I spent half the game today wondering what the team might have looked like throughout August with White rather than Davis.

Every time Davis came to bat I wondered the same thing as well.
I know Davis was crushing AA, but the jump to the majors seemed unnecessary. The Astros didn't particularly need a third-baseman -- Marwin and Gouriel could have played third while Bregman was at shortstop. And White is a much more versatile player than Davis.

White had 3 homers and 9 rbis in 9 games when they sent him down. Don't know if White is a long term major leaguer, but when he is hot, he is really hot.

Meanwhile it was reported by Heyman, I think, that Moran was to be a part of the Britton deal. That would have been good for him and the Astros. I think he is ready to play in the MLs.

Davis has 3 homers, and one was a very important one. . Dunno RBIs. Neither is a very good fielder at 3B, but I think Davis is better.
Luhnow made it clear they wanted to see what Davis could do.

I think Davis will be a productive hitter in the big leagues, but he is not an every day third baseman. He is a 1B/DH type. I'm sure he can play 1B just fine, though I'd like to see Gurriel keep that nailed down for the next couple of seasons.

Agreed. Gurriel is already very good there. White is much more versatile than Davis. Interesting how Reed has disappeared.

Reed sure failed to impress in two different auditions. He showed virtually zero promise. He and Singleton both fizzled big time.

If Reed would drop 50 pounds, it might make a big difference. Its difficult to compete on par with the best players in the world carrying around an enormous gut and an enormous butt.

In 126 games at AAA this year Reed has 33 HRs and 100 RBIs. He has an .857 OPS. I wouldn't write him off yet although his future may be elsewhere.

I wonder if the Astros would ever consider putting Reed back on the mound. If memory serves he was a pretty dominate pitcher in college. Wasn't he Kentucky's ace?? At any rate, given how valuable left handed pitchers are I think they should at least consider it. I'm not giving up on him at first base yet, but if he comes up again and can't hit major league pitching, I'd trade him or consider the mover back to pitcher.

No names provided but Moran was the headliner. The injury he sustained with the foul tip was apparently one of the medical concerns voiced by Baltimore.

Since August 12 Davis has been the 2nd best hitter on the team.

He had only been at AAA because Moran got called up so he wasn't there very long. For all intents and purposes he was a AA call up.

Sorry. I don't know the rule about how many games are required in AAA before "he was called up from AAA" is accurate.

A rival GM was quoted as saying that Houston's problem at the Aug 31 deadline was that Luhnow thought a package with AJ Reed and Colin Moran as the cornerstones was good enough to land the high-end talent that was available. I take all such quotes with a large grain of salt, but that's what was reported.

Both those guys could end up being great, unfortunately they both suffer from the stigma of not performing at the MLB level last year. In addition Reed started out poorly at Fresno this year before really killing it in the second half (he's hit 22 of his home runs since the beginning of July). If that report is true I understand Luhnow's valuation and the valuation from the other GMs.
