes and Range Rovers are different. You can, in fact, have cantaloupes and Range Rovers. Just as you can enjoy a team's success while adjusting future expectations based on that success.

Do I think that Rays fans in early August, with a three game lead and a 67-45 record (a .600 winning percentage), were expecting the playoffs at that point? Yes.

BTW - I found this to be a very ignorant statement based on what I was saying. Just saying.

I'm pointing out to you that anyone can play the arbitrary end-point game. You chose 1997 and I chose 1991.

If you'd prefer a more thorough critique:

1. Darryl Kile is totally irrelevant to this argument. He pitched for the Rockies in 1998. How on earth could his 1997 have mattered?
2. Mike Hampton was great in 1998. He was also pretty good in 1995, 1996 and 1997. In fact, 1997 was arguably the worst of those four years.
3. Shane Reynolds was also good in 1998. 1997 also represented the low water mark for him from 1994-1998
4. You know who else was great in 1998? Jose Lima. What did he do prior to 1998? Very little. Pitched poorly in the bullpen.
5. Obviously, Randy was dominate. That had nothing to do with 1997.
6. On offense, Bagwell and Biggio both had arguably worse years in 1998 than they did in 1997, though both seasons were still incredible.
7. So what made the offense so much better in 1998? Mostly, Moises Alou, who was winning the Marlins a World Series in 1997.
8. Also contributing was C4, also new to the 1998 team.

All to say, I am having a real hard time understanding why the 1997 Astros, specifically, had to exist in order for the 1998 Astros to exist and for the fans to appropriately build high expectations.

I am also having a hard time understanding how this proves any point whatsoever, as whatever experience the Astros gained in 1997 surely didn't help their postseason success in 1998 (despite a much better team). Nor did the 1998 team help the 1999 team's success or the 2001 team's success. Playoffs are a crap shoot.

Not basing on fangraphs. Basing it on the fact that they are currently one of the best teams in baseball. This is true based on the standings in real life games. Also appears true when I watch them be awesome at baseball.

Happens that their runs scored and runs allowed would predict that they are as good or better than their record.

They are a very good team that have fans who think they need to grow into being good despite the fact that they are very good right now.

I don't know why you stopped at 1997. If you want to play that game, it started in '91 and built to a peak in '98. Should we wait until 2022 to build up expectations?

Different team, different era. This team is legitimately good. It should make the playoffs. That is a perfectly reasonable expectation.

To really bring this thread full circle, let's visit fangraphs: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-astros-have-altered-their-fate/

This does a good job of explaining why I have changed my tune on expectations for the Astros this year. They are a different team, and by any measure, a very good team.

Concluding that we should be satisfied with something less than what we would normally expect of a very good team is the result of anchoring.

Now, the Astros could fall short and I would be disappointed, but I can also be appreciative of the vastly improved season and how much fun it was. I'm still disappointed in the result in '98 but I'm also still impressed by how good that team was.

Or Altuve, Cargo, Correa, Correa, Gattis, Springer?

Love where you are headed with this one, but I think we should spread out Correa's two spots in the order. First, so that he isn't on base when his spot comes up again, and second so it isn't super obvious to the ump and opponents. My choice:

Correa, Altuve, Springer, Cargo, Lowrie, Correa, Altuve, Springer, Cargo.

Not really. Injury risk is a risk like performance risk. All sorts of reasons a AA star doesn't make it.

I know this wasn't the point of your post, but I'll be extremely disappointed if they don't make the playoffs.  Their playoff odds are at 93% and 95% per Fangraphs and BP, respectively.  We've come too far not to play in October.

I would be too. This is a vastly different team. If they had stood pat choosing instead to aim for 2016-2017 (like the original plan), then the "Most Improved Trophy" is a nice get.

They have pushed a bunch of chips on to the table. The only trophy that counts now is the one with all the flags on it.

I hate seeing an Elite talent go ... particularly when I would bet $100 to $1 that Gomez will not be here in 2018 when Phillips is potentially reaching his major league prime.  History. Lessons.

Not picking on you personally, but just seeing this line of thought everywhere and it just bothers me any number of ways:

1. Why the concern for a specific player in 2018 when we are leading a division in 2015?
2. Isn't this exactly the line of thought many feared for Lunhow? That he would always value the future over the present?
3. If we are going to look three years into the future, let's try it in a different way. How did we view 2015 in 2012? Who was Phillips then? A sixth round pick. Three years later he's a golden god. How quickly things change.
4. This sense of loss in 2018 supposes that circumstances for Phillips, specifically, won't change for the worse as quickly as they changed for the better. It also assumes that the team's general standing and that of its other core players will not change for the better or worse. If further assumes that another draft pick can't develop on a similar path to replace what was lost.

It's holding all sorts of wildly variable factors constant to maximize the impact of a prospect who was a sixth round pick three years ago and is now a AA star.

Lastly, it makes math sense. Bird in hand = two in bush. Two birds in hand > four birds in future bush. Pulled that algorithm straight out of Ground Control.

The OP was put there before the trade and I will stand by it now. I all too vividly recall that the way we got to 55 win seasons was by emptying the talent in the farm system and then being forced to overpay aged veterans. I hate the geometry of the trade. It steals playing time from Preston Tucker who has already proven to be a remarkably adaptable bat. If Mrasnick stays, it moves him to LF, where his ability to go get it is largely wasted. If Jake goes today to SD it messes with the chemistry in the clubhouse and once again removes a significant support piece from Springer's team.  It didn't address the teams fundamental flaw ... 1b. And the logjam now for playing time at 1B and more importantly at DH just gets worse. Gattis, in my view, needs to be in the batting order every night. But then, what of Preston Tucker? Who can argue with Jeff's success. He has turned the ship around. But that doesn't mean that I have to agree with every deal he makes. I had grown very comfortable with the rebuild of the team through the farm system. To me Brett Phillips was the last big piece to come up and make an impact for the team for years. I hate seeing an Elite talent go ... particularly when I would bet $100 to $1 that Gomez will not be here in 2018 when Phillips is potentially reaching his major league prime.  History. Lessons. All of that said, I will continue to enjoy the unexpected ride of 2015. My wife may divorce me for never turning off a game, but its truly worth every dirty look I get to stay up late and watch Castro go yard.
Not sure how you could "vividly recall" getting to 55 wins by emptying the farm. That's not what happened. The Astros gave up picks by signing free agents, failed to sign the remaining picks they had, then made poor selections with the few left over. Multiply by several years and that's how the farm died.

They didn't empty the farm. They stopped filling it.

Luhnow and Crane have spent every allowable dollar on the draft, have drafted well and now have a surplus of talent they may lose for nothing through rule V. Further, they have acquired solid veteran players without sacrificing future picks.

Too many fans confusing an egg carton for a chicken coup.

Not suggesting it was a bad trade, just assessing the costs with the benefits of hindsight.  I was super happy when it went down an only thought a couple of times afterwards when seeing Freddy Garcia dominate that that part stung a bit.

I'm with Jim on this one. Was, without question, the right move. They added one of the best pitchers ever, to the best Astros team ever, and the future Hall of Famer pitched the best stretch of his entire career. That was a perfectly played hand. Padres caught a flush on the river when Kevin Brown dealt from the bottom of the deck.

Most exciting off the field moment in Astros history for me. I followed Guillen, Garcia and Halama with some interest after but never once wished it another way. We gave up better players for less.

Kimbrel's a closer.  If the Astros pick him up, no matter how they might try to spin it, that would have to be a vote of no confidence in Gregerson as the closer.  Considering how successful he's been this season I'd hate dicking with the team chemistry like that.

Kimbrel's a better closer. Would not be a vote of no confidence. Would be an acknowledgment that the best closer in baseball over the past many years is better than our good closer. Gregerson can continue to provide very valuable innings.

No idea on whether it would be a good move from a prospect/money standpoint, but trying to build a bulletproof back-end to the staff sounds like a reasonable idea (like Royals recent or Astros of old). Especially when we may be relying on young arms pitching deeper into a season than we have before.

I actually think things are better and safer in general now.

Just heard some guy on the radio who did a study of kids' independence about 40 years ago then followed up to see how the next generation of those same kids were treated. Guy said the town was largely unchanged and, if anything, safer than before. Kids free range was reduced significantly despite no increase in risk.

Miles of free reign for teenagers was reduced to blocks. Blocks of free range for 5-7 year olds was reduced to their backyard. Same kids who had miles of free reign and lament the loss of freedom were imposing the rules restricting freedom of their own kids.

I know I'm guilty of that to some degree as well. A lot of collective social pressure to be hyper aware of your kids whereabouts despite a lot of individuals thinking more independence would be better.

I'm not sure I'm sold on this. Bagwell, for instance, has been retired ten years. Some guy that covered him or saw him play a lot for most of his career may have retired around the same time or his beat was changed and is now disqualified for the voting. However, some younger guy that has been doing baseball for a handful of years can vote and doesn't know Bagwell from the man in the moon. Most guys on the ballot have been retired for ten years or more except for the obvious shoe-ins. I understand what they are trying to do but are they throwing the baby out with the bath water?

I don't know. The hypothetical "new guy" still has to have 10 years in the BBWAA qualify to vote in the first place. I'd guess these "new guys" would be roughly in their middle to later thirties. That would seem to be the ideal age for a Bagwell voter.

Edited for my poor math skills. Guy could have started with BBWAA the year Bagwell retired and be just now getting a vote. Assuming his baseball knowledge started from zero at the start of his career (and doesn't look back) he would have zero knowledge of practically any HOF candidate in his prime. He'd have to do research of any candidate and I suspect would be more tolerant of the pro-Bagwell arguments.

Jeff Foxworthy is a HOFer in my book.

Walked past him on main street not long before the parade. The street was packed and he was mobbed with people trying to take a picture with him. He seemed to be graciously accepting every request.

Great weekend. Was sorry I couldn't catch up with anyone else there. We went through a tour that had us stationed in Albany. Was nice to have everything organized, and to have a ticket and seat at the induction on Sunday, but the commute from Albany isn't a great deal of fun and would have appreciated a little more freedom in arrival/departure times to Cooperstown.

Great to see the turnout though. Flights, hotels, streets, ceremony, everywhere you looked there were Astros fans. It also made me appreciate more the change in color scheme. The prominence of orange really helped everyone standout and looked so much better than the Braves and D'Backs jerseys floating around.

Loved that RJ gave a shout out to the Astros in his speech and also loved that it was met with the loudest cheer. The fact that he was so clearly uncomfortable up there made me love his jokes even more.

Was anyone else there tempted to buy the RJ paintings on the way to Doubleday field? Hilarious.

I lost two this week to the Spiders.

I scored zero runs in the first 19 innings of the series.

In the 2nd inning of the third game I finally scored on a single, error, passed ball, sac fly.

In the ninth inning of that same game, and my final inning of the week, I scored my second run, a walk off home run for the sole victory this week.

I am in an impressive slide.

Seriously?  You actually expected Crane to not use his total draft allotment?  Like he would just not sign Bregman, Tucker or Cameron to save 3-6 million?

Come on, the guy invested his draft pools, maybe with a small penalty.  Probably every other owner did too.  Let's give him a gold star.

All sarcasm aside, I just think we should set the bar a little higher than using up your draft pool.
Sure, it's possible they don't use all of it. Plus their allotment is significantly higher than others due to the multiple high picks. It's clear the management team wanted to focus more of the available resources to the draft and player development. Didn't have to be that way. Could have signed free agents and played hard ball on bonuses like Drayton did when the farm died. The money isn't limitless, there are choices to be made, and some will choose to spend less on the draft.

I don't think it's fair to assume everyone would be so aggressive in making sure every dollar was spent.

Correa is illegally drinking an '85 Henri Jayer Richebourg Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France. The unmanned spotlight mysteriously follows him through the club. The dense smoke parts as he steps about the room. When he privileges the party with his insights, the volume on the house music automatically drops.

Correa places his hand on Villar's shoulder just as he's about to run barefoot through the wet shower area, Andre' bottle in hand. Villar replaces his bottle of Andre' with a bottle of water and studies base-out scenarios intently on his iPad, absently wiping away the champagne dripping from the ceiling onto his screen.

Lowrie comes in after hearing the music from the training room. Correa shakes his hand. Lowrie's ligament is immediately repaired and he is suddenly adamant that third base is the best place for him.

Correa exits the party and all those remaining suddenly feel a considerable sense of loss. They grab their gear and make their way to the cages without thinking. They find James Earl Jones narrating Correa's batting practice.

Outside MMP, brake lights illuminate the inbound lanes of 45, 10 and 59 for 30 miles in every direction.

Hey, let's ask that pitcher who blew out his Achilles while batting:link

Thank you, Mr. Wainwright.

Wainwright said it should stay for:

1) Strategy
2) History/change is bad

This is why I am fine with the NL.

The argument that pitchers need to hit, or else we're on a slippery slope to where everything on offense is specialized doesn't ring true to me at all. In fact, the current incentives seem to support the complete opposite on the non-pitcher side.

Pitcher specialization is very strongly valued. The trend is for bigger more specialized bullpens. That leaves teams with a shorter bench. On shorter benches, versatility is more valuable. The A's and Ray's were exploiting this. The more positional versatility you have, the more flexibility there is in lineup construction which allows the teams to better exploit platoon advantages. It also provides greater insurance against injury. This allows teams to carry 8 bullpen arms if they so desire.

The trend is true in both leagues. The effectiveness of bullpens has put a premium on offensive and defensive versatility. If anything, there is more value in the DH being able to field than there was historically.

Talk Zone / Re: DH
« on: April 29, 2015, 10:26:03 am »
I agree that a pitcher is categorically different from any other position on the field, but would giving him more at bats in the minors completely derail a pitcher's program? Seems to me the decision to DH in the minors is at least as much about giving positionless hitters a chance to develop their swings. NL teams can turn them into tradeable assets. It would be interesting, though, to see an organization go the other way for a few years. A starting pitcher in the NL today might see more ABs in one year in the major leagues than he did throughout his whole tenure in the minors. If that wasn't the case, they'd conceivably be able to go deeper into games, spare the bullpen, and convey to their team a distinct advantage in interleague play. I'm just saying, food for thought.

Baseball, at every level, has pretty clearly indicated that the investment in pitcher hitting is not worthwhile. There is nothing stopping them from doing so, but the incentive is not there.

Teams aren't looking for ways to get their starters deeper into games. Bullpens have generally become much more effective than the starter would be going through the order a third or fourth time.

In baseball, you're supposed to do everything, and let the team deal with your weaknesses as best they can.

Not exactly. Non-pitchers are not expected to pitch. In fact, teams would never dream of putting their best hitters in for a pitcher for fear of them hurting themselves. The hitters are untrained and may not have pitched since high school. Asking them to pitch at the highest possible level after years of neglecting that ability? Foolishly risky. Reserved only for when there are no options left or for the novelty in an otherwise meaningless game, and never with the best players.

Love good rants. That was a good rant.

I have to say that I was surprised to find myself in the shrugging shoulders camp, but I am. I didn't miss the strategy element in the ninth inning of the A's game on Friday when Grossman (in the ninth spot) came up with a man on and two outs. I was happy that Keuchel got to pitch the ninth. In the NL, he almost certainly would have been yanked for Grossman (or the like) and ended his outing. Sure it took some risk and gambling out of the moment, but I got to see a professional hitter hit in a high leverage situation and I got to see our best pitcher throw another inning.

Pitcher's hitting ability declines every single year. Pitchers as hitters are comically inept these days. I think its fair to question whether the novelty of a pitcher hitting and the strategy of when to replace them is worth the injury risk.

I would not have said any of this if we were still in the NL, but we have the unique experience that most fans don't. We got to watch the same team in both environments and compare our levels of enjoyment. I surprisingly didn't care as much as I thought I would. Would I like to go back to the NL? Absolutely yes, and for these reasons in order of importance:

1) Central time games
2) History (including the consistency of opponents, rivalries, etc.)
3) Pitchers hitting

Good questions, so let me break this down:

1. Individual days don't matter.  A week's results matter - so if Ramirez played two games, went 3-4 and 0-5, you're not getting a 3-4 and an 0-5; you're getting 2 games based on .333 for the week.  (I learned this the hard way when Randy Johnson pitched another game the same week of his perfect game.)
2. If a player has a rating at a position, he may always play at that position, no matter where he plays IRL.  HanRam is a 4.65 SS, no matter if he's actually playing SS or LF.
3.  That rating? That rating right there?  That's half of defense.  If you played 8 other perfectly league-average defenders (really 7, b/c all pitchers are treated as league-average) then your team would have a defensive rating of -0.1, because HanRam is -0.1 from the average SS.
4.  The other half of defense is performance.  If HanRam made 2 errors that week in front of the Monster, then his performance for your team that week would be based on 2 errors - AT SHORTSTOP.

and if I'm understanding it right, all OF can play any OF position, but the CF you play has his defense rating magnified, so you'd want to make sure a plus defender is there. Right?

It's my turn to draft, but I can't get it to work right. Shitfick.

There's no draft button or anything. You just put the guy you want at the top of your list and when your draft time arrives, he gets drafted.

Just make sure the guy you want is the first one listed in your little box on the bottom right hand side of this page, and hit save:

He finished what Mike Jackson started.  Which, of course, prompted the great Dierker response after the game, "If I had put Wagner in to close, people would be asking me right now why I didn't put Jackson in."

What a painfully hilarious memory. This made me go to baseball-reference to look it up. I was surprised to see that Dotel hadn't already assumed that set up role more permanently. He had only held 12 of Wagner's 39 saves (and only 5 of his last 10) compared to 30 of 35 the following year.

I remember being upset he hadn't gone to Dotel, but also remember that as seeming automatic. Like that's what they had been doing down the stretch and going to Jackson was a diversion from that. I don't have a good memory it appears. But, he still should have put in Dotel.

I believe it's in the by-laws of the Big 12 that a co-champion will be declared in such a situation as we have. According to Bowlesby it was voted as such unanimously by the conference ADs. I'm not defending it...I think it's ridiculous but that is my understanding. I'm sure it will change now.

If true, that makes their slogan choice even more absurd. The name of the conference and the slogan are both factually inconsistent with the bylaws.

Speaking of Airlines, Delta finally did the inevitable.  The miles you earn for Delta flight will be based solely on the price of your ticket.  A round trip $350 ATL to LAX flight would net 1/2 as many miles as a last minute $700 ATL to TPA flight, despite one flight being 4000 miles and the other 800.

Probably just a matter of time until AA and UA go this route.

Would be fitting. My travel over the past 9 years would have benefited from that arrangement (many very short, very expensive flights), but I no longer have to make the trip. Not going to lose any sleep over it though. The less ERJ in my life, the better.

Third behind Baggy and Biggio.

He's right in there with Cruz, Cedeno and Wynn. You could probably rank the four of them in any order after Bagwell and Biggio.

Career WAR in Astros uniform would rank them:

1) Bagwell
2) Biggio
3) Cruz
4) Cedeno
5) Berkman
6) Wynn
7) Oswalt
8 ) Dierker
9) Morgan
10) Doran
11) Puhl
12) Wilson

14) Scott

That picks up all the non-Umbricht retired numbers.

As for the voter who seeks local input, that's BBWAA vice-president Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle. He gathers about 6-8 people over a lunch or dinner, they talk about the players, then he votes by how the majority tells him to vote re: each player. I was part of the panel one year.

I don't necessarily take exception with JdJO's voting process, at least he's putting some effort into it. His ballot was reasonable, given the difficult choices. On the other hand, perhaps they could find a better VP than the Chronicle's soccer beat guy/third string baseball beat writer.

I've never flown ANA, but from what I understand there's not much difference.

Business? I flew ANA in business class from Tokyo to Singapore recently. It was a 767. Small seats for business class (smaller than United's 767 seats), don't lay flat, worse monitors. They did have a big screen which showed a camera on the nose or landing gear during take-off. That was interesting.

I remember thinking it was quite a bit worse than United at the time, but I flew United on the 777 from Houston to Tokyo. I've since flown the United 767 a handful of times and I still prefer United's set up, but ANA was more similar to what I experienced on ANA. My Japanese friends said they were known for better service.

It's not about what you or I think.  The $70mm discount was stated to be Crane's price to accept the league switch.  It's not conjecture.

What you think is the $70 million is undervaluing the impact of the AL switch. That's conjecture. No way to determine that.

It doesn't even have to be revenue related. It could be simply that Bud is asking Crane to do something he'd rather not do. Revenue may be equal, may be slightly better, may be worse. Its a risk he didn't anticipate when he entered the negotiations and he'd like to be compensated for it. Or he'd like to be compensated because Bud is robbing the Astros' history as an NL team (doesn't have to mean its going to be worse off in the long run).

We compensate people to change cities all the time. They may get paid more in their new city, but we give them a bonus because they are giving up a life they know for one they don't.

The amount they can spend on the farm is capped, and at a level marginally greater than other teams.  In other words, they cannot be investing much more than other clubs that have payrolls over 25 mil.

Only capped on acquisitions through the draft. They can, should and seem to be investing more heavily in the talent identification and development side, as well as acquisitions outside the draft.

Would be interesting to see if all this spending is actually disproportionately higher than other organizations, or simply catching up after years of neglect. Either way, its likely money better spent than on the MLB roster.

60mm of profit - i can't read article so just going by the post

Its estimated revenues less MLB payroll, its even higher than gross profit. If you use the Pirates' leaked financials as a comparison, it'd be taking 75% of the revenues against 40% of the operating expenses and saying "they made it."

In a nice bit of symmetry, that calculation actually works out to $60M for the 2008 Pirates. They reported $22 million of operating income that year.

He owns a home at Pebble, too. I wish he would adopt me.

Between my senior year and graduate year I took a road trip across the country with a couple friends. It always amazes me how fortunate we were on this trip. Never significantly lost, never hit traffic, no accidents, no tickets. We had a momentary car scare in Hannibal, MO (loose engine mount) but the car heroically pushed on before finally breaking down in Carmel, CA of all places. We had driven through some god-forsaken parts of the country* only to breakdown in one of the most beautiful spots in the entire country.

We rented a car for the day to drive around 17 mile road. We saw the lone palm and Pebble's 18th then remembered that some new member of the fraternity grew up out here. We track down his number and he's in town. He takes us to the Spanish Bay restaurant, puts the dinner on his Dad's tab, then takes us out for the night. Turns out this guy has never played golf. Has no interest. He lives minutes from 3 of the best golf courses in the world and it never occurred to him to play. He only seemed partially aware of how lucky he was to have access to these courses. Baffling.

Not long after, he came down with some strange liver disease that kept him out of school for a year. He returned a completely changed person. He dressed properly, could engage people socially and decided to take up golf.

* my favorite was some bombed out portion of Nevada. It proudly advertised the fact that it was a nuclear bomb test site and looked the part. Totally barren. Looked like a scene out of a post-apocalyptic western. As I recall, we had two hotel choices: a best western and an unnamed motel with a clown motif. There was a 20 foot tall worn wooden clown waiving you into the parking lot and life size clown pin ups on the door to each room. I can only imagine that this was the city's attempt to attract horror film production. Best Western was normally outside our budget for lodging, but we made an exception.

Talk Zone / Re: Comcast Houston Debuts Monday
« on: November 15, 2012, 01:55:58 pm »
Can you expand on this assertion?

What incentive does Comcast have to deny their product to the market?  For example, in Austin, Comcast doesn't exist as far as I know.  How is it to their benefit to shut out an entire market area?  Also, Comcast has a bunch of other sports networks on Directv, if what you say is true, why would they make those available through a non-Comcast provider?

None. That argument cannot be supported. Absolutely no advantage to restricting viewers. I suspect his argument is that because Comcast controls 40% of the market they can afford to play hard ball with the remaining distributors. They will gain some customers by being the exclusive provider of Rockets and Astros games until an agreement is reached, but I cannot imagine that the value of those customer acquisitions (especially considering the quality of the Rockets and Astros right now...and the quality of Comcast, for that matter) would come close to the revenues generated by making the product available to a wider audience.

The reason this is delayed is very simple. In Comcast's view, the short-term costs (lost revenue) of restricting their audience are lower than the potential long-term gains of negotiating a higher subscription fee. This will continue until that no longer proves to be true for Comcast. The fact that they control 40% of the market improves their footing, but does not change the fundamental business decision.

And to tie this back to elasticity, my desire to avoid Comcast is perfectly inelastic. If I really wanted to see the games, I would buy season tickets to the Astros before I would subject myself to Comcast's cable services.

While I've been settling into my new life, I've been away from the boards for a little while (not that I post much anyway). I got married just over a month ago, and wanted to mention the rehearsal dinner. My Mom works at the park part-time as a tour guide and is the reason I'm an Astros fan. When I got engaged, there was no question where the rehearsal dinner would be. She'd been dying for a reason to have a party up on the roof deck over left field.

It was amazing. I highly recommend it. Roof was open, weather was great, we beat the co-ards. Brownie gave my Mom a shout out on the broadcast and later in the evening, when my Dad's band had started playing, JD yelled at them to keep the music down. Pretty funny, wouldn't have dreamed the sound would carry past the first few rows in the upper deck.

I guess there is a very tight window where that could be an enjoyable experience, but it worked out.

I am moving to a new house and need some help. I currently have Dish Network and I am not married to it. I had it because where I live we had a pretty crappy cable company that only offered 4 or so HD channels (hyperbole). I am moving to an area where I can get Dish Network, Directv, Comcast, or U-Verse.

The biggest downfall of DishNetwork is that I can't get my internet through them. I am not dissatisfied with anything else they offer.

So, men and women of SnS, what say you? Is U-Verse the way to go? Comcast? DirecTV? Or stick with Dish Network?

After a horrible couple years with Comcast, I switched to the same set-up as Andy (DirecTV and dry loop ATT DSL) and was very pleased. I didn't have internet problems with either provider, but the DirecTV television services are significantly better.

I am also moving, but switching to UVerse. DirecTV is letting me hang on to my old box for six months in case I change my mind. If I do go back, they'll treat it like a normal move. No charge for new set up, no new contract. Their customer service throughout couldn't have been better.

Did you order the 15 or the 20 (or something really cool I don't even know about yet)? I hope Poison Girl or maybe Anvil has some, but Branch Water is a good tip.

15, but as I recall there was a third option not on the list. Think it may have been a 12 that was cheaper. The 15 was great but I believe it was 60 bucks. The 20 was 80. (may have been 40 and 60, don't remember exactly).

I will say that if any of you go to Branch Water Tavern I highly recommend the sticky toffee pudding dessert. The fiancé and I both agree it's the best dessert we've had.

Anyone sampled any Pappy Van Winkle before?  Worth the hype? I'm thinking about seeking some out.  (Note: cheap scotch tread is entirely an erroneous thread title to post this under)

Had it at Branch Water Tavern in Houston. It was excellent, but definitely not cheap. The waiter was very excited by the order and could not stop raving about it (I'm sure the impact on his tip was not lost in the excitement).

With UH's access to talent, they shouldn't have any problem taking care of business in the Big East.  If the new stadium happens, then even moreso.  Look at what Patterson did at TCU.

I hope it works out the same way for UH. There is, at least, one full season between now and the Big East, the new stadium, etc. The AQ status may be in question by then too. There's a lot of uncertainty between now and then. I hope Sumlin stays, but I would not blame him for cashing in now.

The better play may be to narrow his list to a few select jobs he really wants, double his earnings at UH in the meantime (or go to ASU, UCLA, etc if they are on said shortlist), and wait for the perfect opportunity, however he sees that, to come along.

Is this recent success at UH sustainable? Because jobs of this calibur may not remain open to him.

I went to Wake Forest and this reminds me a lot of Jim Grobe. He came in and patiently rebuilt the program the right way. When many of the traditional powers in the ACC began faltering, Wake took advantage. They won 11 games, the ACC Championship, played in the Orange Bowl, and Grobe won a few coach of the year trophies. Several reports had him all but delivered to Arkansas as the new head coach. I remember us thinking, "I hope he stays at Wake, but if he leaves, I hope its for something better than Arkansas." We all believed he would eventually leave for as much or better. He's still coaching at Wake 5 years later. Still think he's a quality coach, no worse than he was 5 years ago, but Arkansas isn't calling anymore.

Texas grad here.  If A&M never leaves the conference, the game never goes away.   But they chose to leave, and thus Texas will not schedule them in any sport anytime soon.   No need to give a rival that isn't in your conference more exposure in your primary recruiting zone.

Honestly, Texas not being willing to schedule A&M might be a blessing in disguise for the Aggies.  Instead of worrying so much about Texas, they get the chance to work on building a quality program and building a strong Aggie brand.

Neutral party, and this is exactly how I see it.

I think longing for a simple atmosphere at a professional sporting event in the US is tilting at a lot of windmills.  That horse is certainly out of the barn.

Problem is that Pam will take that horse, hang it from the flag pole and hand out elmers glue coupons when some one runs on the hill. Ads aren't going anywhere, but they could be done in a remotely tasteful way. I think that's worth arguing for.

Bravely bold Jim Crane
Rode forth from EGL.
He was not afraid of Bud,
Oh brave Jim Crane.
He was not at all afraid
To be sent to the AL.
Brave, brave, brave, brave Jim Crane.

He was not in the least bit scared
To be mashed into the West.
Or to have his games on late,
And his schedule broken.
To have his DH hit,
And his rivals burned away,
And his fans all hacked and mangled
Brave Sir Jim Crane.

Brave Jim Crane took his money.
("No!")
Bravely took his money money.
("I didn't!")
When Bud reared it's ugly head,
He bravely took his cash and ran.
("no!")
Yes, brave Jim Crane turned about
("I didn't!")
And gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking ("I never did!") to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
("all lies!")
Bravest of the braaaave, Jim Crane!
("I never!")

My Mom.

She was an army brat, but grew up a Reds fan, or rather, a Johnny Bench fan. When she and my father moved to Houston she found a new favorite catcher in Alan Ashby. Mostly she was happy to have a steady hometown and a hometown team. She loved baseball and raised me to love the Astros. I was too young to remember '86, but she balled when they lost and could never tell me about game 6 without tearing up.

One of my earliest, fondest memories was her letting me stay up way later than normal to sort through all her baseball cards looking for Astros players.

In 2005 I went to Vegas for the first time as part of a long road trip around the country. I was trying to find things for each of my family members along the way but couldn't come up with anything for my mom. We were there in August, almost exactly when the Astros reached 15-30. Because my Mother never loses faith, I bought a $10 futures bet that the Astros would reach the World Series (I still don't know why I didn't bet them to win, it was equally ridiculous at that point) to give to her. That bet paid off $1500 in October. It pays to be positive.

Cornerbacks who can hit but can't keep up on coverage any longer often make good safeties.  In Jackson's case, he can neither hit nor cover.

He can hit ok. The problem is that he is only in position to hit someone by accident.

That was DAMN good defense for only having 10 guys on the field.  Also, I do not think Schaub had a snowballs chance in hell of running that in...

Edited:  Looks like 83 had his guy posted up...that is where Schaub should have gone with the ball.  Guess it is easy to say that now.

Yeah if you go here there's a pretty good breakdown of the play and where mistakes were made. There's a field of vision screen shot of Schaub as he pump fakes and you can see Walter posted up. You can also see Dressen come open in the back middle of the endzone, but Schaub had turned his shoulder away at that point.

What I didn't notice watching it live was how Jacoby broke towards the middle of the field which prompted Schaub's throw. Unfortunately he broke back outside as soon as the ball left Schaub's hand. Lots and lots of dick stepping by many parties.

They should charge a fee for the short fuckers too.  And the weak fuckers.  If you aren't tall enough, or strong enough to take your shit in and out of the overhead bin without it falling on people, they charge you $1,000 extra.  Each way.

And if you attempt to walk down the aisle with a backpack on, you immediately get fined.  And dope slapped by everyone in an aisle seat.

How about the woman bringing two big, open bags of groceries and a huge purse? "I can't put these in the overhead, they'd spill out!" Turns to the rest of the plane, "Can you believe this woman (the flight attendant), Continental is the worst!"

Aside from mismanaging the clock, which is a given, the only way he can fuck up is to stop running the ball.  Or decide to have someone *other* than Matt Schaub throw a pass inside the 10 yard line.

Fully on board with this thought. Not running the ball in the Monday Night Indy game infuriated me to no end, but Foster still ended up 3rd in attempts on the year. He was only a handful from the top spot. They didn't really have many other great options to run the ball with Ward and Slaton behind him, so while I'm still pissed about his game strategy, I can understand that you have to limit his touches to some degree. Giving him the ball over 350 times is a dangerous game these days. Doesn't mean Kubiak couldn't have used Arian's existing touches in a better manner.

Tate/Ward should be significantly better than Ward/Slaton as secondary backs, so hopefully that will prevent Kubiak from abandoning the run for the sake of limiting Foster's touches.

Several years now.  Back when I was in weight loss mode my wife and I both gave it a shot.  It really kicks your ass.  The sessions are a little over an hour of near constant movement.

I thought they did a really good job putting it together, it was just too much for me.  I think it was day 3 or day 4 where I could barely walk.  I know people throw that phrase out there after a hard work out, but I'm dead fucking serious.  I could barely walk.

If you read up on it, you'll find many suggest that this not be your initial attempt to get into shape, but rather try something more entry level for a month or two in preparation.  When you have to prepare several months for an exercise routine, that should tell you something!

I've given it a go twice now and made it through the first month both times before giving up. After that, traveling for work or vacation or something else disrupts me just enough that lose all motivation. Both times the very first work-out had me completely wiped out to the point that I was laying on the cold bathroom floor trying to not throw up and both times the Plyo prevented me from walking normally for the rest of the week. I was fine for weeks two and three though. I think they did an excellent job with those.

My excuse now is that I've repainted the door frames in anticipation of selling my house. Obviously I can't have the pull up bars marking them up again...

In thinking about that era at second base, I'm afraid all roads lead back to anal fizzures.

This news comes hours after the Braves beat reporter David O'Brien, from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, had reported that the Braves were closing in on a deal for a right handed hitting bat. This news also tells me Astros GM Ed Wade must have received a solid offer for Pence and he is putting it out that Pence is now available to see if another team can top the offer he received.

I assume GMs deal on a fantasy baseball like platform for these situations. I expect that Wade just checked "available" next to Pence's name. Then he went about checking his "looking for:"

Starting Pitching - check
Bullpen - check, check, check, check, check, check (Are you sure its checked? can I put an exclamation mark on it or something...)
First Base - check (someone has to platoon with Wallace)
Second Base - check (have you seen how short our new guy is? not a ball player)
Short Stop - not checked (my boy Barmes is a great signing...Mr. Crane? are you listening...don't need a shortstop...definitely don't need a new GM...hello?)
Third Base - check
Left Field - check (oh dear god, please let this be a need. Carlos Lee, please, anyone, someone take his salary off my hands!!! P.S. Mr. Crane, I had nothing to do with this one...blame the fat boy and Uncle D)
Center Field - not checked (Michael Bourn, ladies and gentleman, our best player. Mr. Crane, are you listening? Oh...Mr. Boras, where did you just materialize from? Jim, earmuffs. Scott, Bourn is total crap.)
Right Field - check (if you take Pence off my hands, I'll need something in return. From our farm, you say? Hahahahahaha...speaking of which...)

Minor Leagues - "We are deep at absolutely no position in our farm system. Our AAA team is equivalent to a third rate independent league catering to the likes of 55 year old Ricky Henderson and Jose Canseco (or, more likely, his brother impersonating Jose). A five foot four second baseman just rocketed through our farm system in about 12 days. We will take literally anything."

(After a couple of innings of wondering this out loud, a guy beside my dad and I politely let us know the fans were screaming Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz, not boooooooooooooooooooo...).

My first game was in 1982 and I was less than a year old. I only know this because my mom has relayed the story to me many times. Jose Cruz hit a homerun and she thought it was hilarious that I slept through everyone, including her, shouting "CRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUZ"

I don't think I ever figured out exactly what game it was, but there weren't that many home games where Cruz homered.

Not sure why every one in the media is getting worked up about the "trainer he hired this offseason." That doesn't appear to be true, but it was never the issue. It was always a between the ears thing for him.

Actually, LSU won its opener against Wake Forest 15-4, but I think that only two long balls were hit by the Tigers. Game 2 brought things back down, but we eeked out a 4-3 win. The Tigers won the final game 9-1. Still, the Tigers hit five home runs in the three game sweep.

Apparently it's become Wake Forest University policy to get curb stomped in any and every athletic competition. The coaches are giving up kidneys to divert attention from the school wide athletic free fall. I'll have to take solace in our 13 ranking in women's field hockey and 25 ranking in men's golf. Some how that doesn't quite offset being the worst basketball team in the major conferences.

It was fun reading Ball Five...to follow up on the aftermath of the orginal book.  But even that is 30 years old now.

If you've never read Shoeless Joe and The Iowa Baseball Confederacy by W.P. Kinsella, they're not bad.  The former is, of course, the source for Field of Dreams.  The latter isn't as good, but I still enjoyed it.

I enjoyed Shoeless Joe but it may be the lone example of where I liked the movie better than the book.

If you haven't read Clemente by David Maraniss, you definitely should.

My Mom found Clemente at a thrift shop for $2 and passed it along. Its fallen off my radar since I moved to a Kindle, sounds like I need to venture back to the physical books for this one.

I pick up Men at Work every now and then and read some random sections, especially this time of year.

Berkman was on for a couple of hours with John and Lance this morning.  I didn't catch nearly all of it, but I did catch:

- Cubs had an offer of almost $10M on the table, but Lance felt more comfortable with the Cards;
- A's promised to "blow him away" with a 2-year deal, but the total money was less than either the Cubs or the Cards;
- with the exception of free swingers (like Derek Bell), he feels "protection" in the lineup is a myth (i.e., Matt Holiday gets pitched the same whether he bats in front of Pooholes or behind him.)

I particularly liked the part where he talked about how Carlos had good hands. Paraphrasing, "I never worried about fly balls in Carlos's direction. He has some issues defensively, but if he can get there, he'll catch the ball. That is not true of all the guys out there. There were times I nervously watched the ball into their glove because there were no guarantees."

No mystery who he's referring to there.

FYI, you cannot watch any of Season 5 until you have Season 4 in the bag.  The first second of Season 5 busts the entire plot of 4, and the plot of 4 is awesome.

A couple weeks ago I finished the second disc (about halfway) and had the ending spoiled by a Bill Simmons NFL picks column. I almost never read that column anymore, but should have known better. I'll finish out the season because Lithgow is pretty awesome, but it is disappointing knowing the end.

I didn't have any problems with comcast (and at least they had the nfl network), but obviously could've been lucky. I used cable cards with hd tivos and so was kind of a needy cable customer. Many more problems with TW.

I had more problems than I could count with Comcast. Any issue required two or three calls to the service desk as they would never suggest the same solution. Even minutes apart, with a history of my calls, they would suggest some entirely different solution. I was once without cable for five days where they explained that I should call back each day to make sure I wasn't being billed. On the fifth day I got a competent person who was astounded I had exchanged my box and went five days without signal. He fixed it in 30 seconds over the phone.

What kills me most is that they are practically boastful in their indifference to quality or customer service. Their boxes and operating system are terrible and they just don't seem to care. There are enough people without a choice in provider that they have no incentive to improve.

I finally switched to DTV and would never go back. I'll find another way to watch Astros games before I switch back.

Went to school in Winston-Salem, NC which is home to Texas Pete. Always thought it was a curious choice of name. Carolinians are proud of their BBQ, and rightfully so, but every restaurant would have their NC made Texas Pete as the hot sauce of choice. It is good stuff though. Especially with Carolina BBQ.

It didn't seem like they made much effort to sell it in Texas until a few years ago.

Lopez - singles between Kaz and 2B. Streak over (13 consecutive batters). Man on first, no outs.

Molina - hits to Manzella who gets a little cute with it trying to get two and gets none (Kaz comes off the bag). Everett lite gets his second error of the night. Man on first and second, no outs. Myers stays in

Ryan - bunting, bunting, bunting...successful sacrifice 5-3. Men on second and third, one out.

Penny is coming out for Stavinoha

Stavinoha - IF in. Works a full count and Ks. Huge. Quickly. Two outs, two runners in scoring pos.

Schumaker - Surprisingly swinging on the first strike. Ball. Swinging again on a breaking ball in the dirt. Brett climbs a ladder and sees a foul ball. Foul again. Ball low and outside. Fouling away. (This AB is longer than most Astros' innings). Fouls again. KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKs.

Nice outing by Brett. In the immortal words of Brett Myers, "Boom, outta here."

Myers back at it...

Pujols - leading off the inning for the second time. Myers gets ahead of Pujols but gives it back and battles with a full count. NICE K by Myers. Great curve.

Holliday - First pitch FB on the hands jams him. Easy ground ball out.

Rasmus - JD/Brownie keep taunting the BBGs counting Myers consecutive outs (been at it for a few batters now). MB retires the side on a lazy fly.

Brownie jabs the BBGs again before signing off.

Towles - grounds to third (distracted by phone call informing me that the Astros are getting national writers following the team counting on the worst start ever)

Myers - Ks on an outside FB

MB - fielders move in, MB watches the first four pitches (2-2) before grounding just foul on the third base side and catching the throw from third on the foot. Bourn's liner to left center gets by Rasmus, Bourn gets third. 2B with one base error.

Kaz - right up the middle but goes 6-3 to end the inning. That makes three innings in a row I believe.

Shumaker - over under on swings going to this AB? 1? Shumaker swings at ball 3...and swings again grounding to Kaz. Money goes to the over.

Blum - Pujols takes it himself to first on an easy grounder. Two away.

Manzella - very briefly shows bunt on ball one, swings away and fouls to even, goes 6-3 to end the inning.

He was one of the reasons I became an Astros fan. One year, he hit more home runs than all but one other team in his league in the minors. I was sooo excited about adding his bat to the major league team that already included Glenn Davis. I was a kid then & didn't know that prospects didn't always pan out. When I think of Eric Anthony, I think of the baseball through the lens of a 10-year-old. It's more fun that way.

That's pretty funny. I was about 7 and remember his first hit for a homerun (though I recalled it off the foul pole, which is not accurate) and was simlarly excited. It was the first season I can remember following. In my baseball card collecting efforts I managed to get about four of his rookie cards.

I have a 7+ year old Thinkpad A30 that still works (for the most part). Its removable and internal battery both died. I replaced the removable battery and the power cord and it kept chugging for a couple months. The dead internal battery was annoying so I replaced that a little later. All of the sudden the new removable battery will not charge. I can't imagine the power cord or battery has suddenly gone bad after less than a year.

As old as it is, I should let it enjoy retirement but If I'm missing something easy I'd put it back in service. Any ideas?

When I said 41+, I meant just that - it'd be a long field goal. Half the time onside kicks don't go 10 yards, because the kicker is trying to kick it as short as possible, but still getting the minimum 10. And if you get any kind of minuscule return...

Not only do they regularly go longer than 10 yards as HH said, but the kicking team cannot return a recovered onsides kick. The chances of recovering the ball inside the 40 would be very slim.

Perserving Manning is part of the attempt to go 19-0.

Playing Manning is the only way to achieve 19-0. The Colts decided that perserving Manning was the best strategy for winning the superbowl. The increased liklihood that they lose the remaining games was an acceptible sacrifice.

Youre certainly not going to achieve that without him.

As the Colts clearly demonstrated by benching Manning.

I thoroughly enjoyed "500 Days of Summer" mainly because [strosrays] it almost perfectly encapsulated my completely flawed and twisted memory of a relationship from long ago that, on quiet and lonely nights, haunts me still [/strosrays].  That, and because I have an unhealthy obsession with Zooey (I watched "Yes Man" twice...Twice!).

Wasn't overly impressed with "District 9", as I thought it was a clumsy hybrid of Alien Nation and The Fly, while copying the style of Blair Witch & Cloverfield without the integrity of adherence to that style.

Meanwhile, I loved (loved, loved) the new Star Trek movie.  It got a little clunky for a segment in the middle, while they swiftly dispensed with every other iteration of Star Trek that has gone before but, otherwise, it was a superb adventure.  The opening 10 minutes is as intense as any you'll see in any movie, regardless of rating (Saving Private Ryan excepted, natch).

FTR, I have yet to see "Avatar", "Inglorious Basterds" and "Pirate Radio", all of which I expect to enjoy.  I have also yet to see "The Road", which I hope will be good but for which I think, having read the book, the word "enjoy" really won't apply.  I suspect that I will have to watch "Se7en" immediately afterwards, to cheer myself up.  That, or do a Google image search for Charlize Theron.

I agree with your take on all these movies. Of your upcoming viewings I thought Pirate Radio was terrible (except for the music), but enjoyed Inglorious Basterds.

I attempted to see Avatar last weekend but it was still selling out every showing. Saw "Up in the Air" instead. I travel a fair amount so it was amusing from that standpoint. Still haven't completely made up my mind on it, but I liked it pretty well.

I used to work in the office complex at Waugh and Allen Parkway.  Every time it rained, there would be an accident.  Without fail.  The road is slick and twisty, and the lines disappear in the wet.  The ex. Mrs Limey also lost control of her car there in the wet, many moons ago, skidded off the road and hit a tree.  No injuries but a scary moment.

My sister did the same. Caught a curb, hit a tree, bounded back into the street. Thankfully a big truck behind her started shielding traffic when they saw her hit the curb. Car was finished but she was fine. I used to live on Allen Parkway, I like that road, but it is dangerous. I loved when it'd rain a bit and they'd put chains across the underpasses with little warning at night. Amazing I never flew threw them. Imagine some did.

So after nearly 4 years with my significant other, we've finally decided to make it official and get hitched in March.  The plan is to do the actual nuptials at Minute Maid park and hang out/party for about 3 and a half hours after the ceremony.  (They only allow you to stay for 4 hours.)  I haven't been to the park in a couple years and don't know if this is possible, but I'd like to find a place near there that has a private room or even just the capacity for 25-40 people to hang out for a few hours after we leave/get kicked out of MM.

Any advice?

Union Station has a party room on the top story which has access to the roof that looks out over the park. Was this mentioned as part of your arrangement? It may hold the same hours as the park itself, but worth a inquiry if they haven't mentioned it.

I was flying three or four times a month on CO and never came anywhere close to getting Platimum status.  I figured it up once, and you had to basically be in the air about 35-50 hours a week.  I fly a lot, but not *that* much.

Connections and refundable fares are the only way to get there if you are primarily flying shorter distances. You get a point per segment so connections help and refundable fares count 2 points per segment. There was one year when our client insisted we use their travel service which only booked refundable fares and I came about 3 points short of Platinum. Haven't reached Gold since.

agreedBest US FF program bar none.  CO Platinum Elite and 3-million miler (lifetime platinum) on AA.  I always choose CO now.

I have had very few problems with Continental and rarely fly anything else. My only gripe with their FF program is that while my stats (trips, days) are similar to yours, the vast majority of flights go from Houston to Wichita, KS. I get 540 miles and one elite point a way. Unfortunately the flights routinely cost as much or more than when I have to fly to Boston or New York (even Alaska was occasionally comparable). So despite flying a fair amount and paying a good sum of money, my elite status is lucky to get very far past silver.

Not a huge deal since first class on the Embraer is the exit row A seat.

For the most part, the only liquids or gels I'll travel with are toothpaste and deodorant. I never remove them from my bag anymore. I think they make a calculated decision if the items appear to be under 3 oz.

I think the problem would be solved if the airlines simply enforced their rules. I doubt that half of the carry-on bags actually fit in the little device that is supposed to measure them (in fact, I have NEVER seen anybody actually test a bag). Enforce that size constraint and the "one other item that's a purse or briefcase or backpack", and the problem goes away. It's folks with the oversize bag with another bag strapped to the top of it, along with a backpack and briefcase, that screw things up. That's nothing other than a flat-out lack of consideration for the other folks stuck in that airplane.

Exactly. I prefer not to check my bag, but I carry an approved suit case (fits the short way in the overhead) and either a briefcase or backback that goes under the seat in front of me. I see absolutely no problem with that. These idiots who try to bring their groceries on board are not the "don't check your bag" crowd as much as they are simply idiots. They are the same ones backing down the shoulder of the highway when they miss their exit.

The gate agents and security checkers should be the ones telling these morons that they can't bring their nine shopping bags from the duty free store on the airplane.

Its an enclosed space that can't be evacuated quickly.  Even a train can be stopped if someone is going around with a gun shooting people.  Not so much on an airplane.  It also takes less explosives to down an airplane than to kill people in a security line.  If a plane crashes everyone dies, also different from a train.

However, this doesn't mean that the security is making us safer.  Just pointing out it is different.

Do these facts unique to an airplane put you at a substantially greater level of perceived threat? So much so that we need to engage in all this security while every other situation where masses are congregated is left unguarded?

Assuming the security was effective, would you put it in place for only airplanes? If not, would you be able to tolerate that level of security everywhere? Where would it stop? and why does it start and stop with airplanes? That's where I was going with that line of thinking (trains, stadiums, etc.)

The "since they are STILL making folks remove shoes" made me think it bothers you.

Bothers me. The shoes off, laptops out, jacket off, no liquids over 3oz. Are we really that much safer? What makes flying on airplanes so much more inherently dangerous than say riding on trains, subways, or going to sporting events, movies, concerts, your office, etc. Hell, go to the airport at a busy time and you can stand in the security line with a whole airplane's worth of people and you will have passed through exactly zero security to that point.

Here's a place: http://www.generalsams.com/

A good friend of mine's family owns this place. I have only been once during the week when it is closed to the public so I didn't get the full experience, but it can definitely get you to your redneck activity quota in short order. They have a few festivals along the way like "The Redneck Games" and "Muddy Gras" which I've heard are absolutely ridiculous (in both good and bad ways).

You can probably find out on the website, but I don't think the property itself rents ATVs but I do think rental places come down to rent theirs out.

The last time I talked to the father he was describing the wet t-shirt contest and how many of the contestants came flooding in from the East Texas strip clubs. "They didn't have teeth, but that wasn't what we were judging."

No, you are right. I guess I was thinking that he deserved to be up. I hope he gets a spot start and can earn Hampton's spot. Normally I'd take Bazardo over Kata or Wright any day, but there is always the fear that Coop will Paulino him. In which case he's better off in RR.

And will we finally find out who the mother is next Monday?

And why does anybody care?  That "mystery" is not at all compelling to me.  They could end the series introducing her for the first time in the last 30 seconds and that would be fine with me.

That was actually the intention of the writers. I saw a recent interview where they said, "that was the idea." Don't know if that's actually what will still happen, but it did seem apparent to the writers that the side stories are far more compelling than the actual meeting the mother part.

It made me a little more optimistic for the direction of the show, and also less confident we'll actually meet the mother on Monday.

How good is the picture quality?  Does it stream seamlessly, or are there fits of starts and stops while it buffers?  Is it worth the extra $100 to get the HD model?  I've heard the regular "pro" model will show an HD picture.

What cable/satellite service are you using? I have an older model Slingbox, I liked it fine before Comcast traded out my cable box. The new Cisco box they provided is not compatible with Slingbox, so mine has been rendered mostly useless.

I primarily used it because I was traveling a lot and didn't want miss Astros games and didn't want to spend the weekends catching up on TV I missed. These days it is only really useful for the Astros games. So many TV shows are available on the internet accessing my recorded shows isn't nearly as important, and maybe MLB.TV is more useful for games.

And if you're going to make up something to stab at people, are you going to pick "table leg"?  Turkey leg, andiron, tomato stake, rolled up newspaper, but tore a leg off the table?  Not the first thing that comes to mind.

Not the first thing that comes to your mind. Assuming you and Ron share the same mental plane may be a stretch. I personally have higher crazy expectations for Ron than I do you. If Ron isn't going table leg on his stories then I don't think he's giving me 100%. The fact that this story is true hardly makes a difference. The topic of retaliation is brought up and Ron Ron goes back and pulls up some 18 year old memory of table leg murder to make his point? Who does that? Ron Artest.

Who else brings stuff like that to the table? Love that guy.

I finally watched this episode today.  Just lazy writing.  Not as much shocking as it is bewildering.

Completely agree. Its the difference between a horror movie actually frightening you vs. startling you. Cheap. I was pissed they brought Tony back at all, and nearly gave up on the season before it started. As ridiculous as bringing him back was, I thought they did a good job to start. Richard Justicing him back to evil has me questioning whether I've wasted my time on this season.

The season reminds me of Beach Road, a James Patterson book with a more ridiculous "shocking" twist at the end. Decent book, as far as those cheap reads go, until the end which is just absurd. One of the worst books I've read as a result.

He asked Locke to apologize to Desmond moments before he was to be judged by Smokey. If Ben was genuine (when is he ever?) in his fear of dying during this trial, it was Desmond he chose to apologize to with his last words. I think that is strange.

He intended to murder his wife, not just shoot him in the shoulder.

Even still, he has purged an entire community, stood idly by when his adopted daughter was killed, and killed or was responsible for countless others. A failed murder and bullet in the shoulder is what he apologizes before? He seemed to care far more for Horace than he did Desmond, why the apology to Desmond?

Beer and Queso / Re: Lost (Spoilers...Potentially)

Again, I know that.  What I want to know is why.  Why is the island the place of healing?  Don't tell me "it just is".  That's a bullshit answer, something Desmond's or Locke's namesakes would never accept.  There's always a reason.  A valid scientific reason.  I wanna know what that is.

They guy in Australia said it had to do with the magnetic properties of the location. The island has some strange magnetic properties as well. The computer in hatch was controlling the release. It is those magnetic properties that healed Rose. How? Shit I have no idea, its a television show and more of a sci-fi show every day. You aren't going to get legitimate scientific explanations for everything. That was evident as soon as smokey showed up.

Everything is important.  Every character, every connection exists for a purpose.  That's the entire theme of the show.  The show is not about coincidence in every day life, it's about purpose and the fact that every minute detail has one.  I want to know what those are.  If you want to watch the show to get all googly about Jack's feelings towards Kate, fine, but you could watch Gray's Anatomy and get the same tingling in your loins.  Lost is supposed to be much deeper than that.

I think every connection has a purpose and it is important that they all were so intertwined. It is fate not coincidence, a huge theme on the show, but they simply cannot get into each one of them. Especially when they decided on a firm end date. I completely agree with you on the love polygon, I think it is worthless. The only love story worth telling in the show is Desmond and Penny.

But back to the show...what was up with Ben's apology to Desmond? In the grand scheme of things, a failed attempt at murder and a bullet in the shoulder is a relatively small transgression in the life of Ben Linus. Why would he apologize for that?

It's obvious she was cured.  That's not the question, it's WHY she was cured.  Again, questions without answers.

This is one answer to one question, which is not going to change your opinion of the show, but she was cured because certain parts of the earth have certain properties that have the ability to heal people. That's why Bernard took Rose to Australia. The healer said that this wasn't the right spot to heal her, but that there are places that can. The island is that place.

As for the numbers, all I'd expound on from what Zipp wrote is that its is simply another example of conincidence and showing how intertwined everyone's life is. Its just a number, but it coincidentially shows up everywhere. Like anything else, if you aren't looking for it you aren't likely to notice it. Once you are looking for it, its everywhere. The flashbacks showed us how many times each of the survivors crossed paths, but when they got on the plane they didn't recognize anyone. They weren't looking for each other, but they've all been bumping into each other their whole lives.

Overall, I think all lot of what you are focusing on is less important. Who cares about the Hurley Libby connection, honestly? I don't think that has any impact on the show in the end. Part of the problem is that for the first three seasons, they didn't have a determined end date. They had to have filler material, and a lot of these connections were just filler further showing how connected everyone was. When the end date was established they narrowed their focus to what was important. Things will got left behind. They clearly aren't going to leave important issues behind.

But, you've given up, so who cares? Stop watching.

I am trying to run JD & Brownie's audio from MLBTV through the stereo while watching the Cardinals HD feed to resolve the announcer / picture quality dilemma.  I think the timing is too far off to make it work.

If you need a long term solution, there is a gadget somewhere that does that. I believe it has a slider bar to adjust the delay on the audio.

Here's what popped up when I was searching...

Quote
The £525million Olympic stadium set to be the flagship of London 2012 could be demolished to make way for a Premier League football ground. Emergency plans have been drawn up to flatten the showpiece venue once the Games are over and replace it with a purpose-built soccer stadium. It comes amid fears the 80,000-seat stadium could be too expensive to subsidise after the event - leaving it a 'white elephant'.

The county and the city got into a dispute about getting the Dome back up to code before the rodeo, something about whether the Dome was still grandfathered under old code. In any event, I recall reading somewhere that the cost of demolition and removal was still more than just keeping up minimal maintenance for the next two or three decades, but maybe that's changed. Plus, they could probably charge $18,485 per space for the super-duper-VIP-get-your-own-personal-ball-washer parking, judging by how much they charge for parking in a dirt lot 13 miles away.

I heard the same about the cost to demolish vs. maintain.

From a purely economic standpoint, I find it hard to believe that there isn't a better alternative when you look 20-30 years out. Can the Dome really safely survive another 20-30 years with minimal maintenance? It sounds like they are ignoring the fact that at some point in the future the Dome will have to be significantly restored or destroyed. You can't pay minimal maintenance forever.

Limey, what is this I hear about them destroying the Olympic Stadium after 2012? I was poking around seeing how much stadiums cost to demolish and saw some article about the possibility that they destory the stadium and rebuild a football stadium in its place. Did I read that right, have you heard anything about it?

Is it formatting correctly for everyone else? Maybe its just IE6 which I have to use on the work comp, but the right bar and background grey is falling to the bottom of the page. Makes most of the text hard to read.

Also the little tan text boxes that pop up to provide information on the link get in the way. I don't know if that's something that can be disabled on that end or has to be on my end.

Otherwise, it looks like it will be a very sharp looking page. Nice job.

I had just considered opening up a thread on this. I've been slammed at work so I haven't had a chance to see any of the interviews or hear much chatter about it. I like that he says he'll be aggressive, but I feel like that's what all DCs say when their first hired on. The guys on the radio this morning said they heard the same from Richard Smith, but I don't have that good a memory.

Who knows how much input he was allowed under Smith, but hopefully it wasn't much. It just makes me wonder why we didn't promote him in-season. They clearly had little interest outside the organization.

It seems like I see less UT stuff on campus now than when I started working here.  One complaint was/is the availability of UH stuff off campus for purchase.

I believe part of the problem is that UH is very strict about licensing their trademarks. Obviously the larger issue is the laws of supply/demand.

I really didn't mind Justice's blog several years ago. Every once in awhile he'd throw out a blog post like the last one and you could tell it was all tongue and cheek. Those types of posts are always going to draw more attention, so he could use them like occasional crack hits to get a quick high on hits. Late to the party, don't want to get into the cowboy mess, but want to concede that my argument for Kubiak was ill timed after that defeat. As thankful I was that the defense looked terrible and Richard Smith's job became less secure, the offense and special teams were worse.

Kubiak was terrible yesterday. I still contend that he and Schaub are not the primary issues here, but both had terrible days. That's going to happen, but even though we were playing for nothing more than the pride of a winning season, that's a hell of a lot more thank the Raiders were playing for.

Other than the obvious, my biggest concerns with the game was that Richard Smith didn't blitz ever (despite that being a problem for the Raiders), and that Kubiak abandoned the running game against the worst team in the NFL against the run (despite his dedication to the run with Tennessee, a great defense).

Given the improvements the offense has seen and how (until yesterday) the players seemed to be playing hard for Kubiak and speaking up for him, I think he's earned another season's chance. Mostly because I think he can still improve and that there are no attainable coaches that are going to come in and make an immediate difference for the better. Hopefully we can get a better D Coordinator to team Kubiak with, and Kubiak studies clock management all offseason.

Oh well, on to next week. Kubiak clearly makes mistakes, and he made every one of them last week.

I am not sure I could find a more unreliable source of information than a Cubs' message board, but his discussion with the Comcast rep seemed to say that it would be a part of the base digital package for the first year, then they would decide whether to move it into a sports package.

If they have a financial interest in the channel, you'd think they would want to drum up interest by making it available to most. Hopefully this is true.

I know that Comcast (and most the major providers) has a financial interest in the network, but I haven't seen anything on what package it will be available under. I assume its one level higher than whatever I have.

Comcast never fails to dissappoint me, but it seems like that's par for the course with all providers.

I'll be happy to see Harold Reynolds back on the air, should I be so lucky to receive the channel.

The term "bigger back" is driving me nuts, i need clarity.  Are y'all wanting an every down back as opposed to a third down back, or wanting to try and find the next Brandon Jacobs?  Just because a back is large does not mean they will be an every down type of back, or better in short yardage situations for that matter.  The most durable back in the history of the NFL (Emmitt Smith) was only 10-15 pounds heavier than Slaton.  Dallas did this when they drafted two backs this last draft...one as a 3rd down, or change of pace back in Felix jones and one as an "every down" type of back to spell Marion Barber or to use if he were injured.  I think y'all are wanting the latter...and you never know when you draft what your will wind up with.  Case in point is Steve Slaton.  Thought they were getting a change of pace or third down guy and wound up with an every down stud.

I definitely understand the frustration with that term, and by no means am I asking for another every down back. That is Slaton's job for the foreseeable future. The Texans have been bad in short yardage situations. I think a bigger back, a guy who can push the pile a little more is what they'd need. Slaton can run between the tackles, can take hits, can push guys back, etc but he hasn't excelled in those goal line draw plays where the defense is stacking the box. Plus, why beat him up on on plays like that if we don't have to.

Emmitt is often used as an example of where size doesn't matter, but he's also a top 5 running back of all time. Few will live up to that. But, you are right, never know what you are getting from the draft. I think a weapon in those short yardage situations would be one of the few things our offense could use. Otherwise, I'd rather spend the money/picks on defense.

Adding the spead of Adibi on the outside certainly helped.  If I were the Texans GM/Coach i would look safety first round and MIKE second, moving DeMeco to the strong side backer.  Third round Guard/Center.  Four round edge rusher.  I am still not thrilled about R. Smith's defense.

I imagine they are going best available defense for most the draft. I don't think there's any defensive positions where we couldn't use the help. I like the linebacking core if Adibi, Ryans, Diles can stay healthy and effective. Weaver and Johnson are jokes on the line, they can/need to be replaced, along with basically the entire secondary. Dunta is playing better and better, but still not himself. Reeves is playing better too, but is still not a good DB. Bennett regressed, but also wasn't given much of an opprotunity. Molden didn't get much of a chance either and is done for the season. The next good safety we get will be the first.

At some point they need to draft a bigger back to spell Slaton, right? 4th round or so? I don't know what free agent options are out there.

Quote
No, this team should be AT A MINIMUM a 10-11 win team, even with Matt Schaub as QB

My favorite part of this statement is that the Texans could be a 12, 13, 14? win team if not for our worthless QB who constantly steps on his dick when he's not throwing for 400 yards and leading game winning drives at Miami and Green Bay (games we "should have won" by the way).

The Texans coaches have said they think Okoye's improvement/recovery from injury has made a major difference, but they could be stupid or lying.

And coaches are known to be totally unbiased, forthcoming, and truthful in their media sessions. They practically caged Dunta up to keep him from spouting off on Smith.

I am sure Okoye has improved, but I don't see that he has made improvements more significantly than any others. Nearly every player on the roster has improved their level of play. Whether it be Adibi, DeMeco, Robinson (DelJuan or Dunta), Reeves, Bennett, etc. they have all shown great improvement.

Its their new scheme that has allowed so much improvment, not that they all suddenly decided not to suck and Richard realized he had the tools to be more aggressive. It is a knock on Smith that he allowed his defense to be so stagnant and predictable for the majority of the season. How many times did they have to get burned by Garrard up the middle before he adjusted? We'll never know. They lost the game before we could find out.

In other news, love Schaub's response to Finnegan's helmet to helmet shot ... "he's just a little guy." He hopped up every time last week and seems to be proving that his injury issues have been more the result of cheap shots and unlucky breaks than being fragile.

I think the Richard Smith bashing is overdone. You really think he had an epiphany or is it that DeMeco Ryans and Dunta got healthy and Okoye improved significantly?

I don't think Okoye is playing all that much better. Sure he made a few huge plays, but all told he's still not significantly better. He's certainly not the difference. There was a drastic change in schemes. They started blitzing.

Its not as if Smith's defensive woes started this year either. He has a track record. He deserves some credit for the turnaround, but he is a much bigger problem than Kubiak has been.

Huh?  Did you watch those games?  They completely dominated the Packers, and should have won 40-0.  They beat the Dolphins handily, and if not for their classic dick stepping, it would not have been close.  Yesterday was close, but there is no way you can say they should have lost.  There is no win that they should have lost.  They should easily be 9-5 right now.

No team wins every game they "should" win. Every team, even the great ones, lose games they shouldn't. So saying Kubiak "needs" to win every game he "should" win to be a decent coach is ridiculous. Green Bay (on a short week, in GB, 0 degrees) and Tennessee (12-1) were "should" wins? Really? I mark those soundly in "could" win games, but assuming victory in those situations is not reasonable and bitching that the margin of victory isn't greater is ludicrous.

The early losses were more a factor of Richard Smith sleepwalking through the first three quarters of the season than Gary Kubiak. Kubiak is running one of the better offenses in the league, while (until recently) Richard Smith was running one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Given our tough schedule to start, the hurricane bye week, and RosenFAIL for 5.5 games, I'd say 9-7 is an accomplishment. Few reasonable people were predicting better than that to start the season. None would have predicted that given the circumstances.

No doubt Kubiak is making mistakes, but who doesn't? Fisher's call on 4-3 was Blagojevich level dumb. Your level of expectations for this team are absurdly high.

So to me, getting Ty on essentially a one-year deal at about $7 mil (what the consensus seems to be for his arb award) seemed like a fair, and desirable, deal.

A good deal (which I disagree that Wiggington is at $7-8 million) does not make it a good buy. I don't care if they start selling 911s for $50k, I can't afford it right now. Same goes for Drayton. Where else would you suggest he cut to get his payroll down to the $100 million he needs?

So at this point, does anyone have a ballpark idea of how much money the club has left to spend?

Link

No idea where he JdJO'd it from, but Chip the Fan Blogger at Chron.com said their current roster could cost around $95 million. Don't know if that was before the Michaels signing, but I think it safe to say there isn't much room left under that $100.

Can't imagine the Astros prospects for profit are that great with a $100 mil payroll. They already run one of the leanest organizations in baseball, so if they aren't substantially cutting payroll, there isn't much fat left. Can't feel too bad about for The Impoverished Grocer considering the team is worth 3+ times what he bought it for, but I also don't expect him to be taking big Astro losses while he's likely lost a considerable percentage of his wealth (along with the rest of us).

Thanks for the effort. Do you think $6.7 is generous for Valverde? I feel like larger numbers are thrown around for him. Dickie Justice said that double last year's salary would be a deal (for both Valverde and Wiggington), which is how he supported the larger estimate. $6.7 is right around Valverde's requested salary last year. No doubt he'll be requesting a much larger figure this year. To get $6.7 mil the Astros would have to win arbitration.

I'd think Geary could pull more than a $375k raise.

Still doesn't get to $120, but it definitely puts you a solid 12-15 over the $100 mil they want to spend, not including Wolf/Hampton/Peavy/whoever. Speaking of which, last years should be a bit higher for Wolf's portion.

For those not aware of it and in need of something to read in the void, this is a defensive analysis prepared each year by David Pinto, author of the Baseball Musings blog.

Quote
Baseball Info Solutions sent me their fielding data, and that means it's time to start presenting the 2008 Probabilistic Model of Range. If you're new to this, you can find explanations in this archive. Basically, for each fieldable (non inside the park home runs) ball put in play, six parameters are used to determine how difficult it was to field the ball. A probability of turning the ball into an out is calculated, and those probabilities are summed. That gives us expected batted balls turned into outs. We turn that into a predicted DER (defensive efficiency record), compare that to the actual DER and calculate a ranking.

PMR

Observations of note:
Pence was one of the Astros' worst performers - not a surprise around here.
Wiggington was the worst perfomer (3rd base stats)
Blum was the best at 9th (3rd base)
Miggy and Carlos are average - along with much of the rest of our team

As a team, the Astros were the 6th best defensive squad.

I missed whether he came back in after the INT on the underthrow to Leach, but if he did, then it is (yet another) strike against Kubiak.

Schaub came in for several more drives that quarter, and it resulted in a couple fumbles (one recovered, one lost). He did not look the same, but it wasn't as though he looked terrible. He was still passing frequently and accurately. He was benched because his knee stiffened up during halftime.

I'm sure his knee was bothering him, but that interception was simply a poor throw by Schaub. He threw off his back foot and short armed the throw. He had all the space in the world to throw beyond the wide open Vonta. Even with his knee injury he had displayed more than enough arm strength to get that ball where it should have been.

I think there's fair debate on whether he should have stuck with Schaub considering he made a terrible decision and was limping, but I don't think that one play alone demonstrated that he was too injured to proceed. He made a bad decision, which he's done several times in the red zone. Unfortunately, our backup has proven more likely to make that same mistake.

presuming Wake Forest never quite rises to top two status, and the champions of aforementioned conferences have one loss between them.  Wake's a solid, well-coached team, but they'd be utterly overpowered against most of the teams on that list.

Really, I think its unbelievable that there can be serious conversations about the national title possibilities for Wake Forest Football. I think they'll have a real hard time going undefeated (@Miami the primary concern) and don't see how they get in the top 2 without it, but they play the right kind of football to make a run. Veteran, efficient quarterback, solid D and very experienced (most have been redshirted, nearly all returned from last year), force lots of turnovers, commit few, good coaching. Running game hasn't been as good as expected, but ACC ROY last year should continue to improve.

That said, I'll be making plans for the Meineke Car Care Bowl

Bottom 6: Wright in to pitch, rain in to drive off remaining fans

LaRoche: Wright appears to have trouble with command, likely due to the heavy rain. LaRoche rips one to the left center gap. Erstad almost gets it with a diving attempt in the rain. Erstad gets up and yells at the umps for not calling the game. Man on second, no outs

Bautista: K's on a high fastball.

Umps in and the game is probably over. The grounds crew has to wait 45 minutes before calling the game, and could potentially start it back up if they think the weather will clear later.

Clouds are moving overhead, the 4th is off on and running with no score or rain...for now.

Tejada hits a foul homerun to the big steel spiral walkway in left, then grounds to short. 1 out

Pence RIPS a homer to deep center. Over the "PIRATES" hedge in the batters eye area. A "hanging fastball" according to JD. 1 out. The race for five innings is on for the Astros, the slow play is on for the Pirates.

Wiggington lines one to center. JD comments on Snell's delivery, he appears to be tiring. The bullpen starts to work.

Wiggington out by a couple steps on a stolen base attempt, not even close. Perhaps this was part of the race for the official game strategy...JD speculates as well. Rain starting to come down.

Ausmus walks and that's the end for Snell. Man on first 2 outs.

4th inning PBP to continue in next post following new pitcher TJ Bean (?)

Wilson flies out
McClouth flies out
Sanchez singles
Doumit grounds to Berkman who gets the lead (and final) out at second, but Tejada launches the ball into the stands in an attempt to record a fourth out.

Rain clouds look bad, bullpens were covered up during the inning and the grounds crew came out after they left the field. It would be a shame if Backe's outing was interrupted.

Back to the top of the order for the Astros in the third.

Erstad gets behind early and grounds to second, 1 out.

Loretta behind 0-2 as well on a tough low curve called a strike. Loretta swings at the next curve which is a bit lower and grounds out. Close play due to a tough throw, but Loretta is out. 2 outs

Snell throws four straight balls to Berkman. Man on first, 2 outs.

2 more balls to Lee, next fouled, Carlos watched a hittable pitch and was visibly upset about it, fouled the next down the left field line, and flies out to center. 3 outs.

Bay gets his bat on a decent curveball, grounds out to third, 1 out

Nady singles just between Wiggington and Tejada on a weakly hit ground ball. He picked the ball nearly off the dirt. Another good pitch hit by the Pirates. Man on first, 1 out

LaRoche rips one just past a diving Berkman. Backe didn't get that fastball in far enough. Man on first and second, one out.

Batista strikes out swinging at big curve outside and in the dirt. Man on first and second, two outs.

Thanks to the growing LaRussa fan base, the 8th spot is Snell in a key situation and Backe Ks him on a low outside fastball (questionable strike, but I'll take it).

I'm afraid it will have to get really bad tonight before Coop pulls him due to the winded bullpen.

Same situation as his last outing, as I recall. Astros rally forced him out after 5.

That was a bomb by McClouth, and Doumit really slammed that visitor window out there in left right. They aren't fooled out there.

just shows the difficulty in baseball scouting i guess.

Pinwheel was talking about this on the radio today. He said the same thing about multiple scouts being interested in him due to his abilities as a pitcher and hitter. Obviously you will try to develop the pitcher side, as its more valuable, but what Pinwheel had heard from scouts was that the Astros waited too long before deciding to make this move. His scout's quote was, "This kid is a ballplayer, he'll make it to the majors one way or the other."

Take it for what its worth, considering the source, but it was an interesting topic.

On a happier note, the Rays have just taken the lead against the Sawks, and they're threatening to add on.

I was going to go with a happier route by mentioning Bourn and Lee getting after each other an inning or two ago. That was pretty funny, mostly seeing how small Bourn looks next to him. He looked like a Pomeranian going after a Golden Retriever.

Hell, doesn't need to be a league. It sad when you realize you can't do anything as well as you used to.

As hard as that must be for Ausmus, at least he has come to that realization (cough Henderson) and he'll likely end it on his terms. That has to be better than leaving injured like Bagwell or likely Smoltz. Still can't be easy when you've got nothing to blame but age.

Or maybe he just knows what his role is on the team?

He knows his role for sure, that's what he signed up for. The resignation in his voice is what surprised me most I guess. You rarely hear athletes talk that way while they are still playing.

Definitely close to the end of the road for Brad.

I'm afraid he hurdled the road block a little while ago. I like the guy, but his time as a starting catcher has been extended by the ineptitude of the Astros to develop one.

Towles is hardly better now than when he was sent down. He is not that much better than House at the moment. He needs to play every day in a league he can handle.he was not promoted; Q got hurt. I am not watching tonight, of course. Does he look a lot better to you?

He looks no better or worse to me, so I agree that he needs more time in AAA playing everyday, but I don't think a 15 day job as starter with the big club will hurt. As long as they let Towles continue to develop down there when Q is back, I don't see how it can hurt his development too much.

I think talent wise Ausmus should have been getting Q's starts before Q was injured. That's what makes me believe that Astros really don't want to send Brad out there every day.

It was surprising to hear Ausmus talk about his role during the game today. He was pretty frank about the fact that his career his behind him and he was here to help. Sounded defeated. I don't know if that's his realization or Astros management that has told him his career as a starter is over.

I think the problem is that the Astros feel that Ausmus shouldn't be the every day catcher, and from what I've seen House can't be that either.

I was going to say the same.

Jim, you think Ausmus should get Q's starts instead of JR. Will the short stint in the MLB really stunt his development that much if he's getting the starting job?

Probably not the first impression Towles wanted to make upon his return. Passed ball, almost bats into a DP, and gets stolen on plus error and the run scores as a result...

Hope he can turn it around with some good ABs

360 ftw...until the red ring of death rears its ugly head.

Now that Limey has made his decision, this input may not matter, but I have a 360. Not a big gamer at all, the xbox gets used for playing movies more than anything else.

I did get the red ring of death, and so have most people I know with 360s. For as annoying as that can be, they actually do a pretty great job of fixing it. I was very surprised. You report the incident online, a box shows up at your door within a couple days with return postage, packing tape, etc. (When I showed up at UPS to drop off the package, another identical 360 return box was sitting on the counter). The system comes back in a week or so and they give you a month's membership to xBox Live for the inconvenience.

I suppose I've become so jaded by other customer service experiences that coming across one that does it right seems above and beyond the call of duty.

I may still get a PS3 simply because its the best BluRay player for the price. Would seem ridiculous to have two game systems that I rarely play though.

If you're willing to spend the money this is supposed to be the fastest, most reliable, and most expandable, programming-wise, deal.

I've got a buddy working for AT&T and he's been talking this up for awhile. I don't know anyone who has actually used it though. It is still being rolled out and not available in many areas. Unless you've received some marketing material in the mail your area probably hasn't been equipped.

I wasn't aware that the internet was all that much better than regular DSL. I think you may be able to pay more for better service, but I think the standard rate package includes regular DSL.

I would probably move to this if it were available in my area, just to consolidate providers on what appears to be a better provider than Comcast. I have heard that it can take awhile to get everything installed. New service requires quite a bit of wiring work. My friend said to allow up to 6 hours for installation.

I've had a hate relationship with golf for the last ten or so years, but have for whatever reason begun to sort of like (not love) it again and have played the last four or five weeks.

I just finished a great golf book. It is a personal account of this writer's return to golf after a 25 year layoff. Maybe you can relate. I found it hilarious. Its called "A Downhill Lie" by Carl Hiaasen. Link.

He typically writes novels and contributes to the Miami Hearld. I have read most of his fiction which is also very funny. Great satirist. The books are crime/mystery type deals with an environmental kick, and all set in South Florida.

Somewhat relatedly, what do you guys with Dish or DirecTV do for internet? I'd like to get rid of Comcast for all the reasons stated above, but mostly because of their awful DVR box (used to have TiVo, decided the cost of buying a new HD one plus the monthly charges wasn't worth it. I am beginning to reconsider if I don't switch to Dish).

My parents have used DirecTV for TV and TWC/Comcast for internet for awhile now. I just don't know that I want to deal with two seperate providers (especially if Comcast is one of them). I have only ever used cable for internet, so I'm not sure about the other products out there who they are packaged with, what the trade offs are, etc.

On the rain out issues, most people seem to have been rarely affected by them. I haven't used a dish regularly for about 8 years, but back then it seemed to constantly plague me in any rain slightly harder than normal (summer thunderstorms). Sounds like they have it figured out.

Are we assuming that he'll accept the assignment?  Not sure on waiver rules, but he might be able to tell the Tiggers to eff off, and force a trade or release.  In which case, whoever gets first pick can take him for league minimum...and they will.

At least he'd find the records books again, but as "The worst player to walk away from $29 million." He'd be like bizarro Steve Francis.

I've had my 80GB video Ipod for two years now and it looks like the sizes are similar.

I'm no expert for sure, but I've also had an 80GB for awhile. I think a big part of the storage issue is that the larger iPods have magnetic disk hard drives vs. flash card type drives (in the iPhone, iTouch, nano, shuffle, etc). Obviously disk drives take up more space and my guess is that they can't fit all the phone mechanics in with a hard drive and that larger screen.

They are making pretty huge sized flash drives these days (Samsung released a 64 GB), but I'm guessing its cost prohibitive at this point.

Speaking of flash drives, I have a feeling those might become more common place in playing movies in the near future. We are already starting to see a lot more ability to download movies to your computer to view them. So either people will be directly connecting their computers to their entertainment systems or using flash cards to carry the movie from the computer to your TV. Some new TVs already have flash card inputs.
