Title: stRangers, 8/31/14
Post by: NeilT on August 31, 2014, 02:25:27 pm
I hate to see another day go by with no GameZone.  It's the bottom of the 4th, 1-1, 1 out.

Both games are easy to summarize: great starting pitching and good defense for the good guys, while some scrub for the Rangers is baffling most of the Astros hitters.

And the failure to drive in Altuve twice after doubles.

Singleton, for a good while now, is missing most every hittable pitch about one inch too low.  Would think they could address that.

I don't know if you are watching the Rangers TV broadcast but Grieve pointed out earlier in the game how many hittable pitches Singleton misses. He didn't know if it was just because he swung so hard or what.

Ground Control must have a big green tab next to Singleton's name.

Oh, it's true, but he is not fooled, or late, he's just a little off. Seems like something which could be corrected.

What's the green tab?

Maybe his head is not still enough through the swing. Or he needs vision correction.

Nice day by Altuve.

Nice day by Altuve.

Most days are nice days by Altuve.  I think they said on the radio that this was his 21st three-hit game.

His only out was probably the one he hit best.

This guy Mendez is a perfect example of a pitcher that it seems every team now has 2 or more of: young guys who you've never heard of, who throw 95-97 and have come up to the majors within the last year or so and immediately put up ERAs under 3 or even 2. I can't recall the last time the Astros have been able to find one of those guys; all of their 95+ guys have basically sucked: Rhiner Cruz, Cisnero, Zeid, Clemens ... I must've blocked out the others, but I know there have been others. Even Fields has had serious ups and downs, and Folty, though he's barely been up for a month.

Is this indicative of a problem identifying talent, or developing it, just shitty luck, what?

Dominguez crushes one to tie the game up.

You're just trying to depress us right? Posing rhetorical questions that are just disturbing.

Maybe they're not looking for one-pitch 95+ guys?  Folty Friday was throwing everything well but his 95+ fastball, and it was constantly a ball.

Nice bomb by Dominguez.

Marisnick is a hell of an athlete. Similar to Singleton, he doesn't look like crap at the plate, but the results are crap. Hopefully, time and experience will fix both of them.

I hope so. There's a lot to like about Marisnick.

Busby and Grieve aren't great but are immensely more listenable than Lewin and Grieve were.

I think Marisnick is a world more comfortable than Singleton.

4 4-hit games for Altuve.

I thought catchers weren't allowed to block the plate any more.

The ball was there way ahead of the  runner. That's one of those that is in the grey area.

I don't have a very clear concept of what the new rule actually is.

Now 11 wins in August September gives the Astros 70 wins for the season.

Edited for stupidity

This team is much better than that. Without looking at the schedule I expect 11 wins in September.

8 games against the A's and Angels
6 games against the Mariners
3 against the Rangers
3 against the Indians
3 against the Mets

11-12 certainly doesn't seem out of reach, but I wouldn't call it expected.  The Astros went 15-14 in May and August, 8-17 in July, 12-15 in June and 9-19 in April.

If the team can go 5-4 against the Rangers/Indians/Mets and split the Mariners then they need only go 3-5 against the top teams to get there.

I confess, I'm rooting for those 11 wins because that would make me the winner of the Race for the Lid (http://www.spikesnstars.com/forums/index.php?topic=116608.msg491449#msg491449)
