Julia Morales tweet:
RHP Josh James suffered a right quad strain and is no longer a candidate for the starting rotation. He played catch today and Astros are hopeful he’ll pitch in enough games to be in the bullpen on Opening Day.
-
My least favorite thread to appear.
-
And so it begins
-
Shit. He'll be extremely fun to watch out of the bullpen, but shit.
@Chandler_Rome: A.J. Hinch on the fifth starter competition without Josh James: “The kids that everyone will immediately go to — Whitley, Martin, Bukauskas — those guys are not options to break out of camp. They’re not ready to jump into a rotation.”
Candidates remain Peacock, Valdez, Rodgers
Rome also adds Perez & Armenteros are candidates as well.
ETA: But see McTaggart—"The fifth starter competition is essentially down to Peacock and Valdez."
-
Peacock. He might have won it anyway.
-
Peacock. He might have won it anyway.
Yeah, it’ll be Brad. He will probably have to pitch his way out of the spot rather than the others pitching their way into it. Having said that, I hope it is the 2017 dominant version of Brad Peacock and not what we saw last year. Not that he was bad, he just didn’t look as sharp as the year before. Admittedly, that was a career year so it will be hard to repeat, but we can hope.
I think we will be fine no matter who winds up in the rotation or the bullpen. I actually think there may be a little more pressure coming out of the bullpen so Peacock might handle that better. But again, I think we are fine either way. One of the things I love about baseball is when the young kids get their shot. As such, I am really rooting for Perez, Valdez and Armenteros. Valdez just has to throw a few more strikes and he will be solid. Perez has got to move the ball around a little better and keep it in the yard. His stuff looks electric. And Armenteros, well, I really liked what I saw from him last spring. I believe he has a chance to be sneaky good. He may be the sleeper in the bunch excluding Whitley, Martin and JBB.
Cant wait for the season to get going.

McHugh was scheduled for two innings but came out after one due to back soreness.
-
Peacock would already have been in most (if not every) other teams’ rotation plans. They have built incredible depth in this organization.
-
I think James could be a force out of the pen. 7th or 8th inning shut-down guy.

No doubt. He could also throw 100ish innings as a starter. So could Framber, Whitley or a bunch of other guys.
I hope that Cionel Perez just tears it up in ST this year, I liked watching him in his brief appearances.

Deetz "is a couple of weeks away from getting into games" says McTaggart (https://www.mlb.com/astros/news/astros-pitchers-easing-into-spring-games).
We'll see how well that timeline holds up.

I wonder how far apart they and DK are. I don't know about all you guys, but I am worried about the starting rotation after Verlander and Cole.
-
I wonder how far apart they and DK are. I don't know about all you guys, but I am worried about the starting rotation after Verlander and Cole.
I would think they are VERY far apart. If you are Dallas, if you take any number below the qualifying offer you are admitting failure. If you are Houston, anything close to the qualifying offer puts you so close to the tax threshold that your options come trade deadline time are slim and none if wanting to acquire an impact player. Now Crane could change his mind and tell Luhnow that he can go over the threshold for one year. That tax for one year wouldn’t be bad, but all I’ve heard is that they won’t go over. I would think that LA, Atlanta and Philly would offer more money than Houston in any short or long term deal.
Jim, in his post above about a ST trade, may be on to something.

Stroman should still be available. I don’t know how low Keuchel’s price would have to drop for Luhnow to give up that draft pick, but I bet it’s “pretty damn low.”

I miss Charlie and I wish we had him back right now. Having said that, I think the Astros are smart. I think there’s enough in his medicals that they thought the risk was just too great. At least that is the only way I can make sense of the decision to let him go. The proof will be in the pudding and time will tell. If he’s on the DL have the year it’ll prove to have been a good move by the Astros. If he wins 15 games then……

Agreed. They know more than we do, and I guess it was health concerns, but man I'm gonna miss that guy.
-
The wildest part is that Morton signed a relatively reasonable deal that left many here lamenting that the Astros didn’t match, yet the contract was the largest FA contract doled out in Rays history.

Yeah, I know... I get the sneaky suspicion that the Astros will be shown to have been prudent, prescient, smart and fiscally correct about CFM before his two years are up. My disappointment is a reflection of his past performance and how much I like watching him throw his nasty filth. It was the right move but I just don’t like it for non-logical reasons.

I know what you mean. Over the last two years, I don’t know that I’ve felt prouder for any other Astros player than I have for CFM. Dude had been through a lot in his career and came out the other side on top in game 7 of the WS. He’s a champ on and off the field.

Madbum would be great and being a lefty fits. Stroman would be my choice if I had one. I just love the way the guy plays. Robbie Ray would still be on my list. Aaron Sanchez has been really good to start the year for Toronto but he has had some major injury issues in his past. Arizona would have to eat quite a bit of the money but Zack Greinke would be pretty great.

Not always easy to have certainty, especially with the tandems.. When I went last week, I followed the prior weeks tandem scheduling. Based on that progression, it would have been Whitley's tandem turn, but they used Urquidez in his debut, and pushed the Whitley tandem back a day.
And tonight, Milb has Sneed listed as a starter. Well, he has been used in Tandem with Whitley, but Sneed started last tandem and only went 1.2, so if he is starting tonight, is he still in a tandem with Whitley (they usually alternate starting)? I am going to assume that Whitley and Sneed are no longer in tandem and that Jim is correct that Whitley is going Thursday.
Anyways, you get the point. If they would just keep their gamenotes up to date (they are presently three days behind), it would be easier.

Hint: Yuli made two misplays at third.
Take your time.

I really believe Fisher can play successfully at the MLB level if given a chance. I hope they can include him in a deal for a pitcher.

Altuve hammy and now soreness/fatigue in surgically repaired knee
Correa rib-eye

Kemp
Fisher
Mayfield
May be time to trade for #3 Pitcher and promote Alvarez (have him play first or DH)

Tonight’s lineup has Fisher leading off. Also has Mayfield, Stubbs, White, Kemp and Marisnick. Oh, and the staring pitcher is Corbin Martin. I’ll bet no one, in their wildest imagination, would have ever come up with those players together in a starting lineup against the Cubs for a REGULAR season game.
Gonna be interesting!

Pretty common with knee rehabs in my experience (soccer) --- that the surrounding larger leg muscles (quad, hamstring, gluts, and calves are more likely to get strained) to compensate for a little weakness here and there (and aging does not help the process).
But apologies Lefty, did not mean to insinuate that Altuve has a knee issue (it is the probably the reciprocal reaction to rehabing fatigued leg muscles coming off injury). Pretty normal feedback loop for the inside medical sports groupies.

Holy crap

This is going to (continue to) chew the hell out of their bullpen. They basically have no other way to win right now but to get good starting pitching and squeeze out a few dinks and dunks and maybe a solo homer or two from what's left of their offense. That's save situations and other high leverage innings for their bullpen, night after night. Pressley and Osuna are already feeling the strain...

I would disagree with the last part. Yes not all appearances are created equal but AJ does a great job of spreading out the workload
Osuna 24 games 24⅓ innings
Pressly 22 games 24⅓ innings
Harris 20 games 18 innings
Rondon 20 games 18 innings
James 19 games 27⅔ innings
Devo 18 games 19⅔ innings

I agree Jim. I think ultimately we can weather the storm. It may be frustrating at times. Hell, it may even be ugly at times, but I think we ultimately pull through this because of the depth and quality of the players in this organization. Having said that, the starting pitching will need to be fixed to help weather this storm. Cole needs to tighten up just a little bit. Verlander, Miley and Peacock are fine. Beyond those four, someone is going to have to really step up like Fiers and Peacock did in 2017, or a trade for the starter will have to be made now, not at the deadline.

# 6. According to the legend of Clarence Blethen, the Red Sox rookie pitcher in 1923 thought he looked meaner without his false teeth when he was on the mound. He supposedly didn't think to put them back in his mouth while he batted. That led to Blethen sliding into second base and getting bit in the posterior by his own teeth.
Correa's will be on some future lists no doubt.

Warning, boring massage story ahead... be warned, pull the eject cord on this post in five, four, three, two....
Holy crap, why did Alkie never tell us a story of broken bones with all the rub girls we provided him! That guy was wiry and quick I suppose. So last week I could not sleep because of a muscle spasm in my upper back near the shoulder blade. The muscle knot, about the size of a pea but very pronounced, would push against a nerve when I would lay down to sleep... shooting some major pain down my right arm. The only time the knot would not pinch the nerve was when I was standing up and the only thing I felt was the soreness from the muscle. I tried everything to get rid of the knot, looked at every youtube video from a physical therapist on how to work the muscle spasm into submission. When I got tired of not sleeping, I finally relented and went to my family doctor and begged... errr... asked for painkillers or even a cortisone shot. Doc said only an orthopedist can inject cortisone and he recommended one. I called the doctor to make an appointment and he said he'd see me late June. WTF! I'm in pain now... so shoot me up now... not in late June. He said get in line. Apparently sports-related injuries of this kind are common. Yes, I hurt my shoulder/upper back working out and playing/practicing for a National Tournamet for volleyball in June. What made it worse was the advice the ortho-doc gave me "Hey, there are a ton of great videos on YouTube on how to work that muscle spasm out. You should try looking at some of them." Ugh! Oddly enough, I went back and noticed one titled "Give yourself a massage to work out knots in your back". Okay, you've peaked my interest.
Apparently there are methods to self-massage yourself (back away people, I'm not talking about that... stay with me). There are also tools that physical therapist use including this contraption (https://www.amazon.com/Body-Back-Original-Trigger-Therapy/dp/B07664ZWSP/ref=asc_df_B07664ZWSP/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310135323596&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15917933376125700269&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9028226&hvtargid=pla-563820959015&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=62847861838&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=310135323596&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15917933376125700269&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9028226&hvtargid=pla-563820959015). Straight out of the old English torture chambers looks like... or something used in filthy shades of gray. Any how, I decided why not pay someone to go ahead and give me an upper shoulder/back massage. After looking through where to go and discounting almost all of them, I found a place... at Whole Foods. So off I went. I walk in (no appointment necessary), tell the burly 5'8" Russian bald dude (I think he was Russian, he had an accent) "Massage now, upper right side, back... stat!" So he sat me on a chair, said he charged by increments of 20 minutes, I said fine because I figured he can work out a knot the size of a pea in 20. "Deal" says I and let the massaging begin!
I put my face into the chair head rest leaning forward onto a circular oh-ring shaped cushion. Oh-ring because that is the sound I kept making when he started the deep rub. He stopped several times to gently and kindly tell me to "man up and stop crying!" (not in those precise words, but the meaning was clear). He had some serious massaging to do to get that bugger. I don't know this for a fact but I suspect muscle spasms have a mind of their own and dodge and weave in order to avoid the roaming hands of a professional massuse. He went at the muscle from every angle possible including one very uncomfortable (for me) position from the front of the chair while stepping up a few pegs on the front of the chair legs to get leverage. Now the "oh" yelps were for a very different reason, man croutch is not very complimentary to having to pay for this treatment. I wanted a discount for having to endure this procedure. But he was determined and he went after that knot. And I will admit there were a few times I felt the wind go out of my lungs with the attack mode he used to get that knot to tap out. After twenty minutes he asked if I felt better and I said "Yes" through the tears. I stood up and he had to catch me because I almost went to my knees from the shear trauma of being beat up from the neck to shoulder area. And I paid him.
A day later the knot came back. Damnit! I have to admit the cortisone shot being administered by some shady underground, fight-club, nefarious means was very inviting to me. But I was given muscle relaxers by my own doctor the first time I saw him and within three days, the knot had relented and now after five days it's gone. Or is in hiding for now. I'll always remember my very first massage for possibly all the wrong reasons. I did feel better for a few hours that day, but also felt the need to shower away the shame and tears as well... several times.
What were we talking about again.... I forgot.

Thanks for sharing.
What a crazy situation.

I was just perusing the injury list and it is sobering:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/fantasy/injuries/#team117 (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/fantasy/injuries/#team117)
How injured is Altuve? He hasn't been himself as a player all season even when he wasn't injured. What level of play will he have when he returns?
Springer is listed with a "Grade 2" hamstring pull. I'm not an expert, but when they give it a grade that can't be good. We may not see George until after the ASB. Correa was having great year before he was injured and we will be lucky to see him before the ASB, and more likely in August.
I think every win between now and the ASB will be difficult and precious. It's possible the Astros could be challenged for the division even though that seems unlikely now. If, however, they can win enough until the team gets back to full strength around mid to late August, they will be set for a good playoff run.

Oakland got to 6.5 games back last week. This series is big.
Like you said, every win the Hospital Ship Astros get is precious.
As for the injured, McTaggart Tweeted this last night:
No real movement on any of the Astros injured players:
-- Diaz and Springer both ran and swung the bat today
-- Altuve took ground balls in early work
-- Stassi is in Houston working out
-- Joe Smith threw 20-pitch live BP in WPB
-- McHugh played catch and felt good.

Springer’s is encouraging.

The NBA Finals and baseball in May/June are not the same thing. If it was October then a hammy might not keep you out but during the season there isn't much reason to rush back

Lest we not forget that a busted knee - so busted, in fact, that it underwent surgery the very day after the Astros' postseason elimination - kept Altuve out for a portion of the regular season but not the ALDS/ALCS.

Altuve's knee
Correa's back
McCullers' UCL
I'm sure there were more.

Hinch during his weekly spot on MLB Radio today had some encouraging news about Altuve. He said Jose’s workout yesterday was the best workout he has had since he had knee surgery. He took BP in the cage and then asked to move to the field which they let him do. Hinch said that for the first time Altuve is able to put the proper weight on his right leg when he swings, which he hasn’t been able to do since the surgery. Hence the poor offensive numbers to start the year. He did say Altuve is sore but that “he’s sore in the right places.” They May let him do even more today if he is fine when they get to the park. Don’t expect him back however until sometime AFTER the next home stand. AJ sounded like best case scenario could be a rehab assignment after that home stand.
He also mentioned Springer. Said George is doing fine but they will error on side of caution. They will hold him back and extra game or three for sure rather than cutting it short to get him on the field. He is also taking BP and doing activities.
No real info about Diaz or Stassi.

No news on McHugh or Smith?
Rogers on the 25 man roster demonstrates the non-existent pitching depth in the organization Hinch won't him Rogers in a game that is in doubt and apparently there is no one at AAA that is a better choice.
I am guessing that Luhnow is working overtime trying to find pitchers from other teams that he can bring on board.

Nothing about Correa either. I have no inside info, but I can make an informed inference: the .org is very pissed.

They did ask him about Correa, but AJ didn’t say anything more than what we already know.
They didn’t ask him about McHugh or Smith.
They did ask about Martin and his struggles. AJ’s reply was what you would expect regarding Corbin’s control. He lamented about the fact that Martin doesn’t seem to attack hitters like they want him to. I got no hint of what they plan to do with him based off what AJ said.
One more thing, they asked about Straw and his speed, and it is clear AJ loves him. I have a feeling that if AJ has a say in it, Straw ain’t going anywhere.

Couldn’t they just say “unspecified groin injury?” In the same way we didn’t need to know about Matsui’s anal fissures?

He swung through a pitch in the 3rd or the 6th (not sure which but I think it was the 3rd) from verlander that went straight into his groin. He went to a knee. Not sure how he stayed in to finish the at bat much less take the field afterward. He didn’t come out until the 7th.
I saw the play and I’m not sure if he turned into the pitch or actually fouled it, but it was a direct hit.

I still have sympathy for him, but a little less. He obviously was not wearing a cup. Dumbass.

I wonder if Colin Moran wished he had a cup on his face that one time he fouled the ball off of it.

He did not, but it would not have helped anyway. The ball hit him on the opposite side of his face.

Good to hear, Moran's success after such a severe injury.
Did not realize that Chirinos lost all of 2012 due to a concussion during ST.

FYI, on radio this morning with Bowden and Duquette, Luhnow says Altuve should be back before Springer and Diaz. Like we’ve read/heard elsewhere, looks like rehab assignments could be forthcoming before the end of this homestand.
Update: Luhnow just said on pregame show that Diaz felt something running prior to today’s game. That has probably set him back a little.
Joe Smith is looking at a return just prior to all-star break.

It was a lazy fly ball that the LF lost sight of — let it drop 35 yards away and had to chase it down.

I think the bigger concern is his running from 2nd to 3rd and the way he came up from the slide. None of that looked right.

Hinch was just on radio. Said Altuve is on his way to Cincinnati as we speak. He could be activated tomorrow.
AJ said Springer is going to run the bases in about an hour. If all is good he is probably headed out for rehab assignment. Could see him next week.
McHugh gonna throw one more time in minors.
Stassi going to appear in a few more games as well and.

No, CC wasn’t discussed. Unless they can mend bones with a potion a la Harry Potter to speed up the healing process, I’m guessing we are about 2 weeks away from hearing how close he is.

Yeah. We're only three weeks into what was optimistically expected to be a four to six week process. I wouldn't expect anything now other than "continuing to monitor."

Altuve for Mayfield, right?
I would imagine so. Keeps the most options open, although it pretty much means full-time SS for Bregman (I don't really think Straw is viable there except in short stretches).

Radical thought: Altuve comes back, Tyler White is gone. Mayfield stays because you want to ensure Altuve gets time at DH some times. Although Kemp has been serviceable at second base, I'd like for them to keep Mayfield for short and second for just a little while longer.
Means going ahead and pulling the rip cord on White and Yuli goes back to first for a good stretch.
-

My bet would be Straw. I think Mayfield stays until Diaz is back. If Mayfield goes then you lack good options at 3rd and SS behind the starters. Kemp can do most of what Straw does, just with less speed

Yeah, maybe they've reached the end of the road with White. But I still suspect that Luhnow will try to package him in a trade rather than just give him up for absolutely nothing. Not that he has much leverage.

Don't disagree with this, my thought was a bit radical. But I also agree that you cannot afford to lose Mayfield right now with no Correa and Altuve still working his way to 100%. So your idea that it might be Straw is more possible than White, but I'd like them to go ahead and expose The Shark to waivers. It just may be that he'll make it through and choose to accept the assignment to Round Rock to get his mojo back.... because right now, he doesn't have any.
-
You're all crazy. If Alvarez is doing fine when either Correa or Diaz return (whoever is last) then White will go. Or after both Correa and Diaz return and Alvarez is doing poorly then Alvarez goes down.

I guess it will be Myles Straw, unless they elect to go back to twelve pitchers, then it might be Perez.

Hopefully the last week is an indication that White is starting to go on one of his patented (if infrequent) tears which will serve to increase his trade value.

That would be nice, but I suspect the days of being able to hoodwink another GM with a hot streak and a story are over.
Although this reminds me of one of my all-time favorite trade stories. Some Cubs exec "happened" to be sitting next to George Steinbrenner on a flight or at a dinner or something, and just "happened" to mention the name of some prospect (George Frazier, in my memory, but see below) and how he's lighting things up. Then he clams up and won't talk about him anymore. Before you know it, the Yankees are on the phone with the Cubs trying to put together a trade for Frazier and wind up wildly over-paying, and the Cubs walk away rubbing their hands like Mr. Burns.
Sadly, after checking his transaction history on baseball-reference.com, it seems that George Frazier couldn't possibly have been the player involved (if the story is even true). He was involved in trades involving the Cubs and separate trades involving the Yankees, but never a trade between those two clubs. Has anybody else ever heard this story? Do you remember the player(s) involved?

If you had your money on Perez being sent down collect your winnings.

The Astros don't play more than 6 consecutive games between now and the ASB. Going with 12 pitchers makes some sense.

There is an article on MLB network about Altuve being re-activated. In the article the subject of the video that was posted on here with Altuve legging out the triple was discussed. It was addressed by Jose and AJ and it appeared each was kind of surprised at the way Altuve was running in the video. I guess the medical staff would not have cleared him if he wasn’t 100% healthy, but I will not feel completely comfortable until I see him hitting like the old Jose.

Last 7 Games: BA:.316 | OBP:.480 | SLG:.526 | OPS:1.006 | SO: 5 | BB: 6

He's put together a good week's worth of work. His slugging numbers are up and so is his on-base percentage. But his walks to strikeout ratio remains about the same (his real contrinution is he's either going to walk or strikeout and on occasion he'll get a hit or two but not consistently). So he's going to strikeout at about the same clip as his three month average tells you. On average, he's basically striking out about 20 times per month. He is trending to about 110 to 120 strikeouts for the season. Last season, in 66 games he struck out 49 times. He's played in 50 games this season and has 54 strikeouts. Pretty much tells you he's at best a bench player and never a starter. He just doesn't drive in runs enough to justify a starting job. The occasional good week from him might be overlooked on a team with all the other hitters playing but not on a team that needs production from his position. The team is carrying him for now and that is costing them. Oh, by the way if you look at Yuli's stats, he does much better work than White including his last 7 days where he's been putting up better numbers. He strikes out about half the amount of time as White, so his season average in strikeouts is around 60 or so. Less strikeouts means he puts the ball in play a lot more. He doesn't walk as much as White though, but walks don't generally drive in runs and that is what you want from the 1st baseman/DH type.
-
BTW if you want to see who is really struggling hitting a bseball right now, take a look at Jake Marisnick's stats. It is downright ugly. Mendoza would be gloating about how much better he was than Jake. Face it, Jake is a huge drop-off from George Springer. I mean a Grand Canyon drop in production. Pitchers appreciate his defense, but during this stretch the pitching has had little margin for error. A two run lead by the opposition seems like a 10 run deficit sometimes. Plus you have pitchers trying to do too much to keep the other team at bay and wind up making mistakes in the strikezone. A lot of homeruns by the opposition lately and that is entirely trying to do too much to challenge the other team's hitters because you cannot afford to pitch corners with the lack of production from your own team.

Weird take. Springer and Marisnik has played in the same outfield a ton this season before Springer got hurt. I don't think any Astro is expecting Marisnik to replace Springer.
The lack of offensive output from the guys that are supposed to be good hitters and are sucking hind tit (or are sitting on the IL not producing at all) are much more the culprit than Marisnik falling off.

Jake is not a starter, he is a late inning replacement. Because of the injuries, he's now asked to play more and that is exposing his lack of production. Makes others have to do more in this lineup. So basically, yeah, he's not producing as a starter because he's basically not a starter and never will be. So yes, others being injured means he gets to play and that means he's producing well below Mendoza. I would rather see Straw play more than Jake for that matter. Straw is the bench player, Marisnick the starter. Should be the other way around.

Not at all. Never said that. I said he's deep in the mire and doesn't belong in the starting lineup. Take a look at his stats and if you're going to say White doesn't belong in the starting lineup, you have to say that also applies to Marisnick. And Garret Stubbs. But right now, you have to use bench players like Marisnick to start and that is not what they bring to the club. They are bench players. Period. It's asking a lot of a good defensive late inning replacement to be a starter and produce. Marisnick is basically showing you that it is.
Nothing in what I'm saying is that I hate Marisnick. Or even White for that matter. It is what it is and I can't make either of them starters just by myopically deciding I "like" or "dislike" either one. It's about how they fit on the team not about "liking".

Marisnick started lots of games before the injuries. Stubbs is a bench player or maybe on his way back to AAA.
-

Yes, Stubbs has not impressed so far. It would be okay if he were a better defensive catcher but his ability as a receiver has some holes that he will need to continue to work on. As far as Marisnick being a spot starter, fine, but his stats for the last 30 days are woeful so I would think they would want *more* from a full-time starter. I get it, it's only part-time until Springer gets back and then you have Reddick, Alvarez, Brantley, and Springer *ahead* of Marisnick for the starting outfield rotation. That to me is better and not having Marisnick in his current position as a full-time starter. He serves the team better as a late inning defensive replacement and pinch runner. That is his value-add to the team.
None of that is me hating on Jake. In fact, it's about telling him he does have value... just not in his current role. He can't consistently hit a major league thrown baseball as he's proving right now.

I wrote Stubbs/meant Straw.

I wrote Stubbs/meant Straw.
I like Straw a lot more at the #9, second leadoff role in the lineup than Marisnick right now. IMHO of course. I just think Straw gives the team as much as Marisnick can in his role when others return and then some. I think he's a more patient hitter, makes the pitcher throw him strikes, hits the ball back up the middle a lot and runs the bases as well if not better than Marisnick. Marisnick, on the other hand, can slug better than Straw when he is occasionally spot starting. So it's what you want for a #9 hitter that will dictate who and why you would want to keep one over the other. Plus Kemp started to take some time away from Jake at #9 when everyone was healthy too because of what I think Straw can give you. So apparently there is value in both approaches at the #9, it's just what is your flavor, strawberry or vanilla.
That's not under valuing Marisnick, that just my own humble opinion. But what I do feel strongly about is when a team has to use Marisnick a lot as a starter, they get exactly what he's giving the Astros right now. Which is really woeful production offensively. Oh, and by the way, if Marisnick's knee injury is the reason he's doing badly at hitting the last 90 games he's played, then he needs to come clean to management and say it's injury that is keeping him from producing. He's not doing anyone any favors playing with an injured knee that is making him a hole in the lineup.

Why are we doing this? The club has hung in remarkably well despite disabling injuries to some of their biggest producers. Some guys, Marisnick is one, are being asked to do more than they are expected to do in the original configuration of this club. I get it that losing three of three to Cincy is somewhat alarming but why over-analyze the roster composition now with the injuries. They were due a bad stretch.

As a disclaimer I believe in taking one for the team...But there aint no chili in that Cincy Skyline sludge right? I always thought slump busting meals had to be some form of chili derivatives, ie...Frito pie and such. Willing to learn if I'm wrong though...

I'm not that worried about getting swept by the Reds. Those of you who haven't been paying attention to the Reds, they've got a nice core nucleus of everyday players. In my view, with Castillo or even deSclafani on the bump, the Reds aren't far off from being a wild card team in the NL Central. Simply put, the Reds are better than you think.
I'm also not going to panic or wail or gnash teeth over the Marisnick/Straw argument. I believe that Marisnick's best spot is as fourth outfielder because of the lack of production. I've been very pleased that the club has done what it's done without Altuve, Springer and Correa.
Calm down.

How in the world do you guys get to "panic" and "worry" when it comes to just an observation about Marisnick. I think some of you have reading and comprehension disorders. Might want to get that checked out.

He looked okay, but he is getting his swing back in order so it is to be expected. Basically, he's going through spring training again. It's going to take time.

There was one telling play where Blummer exclaimed "Heeeee's baaaack!" in terms of being able to play second effectively. It was a pop-up that he immediately screamed everyone off, including White who made an initial move to go after it, but Altuve had those little legs moving so fast as he screamed "I got it". He made a routine play out of it by getting to the spot quickly and camping under the pop fly. No one else dared come near him as he made that play. Altuve then turned and fired a bullet to Bregman as if he were saying "That felt good!".
In short, he looked good out there, no problems.

Oh yeah, his turns on the DPs were excellent... way better than Kemp, about as good as Super Jack's turns. Felt good to see him throwing like that.. legs well planted.

Yep. Wasn't stellar offensively, but when he did hit, it was fun. Most, if not all, of his hits were extra bases, I believe. But defensively, he was rock solid, and made some crucial plays. And he was just a damn good story.
Hold your head high, Jack. You made it.

Springer returns tomorrow. The Astros play 6 in a row then get about as many off days as games until the ASB. Good bet Guduan gets sent down tomorrow rather than Straw?

I agree. And with Super Jack gone, they probably need someone besides Bergman & White who has ever played SS, so Straw stays. We do NOT want to see this version of White at SS.

Given the coming schedule that was too easy.

If then the current updated 25-man roster holds to the ASB what happens after the ASB? The Astros play 14 straight after the ASB. That usually means a 13 man staff. The timing of Correa, Diaz, and Smith's returns will dictate how long White stays on the team. After the 14 straight the Astros have 4 off days over the next 15 days beginning July 25. That many days off usually means a 12 man staff. Depending on those 3 guys' return dates White could be carried to the end of July, if not further.
My guess is that one or more of them will not return until the Astros are 10 or more games (around the home series with the Rangers) through that 14 straight. That would put them in a position for Luhnow to maximize his time to make deals that might include White. I think Smith will be the first back. That will push Straw out leaving Bregman alone to play short. When either Correa or Diaz return then James (considering he has options and the least time in the majors) will be sent down to go with the 12 man staff heading toward all of those off days. The last man's return will then be the force behind White's departure.
IMO the result is that Luhnow and Hinch would have done an amazing job of juggling the lineup through July.

I don't like the injuries, but I think adversity makes them a better team. Less likely to assume they are going to win it all.
But damn, Luhnow is not in a position of strength to get starting/relief pitching right now. So, here's hoping he has some Jedi trading tricks.

The thought of trying to swing a bat with broken ribs makes me want to curl up in the fetal position and cry, except that would hurt too much. It was every bit as debilitating for me as lumbar/disc problems. Way more painful than when I blew out my knee.

Yes watching but maybe not paying strict attention to the commentary. Alvarez seemed to be running OK on Sunday so I thought that he was well but I guess not. This would have been a great game for him to play first It is frustrating to have such talent out due to injury especially when it results in more fizzling Tyler.

Jake Kaplan just tweeted that tonight will likely be the last rehab game for Joe Smith meaning he may return as soon as Thursday or Friday.
Astros will need to make a 25-man and 40-man roster move to make that happen.
The 40-man should be Martin to the 60-day.
As far as the 25-man... they currently have 12 pitchers and are about to play 14 straight days, which usually means 13 pitchers.
It should be either Sneed or Urquidy if they stay at 12 and I guess Myles Straw if they go to 13?
Also have Peacock coming back soon as well. Gonna be interesting to see what they do over the next week with the roster, assuming no trade happens of course.

I thought White's status was on display the other night in the loss to the Angels. Down by a run, you had Chirinos and Straw due to lead off the 9th. If that's not a situation where you'd use White, then he's completely pointless and just taking up a roster spot.

Well, you see, they do kind of have a choice. They have guys with options so they don't HAVE to cut Tyler lose yet and they have at least one more 40-man roster manipulation card left to play so they don't HAVE to do it on that front either.

Because Straw is a rookie, it was the bottom of the 8th, he has played only a handful of games, and he made one huge mistake already. They are not equal players.
and if we did not score, Marisnick was going in on defense. Using Straw to run would have burned two players.
-
They probably thought Marisnick had the better body type to truck Lucroy
Not at all funny.
-
and because they are being stubborn with Alvarez and 1B, there is no backup for Gurriel without White. He has been very good on defense. I think he is on the roster until Diaz returns.
I woNder if it is more than stubbornness. Easy for a big guy to pull a hammy playing 1B and not having the experience to stretch with restraint.
-
Any news on Correa? I saw that the Astros sent him to the spring training facility in Florida. But what is happening? Is he going to go on a rehab assignment? When?

I think I heard Luhnow say on the pregame show Sunday that the tail end of the final homestand in July was a possibility for he and Diaz. If I heard that right, then we are talking about 2 weeks, plus or minus a day or two.

Marisnick didn’t deserve a suspension. MLB gave in to the court of public opinion on this one.
-

Vague, motherfucking rule that has never been enforced as it is explained. The explanation is that the catcher can’t block the plate without the ball. Catcher never had the ball and was in front of the plate, Marisnick chooses an empty lane and the catcher moves into that lane and boom. Marisnick out two games, wtf.

Unfortunate play which looked like Jake delivered the blow. PC decision to suspend.

Jake's appealing, he'll play tonight. I bet it gets knocked down to one game on appeal.
Edit: meant to say he’s available to play tonight, not that he’s in the lineup.

Marisnick should ask Verlander to speak to Manfred on his behalf.

The thing that sells to me that he wasn't planning on bowling over Lucroy is the hardcore flinch the last time he looks up as he's launching forward in to his slide.
That flinch looks to me like "Oh, fuck. What's he doing there?"

Also notice his knee buckles like he is trying to brake, not launch.

That pretty much takes Straw out of shortstop. His future playing time will be in the outfield which is very crowded. When Correa comes back, Straw goes down or Kemp gets traded or DFA'd. Do luhnow/Hinch think that Straw is an adequate replacement for Marisnick now?

Kaplan a few minutes ago:
It sounds like Josh James won’t pitch for at least a day or two. He downplayed yesterday’s velocity dip, chalking it up to general arm soreness after an increase in workload coming out of the All-Star break.

How long did he pitch Friday? High leverage 8th if I remember. Coming back Sunday could be tough if he is not accustomed to being used that frequently.

More than adequate in the OF and at least adequate at SS. Diaz was not go great at SS very early in the year. Much better at the other positions.

1 inning.
He's had 6 appearances since the AS break
July 11, 13, 15, 16, 19 and 21
Mostly 1 inning each, 2 innings on the 13th and ⅔ yesterday. He's had similar stretches this season but it's not unreasonable that fatigue could be the issue

AJ has been committed to giving guys scheduled rest days. I bet he finds ways to work Straw into the lineup, or at least into games as a PR/defensive substitute in the OF. And no, he's not as good a defensive CFer as Marisnick. Note that similar to personal catchers, JVs personal CFer is Jake.
The odd man out seems to more likely be Kemp, but if he isn't traded before the roster crunch then Straw could go down since he has options and TK does not.

Kemp and Straw are very similar players, except for the RH/LH hitting thing.

Except Straw can play short and Kemp apparently can't.
Of course the Astros shortstop is usually stationed out in right field somewhere so maybe it doesn't matter too much.

Why does kemp need to be the odd man out? Send Straw down, since he has options, when Correa returns. keep Kemp on the roster so you don’t lose him. Let Straw spend a month in the minors working at SS and bring him back up when the rosters expand in September.

I imagine Kemp could fill in at SS, and Straw could fill in at 2B. Emergencies only.

Well. I’m gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Speed, power, OF defense (especially the arm) are all differences, with a significant edge to Straw except power where Kemp has the edge.

I said similar, not the same. They are similar players, and both can run. One is better in some things; the other is better in others. They are valuable pieces to the team and are occasional starters.

It seems like a no-brainer to me. The only wild card is if Kemp gets included in a trade which is entirely possible.
Is this the last year that rosters expand in September?

I agree that it’s seems like a no-brainer. I thought this year rosters expand, but each day, it will be limited to 25. I could easily be wrong though.
-
Of course, I was wrong. Research yielded this, starting in 2020, the same year it goes from 25 to 26:
Elimination of 40-man active roster limit in September. From September 1st through the end of the championship season, all Clubs must carry 28 players on the active roster.
I don’t know where I heard the expanded roster idea, with on 25 available each day, but it doesn’t appear to be in the works.

He's currently on the IL and would stay on the IL if he's not ready. He just can't continue to play in the minors for that long while being designated injured.
It's not at all uncommon for a player to aggravate an injury while playing a rehab game and extend their stay on the IL.

I think Carlos may have just one more year to show he can play a full season. His injury history is becoming a threat to his career potential. He is at least at some risk of having to become a Bill Spiers type player. One with superb talent but only able to play part-time because of back issues.
Of course I could be, and hopefully am, wrong.

You don't give up on talent like he has.
Unless someone wants to trade an ace this offseason....
-
You don't give up on talent like he has.
True, but isn't there an inverse relationship b/t his potential value as a player vs the risk that he may be getting significant portion of each years guaranteed money as a resident of the IL.

All depends on what this is, whether it's the same as last season's injury, and whether there's a fix.
All questions that those of us outside the organization know diddley squat about.

I too have had a discectomy. Modern medicine is a wonderful thing. But if his problem is that, as he gets older, his back musculature can't handle the stress of everyday play...

All I know is that I was wrong about Correa. I thought that we had the next A-Rod. Wellsir, he's not even in the same stratosphere with A Rod. Good player? Yes. All Star. If healthy, maybe. Degenerative disc disease, which ultimately led to 2 surgeries by a top neurosurgeon, ended my playing days. Frankly, I am amazed any time I hear of a player in the majors recovering and returning to play the game at the level required to stay in the game. I am not at all optimistic about Correa's career.

When healthy, A-Rod is still a good comp. When you look at the player A-Rod was through 24 and the player Correa is when healthy, he's not that far behind. Health is obviously huge, I hope we're not looking at a Troy Tulowitzki on our hands but it's looking more and more like it

Correa was, for a second, the best player. It's easy to forget with everything that eventually happened but Carlos Correa, not Jose Altuve, would have been the MVP in 2017 if he had not gotten hurt. He was absolutely demolishing baseballs before(was it the wrist? Thumb? Think it was thumb) the injury. And he still has that ability, if we ever see it for a full 162

I do not think the position he plays has anything to do with his injuries. I have experience with herniated discs, if that is what he has. When they get ready to go, they go, and it does not matter what one is doing. That is what Austin’s dean of neurosurgeons told me after my first one anyway.

Good question. Framber has been pitching well in RR, but they may be leery of him. Urquidy if so.
With Reddick struggling, Tucker for Correa? Reddick or Marisnick can be inserted for defense late in winnable games.

Urquidy started for RR last night so the starters timing fits him. Framber went the day before so he'd be well rested too. I'm expecting Straw for Correa.

Not sure the "sell high" days aren't behind us. Personally, I would not attempt to deal him. Let him play, when healthy, and then let him walk when his contract is up. You can still catch lightening- in- a- bottle possibly for a post-season.

Injuries are disappointing, for sure, but I would not try to trade him, especially not now. He is ARod talent when healthy. I’d be patient with him.
-
Sneed and Straw it is. I'd bet Sneed gets sent down (again) for a starter when it's Sanchez's turn in the rotation.

Mayfield?

Mayfield?
Isn’t he a replacement for Diaz?

Wonder if we'll see Mayfield/Straw middle infield to get Altuve a day off.

While I agree with you, it wouldn’t stop me from seeing what I could get for him in the off-season. If some team was willing to give me 2 top prospects, by top I mean a Whitley and Alvarez/Tucker type of duo, I’d have to consider making that deal.

Furthermore, the Astros don't need Correa to be an A-Rod unless they pay him that way.
-
I’m a little disappointed. I was hoping that the Astros would bring Tucker up, stick him at first, put Yuli at third, and put Bregs at ss. (And maybe play a little Tucker in RF as well.) Straw isn’t a shortstop. And the combination of Straw and Altuve is terrible for double plays.
All of this really leads me to question what the Astros think about Tucker. He’s an untouchable prospect. But they won’t bring him up when he is needed.
-
Correa was, for a second, the best player.

I haven't forgotten anything about Correa's '17. I'm just saying the comparison was off. Over an 8 year span Tulo was good for 5+ WAR six times--and four of those were 6+. Correa's peak thus far was his 4.5 in 2017.
ETA: Make that 6.1, as Doyce pointed out. I mistook his WAA for his WAR.

Not sure where you are getting Correa's 2017 WAR being 4.5, Fangraphs has him at 5.2 for 2016 and 2017, Baseball Reference has 6.1 both seasons

With the lineup they're currently fielding, Bregman Mayfield Altuve Yuli is the strongest defensive lineup out of them all. Moving Bregs to SS weakens the Astros considerably at 3rd, and who knows at first.

Not I. There are good reasons to leave Tucker where he is. Mayfield and Straw are fine.
-
With Diaz and Correa out the immediate need is infield bodies. And the further Yuli gets from 1B the worse the infield defense is.
You'll see Tucker soon enough.
-
When we see Tucker again I hope we see a different Tucker than we saw last year. To my eye he seemed passive and tentative at the plate; a sharp contrast with Alvarez' confidant menace. When Tucker stepped into the batter's box he looked like Jeriome Robertson on the mound; as if he would rather be anywhere else.

The Astros are calling up Toro to help with the infield. He's not on the 40 man, so corresponding moves should be interesting.

Can’t they just remove Mayfield from the 25, and if not him from the 40, there are some arms that are options.

How about finally jettisoning Brady Rogers? Why in the world is he on the 40 man roster?

Is there anyone who could conceivably go to the 60-man DL? Not necessarily someone on the 25-man, even.

I count 41 people on the Astros current 40-man (http://m.astros.mlb.com/hou/roster/40-man/) (which does not include McCullers). Is someone else on the 60 day IL that's not reflected on the linked roster? Of course, counting has never been my strong suit.

Maybe but everything I see indicates he stays on the 40-man for the rest of the season. He might be the next man out.

Who did? He has not been in RR that long, but he is hitting .424. He plays 3B, not SS. Does this mean Bregman is going to SS? Is Correa not coming back any time soon? Is Mayfield out? He plays a solid SS but has not hit.
Strange decision.

The noteworthy part is that they're doing it now. Doing it in November is SOP as free agents open space and trades can be made. After he acquitted himself well in the AFL last fall he was on the trajectory to be added this winter anyway.

Hilarious considering his best hitters did nothing. One hit last night between Springer and Chirinos at-bats and the Astros likely win.

Still no word on the corresponding 40 man?

McTaggart: Luhnow said SS Carlos Correa, who was placed on IL Tuesday with lower back stiffness, is still receiving treatment. He hopes he’s playing in a rehab games in the first week of September and activated back with the big-league team for the last three weeks of the season.

Harris gets the 8th, and it is all hands on deck for the 7th. Framber could help this team so much if he would just throw strikes.

His K/BB ratio still was pretty good. I am not too concerned with runs or ERA. Throwing strikes, and letting his defense help is his key.

This perplexes me. I am no doctor, but I have had herniated discs (L3-L5). Incredibly painful. Sciatic nerve pain. I could not function normally with the pain. They show up on CAT scans or an MRI, and I have had two surgeries, which were easy, immediate fixes. The rehab in 2015 was nothing, and I was almost 70.

I have no idea about Carlos. And of course I'm no Doctor but it is possibly not a spinal issue. A strain or sprain of a tendon, ligament, or muscle (but not a tear) seems more likely. Those can cause constant pain and severe muscle spasms and require inactivity and several days time or longer to heal. Then one might do Physical Therapy for a short duration to strengthen any atrophied muscle before one is back to normal.

Getting the bullpen rested and healthy should take priority over going for best record. Ideally they would call up a bunch of AAA arms to eat innings for several weeks and not be too picky about the details... but then there's that damned division race, which won't quite go away. 9 games up with less than a month to play is very nice... except for the small matter of those 4 remaining head to head games with the A's. Hopefully a good outcome in those games will leave the team two weeks for bullpen R&R.
The A's scare the hell out of me right now. Not because they're going to win the division (still only a very slight chance) but because they can still do terrible damage to the Astros without ever catching them or facing them in the playoffs. If the A's can keep the division race alive until almost the end, that means all these tired and less than completely healthy bullpen pitchers will have to keep grinding away instead of getting a break. That would put the team in a bad place entering the postseason.
-

Yeah, me too. You have my sympathy for your situation. Back pack can be unbearable; I could not function. Luckily mine was simple, fixable, and easy. No pain drugs or Aleve required.
I have not read any statement about the cause of Correa’s pain.

Yep, I was really worried about neck damage, a cracked bone or something like that.
Chandler Rome tweet: Josh Reddick: "When me and Mike got there, (Springer) seemed to be very alert. He just kept saying he had a headache. That was a positive sign. He wasn’t dizzy. He didn’t have any memory loss out there. He made sure he answered all the questions right."

The Brewers announcers discussed the confusion caused by the length of the warning track last night (https://www.mlb.com/tv/g567621/vda7895f9-556c-4f12-861e-d3ce0a403704?clickOrigin=Gameday&media_type=video#game=567621,tfs=20190903_234000,game_state=live), as Springer was being attended to.
(1:33:00) The "extra wide" warning track got him there. He thot he was closer to the wall than he actually was.....
For some reason, the warning track is five feet deep rather than the usual three feet. That's why he jumped too soon.
Why is the warning track so deep?

To give the OFers more time before they hit the wall.

Three feet or thee yards? Three feet is just a step and not much of a "warning" for a guy running.

Warning tracks are a lot wider than three feet. The typical track is about 15 feet. The conventional wisdom is giving the outfielder three strides before hitting the wall. Normally, outfielders will familiarize themselves with the track and the wall at every ballpark, usually part of pre-game warmups or bp. I don't know if Springer did that or not, but it's not a park he's used to playing at, so if it's unusually wide, that could be the source of his thinking he was closer than he was.

Snuffy, you appear to be relatively new to baseball. If you want to know the potential consequences of no padded walls and (almost certainly) of no warning tracks, do a little reading about Pete Reiser.

Correction: Listened to it again: they called it a "five-stepper", rather than a "three-stepper" warning track.

Yep, standand call for other OFers, but damn that noise.
Funny (and true): I was pitching a semi-pro game for a Seguin team one weekend. We were on the road, but I do not remember where. The OF had an old-fashioned wood fence 8-10 feet tall, and a guy hit one about a mile off me to LCF. I knew it was gone immediately, and I imagine the fans did too. Not our CFer, though; he took off on a dead run looking up following the ball’s trajectory and intending to catch the ball. Our LFer, who was my teammate at Texas, seemed to be unaware also. He was calling “lotta room, lotta room” until the instant the CF ran into the fence face-first straight on. Thank goodness, he was stunned (and surprised!) but not hurt. Then it was hilarious! Looked like a Roadrunner cartoon. He hit the fence straight on, stuck to it a moment, then slid down to the ground.

I remember a game where the batter hit a towering popup right behind 1B. The first baseman was trying to get under it, and you could tell was having trouble with the sun. Our second baseman kept yelling "back...back...back...back" and the first baseman kept moving back towards the outfield. He was still back peddling when the ball landed about five feet in front of him, at which point our second baseman yelled "too much".

Why? No fence to run into, gradual slope, embarrassment from falling down might injure pride. Twisted ankle? I suppose that is possible. I liked The Hill but really like what the Astros did with CF.
Fences are the issue for hurting OFers.

Not at all harsh. Lots of time before the game and all of BP to learn the wall. Easy to do with a guy and a fungo. All on him.

I remember Berkman falling down trying to make a catch going up the hill. They should have put a flagpole or something on the Hill to make it more challenging.

There was a flagpole on it, and the pole was in play. Richie Sexton hit it with a monster blast and had to settle for a double.

Yea, I remember White Sox fans coming on here whining about the foul pole during the World Series in 05.

Not that I can think of.
You saw Reddick get sketchy on the track on a RF catch against the wall in the first game, like he didn't know where things were.
Obviously they just didn't take enough fungos. Glad Springer should be back soon.
-

Berkman didn't just try to make the catch; he made the catch. And considering Berkman's agility, it was a spectacular play.

They should have tied a rottweiler to the pole. Length of the chain varies.
If the dog gets the ball, it's still in play.
They could have named it Tal.

It used to be standard to 10 feet, but not anymore. It's up to each team. It's kind of like the fence height and distance...it's up to each team.

Normally I hate off-days. But with Springer's injury and the state of the bullpen, a day off seems like just what the Astros need.

Exactly right. Quite a panic reaction because Springer did not know where he was and could not hear his teammates’ assurances. Players have hit walls for generations, and the fields are never at fault. Your point about differing amounts of foul territory is especially good.

Right. I still have nightmares about a denial league play from about 25-30 years ago. I was pitching, and a nemesis (this fuckwad hit me hard in every league we ever played in from little league past high school) hits a forkball that stayed up a ton to RF, where they had a very short fence. The RF, who really was a middle infielder, went back on the ball and thought that he had a shot at it. He flipped over the fence and broke his neck. MIraculously, he wasn't paralyzed, but his denial league and sports undertakings were over for life. I felt so badly because the CF was screaming at him to stop, but he didn't. That was his first (and, ironically, last) game playing right field since early in high school. He was only out there because he volunteered when our right fielder didn't show. As for the hitter, I never threw him another strike in his life. As far as I know, he's about 60 and still toiling in the denial leagues.

I would like to hear Hinch talk about Greinke. One bad pitch cost him 3 runs and the loss, but he gave up several rockets which were caught, and his two out problem is bad.

Watching George in the dugout was very reassuring. He certainly didn't look like someone who had a concussion. He looked like regular George, kidding around with everyone around him. Obviously, this is not a medical diagnosis, but it made me feel better.

The Astros are targeting this weekend in Kansas City for Brad Peacock to throw off the mound for the first time.
Meanwhile, Collin McHugh is still not throwing. "That's a little bit of bad news," A.J. Hinch said. "We would have hoped he was a little further along."
A.J. Hinch said it is possible that Carlos Correa will "factor into" Triple-A Round Rock's playoff series that begins on Friday. Correa is "building endurance" and continuing his baseball activities.
Yuli Gurriel said he ran at 85 percent today. A.J. Hinch hit him some ground balls during pregame warmups. Hinch said Gurriel will repeat that pregame routine tomorrow and the team will “see how he fits” into this series against the A’s
Lance McCullers Jr. is throwing off a mound today for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery. He'll only get about halfway up the slope and will likely throw only fastballs.

They haven't publicly entertained that notion, have they? Based on this rehab protocol from Dr. James Andrews (last page) (https://med.virginia.edu/orthopaedic-surgery/wp-content/uploads/sites/242/2015/11/AndrewsUCLProtocol.pdf) he's on step 0 or 1 (depending on how you count it being halfway up the mound) of a minimum 12 steps before he even starts throwing breaking balls, and another minimum three steps beyond that before starting 15-pitch simulated games. And this probably represents the best case scenario.

That rehab protocol is really cool. Wild that the best-known surgeon in American professional sports just posts stuff like that publicly.
But...if I'm being overly optimistic, let's say he's in week 24 of that plan right now. 6 weeks from now, if the team is still playing, would he not be able to pitch at a game level?

I'm just hoping that he's useful next year.
Me too. Luhnow has a tough task for next year as many of the possible solutions are question marks: current starters who are free agents, a Framber who didn’t advance and a Whitley who also didn’t advance. They’ll need Lance.
Thankfully, we can focus on the positives of the here and now.

The weeks you're referring to are in "Phase I" of the throwing program. He just started Phase II (last page of the PDF). Even if you assume that he progresses through each step every other day without any setbacks, he still won't be ready to throw simulated games until October. And then if he's seeing game action then it'll be in the major league postseason.
He won't pitch in 2019.
