What a difference a year makes!
Dombrowski’s firing (https://www.yahoo.com/sports/dave-dombrowski-red-sox-fired-world-series-041332777.html) came minutes after the team finished up a 10-5 loss to the rival New York Yankees. With the loss, Boston now sits 17.5 games back from the Yankees in the AL East at 76-67. That’s a far cry from the team’s 108-win pace last year, but still decent enough that Dombrowski’s firing is a stunner.

Nice rant, Ty! Well done!!
Link? I have seen the term used a few times w/o definition. Can you find a link that defines it?
I couldn't. No amount of reading - or searching - will produce unwritten definitions of "long-standing" (but unwritten) "norms and idioms of this site". It's a little like a secret code. Thanks to Bench (http://www.orangewhoopass.com/forums/index.php?topic=121120.msg666408#msg666408) - and JimR (http://www.orangewhoopass.com/forums/index.php?topic=121120.msg666407#msg666407) also - for looking for it in vain and to Astros Fan in Big D (http://www.orangewhoopass.com/forums/index.php?topic=121120.msg666402#msg666402) for pointing me in the direction of some of his examples. If he survived being Cabrera'd, maybe I can.
For any "Guests" that may not know - if there are any - the "Snuffy" definition of "Cabrera" or "Cabrera'd" is "already posted somewhere". I figured the RS firing was headline newsworthy, since it's an indication of the Astros progress toward "Taking it Back!", but it was posted here (http://www.orangewhoopass.com/forums/index.php?topic=121108.msg665768#msg665768) by the brave Astros Fan in Big D.
For future reference, has anyone, chronicled a list of the long-standing norms and idioms of this site?

If true, I'm almost embarrassed for them. They owe the fans more than that.

There has to be more to it than 76-67 following a WS title. People get fired all the time for malfeasance of some sort or simply not being aligned with company management. But management needs to address it, not make the staff handle the public relations.

+1 Maybe the chickenshit owners saw that Dombrowski was slowly doing to Boston what he did to Detroit, where he left the club saddled with big contracts and aging players with nothing in the farm system. Detroit sucks today because of Dombowski's ignoring of player development through the draft.

I think they already have obscene commitments for next year: Price ($32M), Sale ($30M), Bogaerts ($20M), JD Martinez ($23.75M, if he opts in), Pedroia ($13M, ouch), Rusney Castillo ($14.75M, anybody seen him lately?), Eovaldi ($17M). In fact, it looks like Vasquez is the only other guy under contract ($4M), and they've well short of a team. Lots of pre-arb and arb guys. Betts will cost them a fortune. They've already got $159+ in commitments. If Sale and Eovaldi are truly injured, Pedroia is washed up, and Castillo is still doing his disappearing act,, they are well and truly fucked. Baseball-reference estimates their payroll at $224M, $223M, and $238M for the next three years. Imagine what happens when they have to pay Devers.

My fervent hope is this reflects a fatal flaw in Boston's organization that will hamstring them in coming years.

You and me both. But it demonstrates the difficulty of Luhnow's upcoming tasks. Cole presents a very difficult case in point: there's no denying his quality and value, but he may well receive offers along the line of $30M for 6 or 7 years. Do you make that commitment, knowing that you've got other guys coming in the pipeline that need to be paid too? Or do you thank him for his service and try to find other, younger replacements? Hard call.

Totally agree. Three maybe, four unlikely.

I agree as a general principle but think Cole might be the exception given his age and track record. But I would still be pleasantly shocked if they worked out a deal along those lines.

I could see the Astros doing 4 years guaranteed with 3 years of options... but I would still question how they are going to fit another $30MM+ into the payroll and not pay luxury tax.

One has to think that 15 dollar beers and real cheese on nachos can pay for that luxury tax hit if the team keeps on rolling.

Maybe the luxury tax is unavoidable if they want to keep enough guys around while this window is open. Remember that their 2020 payroll is already halfway there with only four players (Verlander, Greinke, Altuve, Bregman).

I'd venture to say being subject to the luxury tax is a requirement, because the other teams are doing it.

Also this. Red Sox, Cubs, and Yankees are well over the threshold, Dodgers are just under it. Even if you spend money wisely it will be hard to keep pace without going into the luxury tax.

The Astros under Lunhow represent the antithesis of a team that follows any trend. They are trendsetters.
There are draft penalties included in the competitive balance agreement that would probably outweigh any money concerns.
Plus, Lunhow is on record multiple times saying they would not exceed the limit that creates a penalty.

Circumstances change, as the acquisitions of JV and Greinke and the extensions for JV, Altuve, and Bregman prove without a doubt.

Yep, and Luhnow wants to win as much as possible while the window is open. Cole keeps it open, but 6-7 years are too many.

The point is that nothing they say is binding on their future decisions. I think it’s unlikely they go over the salary cap, but the statements themselves don’t mean much.

Did not realize y’all talked. I have not read anything like that, but it does not matter. Nothing said before the next decision matters.

When it comes to the Luxury Tax, the new CBA coming down the pike might change things. Who knows what the tax might be or what the penalties for going over are, or if the players manage to get rid of it. I feel like baseball will be pretty different after the next CBA goes into effect, for better or worse.

I did not look carefully enough (aka read) before I posted this thread. I Cabrera’d. Took some deserved "Cabrera" heat for it. Now I know what Cabrera is. Understand how it helps avoid the clutter of multiple posts/threads on the same topic on this busy forum. Have seen duplicate game threads deleted in the Game Zone in the past, but did not realize until this thread that was a Cabrera correction.
Thank you for trying to help me and for looking for/providing a link to the glossary!
