Title: July fire sale
Post by: Jacksonian on July 04, 2011, 01:41:00 pm
So it's the trading deadline month.  Is it a pretty safe bet that Wade is or will be dangling Pence, Bourn, and Wandy with the expectation of high end return with Kepp expecting a more modest return?

Yeah, I've seen whispers that they have made it known they will listen on Pence and Wandy but it needs to be a big-time return for either. Don't recall reading anything about Bourn. Hopefully that means they just plan to keep him, because let's face it, teams don't give up their best and brightest prospects for a guy with no power. It's just not sexy to the fans (or owners). I feel like nobody would give them equal value.

Kepp isn't a FA until after 2012 (like Bourn and Pence), and is currently rated a Type A, perhaps something to keep in mind as he might not fetch much in a trade either.

Somebody like the Giants, for example, could be a match for Bourn. Huge outfield, currently trotting Torres and Rowand out there, Bourn could make a difference for them, and they're predicated on pitching and defense. I don't know what they have in their lower levels, but there might be something worthwhile there, and they might be willing to pay the price.

Rangers could use a guy like Bourn and have prospects.

What happened to the guy they had last year? Julio Borbon?

The rumor mill had the Natinals looking at Bourn.

I don't understand why you guys want to trade Bourn so bad.

Since Bourn is in league with the devil, let me ask, do we feel lucky?  This might be one reason we picked Springer this year.

I don't want to trade Bourn.  I just think Bourn may be a player other teams want.  I'd hate for him to go.  Can you imagine how bad the team ERA would be without him patrolling CF?

This doesnt look like a team that will turn around in 2-3 years.  If its going to take more regardless, might as well do it right and stock up on prospects

I'm not trading anyone.  I presume Wade is wondering if he can get a quality return for him in trade.

They can send us that dinged-up Austrian-sounding guy in exchange.

I would trade anyone on the team 27 or older provided we get decent prospects for the future.  We are a few years away.  By restocking the farm system we can rebuild faster.

Trade Bourn and Wandy for a right fielder who has only played 1 game as high as AA.

For a bratty kid who seems to embody some of the ugliest traits of athletes? No thanks. Anyway, they need to pull off some 2-for-1 deals where the numbers are in their favor. The rate of attrition for prospects is just too high.

I'll take the maturity issues in exchange for the best prospect in baseball.  You're talking an A-Rod/Griffey level talent, and the Mariners were able to build around that (even if they were both prima donnas).

At this point, I'd prefer 1 for 2 deals that landed higher talent then a plethora of average talent.  They have plenty of average talent.  Even if the risk is higher.

I'm with you on this one. I saw Harper earlier this season in Hagerstown, Maryland, and the kid has amazing power. Imagine what he's going to be like when he "fills out."

Maybe they can swap Bourn for that speedy, leadoff hitting, base-stealing centerfielder type that's an intergral piece of a quality lineup.

Who's 22 and not represented by Boras? Count me in.

Hey, I'd trade Pence instead of Bourn if it would help.  Then you could go with an outfield of J.D., Bourn and Harper in the outfield next year.  Either way, I doubt the Nats would even give it a thought.  The Stros best pitcher and hitter not being able to land a team's best prospect that has 1 game at AA.

I'll take a 28 year old Bourn over a 22 year old "prospect" every day and twice on Sundays.

Would you take a 28 year old Brad Lidge over 23 (or whatever) year old prospect Michael Bourn?

I don't know...can this Brad Lidge fellow play GG centerfield?  Hit leadoff?  Lead the league in stolen bases?

If Bourn gets hurt this week the pitchforks and torches are coming out.

FWIW, I hope Bourn stays an Astro. But they didn't know if he was a GG, leadoff-worthy, SB king when they traded for him. They just hoped he was.

So that means they should trade him now when he's entering his prime?

By playing lots of games against the Astros.

“I don’t see a ton of pitching help out there,” Epstein said. “The few guys who can really make an impact, it would take half your farm system or your whole farm system.

I hope Wandy is included in this mix of "impact" pitching help and that the Astros are shopping him at a high price and expecting a haul if he's moved.  The SAWKS may not be a likely trade partner, but the team is clearly going all out this year w/ the Gonzalez and Crawford moves.  Why not?

The Sox also like to block the Yankees from getting certain players, even if they themselves don't have a huge need for them.

And vice-versa the Yankees.  Wade could have fun pitting them against each other, as long as he don't use Bill Smith's Santana negotiations with the clubs as a model.
