Mets leading 4-1 now after the Cubs catcher is WAY out of position on a play at the plate. If you're watching boys and girls...that is exactly where you DON"T want to be to field a throw.

Kyle Schwarber hits the shit out of a baseball.

What was he thinking?

I'm guessing he just backed up to get a big hop on the throw. Talking heads afterward blamed the rule about blocking the plate, but he could have still been in front of it, and if the throw carries him in the baseline, it's not a violation. Either way, he 1) put the runner between him and the ball and 2) put the plate between him and the runner. Both are no-nos.
Little, fundamental things are so important in the postseason. Leaving a base uncovered...being in bad position to field a throw...every mistake just gets magnified.

Mets just got absolutely, royally fucked on the ground rules for the ivy. Runner was already home when the ball went in.

Shitty for the Mets. Although it was the correct call it just ignores common sense.

@Cubs: Thank you all for your groundskeeping advice.

Wow! Terry Collins has managed a team all the way to the World Series. Good for him, I guess.

Yeah, I'm one of the people that predicted he would flame out in spectacular fashion in the tough NY environment. Wrong again.

Not even aa hip manager like Joe Maddon can win with the FTC. Bwahahahaha!

I am happy for him.
When he was here (has it really been twenty years ago?), he struck me as a wound-too-tight over manager, and kind of a prick, as well. A friend who played for him in California/Anaheim more-or-less confirmed the assessment. But from what I have read and heard, Collins kept learning as he went along, even changed up his style somewhat. He was kind of a surprise hire when the Mets originally brought him on board, as I recall; but he apparently works well with the younger players, and it is hard to argue with the results.
Plus, his team dick-stomped the Cubs. That gets him extra points, in my book.

It seems he's completely reinvented his managing style over the decades. I'm always surprised when I see so many stories about how warm and encouraging he is with the young players, and lets the veterans like David Wright lead on their own terms. A complete 180 from his uptight, general blown gasket attitude when he was here. Growth is a good a thing.

My favorite aspect of that series is that the Cubs don't have one calamitous "unlucky/cursed" event to blame everything on. They simply got soundly and decisively beat. They were barely in any game. Shut up and go home, Cub fans.

And here's an interesting tidbit from Grantland's wrap-up of yesterday's action:
The 8-3 victory ensures that, for the first time in history, the World Series will not involve one of Major League Baseball’s original 16 teams.

Hard to imagine it took so long for that to occur.

That Mets' staff is scary good. Every starter I saw throws 96 or so. I can't help but believe that Houston could put a staff together like that with VV, Feliz, McCullers and Appel around Keuchel of course. Doesn't mean they would be good, just hard throwers.

I never thought I would see anyone as hot as Beltran in the playoffs as an Astro. Murphy was a "who's he?" guy for me, but not any longer.
-
Because of 1986, I despise the mets with the energy of a 1000 white hot suns. Reckon that puts me in the minority against the FTC sentiment.

because of 1969 I kinda like 'em.
I used to like the Cubs, too ... Santo, Banks, Brock, Buhl, Ellsworth. No more.

Root for the Royals:
- They're from our league;
- They're not a divisional rival;
- They're not annoying (except for Cueto);
- They're not Canadian; and
- They're not the Mets.

Hot as he was they just kept pitching to him and he kept hittin 'em out. Amazing run.

somehow appropriate it was on back to the future day

I do too but not worse than the Cubs.

Hating the goddamn Mets and the stupid fucking Cubs doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. You can hold both positions at the same time. Well, I can anyway.

Kessinger and Beckert up the middle. Billy Williams. Fergie Jenkins.
A lot easier to like back then; until Durocher got there, I guess.

For the first time in the history of forever, I will be rooting for an AL team in the WS.

This last point is the most important (for me). As you know, there are two more weeks of the Rugby World Cup and that is more than enough to occupy my attention. In the spare moments when I am drawn into the World Series, however, it will be to watch those goddamn sons of whores, otherwise known as the mets, lose.

At least Beltran had a track record. Homers in 6 straight games? Murphy had 6 HR in April, May, and June.
Combined.

No shit. The guy's 30 years old, yet there will be no shortage of organizations assuming that the last week is the kind of production they can look forward to as opposed to the rest of the guy's six-year big league career. It's been a fine career, and a lot of people seem to think Murphy's versatility makes him a Luhnow/Hinch kind of player. I wouldn't mind him on the Astros, but not for the kind of coin this postseason will likely demand.

Bite your tongue-I loved the Lip. I saw him get run before a game started once.
