Tomorrow's game
« on: October 05, 2015, 04:37:26 pm »
is at 7 central.  I'm dropping by Avalon Diner (where Frito pie has been on the menu since it opened in 1938) at 6 for dinner.

Well that kills that.  I can't go at noon.  The other choices are Gabby's Barbecue, 3101 N Shepherd Dr (on North Shepherd, supposed to be excellent), Onion Creek (also on the North Side, very good), Bubba's Texas Burger Shack (underneath 59 South, I've only had the burgers), Goode's Armadillo Palace (very good, with big chunks of venison, and it worked last time, in more ways than one), Benjy's (vegetarian, but I've had it, and they have good martinis), James Coney Island (their chili sucks), and El Real #7 (I've only had it catered, not in the restaurant).

I've never had it but Cream Burger also has an old school style frito pie. Served in the bag for extra credit (if that's what you want to refer to it as).

Any recommendations for frito pies in NYC somewhat near the stadium? I figured it's only six hours away and might as well go and piss off a bunch of New Yorkers at the game  with a rainbow gut Nolan Ryan jersey. Was surprisingly easy to get a ticket....

Probably in N. Manhattan, but it'll have massaged anchovies on it.

You know you cant get a Frito Pie anywhere in Perth, who would have believed it?

I can't get to see or hear the game, have to sneak scores where and when opportunities arise.  I just hope I am watching baseball on the weekend... and fuck the Yanks.

I'm up for meeting anywhere that Neil mentioned.  I've heard that El Real's is served in the bag, but don't quote me on that.

El Real has the advantage of a margarita, not that I need to drink anything that early.

"Raleigh-Durham" is the airport.  You're either in Raleigh or you're in Durham.  Hopefully not the latter.  That said, if Sonic is all you got, it's all you got.  Or you could make your own.

We could watch it at our house, it's not far.  I've never signed up for high definition tv, but there's beer.

Durham is even cooler than Asheville these days, which is where my flag's planted.

And on another note, has anybody ever had the frito pie at Stiles Switch BBQ in Austin? That was the best I've ever had.

Sonic doesn't stock Fritos anymore, so I ended up cobbling together my own - some Fritos from the vending machine at work, and a chili-cheese hot dog, hold the hot dog.

Likely a better experience than I had. I should have gone that route.

Princes in the tunnels was offering a Frito Pie special. It was crudely advertised (sharpie on printer paper) and seemed serendipitous. The cause was sweeping the city in such a way that last minute crudely arranged specials had to be arranged. It felt slightly less serendipitous when the "Frito Pie Special" was followed by "*Chicken*". As ill-advised as that is, it at least demonstrated that they had Fritos. I'm sure they had normal chili and cheese.

Sure enough, they are able to order me a non-bird chili pie. Unfortunately, the crude advertisement left out "Burger." The chili pie was delivered in a hamburger bun. In an abundance of caution and deference to the BBGs, I avoided the bun. It does not rank highly on my list of chili pies.

The nerves are setting in. Or the chili pie.

Trying to calm them by reading every article I can find. I did the same during the entire off day between Pujols' homer and Game 6. Got absolutely nothing done at work.

Not great for productivity at work, but nice to be this amped about baseball again.

Boone's Farm? That is for sorority chicks. If you want to sacrifice to the BBGs and get homeless drunk at the same time, grab a Thunderbird or ride the Night Train. However, Boone's Farm may pair better with Frito pie. The Night Train is best consumed after a bologna and mayo sandwich on white bread--the first solid meal you've had in 36 hours.

A few Frito Pie optons in NYC

Thanks for the link!

Traffic ruined my hipster frito pie plans. Improvised at a gas station. 3 day old chili and nacho cheese right in a frito bag.

I'll be the guy in the empty section after the consequences of that hit.

Borden's Ice Cream Shop in Lafayette.
A paper plate full of Fritos covered in hot dog chili and Velveeta. Plus a bonus chili dog.

Fritos, check.

Shredded cheddar, check.

Stag chili, no beans, check (bleh).

Sliced jalapeño's, check.

Heading down to the wine cellar for a vintage 2015 bottle of Mad Dog 40/40.

A nice zinfandel.  Maybe a Turley.

Appreciate you recommending Turley, NeilT.  You're a damn fine, highly intelligent man.  Any of our Zinfandels would be the saving grace to frito pie of this caliber.  To wit: I convinced my girlfriend last weekend to make her yankee chili (out of common decency, I'll decline to reveal the list of ingredients).  This seemed to have a positive effect on the outcome of the game that night.  Depending on what time I can get out of the winery this evening, that may be the order of the day again.

Frito pie made and eaten. Used Colby Jack cheese for extra luck.

El real has outstanding Frito pie.

Ingenious move, and clearly what helped the Astros get on the board first tonight. Once again, Jim providing the veteran leadership this board needs.
