If the Astros can win one of the next two games, I would think Cole gets Sunday on normal rest, if necessary and Johnny Allstaff on Saturday.
In the playoffs not going with Verlander Friday is too much of a headgame. You play to win the game in front of you. That means Verlander as soon as he's on full rest. Greinke tomorrow, Verlander Friday.

No doubt. I was thinking as much as anything about the insanity of offering such a deal. They need multiple pitchers. Not just one. That contract would put them on the hook for so much money over just 4 players I can't imagine how they'd put together much more a team.
That would be beyond the pale. They have got to find a way to do better than that. Like switching to the later game in the territories of the two teams. Or putting the late game on an alternate FOX network until the big FOX can pick it up. But since it is already on FOX1 I suppose there isn't an alternate network and it is a college football gameday. This has the possibility of being really fucked up.
Hopefully if you're on a plane it allows or denies you access to a game depending on if you're flying over a given team's airspace.

In some of his recent outings, his cutter hasn’t been as sharp and he’s been wild. In these last two, he’s felt like the cutter has been on point. The A’s tagged him for seven singles and a walk on Tuesday in chasing him in the first inning. Their hitters committed to staying inside Miley’s cutter and hitting it the other way.
“I think the other team has a really good approach against me right now and I’m not making the adjustment,” Miley said. “Again I felt like, it’s crazy, I located pitches pretty well for the nine batters I was in there. I got singled to death tonight. But at the same time, I’ve got to make better pitches.”
The cutter revived Miley’s career last season while he was with the Brewers, and his heavy usage of it isn’t likely to change. It lacked in August on the days his fastball command faltered, as the two pitches work in tandem. But he threw 20 of his 28 pitches for strikes on Tuesday, so that wasn’t the issue against the A’s.
“Their approach was pretty incredible,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.
After he was bounced Tuesday night, Miley spent the rest of the game studying video. In his opinion, the A’s hitters’ swings didn’t suggest that he tipped his pitches. If it’s as simple as the opposition figuring out an approach to combat his cutter, he will have to adjust.
I'd venture to say being subject to the luxury tax is a requirement, because the other teams are doing it.
I agree as a general principle but think Cole might be the exception given his age and track record. But I would still be pleasantly shocked if they worked out a deal along those lines.

Watching George in the dugout was very reassuring. He certainly didn't look like someone who had a concussion. He looked like regular George, kidding around with everyone around him. Obviously, this is not a medical diagnosis, but it made me feel better.

Thanks to American Airlines, my wife and I got to rent a car and drive home from DFW last night. She kept reading me the play-by-play from the MLB app on her phone, and when we started out Urquidy was already in the 3rd inning, and I was thanking the BBGs. And then he kept going, and as he kept knocking off successive innings, I couldn't believe our good fortune. Just a tremendous outing for him and a much-needed shot in the arm for the team.
Well, you may be fat but I don't believe all fat guys are created equal. That is nuts. Some are slobs and others are just, big boned.
I'm not saying it's going to happen. I'm going to leave this name here: Jeff Samardzija Astros scouts are everywhere, and his spin rate is right up there with Verlander and Cole.
And when did baseball people start getting in-season vacations?
This is a knock-on effect of the 4 and 5 situation. Even the otherwise reliable relievers are shakier now because of overuse. At this rate, the bullpen is going to be shot by mid-September, even if they can land another starter.

The narrative on the TZ during the bad streak was how washed up Yuli is and advance planning on his replacement. Then I learned last night he hit .321 during the road trip. Getting him back to first will be good, and he will be hitting 6th or 7th when the lineup is back to full strength. I think he will be fine, as he showed us last night hitting 6th.
Fisher is not listed anywhere on the RR roster, and I wonder what is up with him. I also wonder how big of a doghouse Correa is in.

I wasn't as sure as you guys were about Bregman scoring, but man, when an opportunity like that presents itself you must attempt to capitalize on it. If the other team makes a miraculous play, you tip your hat to them and go on. The Astros did nothing and got nothing. Hell, they didn't try to get anything. They just said, fuck it.

This is going to (continue to) chew the hell out of their bullpen. They basically have no other way to win right now but to get good starting pitching and squeeze out a few dinks and dunks and maybe a solo homer or two from what's left of their offense. That's save situations and other high leverage innings for their bullpen, night after night. Pressley and Osuna are already feeling the strain...
I would argue that Dany won it and was the last to occupy it. The next king was king of a different thing.

In 2017 about this time a solid majority of the board agreed Verlander was too old, too expensive, and too much over the hiss to be an acquisition target. That same majority agreed Luhnow should not try to trade for him because he was not worth the prospects it would cost. Look what JV did after coming to Houston. I would not mind seeing if the Astros could revive Madbum, but he would have to give an indication he will stay. Tucker or whoever is too much for a rental who may be a bit of a project.
Brantley seems like the type of dude who doesn’t do much other than play baseball, and he’s very happy with that.

I would like to debate you on this (or anything else), but as usual, you lob an accusation without establishing the grounds on which it's based.
I mean, you could post a link to a Kaiser Family Foundation study that show that, while teen are still as horny as the cast of "American Pie", teen pregnancy rates are dropping countrywide. However, they are dropping notably more slowly in the "south central states" which - per the handy graphic - include Texas and Mississippi. But that wouldn't help your fact-free rebuttal at all. Neither would posting an article that 83% of Texas schools teach abstinence-only sex education, or one from Mississippi that says it's abstinence-only sex education law has been extended for another 5 years.

A Federal judge has dismissed a Mississippi law that would ban abortions after only 15 weeks with no exceptions for rape and incest*. This case will now likely be appealed to the Supreme Court, where Kavanaugh, not Kennedy (or Garland) will be the deciding vote. This is how Roe will die, not with a hammer blow, but by a thousand cuts.
* These exceptions have always been a fig leaf hiding a pile of bullshit. It is so hard to prove rape, because it's almost always literally a he said/she said as to whether sex was consensual. It's so hard to prove incest, because the victim is the ward of the attacker, and not able to control her own destiny. That makes it very hard for the impregnated victims of rape and incest to prove the exception at all, let alone with the 20-week clock ticking.
I would be more sympathetic to anti-abortion crusaders if they worked as hard to duct tape the baby to the father as they do the mother. By forcing only one party to be responsible, such laws smack of slut-shaming and punishment - of the female only - for the sin** of sex.
** Sex isn't a crime when between consenting adults. In fact, only 2 of the Ten Commandments are against the law while some are actively protected by the Constitution (Commandments 2 thru 5, to be precise).
I do not like abortions (pro-choicers are just that, pro-choice, not pro-abortion). States like Mississippi (and Texas) do their best to remove any chance that kids have to learn about safe sex practices and deny them access to contraception. Kids have sex anyway, and unwanted pregnancies result - the statistics on this are incredibly well developed and undeniable. If you don't give people what they need to be able to make safe choices, then you morally cannot punish them*** for the consequences.

Speaking of which, that "shellacking" handed out to Obama in 2010 was the result of a 6.6% swing to Republicans. The swing to Democrats in 2018 is 7.1% and growing (because they're still counting mail-in ballots in California...as usual).
Despite what Trump says, that was a seismic shift; the swing was bigger than the Tea Party wave in 2010 (Democrat’s retained the Senate then, too).

With the game scoreless in the seventh, Biggio pinch hit for Clemens with one out and Brad Ausmus at first base.
Weaver struck Biggio on the left shoulder with a pitch, but plate umpire Doug Eddings called Biggio back, claiming he hadn't made enough of an effort to get away from the pitch, even though Biggio ducked his shoulder.

Given that you know (or should, if you are interested) people who CANNOT get security clearances were continually allowed access to top secret material, you might as well scream from the top of your lungs that you have no intellectual honesty.

It seems to me that one of Giles' problems is that his FB doesn't have any movement: it's straight as an arrow. Five years ago there weren't many 100mph guys around, batters weren't used to it, and you could maybe get away with that. Now batters see 98-100mph a *lot*, and they're going to time if it's straight. And if he can't keep the FB on the edges, batters don't have to worry about the slider. And that's when the fastballs go for long rides.

In Game 5 Fisher pinch ran for McCann, which means you lose your starting catcher, with your backup catcher already in the game at DH. Plus the score was tied, which means if you don't score you lose your catcher and possibly your DH. There were two outs. You wait until he's in scoring position. That made perfect sense. But last night Gattis hit for the pitcher with nobody out, and was coming out the game after that half inning anyway. He was on with one out and you were trailing by a run. Just thought if Gattis was coming out anyway, why not pinch run as soon as he reached when a double tied the game and Springer and Bregman due up.
Although I hate the Dodgers, their fans, that bsdtard Lasorda and the players I remember from the 80s, I was having a hard time working up a real hated for this particular set of players. I'd like to thank Joc Pederson for stepping up and filling that void.

Section 11.7 of the MLB postseason manual states the Commissioner or a designated representative shall determine whether a ballpark's retractable roof shall remain open or closed before and during any postseason game.
The Astros' policy is to close the roof if there's a threat of rain, a threat of excessive wind (above 30 mph), a heat index of about 88 degrees for a night game or if the temperature is below 65 degrees. It takes two to three hours to cool the ballpark once the roof is closed, which plays into the decision.
