How many strike outs in a row is that for Gattis?
I'm sure this has been answered, but if I buy MLBTV for the last month of the season ($24.99), will I have access to the Astros games (in Austin area)?
Any word on Carter's fielding "ability"? The idea seems to be that he will rotate between LF, 1B, and DH but I see he last played MLB LF in 2010, and... well, maybe his looks are deceiving, but he certainly "looks" like a DH.
And the Brown Hand Center Hands of the Game Award goes to...Hunter Pence.
Sigh.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
If you like gruesome, career ending injuries, turn on the Bosox/Tribe game.
It was ruled E4.
Lopez looks *very* promising.
Thanks for the PBP!
For the longest time, Caminiti was the one "good" autograph I was able to obtain as a kid. My collection was filled with the likes of Dan Schatzader, Bob Cluck (many, many times) and Dave Rohde. I can't even remember where I got Caminiti's autograph -- maybe before a game, or at AstroFest -- but for years it was the highlight of my autograph collection.
I think I've also got on tape somewhere his appearance with Bagwell and Biggio on Roy Firestone's old show that used to come on before SportsCenter, where they talked about his demons. Sad to realize that point wasn't the end of it for him.
The Eusebio cracks me up.
Geary concerns me. And Byrdak. But there's a reason why bullpens are a crap-shoot.
Didn't get to watch last night, but I'm still directing my bile towards an offense who has left the population of Bremond, Texas on base this series.

Gregg Zaun
Colorado, Toronto
Yeah, but no one figured out mine. I'm shocked too. He was/is a fan favorite.

This is fucking awesome. Playstations will have to be added to forbidden off-field activities, like dirt bikes and "treadmills."

This may be even dumber than the "Excessive IM" excuse.
dude, seriously you try and play monkey wrench or who was in my room last night on expert, i swear to god your arm will FALL OFF.

I never said either was a better option. I just said they are an option.
right; so let's take the older, more expensive, less productive option... sound.Quote:
Cincy will be able to score runs. They would still have a pretty good lineup. Some good pitching (especially relief) would probably put them over the top.
cincinnati was 22nd last year in runs scored and now they may move their top run producer... not generally a sound idea.Quote:
My vote is to wait the two years and then snag him.
interesting, so you're suggesting we DON'T get him when he's in his prime, but instead wait for him to get older and pay him a lot more money. brilliant!
if that's the plan, might as well get carlos lee this year.

Worst collapse ever
That was beyond vile.
As a Saints fan, I consider myself a connoisseur of horrible losses? but I can?t think of a New Orleans loss that stacks up to that.
Not the Falcons Hail Mary Game? not the Falcons Phantom Call Game? not The Snap? not the Monday Night crash and burn against the Jets or the Monday Night seppuku against the Raiders or even the Monday Night Jim Jones Kool-Aid Happy Hour against the Cowboys? or the Flipper Anderson Game? not the Ken Stabler Safety Game? or? speaking of snakes? the Redskins Spitting Cobra game? or the Stanford Band Misses the Extra Point Game? or any of a half-dozen testicle-stomping Joe Montana comeback games? or even the burnt offering to the Rams on the last day of the ?83 season?
Only the ?93 chokejob to the Eagles comes close? just because it happened in the playoffs.
Let?s just say that was pretty damned bad?
I can probably think of a worse one. I thought that I had blocked it out of my mind though...damned football game. Any Oiler fan might remember.
Are you talking about this???

Interesting that these are all defensive plays. Were there no offensive hits this season that could be called plays of the year? What about Luke's walk off?

I think prav's point is that anybody can come up with that shit. But Dick sits high up on the Chron masthead and that shouldn't be where gossipy blogspeak comes from.

The whole reason we are having this conversation is because of the idiotic group think that is new york yankee fans/ local media. If they just left A-Rod alone, he would perform better, but instead every time he messes up, they boo or have the worst media in the world write nasty/controversial articles about why A-Rod had an off night. But they don't do that towards Jeter or Posada, etc.
A-Rod could break the homerun record, win another MVP, and if they didn't win the WS, they would demand his head on a silver platter. It's ridiculous. They don't deserve what they receive every year in terms of putting a good baseball team on the field. If I was a player, I wouldn't want to play there. Consider the treatment of Joe Torre. He has 4 WS rings, and has made the postseason for the past decade, yet his head was almost on the chopping block. Give me a break. Your team lost because your bullpen outside of Rivera blows, and your starting pitching was slightly above average at best, George. Not because Joe Torre pushed wrong buttons.
And Derek Jeter is most overrated player in baseball today, and perhaps ever. I agree if he just steps up and tells the fans/press, lay off Rodriguez, it makes the situation much easier/better. Furthermore, it's a joke that he might win AL MVP this year. His numbers do not match up to Morneau or Ortiz.
I'm sick of the whole yankee fan mentality, which is it is our birthright to play/win world series. That attitude, the unbalanced media coverage towards the yankees and steinbrenner's spending is part of what is wrong with baseball.
The yankee fans don't really deserve to have a great player like A-Rod to cheer for with the way they act towards him. And I'd trade/welcome him as an Astro in a heartbeat, and it would be best for A-Rod to leave NY imho.

I was looking at the ratings of the World Series for the last 30 years last night.
In 1988 and prior, one in every 4 Americans watched the World Series. Now, it's closer to one in 10.
Whatever they're doing; it ain't workin'.

Didn't anyone else think this was a strange move? In case you missed hit...Berkman was sent in to pinch hit for Pettitte in the top fo the 7th up 1-0. There were two outs with Scott on 2nd and an open base at first...with Willy waiting in the on deck circle. Berkman was intentionally walked (then pinch run for), which is what I figured would happen, and Willy struck out looking.
I know Garner knew that the chances were so that Berkman would probably be intentionally walked, so why send him up there. Is he so hurt that they don't even want him swinging? And if he isn't hurt then why not save him till later, possibly for a situation where they'd have to pitch to him? I'd almost rather have him be batting with the bases empty in the 8th or 9th and let San Diego make the decision to walk him with nobody on, or give him a chance to juice one outta the park.

or was Sampson the one they sent down to get him back on the roster? He's not on the list of available pitchers for gameday.
So that further complicates the issue: Who starts tomorrow?

The funny thing about the guys that bitch about Astros development is that they don't understand the baseball clock. AT ALL.
The astros don't bring guys up, as a rule, unless they think they are ready to thrive at the big league level. This enables them to bring up more mature players ready to produce. These producing players are then slotted salary wise at low numbers, leaving flexibility. Then, the guys hit their prime around 27 years old and are either non arbitrartion eligible or just getting into it. 6 years from the time they are called up they are then free agents, and the Astros have received the benefit of their most productive years at reasonable pay.
In other words, the astros don't waste time and money by letting a kid learn (i.e. suck) at the big league level if they can help it. This makes on the field sense and it makes dollars and cents sense as well.
But no by all means, lets bring up Patton right now so that when he is coming into his own in 2 or 3 years he's arbitration eligible (and struggles before then) and then a free agent in the peak of his career.
Note- nowhere am I saying that the astros won't bring up a guy young- just they better know he is going to be a stuf ala Oswalt. Even Berkman probably spent a year more in the minors than some other organizations would have let him. He was a star from more or less the get go, and then the astros waited one more year to pay him the big money. Smart thinking.
Not to mention, starting the options clock as well.
Unless you're referring to the rule about five years of major league service, I think your understanding of options isn't quite correct. By definition a player on the 40-man roster but not on the 25-man active roster is considered to be on "optional assignment" and can be moved back and forth between the major-league club and the minors as many times as the club wishes for that year. That counts as one of his option years. However, if a player is placed on the active roster the following season and not the 40-man roster, that doesn't count as an option year. Once a player accrues five years of MLB service the team must get his permission to option him to the minors (assuming he has options left), but that's not the same thing as a ticking clock that never stops. A player can go an entire career and still have options remaining.

WHY HAVEN'T THE ASTROS TRIED ALL THIS YET?!?!?!?
You know who would do it? Sean Casey. That's who.
WHY OH WHY DIDN'T WE GET SEAN CASEY? WHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???
