There is a large group from MLB (estimated 20+) of MLB folks including Manfred currently in town conducting the investigation. They are interviewing current and former players, coaches, and staff including Brandon Backe. Some players have refused to cooperate.

I’m starting to here speculation that Luhnow could be looking at a lifetime ban similar to Coppawhatever his name was with the Braves, if it can be shown he knew about and approved of this tactic.

The bad part about it, is that away is Kendrick’s sweet spot. We had been pitching him up and in most of the series and had done well. Harris’ pitch was a great pitch in a great location, just the wrong hitter to throw it too.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Article this morning said that Kendrick had not hit a homerun on a pitch in that location all year and that he normally pounds it into the ground.

In my layman's opinion:  Urquidy is almost certain to be the second pitcher Hinch uses tonight (unless he brings in a true reliever to finish an inning).

Urquidy will also start clean and be viewed as a multiple inning guy. If Greinke is in trouble and needs an out, then he'll use someone else depending on matchups. And then depending on where they are in the order maybe Hinch brings in someone to do 7-8-9, or maybe 3-4-5, and then sets Urquidy on a path to get the most outs based on matchup as possible.

Talk Zone / Re: Alvarez
« on: October 29, 2019, 01:19:04 pm »
Yordan Alvarez is Back
Some people thought Yordan Alvarez’s bat sprung to life in Game 5. Not true. It happened in a batting practice session Oct. 21, the day before Game 1.

We know Alvarez was getting beat consistently with fastballs in the ALCS. With his back side collapsing, Alvarez went 1-for-22 with 12 strikeouts.

But something happened in batting practice on the eve of the World Series.

(And I witnessed a similar event in the 2016 NLCS with a 1-for-24 Addison Russell. He took BP hitting the ball almost entirely to centerfield to stop hooking pitches–and homered in the next two games.)

Alvarez took two rounds of BP in which he hit everything to the left of centerfield. But the ball was not jumping off his bat. He was hitting lazy flyballs. He looked as bad as he did in the ALCS.

Finally, Astros hitting coach Alex Cintron stepped in and pulled him aside as they both looked at the tablet attached to the batting cage, the one streaming video of BP.

“I’ve stayed quiet for the most part,” Cintron said. “Most hitters only want to listen when they have really hit bottom. I thought he was there. It was time.”

Cintron then showed Alvarez a change to make in his setup. Alvarez had been setting up with a fairly erect stance–with a weak base and his head out over his toes–and his first movement to the baseball caused his back leg to slide behind him before contact.

Cintron showed him how to “sink into” his legs–bending his knees while keeping his hips back and head over his center of gravity. He showed him how he could accentuate this position by “sinking into” his legs and then leaning back in the shoulders to emphasize keeping his weight centered–not forward. Matt Carpenter, Anthony Rizzo and Paul Goldschmidt are among the hitters who use this technique.

Alvarez stepped into the cage and took up Cintron’s suggestions. He immediately looked like a different hitter. He was crushing balls over the home run line in leftfield, one after another. The change was astonishing to see.

When Alvarez was done with his round Cintron came over and gave him a fist bump. Alvarez smiled for the first time in weeks. That’s when he was fixed. That’s why he hit the home run to left-center in Game 5. Fastballs no longer bother him; he's already matched his hit total off of them (two, including a home run) in the World Series as he did in the ALDS and ALCS combined.

I fear for Cole tonight because Big Papi picked him to be better.. and we know that Big Papi is ALWAYS wrong.

Comments from pundits have less than nothing to do with what's going on on the field.    You can be superstitious all you want when you are playing a game.   But to suggest that comments from a pundit have any effect on what happens in a game is pathetically ignorant.

Who is left to pitch?

Rondon and ??

If the Astros hadn’t closed out their 6-4 win against the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth, Hinch was going to turn to Héctor Rondón in the top of the 10th. Aside from Rondón, rookie Bryan Abreu was the lone reliever left in the bullpen. Game 4 starter Zack Greinke was in the dugout and Hinch had reached the point of gauging how Greinke felt physically. Cole, seated to his manager’s left for most of the game, lobbied to pitch but was rebuffed because of the potential Game 7.

“He wasn’t going to let me,” Cole said. “I asked him twice during the game.”

Amid the postgame champagne celebration, Hinch joked with Rondón and Abreu that they just avoided throwing the most pitches they’ve ever thrown in their lives.

The Astros’ reward for finishing the ALCS in six? Gerrit Cole in Game 1 of the World Series

42
It doesn't seem possible but I believe by the end of this series I will hate Brett Gardner even more than I already do.

The home run ball bounced off the giant wall and back on to the field. Yankees leftfielder Brett Gardner picked it up. He saw Houston bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte walking past him toward the pile of Astros gathering at home plate.

“Here,” Gardner said, handing him the ball. “Take this. You guys are a great team. Now go win the World Series. Represent the American League well.”

Said Bracamonte, “It was so classy. And Aaron Judge gave me a hug and said the same thing. I have so much respect for those guys.”

Bracamonte later gave the ball to an MLB authenticator.

I wouldn't pitch Cole on short rest unless we were facing elimination.

Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using Tapatalk

If the Astros can win one of the next two games, I would think Cole gets Sunday on normal rest, if necessary and Johnny Allstaff on Saturday.

We already have precedent on this from the ALDS. Hinch will do everything in his power to win the game in front of him, and pitching Cole on short rest would be a better proposition than leaving it to the bullpen.

In the playoffs not going with Verlander Friday is too much of a headgame.  You play to win the game in front of you. That means Verlander as soon as he's on full rest. Greinke tomorrow, Verlander Friday.

Following that train of thought, it should be Cole Saturday (if necessary) and all hands on deck (including Verlander, Greinke, and probably even Cole) on Sunday (if necessary)

No doubt.  I was thinking as much as anything about the insanity of offering such a deal.  They need multiple pitchers. Not just one. That contract would put them on the hook for so much money over just 4 players I can't imagine how they'd put together much more a team.

That would break my heart.

That would be beyond the pale. They have got to find a way to do better than that. Like switching to the later game in the territories of the two teams. Or putting the late game on an alternate FOX network until the big FOX can pick it up. But since it is already on FOX1 I suppose there isn't an alternate network and it is a college football gameday. This has the possibility of being really fucked up.

They've put them on FX before.

Hopefully if you're on a plane it allows or denies you access to a game depending on if you're flying over a given team's airspace.

Absolutely. The mlb.tv app utilizes the location function and I have to use the ‘in market streaming’ option when flying out of Texas because mlb.tv is blacked out.

If the stream is started it doesn’t check again, so i’m good on the way in tonight with mlb.tv.

Correa not in the lineup again. I wonder if he will be on the playoff roster?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I was told Sunday that the starting lineup we saw in that game was the starting lineup for the ALDS. I was also told that day that Carlos was not hurt. Not sure which statement was conjecture.

I think Correa's defense alone makes the team better. I would be surprised to not see him starting in the ALDS assuming he is even marginally healthy.

Quote
In some of his recent outings, his cutter hasn’t been as sharp and he’s been wild. In these last two, he’s felt like the cutter has been on point. The A’s tagged him for seven singles and a walk on Tuesday in chasing him in the first inning. Their hitters committed to staying inside Miley’s cutter and hitting it the other way.

“I think the other team has a really good approach against me right now and I’m not making the adjustment,” Miley said. “Again I felt like, it’s crazy, I located pitches pretty well for the nine batters I was in there. I got singled to death tonight. But at the same time, I’ve got to make better pitches.”

The cutter revived Miley’s career last season while he was with the Brewers, and his heavy usage of it isn’t likely to change. It lacked in August on the days his fastball command faltered, as the two pitches work in tandem. But he threw 20 of his 28 pitches for strikes on Tuesday, so that wasn’t the issue against the A’s.

“Their approach was pretty incredible,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.

After he was bounced Tuesday night, Miley spent the rest of the game studying video. In his opinion, the A’s hitters’ swings didn’t suggest that he tipped his pitches. If it’s as simple as the opposition figuring out an approach to combat his cutter, he will have to adjust.

I'd venture to say being subject to the luxury tax is a requirement, because the other teams are doing it.

The Astros under Lunhow represent the antithesis of a team that follows any trend. They are trendsetters.

There are draft penalties included in the competitive balance agreement that would probably outweigh any money concerns.

Plus, Lunhow is on record multiple times saying they would not exceed the limit that creates a penalty.

126
I agree as a general principle but think Cole might be the exception given his age and track record. But I would still be pleasantly shocked if they worked out a deal along those lines.

I could see the Astros doing 4 years guaranteed with 3 years of options... but I would still question how they are going to fit another $30MM+ into the payroll and not pay luxury tax.

Reddick had a game plan to go the other way at the start of the season, and did so with great success. That led to a change in how opposing teams shifted against him and the types of pitches he saw.

I don't see that same approach any longer- the last time I can remember it was May.

And if memory serves didn't Cleveland win the first two games?

I think the review thing actually went against them, as what should've been called a strike three swinging against Lindor was called a foul and Girardi didn't review it. Then boom home run.

Right. They scored 5 runs the rest of the way (including a 1-0 shutout) with losses from Miller, Bauer, and Kluber.

The narrative on the TZ during the bad streak was how washed up Yuli is and advance planning on his replacement. Then I learned last night he hit .321 during the road trip. Getting him back to first will be good, and he will be hitting 6th or 7th when the lineup is back to full strength. I think he will be fine, as he showed us last night hitting 6th.

Fisher is not listed anywhere on the RR roster, and I wonder what is up with him. I also wonder how big of a doghouse Correa is in.

Quote
"I'm feeling great, the pain is gone," [Correa] said. "The plan is to be doing rehab games throughout the All-Star break, and I said if the fans vote me in, one of my rehab games is going to be the All-Star Game. The way the fans have been voting for me, I'm motivated."

Quote
“Unfortunately for him, I don’t think it’s that realistic, given the time he’s had off and he hasn’t played a rehab game yet,” Hinch said. “Maybe by then he’s active, but unfortunately with the timing, I don’t see how that’s a possibility.”

Yeah. They had the camera fixed on Straw for quite a while, but it was clear he wasn't going anywhere for the Bregman pitch.

Maybe, but against a really good pitcher, you cannot count on another hit.

I don't disagree.

Other thoughts:

Straw only has one stolen base attempt (CS) since the 3 SB game on June 2. He didn't "look" ready to run last night on the one pitch to Bregman, but I didn't see his setup for Brantley.

Has Alvarez hit a fastball?

I wasn't as sure as you guys were about Bregman scoring, but man, when an opportunity like that presents itself you must attempt to capitalize on it. If the other team makes a miraculous play, you tip your hat to them and go on. The Astros did nothing and got nothing. Hell, they didn't try to get anything. They just said, fuck it.

I think Alvarez on deck had something to do with it.

This is going to (continue to) chew the hell out of their bullpen. They basically have no other way to win right now but to get good starting pitching and squeeze out a few dinks and dunks and maybe a solo homer or two from what's left of their offense. That's save situations and other high leverage innings for their bullpen, night after night. Pressley and Osuna are already feeling the strain...

In 2017 about this time a solid majority of the board agreed Verlander was too old, too expensive, and too much over the hiss to be an acquisition target. That same majority agreed Luhnow should not try to trade for him because he was not worth the prospects it would cost. Look what JV did after coming to Houston. I would not mind seeing if the Astros could revive Madbum, but he would have to give an indication he will stay. Tucker or whoever is too much for a rental who may be a bit of a project.

I cant remember a single person on this board against a JV trade- quite the contrary in fact. I remember lots of folks pissed that Lunhow didn't pull it of at the non-waiver deadline. Also, JV didn't fall off a 4 wheeler and suffer a type II AC sprain.

He didn't pinky-swear to build the wall, either, so why all the fuss?

If the shutdown is not about money, what is it about?

Also, why was this not taken care of during the two years of unified Republican control of government?

Your projection onto Trump supporters about how they should feel is a pointless exercise.

The shutdown is about politics.

256
They should, because it was a symbiotic promise that Trump would build a wall and Mexico would pay for it.

And everyone else does, which is why the government is currently shut down because we won't pay for the wall that Trump promised Mexico would pay for.

Should? Did he pinky swear? Well, then it doesn't count.

The government shutdown is not about money.

257
Lest we forget, there's also the elephant in the room about Mexico paying for it.

Do you think Trump's supporters will care if the wall is built and Mexico doesn't pay for it?

258

One can argue that wearing the MAGA hats in the first place was antagonistic in and of itself.  However, my only comment on the matter was that chanting "Build the Wall!" to a Native American (or even African Americans who may have thrown verbal insults previously) simply shows that the wall is about racism, not security.  A wall, at any time during known history, would not keep out someone born here or someone dragged here in chains.

The accusation that I "stepped in some fake news" is a weak jab at a point I was not making.

You can watch the video(s) and see that it wasn't said by anyone.

259
The symbolism of the wall was laid bare when those MAGA hat-wearing douches chanted “Build the Wall!” at Vietnam veteran Nathan Phillips...who is Native American.  It’s not about immigration, security or even drugs, it’s about white power.

You stepped in some fake news.

260
So many posts about it for someone who doesn't care.

I'll try to be more efficient in my lack of caring in the future.

261
So you are excusing the booing of her, then.

Presumably, therefore, you're ok with Rashida Tlaib calling Trump a "motherfucker"*.

* I'm not.  She needs to show a level of decorum appropriate for her position, and that's far higher than Twitter...or OWA.

No, I am not especially worked up about it. I think that if I had more information about the who and why I might have cause to care more.

Why does it offend you?

262
I did not intend to suggest that the booing of AOC was during her swearing in.  I read it back and see that I did.  Apologies.  It’s been corrected in posts since.  Are you suggesting that it was OK to boo her at any point during yesterday’s proceedings?

I never excused the booing of Amash.  In case you missed it, by comment on that was drowning in sarcasm.

So it was ok for Republicans to boo her?  You seem to be defending that behavior.  To suggest that Republicans were simply crestfallen at her lack of consistency is laughable.

We don't know who booed her or why they did it. While Ocasio-Cortez revels in making herself a victim of 'haters', there are alternative explanations for folks disagreeing with her. She may be crestfallen to learn she's not the first to be booed in that chamber.

263
Because some of the Republicans in the House are classless pricks.

Why do you think she was booed?

Reading your first post, and even the subsequent, one might infer that she was booed during her swearing in. Her tweet might also lead one to think the same. All by design, of course.

You excused the behavior for Amash, at least in part, because it was based on his 'for expressing his own opinion'. There is no distinction for Ocasio-Cortez.

Additionally, Ocasio-Cortez has been very vocal in her skepticism about Pelosi's leadership including protesting in her office in November. Perhaps some folks are unhappy with her ultimate capitulation.

264
When casting her vote for Pelosi as Speaker.

Why do you think she was booed?

265
He was booed by his own side...for expressing his own opinion.

When was Ocasio-Cortez booed?

Not impeaching him, like not locking up bankers after 2008, makes it ok for someone to do it again.  It’s one of the reasons we put people injail(or to death), to show to others thinking about it that it’s not worth it.

It doesn’t matter that Republicans won’t convict; they’ll end up wearing that.  Impeachment in the House will lay bare all Trump’s crimes, which is a goal unto itself.

I would like to debate you on this (or anything else), but as usual, you lob an accusation without establishing the grounds on which it's based.

I mean, you could post a link to a Kaiser Family Foundation study that show that, while teen are still as horny as the cast of "American Pie", teen pregnancy rates are dropping countrywide.  However, they are dropping notably more slowly in the "south central states" which - per the handy graphic - include Texas and Mississippi.  But that wouldn't help your fact-free rebuttal at all.  Neither would posting an article that 83% of Texas schools teach abstinence-only sex education, or one from Mississippi that says it's abstinence-only sex education law has been extended for another 5 years.

I mean, that takes time.  It's why I didn't do it in the original post.

What do you think "abstinence-only" means?

Also, what about the other at least ten assertions you made?

Re: Kavanaugh

A Federal judge has dismissed a Mississippi law that would ban abortions after only 15 weeks with no exceptions for rape and incest*.  This case will now likely be appealed to the Supreme Court, where Kavanaugh, not Kennedy (or Garland) will be the deciding vote.  This is how Roe will die, not with a hammer blow, but by a thousand cuts.

* These exceptions have always been a fig leaf hiding a pile of bullshit.  It is so hard to prove rape, because it's almost always literally a he said/she said as to whether sex was consensual.  It's so hard to prove incest, because the victim is the ward of the attacker, and not able to control her own destiny.  That makes it very hard for the impregnated victims of rape and incest to prove the exception at all, let alone with the 20-week clock ticking.

I would be more sympathetic to anti-abortion crusaders if they worked as hard to duct tape the baby to the father as they do the mother.  By forcing only one party to be responsible, such laws smack of slut-shaming and punishment - of the female only - for the sin** of sex.

** Sex isn't a crime when between consenting adults.  In fact, only 2 of the Ten Commandments are against the law while some are actively protected by the Constitution (Commandments 2 thru 5, to be precise).

I do not like abortions (pro-choicers are just that, pro-choice, not pro-abortion).  States like Mississippi (and Texas) do their best to remove any chance that kids have to learn about safe sex practices and deny them access to contraception.  Kids have sex anyway, and unwanted pregnancies result - the statistics on this are incredibly well developed and undeniable.  If you don't give people what they need to be able to make safe choices, then you morally cannot punish them*** for the consequences.

*** By "them" I mean "her"; "he" gets to walk away.

The amount of ignorance you present as fact makes it hard to draw any distinction between you and Mr. Happy.

Democrats officially flipped another House seat today, bringing the total of flipped seats to 33, with 8 still to be called.  If they run the table, they can get to a flip of 41, but 38 or 39 is the likely total.  That's still a huge tally given the gerrymandering that took place after the Tea Party wave of 2010.

Speaking of which, that "shellacking" handed out to Obama in 2010 was the result of a 6.6% swing to Republicans.  The swing to Democrats in 2018 is 7.1% and growing (because they're still counting mail-in ballots in California...as usual).

6.6% and 7.1% of what?

Beer and Queso / Re: Roger Angell on "Most Important" Vote of His Lifetime

Despite what Trump says, that was a seismic shift; the swing was bigger than the Tea Party wave in 2010 (Democrat’s retained the Senate then, too).

Last night, Democrats:
Flipped the House - knocking off some prominent Republicans
Flipped 7 state governorships - including Walker in Wisconsin and frikkin Kansas
Flipped 333 state legislature seats countrywide

You should probably check your math.

Marwin or Bregman would play SS.  I realize it'd be hard, but you have to resign yourself you're essentially getting less than the pitcher hitting with him in the lineup.

Who would be added to the roster in his place?

Quote
With the game scoreless in the seventh, Biggio pinch hit for Clemens with one out and Brad Ausmus at first base.
Weaver struck Biggio on the left shoulder with a pitch, but plate umpire Doug Eddings called Biggio back, claiming he hadn't made enough of an effort to get away from the pitch, even though Biggio ducked his shoulder.

"He just said, 'Stay here,' " Biggio said. "I guess he's had a lot of balls thrown at him and knows how easy it is to get out of the way of them. You're sitting on a slider and know he's going to throw it, and he starts one behind you and it breaks in the middle of the batter's box."

Biggio and Garner argued the call without success, extending the at-bat. Biggio lofted a fly ball toward right field and pounded his bat into the ground, glancing back at Eddings as he ran to first.

Eddings followed Biggio down the line, and tempers flared. After getting ejected, Biggio had to be restrained by third-base coach Doug Mansolino, and he threw his helmet onto the field as he departed.

I think that McCann is the odd man out.  He's maybe the worst defensively of the three.  And Stassi is the best hitter.

McCann turned in more than a few high quality at bats last post season. Regardless, the pitching staff consensus was that he was the MVP.

There are many impediments to the prosecution of a sensible discussion on gun control, this type of pure obstructionism is one of them.

The bill had not been passed out of the various committees. This was a procedural issue.

Trump has unleashed (literally) the generals, so there is no civilian oversight to temper their enthusiasm for a target with concern for non-targets sitting at the same dinner table.

More of (disgusting) hyperbole. Generals have 'enthusiasm' for killing non-targets that might dine with an actual target. Only a civilian can provide the required oversight to stop these blood thirsty monsters. There is no other explanation.

Of course, one might wonder how the right, particularly the lock her up crowd, ignore far greater transgressions from their tribe.

A subjective decision (by one empowered to make such a decision) to allow those with interim clearance to review classified material is not a transgression.

Mishandling classified information in violation of federal law is a transgression.

Beer and Queso / Re: Roger Angell on "Most Important" Vote of His Lifetime

Kushner has been there since day one, and reads the PDB in lieu of his father-in-law.  He has had to “revise” his security application multiple times and is still making revisions more than a year later.  He has been denied a permanent clearance because, amongst other things, he and his wife are tens of millions of dollars in debt to foreign entities.  This is exactly the sort of thing that a security check is meant to uncover, because substantial debt (foreign or not) leaves you wide open to being leveraged.

Kushner will never get a permanent clearance.  Unless Congress acts, he will continue to be security risk every day.

You have again equated a lack of final adjudication with a denial. The two are not the same. A failure to list items on your SF-86 will delay final adjudication, but will not by itself disqualify anyone from receiving a security clearance. However, as I mentioned in the previous post, receiving an interim does indicate that someone is considered generally 'low risk'.

Also, there is nothing that says Kushner receives the PDB 'in lieu' of Trump. This is also hyperbole. Or more like fake news.

341
Beer and Queso / Re: Roger Angell on "Most Important" Vote of His Lifetime
« on: February 18, 2018, 02:23:21 pm »
Everyone starts with an interim clearance for those whose positions required same.  In the past, those who failed to get permanent clearance were asked to leave that post.  Not so in the Trump administration.

This is poor management but not illegal if the President is aware and allows the situation to continue.  However, it’s craven when the Trump campaign was based substantially on the possibility that the opposing candidate had be lax in handling of classified communications.

You are equating 'non permanent clearance' with 'denied clearance'. This is not the same thing.

Everyone starts with an investigation. Some that are considered 'low risk' receive an interim clearance (this is what the article is referring to as non-permanent). Everyone receives final adjudication for their permanent clearance. I have colleagues that are approaching two years of waiting for final adjudication.

You take a misunderstanding of the terms and process and draw a conclusion that Trump is therefore craven in his disregard for mishandling classified material. This is hyperbole that muddies the waters of the discussion.

One hundred and thirty.  Including 30 whose positions report directly to the President and 34 who joined the administration on its first day.  10 of the 24 seats on the National Security Council are occupied by people without a permanent clearance.

Sarah Sanders, too, is without a permanent clearance, so it will be interesting to see how she dodges a direct question about her personal security clearance, or lack thereof.  No way to demur on that one.

What is the difference between a permanent and non-permanent security clearance?

Maybe they ought to be required to make an effort to find out? Or ask some agency whether the potential buyer is fit? Maybe the potential buyer should have to supply a certificate of fitness?

The seller should contact the buyer's doctor(s)? A state agency should keep a searchable database of the mentally ill? Who would issue these certificates and what would be the criteria?

Beer and Queso / Re: Guns

WTF?

Why does requiring a responsible gun owner to register his/her guns smack to totalitarianism?  That is the sort of purely hyperbolic nonsense that muddies the debate and makes it an all-or-nothing test.

If the gun lobby is going to put this carnage all on the backs of the mentally ill, then the logical progression is that we have to know who has what guns so that, when someone goes off the reservation, we know where to go and what to collect from them.  Responsible gun owners should not have the merest peep of an issue with this because they're...you know...responsible.  If you advocate against sensible gun regulations, then you are - by definition - not being responsible.

You cast the half baked idea that a gun registry is the logical progression from placing blame on the mentally ill as 'sensible' and those who would oppose it as 'not being responsible'. I think this is the definition of "purely hyperbolic nonsense that muddies the debate".

To me, one thing that has gotten overlooked is Bregman's home run off Jansen in the 9th inning of Game 4.  It gave him a frame of reference for his game-winning AB against Jansen in Game 5.  Maybe not as important as Marwin's HR in Game 2, but would the Astros have won Game 5 without Bregman's seemingly meaningless (at the time) home run in Game 4?

Not be inAppropriate, but based on what was written about Bregman in the ALDS series I knew that homerun wasn't nothing when it happened. For that reason, I had complete confidence in Bregman in game 5.

So Fiers isn't just out of options, he's a free agent.  Then I don't see him at spring training unless he's unsigned going in.  I don't see that either.

This is his second year of arbitration.

It seems to me that one of Giles' problems is that his FB doesn't have any movement: it's straight as an arrow. Five years ago there weren't many 100mph guys around, batters weren't used to it, and you could maybe get away with that. Now batters see 98-100mph a *lot*, and they're going to time if it's straight. And if he can't keep the FB on the edges, batters don't have to worry about the slider. And that's when the fastballs go for long rides.

If his fastball had movement he still wouldn't know what to do with it.

In Game 5 Fisher pinch ran for McCann, which means you lose your starting catcher, with your backup catcher already in the game at DH. Plus the score was tied, which means if you don't score you lose your catcher and possibly your DH.  There were two outs. You wait until he's in scoring position. That made perfect sense. But last night Gattis hit for the pitcher with nobody out, and was coming out the game after that half inning anyway.  He was on with one out and you were trailing by a run. Just thought if Gattis was coming out anyway, why not pinch run as soon as he reached when a double tied the game and Springer and Bregman due up.

Why not pinch run for Reddick when he reaches on the lead off walk? Serious question.

Section 11.7 of the MLB postseason manual states the Commissioner or a designated representative shall determine whether a ballpark's retractable roof shall remain open or closed before and during any postseason game.

Quote
The Astros' policy is to close the roof if there's a threat of rain, a threat of excessive wind (above 30 mph), a heat index of about 88 degrees for a night game or if the temperature is below 65 degrees. It takes two to three hours to cool the ballpark once the roof is closed, which plays into the decision.

If GC was interested in upgrading LF, they could have had Upton for what appears to be very little in return, and likely very little long term risk.

What would be Grayson Long's comp in the Astros organization?

Whoa! No. He's not going to trade Martes, Tucker, AND Whitley. I hope. Fisher? Sure. some combination, maybe. Not all.

What is a main purpose of a deep and talented minor league system? Are we going to win the WS with Kuechel, McCullers and pick two of Morton, McHugh, and Fiers plus the bullpen we have after roster adjustments?

Standing there arguing over the ground rules with a smirk on your face is a colossal waste of time.

Bregman lost his balance after a swing and interfered with the throw down on Springer. Altuve promptly knocks the shit out of the next pitch. Tied 1-1.

Gattis to the DL with sore right wrist. Centeno recalled.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Gattis sustained the injury after taking a ball off the wrist during the team’s series in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels last weekend. Gattis tried playing through the pain, but it was ultimately enough of a hindrance to warrant a trip to the sideline.

Who is saying this?

ABC national fake news had a whole segment on it. cleverly posed as a question, of course.
