I had three wide receivers go nutso, two TDs apiece, plus lots of yards. On any other day, if you'd told me that Lamar Jackson was going to pick up 40+ points for my opponent, I would have said "well, that's an L". I've had a very lucky season: when my opponent has had a good day, my team has had a good day, too, and for the most part when my team has had a lousy day, my opponent has had a down day, too.

Just win.... that is all it is about.

Jomboy’s credibility takes a hit with each video he posts.

Nah, he is getting paid by the views.  He isn't a journalist he is an entrepreneur.  He is making hay while the sun shines.  He had the chance to be a pitching ninja type account but now he is just following the clicks.  Interesting that the Pitching Ninja has made very little of the whole controversy or if he has, I haven't seen it.   He is sticking to showing pitchers with nasty stuff making hitters look silly.

That is a bargain. Seems like he could have got more in arbitration. Happy to have him on the team.

Here is the upside for Yuli in the contract:

Quote
Yuli Gurriel’s five-year, $47.5MM contract with the Astros affords him the opportunity to opt into MLB’s arbitration system once eligible. But he’ll forgo that right and play out the 2020 season on the original $8.3MM salary dictated by the contract, tweets USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

Although Gurriel will have only four-plus years of service time when his contract expires at the conclusion of the 2020 season — as opposed to the six years typically required to become a free agent — he’ll nevertheless head to the open market next winter. Gurriel’s contract stipulates that he be released by the Astros upon completion of the deal at the end of the 2020 season, thus allowing him an opportunity to once again test free agency.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / MILB Contraction
« on: November 18, 2019, 06:09:59 am »
MLB owners have a approved a proposal to get rid of 42 MILB teams.

The leagues most impacted are as follows:

NY Penn - 9 out of 14 teams
Appy - 9 out of 10 teams (the lone survivor is Pulaski where the Yankee's invested significant $$ recently)
Pioneer - full league of 8 teams
Sally - three teams
Mid West - three teams (Including the River Bandits)
North West - 2 teams out of 8 (lone surviving non complex short season league)
Florida St - two teams
Eastern - two teams
Southern two teams
Carolina - one team
California - one team (Lancaster)

Not saying some changes need to be made but this looks pretty drastic.

Thanks. I am a bit surprised at Pens being #3 and Lee cracking the top 10. Javier should be higher IMO.

They covered the reasons for that in the chat which is open to the unwashed folk.
Quote
Jim (Georgetown): There are going to be guys in the Top 101 with pretty similar AA stats, at basically the same age, as Cristian Javier. I know nothing about scouting. What keeps him from joining their ranks?

Houston Astros Top 10 Chat: So I think there's two ways to approach this. On the one hand the line between backend 101 arm and Javier isn't that big in some ways. A little less size, a little less fastball, you have to squint a little harder to find average command. But that stuff adds up, and projecting all of those bumps (and yeah, he's not getting any taller) takes us past the bounds of our 75th percentile OFP. The K numbers are nice but they imply better stuff than is there at present, and an above-average curve will always rack up Ks in Double-A. It's nice to have in the majors too, but the stuff around that limits the upside some for Javier compared to oh say Tarik Skubal or Edward Cabrera.

Also, my guess is the heavy Astros’ slant in the headline and piece is mostly Drellich’s doing.  I believe Rosenthal came on a radio show and made it clear that in his estimation this is a widespread problem across MLB.

I disagree.  Reporters don't write headlines.  That is someone else's job.  Yes, Drellich has done hatchet jobs in the past.  I believe Fiers reached out to him because of the history with him.  This isn't a hatchet job.

The heavy Astros slant is because even though "everyone is doing it" we have a person on the record saying here is what the Astros are doing.  The fact that the allegations were then backed up by video just has fueled the flames.  The only thing that is going to reduce the heat is for 4-5 other teams' methods to be exposed.  Otherwise - it is pile on the Astros for now.

The latest from  Score:

some details of how the scheme operated.

Trevor Plouffe, a nine-year veteran who last played in 2018, explained that the Astros used a live feed to capture the opposing catcher's signals to the pitcher, then used technology to relay that information to the bullpen catcher, who would then indicate whether the pitch was a fastball or offspeed by putting his hands up on the fence or keeping them down. Plouffe's information came courtesy of big-league pitcher Carson Smith as well as an unnamed source.

True. If the Astros did anything wrong in this area in 2017, Beltran and Cora were in the big middle of it.

I was out of pocket yesterday when the but this above was my first thought.  Beltran was the hero in the dugout who is the expert at picking up pitchers tipping their pitches.  Who was doing the same thing in NY.  Cora was the coach credited with all the improvement in the batter's approach at the plate.  There is no way they were not aware of this happening.

This morning, the Athletic's 'the lead' podcast had Rosenthal on it to talk about it and he was did a good job of pointing out that this was bigger than an Astros issue and that the investigation will likely have the effect of pointing out other teams.  He pointed out that when the Red Sox were punished the yankees also received a fine for improper use of a dugout phone the prior season.

I agree that Bama should not be in the mix and hopefully my Auburn Tigers will help make that case in the Iron Bowl. I am hoping we can beat one of Georgia and Alabama to finish a crazy hard schedule 9-3.  If we can beat both and end up 10-2, I will be on cloud 9.  8-4 will not surprise or disappoint me.

The operative word is almost. I thought that we outplayed them and outcoached them and should have beaten them by two touchdowns. We certainly would have had the game been in Tiger Stadium, but we were in the bowels of Bryant-Denny.

LSU has had two games that ended up being closer than they should have been (Auburn and Alabama).  That habit might come back to bite them if they don't solve the problem.

It was the hitter's inability to knock in runs early that lost the game.

Harris made a good pitch.  Kendrick put a good swing on it.  Tip your cap and move on.

One thing that has stood out to me this year is the number of former Astros minor league pitchers starting for other teams.  People talk about the fact that few of the Astros pitchers are home grown.  They can develop pitchers.  Just look around the league.  But they are GREAT at assessing pitchers.  They have been able to flip future potential for current excellence.

It will be interesting to see if Elias learned that skill as he rebuilds the O's.

Re: Summer leagues - Sponsors cover some of the team related cost.  Players often live with host families and sometimes have part time jobs as well (though that is becoming more rare).

The leagues have recruiters/scouts who reach out to college coaches or vise versa.  Sometimes coaches want a younger player to get more innings/at bats and finds a lower tier league for him to play in.

Yup. Baseball is not “standardized”

That’s why we like it.

Fields have differing amounts of foul territory, different ground rules, umps have different strike zones, baseballs have different seams,  Coach has different levels of WFW to use.  It's what makes baseball great.

As a recovering addict, I agree wholeheartedly with Coach. I no longer buy all the crap about addiction being a disease; big pharma has co-opted medicine. Addiction is a choice, a very reckless choice. I tell people who are suffering in active addiction that they are free to pick their own bottom. Of course, the lowest bottom is overdose/death.

People can come back with the lame reply that they can't help using, but I counter with pick your own bottom. I then tell them that my bottom was a week in the suicide cage of a very cold parish jail. I tell them about a couple of friends who weren't so lucky. But it all goes back to a fundamental choice.

Working in foster care for almost 30 years, I have seen a lot of pain caused by drugs, alcohol, gambling, and many other things that folks are addicted to that don't get the attention of the biggies.  I have heard all the explanations and for me it is a combination of all of them mixed in different elements for each person.  Family dynamics, past trauma, biology, addictive personality, and choices all play a big role.  That what makes it so hard to treat and why no one treatment works well for everyone.

Is it a medical issue?  Yes all types of addiction are related to neuro chemical release.
Is it a choice issue?  Absolutely,
Can past trauma make it worse?  You betcha
Can family dynamics impact it?  Sometimes

The bottom line what makes addiction so baffling is that it is personal.  No treatment program has 100% effectiveness.  When you hear addiction tx folks talk, they talk about relapse being a part of recovery.  Beating addiction is hard.  So proud of the folks who beat it.  I try to have grace for those who are fighting the battle.  That is when I am not pissed off at them for the pain and destruction their life is impacting on others.

Also based on the fact that many of those addicted to opiates started with prescription drugs that were controlled by both the FDA and the CDC, and that I have seen folks on methadone for years with no planned step down because clinics make money off of repeat customers, I am highly skeptical of any government program being successful in our economic environment.  Greed is addiction too.

This is an unspeakable tragedy and an unimaginable loss.  There are no words.

While I can't get my mind around that loss, our family understands a small part of it.  Our daughter and her husband are attending a retreat this weekend for couples that are grieving the loss of a child.  It is led by a couple that has been walking thru that loss and sharing their journey.

Lydia - our daughter's 1st born - had seizures on her 8th day, brain surgery b/f her 2nd BD, and almost lived 10 years w/o walking or talking.  She was fed through a tube.  Friends would show up to bring food, wash dishes, do laundry, etc., and then leave.  Lydia died in 2010.  They have five children and are getting help to do the grief work.

I can't fathom the loss of a child, a spouse, and a parent (in law) at the same time - especially at the hands of a loved one.

So sorry for your families loss.

Between calling out MLB about baseball and now this.  Verlander has decided he isn't going to just go along with the norm and he is willing to pay the price.  I think he probably cost himself some Cy Young votes and maybe some 1st ballot HOF votes with this event but that just confirms the immaturity of the BBWA .  They want him to treat them well regardless of treatment but they won't return the favor.

But comparing Chick-fil-A to Popeye’s is kind of like comparing Steely Dan to Funkadelic. Inherently problematic.

Concept and culinary wise, Georgia-founded Chick-fil-A exudes, for a fast-food franchise, a streamlined, sophisticated vibe softened with “my pleasure”-punctuated customer-service. Popeye’s is endearingly funky. Everything about it. The food, the look, the service. A natural, given Popeye’s Louisiana origins and Louisiana-influenced menu.

Interesting story!  It's a comeback for speedster Anthony Gose, this time as a pitcher finally using his 100 mph fastball.  This 2017 article tells the story about Gose telling teams not to try to make him a pitcher for almost a decade b/f making the transition.

He is barely an "ex-Astro".  Gose was on the Round Rock roster briefly twice -  as a hitter during 2010 as part of the  Roy Oswalt trade to the Phillies (he was then flipped to Toronto for Brett Wallace) and during 2018 when he was claimed on waivers as a LHP b/f being returned to the Rangers.  (The 1st link provides his transaction history.)

A few points:

He wasn't claimed on waivers in 2018. He was drafted by the Astros in the rule 5 draft in 2017 and early in spring training he was placed on waivers by the Astros.

Gose was only an Astro for part of one spring training.  He made one very bad outing and was sent back to the Rangers per rule 5 draft rules. He was never on the 25 man roster or Astro minor league regular season roster of any kind. His Baseball reference minor league stats confirm this.   Being flipped to the Blue Jays on the same day meant he wasn't on a roster for those few seconds or minutes between the transactions.

Just a reminder for us all -  This thread is primarily for Ex Astros - guys who played regular season/post season games for the Astros.  For guys who were in the minors, there is a separate thread in the bus ride for Ex Bus Riders News 2019.  With as closely as we have all followed the minors during the rebuilding years, we get them confused sometimes.

He doesn't have it yet but he has the potential for it.  Right now he can play 1st, 3rd, & 2nd.  IMO he has the tools to learn OF.  They drafted him with plans to turn him into a catcher but that experiment didn't work (his receiving had a long way to go but his bat was ready to move up levels - arm was good though).  He is going to have to show flexibility to get to the show with Houston with the current players that have in the IF.

In the early '90s, Reynolds had done well enough in Class AA to be invited to player winter ball in Venezuela. At the time, Reynolds recalled, only Class AAA pitchers or fresh big leaguers were typically invited.

The straight shooter Strom was coaching down there.

"He watched me throw a couple games and then he asked me a question one day when I was throwing a bullpen," Reynolds said. "He goes, 'You want to play one year in the big leagues or 10 in the minors?' He goes, 'Let's do this.' He completely changed me. He helped me with the two-seamer, the sinker and a small controlled curveball and taught me the split-finger. That in a nutshell is the only way I got to the big leagues and had a fairly successful career. It was him. … I love Brent Strom."

Jordan Lyles traded to the Brewers.  It seems like this guy has been around for ever but he is still just 28 years old.  He performed well for the Brewers last year after the trade deadline.  Hoping to catch the magic again.

The started it last year.

Yes, they started working on it some last year and he did play one game (4 innings) at SS last year in AAA.  So he probably also worked on it in the off season, but he only had 25 total games at SS in AAA before he started playing in MLB.  He was still learning the position when he was put at SS in the Majors.

He might have known how to doggie paddle but he was still thrown in the deep end.

When I saw White in Greeneville after he was drafted, I didn't see a MLB player.  I thought he was a a roster filler only.  He has made the most of his opportunity.

Regarding Kemp, I think with Correa not eligible to come off the 60 day until later this week, it gives them more time to work out a trade that will involve Kemp so they don't have to DFA him.  That is best case scenario IMO.

He has had a good month:

Quote
Brett Phillips last 38 games:
- .313/.429/.643
- 3 doubles
- 7 triples
- 7 HRs
- 29 strikeouts/23 walks

Considering what he was hitting his first 39 games (.165/.331/.306), this is a great turnaround.

The thing that sells to me that he wasn't planning on bowling over Lucroy is the hardcore flinch the last time he looks up as he's launching forward in to his slide.

That flinch looks to me like "Oh, fuck. What's he doing there?"

Also notice his knee buckles like he is trying to brake, not launch.

Phillips personality had made him more well known (the viral laughing videos) but Hader's ceiling was higher.  That being said, Phillips slide has surprised me.  Still young only 25 and bat and glove was way ahead of his bat. He hit less than 200 in April & May.  Hit .292 in June.

I would say 4th or 5th OF type is his best bet at this time.  I would be surprised if he makes it to being an every day player.

J D Martinez's former agent has filed a law suit against Martinez's financial adviser and Merrill Lynch (who the adviser used to work for) for "intentional interference with his contract" $Athletic$

Quote
According to the complaint, as the 2017 season drew to a close, Boras tried to lure Martinez to his agency. Lee got wind of this (presumably from Martinez) and became curious. Lee hadn’t heard of Boras (clearly he wasn’t a baseball fan), but a few Google searches later, he understood that Boras regularly negotiates huge deals for his clients. And that, says Garber, is when Lee decided to double-cross his friend and hitch his star to Boras. The motive? If he steered Martinez to Boras, Boras would thank him by introducing his clients to Lee for financial and wealth services. A win-win for everyone, except for Garber.

According to Garber, Lee started telling Martinez that Garber was washed up and would sell Martinez short in his upcoming contract negotiations. Lee told Martinez to fire Garber and go with Boras. And that’s exactly what Martinez did.

i watched a lot of kids who had been good college players come to rookie ball and struggle.  The pitching depth and line up depth are very different.  Also the daily grind makes a difference. College teams play 50-60 games in 4 months.  Short season teams play 66 games in 2 1/2 months.

If college was close to AA ball, you would see high round draft picks start at AA. Most start in short season ball with a few guys skipping to Low A.  Every now and then you might start one at high A but I can't remember any kid starting at AA after the draft.

You will hear college TV guys talk about an arm that could be drafted and make an impact in the playoffs.  But the reality is that would be a very rare and odd occurrence.  Here is a 2015 article about players who have been called up the same year they were drafted.    Many of those still played in the minors, they just made the majors the same year they were drafted.  Many were Sept. call ups.  The number also went down after they no longer allowed draft picks to have major league contracts.

Yes, my son and I were also questioning several of the coaches decisions.  I thought he was managing too tight/playing not to lose rather than playing to win.  For example, I would have left Fitts in after the double instead of going to burns.  Still had a 3 run lead and Fitts had been getting outs.  Didn't know what you were going to get from Burns.

His day went from awesome to awful in just a few innings.  Hit a absolute two run bomb off one of the best pitchers in college ball and then tack on another run with a RBI single.  Then botch a tailor made double play ball by going to second instead of first after touching 3rd and throwing it into right field.  Then the overthrow on what should have been the final out. Poor kid.

Let me add one more element of this.  I think the high school sports structure also impacts this.  One son's peers was a great soccer defender and a good quarterback.  He quit soccer after his freshman year because it was the "wrong" type of off season exercise.  He was trying to bulk up and all the running of soccer was not helping him do that.  The kid signed to play QB at Army so the choice worked out for him but American Football is king in most high school in America.  I think this is changing some with concussion information but that will take a few decades to show up in the USMNT.

Let's also not discount the power of winning the world cup on home turf.  That has made soccer the desirable sport for girls to play.  I know it was among my kid's peers.  It was either Soccer or Basketball.  Other sports were what you did in the off season.

UConn completed their rout of Nebraska and will rest up for their game with Oklahoma State later. It will be an elimination game for the Huskies.

Dallas Baptist are feasting on crappy Gator pitching and are still in the top of the fourth now with a 9-2 lead.

Elsewhere: West Virginia leads Texas A&M 7-1 in the top of the 7th in an elimination game for both teams.

UCLA leads Baylor 6-4 in the top of the 5th. TCU leads Central Connecticut State 4-3 in the top of the 4th

So the Walk Off Grand Slam by A&M might have outdone the 3 run bomb by Auburn.

This is turning into a great tournament, as good as March madness with the upsets.  Gotta love the Campbell Fighting Camels and the Quinnepiac Bobcats facing off in the winners bracket while NC State is eliminated and #1 seed East Carolina has to come out of the losers bracket and beat the winner twice.

And a two out, three run walk off bomb by the kid who made a big error earlier in the game and last year had a ball pop out of his glove to give FLA a walk off in the super regional is better than any three pointer at the buzzer.

The problem with White & Kemp's trade values is that they don't bring huge value to contenders but have more value for teams who are in the lower third of the W/L column.  Those teams are less likely to give up prospects because they are usually rebuilding.  I anticipate any trade to include several low level prospects who may not be on top 20 list but have high ceilings.  With the Astros continuing to draft later, these kind of trades can help populate the depth of the farm system.

I have two solid sources who have said that Ivey has been suspended for an undisclosed number of games. I am going to go out on a short limb and assume that the suspension is related to an incident in his April 12th start in Amarillo in which he was removed from the game after a foreign substance was found on his glove. In any event, Ivey was not in Corpus Christi during my time there from Friday through Sunday and has not pitched since April 23rd. I reached out to the Astros for comment, but have been unable to obtain any further information at this time. I am, however, confident in my sources. Boras, get ready for it,  says that teams using all the data available are all coming to the same conclusion about the value of a given player.   He argues that this is often a false value (read: way less than what he asks for in a multiyear contract).

The quotes from Boras are limited but exhausting to read.

He says false value but I read it as  - since everyone has the same data, he can't create competition by providing selective info to different clubs based on their biases.  He is like scouts who fought analytics and are now whining about not having a job.  He is playing catch.

Let's play good news/bad news from last night:

Tucker -
Good news - Hit a home run
Bad News - K'd 2 times

Straw -
Good news - 1 for 4 with an RBI and is hitting .309 for the year
Bad News - made his 2nd error at short stop (maybe not really that bad his early fielding percentage is .947)

Offense -
Good news - scored 2 runs with only 6 base runners (5H, 1 BB). Showed pop with a HR (Tucker) and a 2B (Ferguson)
Bad news - K'd 14 times and only had 6 base runners.

Pitchers (Martin/Perez/Guduan)
Good news - Combined to allow 8 hits, no runs, 1 BB and 9 Ks to shut out New Orleans.  Martin also picked off 2 runners at 1st.  (also got 2 double plays turned behind them)
Bad news - everyone allowed a hit???? Really I got nothing.

I’d forgotten this, but they’ve finally started using MLB balls at AAA this season. And early returns show the ball—by design or not, no need to rehash that here—is flying farther and faster than ever. Expect some AAA hitters and pitchers to put up career high home run totals.

Of course, because it’s the MLB ball now, I guess those “inflated” AAA numbers should be ever-so-slightly more indicative of that we can expect when guys reach the bigs.

I thought PCL was already a hitters league.  This makes it more so.

Saw a video on line, that I can't find now of someone showing that he wasn't hiding his glove well with Correa at second and White batting.  Correa could see in the glove and looked right for fast ball and looked left for off speed.  It was interesting.

Very good read from John Sickles (Athletic $$). This was a loaded class.

Astros Highlights:
Quote
13) Carlos Correa, SS, Astros: In A-ball at the time the list was written but another young star, .277/.355/.476 in 2078 plate appearances, 15.7 fWAR....
15) George Springer, OF, Astros: Also a success, .266/.356/.469 in 2843 at-bats, 18.7 fWAR....
28) Jonathan Singleton, 1B, Astros: Biggest bust on the list so far, .171/.290/.331 in 420 at-bats, -0.9 fWAR; released.....
48) Lance McCullers, Jr, RHP, Astros: Another “very successful when healthy” case, 29-22, 3.67 in 454 innings, 9.8 fWAR....
51) Mark Appel, RHP, Astros: Never made the majors; one of the biggest busts in prospect history; an interesting case study that bears more detailed analysis in a full article....

Also included Astros farm hands Folty and VV.

And the missed free throw that would have ensured that the worst outcome was OT.

Oh yeah, there were several things the team could have executed earlier in the game to win the game.  I appreciated Pearl saying "Get over it" about the calls.

This run and the way things have been handled has rehabbed Pearls image a good bit.

On a side note, my daughter is in vet school at Auburn. Pearl and his wife are part owners of a doggie hotel in Auburn called the Grove Bark Inn.  He was scheduled to speak today at the Vet Business Management Club.  Friday, they club got an email that said, if we play on Monday, he will need to reschedule.  Since they didn't play on Monday, he was back in town and kept the appointment.  My daughter said they had a great turn out (175 to 200  vet students) and that he did a great job.

Bruce Pearl has always seemed a bit shady but no doubt he an inspire great play from his athletes.

I lived in TN during his UT years.  What he did there wasn't that bad until he lied about it.  There will always be a slimy element to him and at times, he is his own worse enemy. But he is a great marketer and motivator.  This most recent run, I have seen great coaching as well.  In fact, it was a gear I wasn't sure he had.  I hope he can avoid self sabotage and enjoy his stay at Auburn.

This place is interesting. As an out of towner I was thrilled to find a really smart Astros baseball community.
Until I had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with good ole Jim R - the proverbial internet tough guy.

JR decides who has the right to speak her. He demands credentials. He needs posts to be appropriately worded.
He doesn't need anyone else to contribute. He is MR CONTRIBUTOR.

I had this crazy ass notion that being the fan of the same team made it OK for 'outsiders' to post here.

But no, good ole JR just wants to play a colossal game of dick out deciding who gets to talk Astros baseball and who doesn't.

So when I mention at 10pm at night that I saw Verlander was in final stages of contract negotiation, and I look at the headlines and don't see it
mentioned, I figured what the hell, no one could possibly find fault with me sharing that insight.

Wrong.

Good ole JR decided that he had to attack even that innocuous post. Personally.

You guys have a helluva website. And I know you are a tight knit community, so leaving this here isn't going to make any friends.

But it truly sucks that one tired, bitter old man can spew his shit with immunity.

Good Ole JR, kiss my internet loving As-tros. goodnight.

Do you think your special?  Anyone who would have posted that without looking in the other threads would have gotten the same response from Jim or any of a number of posters.  It has happened to me and many others.  Welcome to the club.

Do you really think the treatment was harsh?  That is the culture of this place.  Your post is not the culture of this place.  Read more & post less and you will figure it out.

I knocked Duke out against Mississippi.  I hate them.

Ole Miss is a team that could do it.  They beat Auburn twice this year.  Both times, everything they threw up went in.  One time, they hit 4 threes with 2 or less on the shot clock.  But then they go and lose to a bad Alabama team in the SEC tourney.  They are all over the place.

Here's the list of changes from MLB.com. In addition to the ones I mentioned above:
  • 2020: Aside from extra innings or blowouts, certain designated two-way players will be eligible to bat and pitch:
    • "A player can only qualify for this designation if he accrues at least 20 Major League innings pitched and at least 20 Major League games started as a position player or designated hitter (with at least three plate appearances in each of those games) in either the current or the prior season."
)[/li]
[/list]

So how does one obtain this designation if it requires you doing it in the previous year which you can't do with out the designation?

My first thought is the Angels might have to rush Ohtani back to the mound to qualify him as a two-way guy for 2020 unless MLB makes an exception.

I understand the players are upset about the discontinuation of crazy 10 year deals but the CBA hasn't been all bad for them.
in 2011, average MLB salary was 3.095 million.  Last year, that number was 4.52 million.  That is 46% increase.

At the same time, arbitration numbers have go up significantly.  In 2011, there were only 2 players who had arbitration numbers greater than 7.5 million.  This year, there were 24 who had more than 7.5 million.  In fact, there were 13 who got more than 10 million.

The system is shifting.  Young players are getting their money sooner.  That means players who were expecting the big payday at free agency right now are caught in the transition.  It may not be fair but it is what happens to people in other lines of work every day in places all over this country. Things change and someone gets screwed.  That is what my father in law would call life.

the flat ground/flat bat app is going to create new opportunities for players who don't have the money to go to showcases, don't have the money to join elite travel teams, don't live in the right part of the country to get exposure or who want to play more than one sport.  10-15 years down the road when we have a more diverse American talent base in baseball, I think his work will get a great deal of credit.

I am staring to think winning these hearings is less important to Luhnow than following his plan. Part of the plan is determining what the players are worth budgetwise and offering only that amount. The club will consider a reasonable compromise to a number within the plan and go to a hearing if the player is not interested in the compromise number. The club puts on its best case in a businesslike professional manner without getting personal or denigrating the player’s efforts or contributions to the organization, and if the arbitrator rules for the player, so be it. Luhnow stuck to the plan without emotion or rancor, and the club did not piss off the player. Going to a hearing is merely a business decision based on an impersonal evaluation of monetary value, and win or lose, the decision is not a personal attack on the player or his accomplishments and contributions to the team and its season.

All of this stuff exists only in my head, of course, but I starting thinking this might be Luhnow’s approach when Correa complimented management on its professionalism after his hearing.

As a fan, it is difficult, dare i say almost impossible, to separate emotion from decisions like this.  I am glad Front Office types can do it.  I get the feeling Luhnow is pretty good at balancing the relational and the business.  With the exception of Bud Norris, I haven't heard much bad talk about the Astros dealings with players.

I just found one of my score books from scoring my son's games.  One was his first varsity start from his freshman year. My wife scored since I was at a conference.  My son took the book from me, pointed to a double in the first and said, "That was my first curve ball in my career.  It didn't break."  He handed the book back to me with a smile.

He had been taught the curve ball in the bullpen warming up for the game.  Fun memories.

The Tampa Bay Times reported last week Linares, 41, had emerged as the leading candidate for the job. He also fills the Rays' need for a Spanish speaker on the coaching staff in what will be his first major-league assignment after 22 years with the Astros.

"I was speechless, it took me a little while to gather my thoughts after I  was told. It was such a blessing," Linares said Wednesday. "I immediately started crying and I called my dad right away. It was just a special moment. You work your whole life to get to the big leagues and now this opportunity arises. It's an amazing feeling."

Pretty impressive to finish first in one league and second in the other for the season.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Re: 2018 Rule 5 Draft
« on: August 22, 2018, 02:50:26 pm »
Possible but not very likely. Astros players lost in minor league phase of Rule 5 draft:

2017--0
2016--0
2015--0
2014--1 (Ariel Ovando)
2013--1 (Enderson Franco)
2012--0
2011--0

Convenient sample size:

2010- 1 (Jeiler Castillo)
2009- 1 (Nicholas Moresi)
2008 - 1 (Jonathon Ash)
2007 - 5 (Santo Luis, Levi Romero, Victor Garate, Patrick Sellers, Julio Puentes)
2006- 0

So over the last 12 years 1/2 the time the Astros lose at least one player in the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft.  With the large number of eligible guys at A ball & High A, I will repeat there may be claimed in the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft depending on if they are protected at the AAA or AA levels.  Time will tell.

None of these guys really made much of a splash.  They were all roster fillers.  Garate made it up for a cup of coffee with the nationals.  He appeared in 4 games late in 2009.  He had a 22.50 ERA in 2 IP.

Thanks for pulling the eligible list together, that takes a great deal of work.

I did some press box work for the G-Stros that year.  One night after a really bad loss, Rodney said "I can't build a house when they give me termite infested wood".  Pretty much summed up the 2007 G-Stros.

Currently .249/.305/.491 on the season.

Based on the roster the last few games of the Astros/Mariner series and last nights M's game, it appears the the Astros AAA team might be a contender in the AL West.

How much can he earn during the rest of the season?

Major League minimum is 545,000. With 55 games left in the season (counting last nights game), he will earn just over 185,000 for the rest of the year if he stays with the big league club.  That is American Dollars.  I don't do canadian currency exchange rates.

Not a fan of this at all.  If what I’ve heard about the incident is true, things probably get worse down the road.  Just seems really unnecessary to ad a distraction like this to the team.  I’m all for 2nd chances, but beating up harming women is a lot different than DUI, drugs, theft, etc...  you got some real issues if you are getting violent with a woman.  Issues that probably mean you need a year or so off and getting real counseling/help.

Hopefully Osuna comes in, says the right things and more importantly does the right things.  Donating a bunch of his time to local DV charities would be a good start.

Yeah, I don't buy your distinctions.  Ask the person whose loved one was killed by some one driving under the influence if they agree with your distinction here.  Domestic violence is serious, serious business and should be handled as such.  But don't put it on a higher threshold than other crimes that also injure people.

Actually a player-friendly move by the organization.  Hauschild was going nowhere ever with Houston, but is probably worth a look as an inning-eating swing man for a second-division club at the MLB level.  I will be surprised if he stays unsigned for long, and not surprised at all to see him back in MLB before the end of the season.  I don't see him with a long career, though.

For a 33rd round Sr sign in 2012, his career has exceeded all expectations. Best of luck to him moving forward.

I really like the move. Luhnow got a good, established catcher, which is a position of concern if another injury occurred, in exchange for currency, i.e., a prospect and some international pool money. Very safe and prudent move.

I also like the move.  The Astros catching group is below league average in caught stealing  (League 28%, Astros 26%).  The Angels are #2 at 45% and we just took the guy who has fewer stolen bases against in 77 games (15) than Stassi  does in 57 games (24) and McCann does in 50 games (16).  He has the potential to keep a tying or winning run at 1st late in a game where McCann &/or Stassi would not.

The same reason a player is added to the roster for the post season to be a pinch runner is why this is a very good trade.

You do see some crazy ending in HS baseball. My son's freshman year, with one out and a runner at 1st in a tie game, the batter swings and misses at a ball in the dirt.  The runner was going and the batter took off on the ball in the dirt.  The catcher popped up and threw that ball over the 1st baseman's head into a vast area of foul territory down the RF line.  The runner at first scored on the error and they won on a walk off throwing error where the batter was already out because 1st was occupied.

I expect will will see a lot of releases early in the year as the drafted players come on board.  With them contracting a short season team last year, they had too many players in extended spring.  Some players were being held until they knew who they drafted and that the roster needs would be.

Vote for who I thought was having the best year at each position. I want an all star team not a  most popular team.

240
Expect a lot of releases over the next few weeks.  As Jayne points out:

Quote
I'm currently showing 254 players in the Astros system. Since the Astros eliminated one of the Dominican Summer League teams and the Greeneville team, there will be approximately 25 more players than there are roster spots once the three short season teams start play in June (even after backing out those currently listed on the DL). And that doesn't count the approximately 35 players that the Astros will likely sign in the 2018 draft. So, there will probably be quite a few more releases to come over the next month to make room for the new draft picks.

She then goes on to list the most recent transactions and puts the known signing bonus with the signing/acquiring info for that player.  Some big time international bonus kids have recently been released.

Beer and Queso / New Tommy John Procedure?
« on: May 26, 2018, 07:41:40 pm »
A kid my son played ball with in TN had his UCL torn during football season.  They used a new procedure to repair it.  Here is how the local paper described it:

Quote
The Dr. Andrews’ group developed a procedure where McLain’s ligament was adhered back together with a collagen-coated fiber tape and a few sutures. The tape is ultra strong and allows for a much quicker recovery time, typically five months to return to throwing.

The surgery is seen as preferable for young athletes because generally the tendon’s tissue is still strong unlike Major League veterans who have put a lot of stress on their elbows over decades of use and abuse. In those situations, replacing the ligament can be more fruitful.

The kid returned to hitting in the last regular season game - just over 4 months after surgery.  He played CF through most of the playoffs and helped lead the team to the state championship.

Kaplan has a story in the Athletic about Josh James improvement by sleeping better. His velo has jumped from high 80's/low 90's to upper 90's since the diagnosis of sleep apnea

Quote
The story of how he discovered he had sleep apnea traces back to 2015, when his roommate with low-Class A, a pitcher named Ryan Thompson, complained of James’ intolerable snoring and encouraged him to get it checked out by a doctor.

During his 2016 season in high-Class A , James felt exhausted, his velocity lagged into the high 80s and he began to gain weight. As a result, James decided to see a sleep specialist in his offseason hometown of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He underwent a sleep study that he said revealed he was waking up almost 30 times a night when lying on his back and another 15 or so when on his side.

BA recently released that Astros International Free Agent Recap from last year.

Astros signed 49 players with the highest bonus at $300,000 (7 players got that bonus)

Some names to watch in the future:

Heitor Tokar 6'7" 250 RHP 17 years old.  88-91 fast ball with a plus 80-84 change.

Wilyer Abreu was able to play in the DSL last year (.286/.377/.345 in 34 games) He might be on the GCL roster when it comes out next month.  L/L 6'0" 170 - look for him to play center.

Sleeper who is already moved up:  21 year old RHP Luis Garcia signed for just $20,000.  When they scouted him, he was throwing mid 80's.  When they signed him he was hitting the high 80's and now he is in the low 90's.  Due to his age, they jumped him from the DSL to Quad Cities.  So far, in 5 games (18 IP) he has allowed 13 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 1 HR, 7 walks and has fanned 24.  has above average curve and throws strikes.

Also a score of 50 is considered the league average.

Ok, I give up. WTF is (are?) “Game Scores?”
An attempt to objectively evaluate a pitchers performance in a game.

From Wiki:

Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score:

Start with 50 points.
Add one point for each out recorded, so three points for every complete inning pitched.
Add two points for each inning completed after the fourth.
Add one point for each strikeout.
Subtract two points for each hit allowed.
Subtract four points for each earned run allowed.
Subtract two points for each unearned run allowed.
Subtract one point for each walk.

There is a newer version that I think fangraphs uses that treats all runs the same and punishes you if you give up a HR. I am not sure which model he used for these scores.

The end

Last night the team was swept by a solid baseball team.  4-0, 4-2.  Our pitching and defense were good but the bats didn't come through at the right times.

Son started game 1.  He went 5 1/3 IP.  When he was removed, he was down 4-0. He was on the mound, ball in the glove, the glove close to his heart.  He wasn't ready to give up the ball.  The coach told him we wanted to save some of his pitches if needed in relief in Game 2.  Son left the game and the relief pitcher did a nice job of getting the final two outs.  His line 5 1/3 (88 pitches), 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.  Son went 0-3 with 2 K's.

In between the games, their team went to the cage and took swings, our players hung out with family and friends.  It didn't look good for game 2.

In game 2, my son was brought in from 3rd to pitch with 2 outs in the top of 6th with the game tied and bases loaded.  He had not warmed up to pitch between innings.  He gave up a hard single to LF.  LF was occupied by the kid who had loaded the bases on the mound.  He misplayed the ball and all three runs scored.  Son struck out the next batter to end the inning.

We came to bat in the 7th down 4-1.  The first two outs came quickly.  Then a single.  My son walked. Next kid doubles to score one and put the tying run at 2nd.  Next kid strikes out K 2-3.  End of the season.

After the game, one of the other team coaches stopped my son and said "That was some voo-doo shit you were throwing, we were glad to get you out of the game".

Making responsible decisions sucks

The same coach asked him where he was playing ball next year and my son said no where.  The coach was shocked.  When my son explained he had an academic full ride to Auburn, the coach said "that makes sense".

My son has talked about walking on but he realizes with his velo (83-85), he isn't likely to make the team.  He realizes this may have been his last baseball game.  He is going to miss it and I am going to miss watching him.  But I am extremely proud of his decision to not go into debt to play baseball (he had some options at private schools).

Here is his line for his Sr Season:

Pitching: 60 2/3 IP, 64 H, 37 R, 15 ER, 70 K, 13 BB, 8 HBP, 1.731 ERA, 1.104 WHIP
Hitting:  .376/.427/.419 His 19 RBIs tied for the team lead.  9 of those came with 2 outs.

For his HS career:

Pitching : 169 IP, 143 H, 82 R, 38 ER, 162 K, 26 BB, 18 HBP, 1.574 ERA, 1.000 WHIP

No. A work ID is an employer asset. Just like a laptop or chair. Evidenced by the fact that they will take it back when an employee separates.

This is the way I have always experienced, along with the fee to replace it.

Agree.

I'm guessing that Keuchel will get more rope because of seniority and track record, but if McCullers rolls out a couple more jewels like the last one, the calls are going to grow pretty loud to replace him with McHugh.

I am chalking up McCullers last start to the weather and not being able get his breaking stuff to spin.   That said, at some point, he is going to have to learn how to pitch without his best stuff, just like every other pitcher who has had a long career.

He was interviewed by the local paper after the game.

Here is the game story from that game
When your local paper is a weekly, you have to wait a week for a game story.

Since then, the team has really come together.  They needed a sweep in their final area games to make the playoffs.  Son pitched the first game (7 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 94 P) - they won 9-1.  Second game was a tight contest.  Another pitcher who has been dealing with arm issues this year pitched his first complete game of the year and handled a great deal of traffic.  They got out hit 7 to 3 but managed a 2-1 victory.

Tonight was senior night and the final regular season game.  They play offs start next weekend and they will enter riding a 5 game win streak.

All runs count, whether earned or unearned.  If you meant that the scorer has discretion to count it as an earned run, I'm not sure what you're getting at.  The scoring rules are pretty clear.

Yes, I meant as an earned run.

When I did some minor league scoring, their old dos based software package would often ask is the run earned when a situation arose that gave the score keeper some discretion.  I never understood why it was asking the question until I found that section in the rule book.   I never used any discretion.

But there is a scorers option to still count it as a run, though it is rarely utilized:

(d) No run shall be earned when the scoring runner’s advance has been aided by an error, a passed ball or defensive interference or obstruction, if in the official scorer’s judgment the run would not have scored without the aid of such misplay.

So, my son was on the mound for what is likely his last home start last night facing the cross county rival.  Through 6 1/3 he had a no hitter going and a 7-0 cushion. The clean up man is up.  Two outs away from a no hitter.  And the kid laid down a great bunt down the 3rd base line.  My son makes a nice play but sails the throw.  Person scoring, scored it as an error.  The next kid hits a grounder through the 5 hole for the first hit.  Then the 3rd baseman makes back to back errors and we are at 7-2.  Son settled down and got the final two outs.

His line for the night was 7 IP, 1 H, 2 R/0ER, 7 K, 0 BB, 1 HB, 79 pitches.
Season line 48 IP/ 42 H, 32 R/ 11 ER/ 61 K/ 7 BB/ 7 HB/ 1.60 ERA/ 1.04 WHIP

He also went 2 for 4 at the plate.  He is hitting .400/.435/.450.  He has a hit in 20 out of 24 games this year.
(yeah, I am pretty proud of this kid's performance this year)

He was interviewed by the local paper after the game.  The reporter asked him about the bunt.  He said he gave a politically correct "I knew I just needed to settle down and get the last two outs".  I asked him what he wanted to say and he said "Well, I thought it was a real dickhead move to bunt down 7 just to break up a no hitter but....."  Glad his filter worked.

Today's lesson.  People are jerks and sometimes despite that, you have to still put on a good face.

And he loses 5 days of pay.  MLB is fine with it according to this quote from Manfred in the Athletic:

Quote
He served his five-game suspension. He lost his five days of pay. He's now on a 15-day disabled list stint. I think what they did was completely consistent not only with the rules but with the intent of the rules,” said Manfred, who was at Minute Maid Park for the Astros'...

And the article goes on to point out:

Quote
It would have actually saved them a game if they had placed Gurriel on the DL first. Season-opening DL stints were retroactive to March 26, meaning Gurriel would have been eligible to begin his five-game ban Thursday and return April 11 at Minnesota. By putting him on the DL Tuesday, the Astros will be without Gurriel until April 13 against Texas. (They are off April 12.)

In high school I hit cleanup because my coach told me “you’re the only guy on the team that can hit a curveball”. I guess he expected the cleanup guy to see lots of them.  I hated hitting cleanup, but my senior year we had a really good lead off man, so I managed to drive in a fair number of runs. Seems like that guy was always on base.

This is exactly the question my son's HS coach asked him to start the season.  My son went 3-4 against a team and the next time he saw them he went 1-6 in a DH.  He said he didn't get a single fastball in 6 at bats in the DH.  Seems like there is some wisdom to the question.

A college coach told my son's travel team several years ago.  I have coached for more than 20 years, I have never, NEVER, had a player who was a better curve ball hitter than a fast ball hitter.  Don't swing at a first pitch curve ball......unless it is hung.  Then kill it.  There is always an exception for every rule.

Fantastic article!

What does "'Chase the outs, if I shake, first sign,' I replied," mean?

I had took it to mean that with a runner on second, they would take the sign after the catcher flashed the number of outs.

And it was a great read.

Talk Zone / Re: Altuve extension?
« on: March 19, 2018, 05:18:54 pm »
Sure, but agents always use recent contracts to argue that their client should get the same or more.

Altuve's contract extension had the largest AAV for a position player agreed to this offseason.  And I am assuming that that is why Duman said that it would set the market....

But if I am a GM, I am using Altuve as my comp to establish the ceiling for Harper and Machado.

And before Altuve's contract... what was that ceiling?  Hosmer? 8 yrs AAV 18 million?   JD Martinez 5 yr AAV 22 million?   Altuve's sets the bar much higher.  GM's can use it as a ceiling but Boras/Agents can use it as a starting place or at least a reference point for bidding.  As long as there are two teams interested, anything can happen.

282
Talk Zone / Re: Altuve extension?
« on: March 19, 2018, 12:25:40 pm »
Why would Boras be okay with this?  He's looking for a lot more for his free agents next season -- both in terms of years and money.  If Altuve sets the market, then next year's free agents are not going to break the bank.

In terms of total WAR from 2012-2017, Altuve's WAR is 29.3, Machado is 28.0, and Harper is 26.1.

From this standpoint, Altuve is the most valuable of the three and he ONLY got a 5 year contact with an average salary of $25 million.  How does this help Machado and Harper.  And it's not like Altuve is much older -- he's only 2 years older than both Machado and Harper.

It is a heck of a lot more $ and more years than most of his clients got this off season.

Talk Zone / Re: Altuve extension?

While I agree that it was Altuve driving the extension, I bet Boras is okay with this as it helps set the price for the big free agent market next off season.

I have no problem with this in the minors. This isn’t about pace of play. It is about getting players on buses for 8 hour road trips at a better time. There is no value for an extra inning game from a developmental standpoint.

So the senior year is about half way done here in Alabama.  Lil Duman is having quite the season.

On the mound: 3W-1L- 1 Sv/ 22 IP/ 19 H/14 R/ 5 ER/ 5 BB/ 32 K/4 HB 1.59 ERA
Last night he came into the game with 2 outs in the 6th, runners on the corners with a 2 run lead. Struck out the lead off batter on 4 pitches.  We score an insurance run to make it 6-3.  #2 hitter leads off with a solid single.  Goes to second on a wild pitch.  The #3 hitter is their big stud.  One of the pitches grazes his pants leg.  He doesn't walk on to first.  Ump didn't call the HBP.  Coach goes ape, kid just digs back in the box.  Son later said he thought the kid told the ump he wanted to hit.  Count goes 2-2.  Son throws a change up that elicits a Todd Frazier type swing and the stud walks back to the dugout.  Next guy is frozen on a 2-2 curve for another K.  Next guy walks to put runners on the corners (another passed ball moved the lead off man over).  So tying run comes to the plate.

With a 1-1 count, a wild pitch allows a run to score and the other runner to get in scoring position.  I can tell my son is seething at this point.  Strike 2 swinging.  Ball 2.  Strike 3 swinging - catcher drops the ball but is able to throw the runner out at 1st.  A 4 out 4K save.

Lesson learned last night from the stud - Don't try to be the hero.  Take the free base when you can get it.

Oh, and he currently has an 11 game hitting streak and is hitting .455/.489/.545. Last year, he got 40 PAs all year long.  This coach has had him hitting clean up or in the 3 hole from day one.

New coach is a baseball coach.  Team is currently 10-5. What a difference a year makes.  The only gap right now is the starting SR catcher is out with a hurt finger for a few weeks due to a catchers interference.  He will make a big difference behind the plate.  He can block better than the sophomore who has been thrust into the everyday role.

It is going to impact the stall tactics to give relievers more time to warm up.

Also, it is a part of baseball culture that if the ump takes a direct hit from a wild pitch or foul ball, the catcher goes out to the mound to give him time to gather himself.  Does the injury clause cover that?

Just looking at the top 3 for the past 12 years is an eye-opener.

2017 - Martes, Tucker, D.Paulino
2016 - Reed, Martes, Bregman
2015 - Correa, Appel, Velasquez
2014 - Correa, Springer, Appel
2013 - Correa, Singleton, Springer
2012 - Singleton, Cosart, Springer
2011 - Lyles, DeShields, Villar
2010 - Castro, Mier, Lyles
2009 - Castro, Norris, Seaton
2008 - Towles, F.Paulino, Patton
2007 - Pence!, Patton, Albers
2006 - Hirsch, Patton, Nieve (

Other notable names: Max Sapp (#9 in 2007), Colin Delome (#9 in 2008), Jon Gaston (#9 in 2009), Chia-Jen Lo (#5 in 2009), Austin Wates (#9 in 2010), Tanner Bushue (#8 in 2010), Mike Foltynewicz (#9 in 2011), Nick Tropeano (#9 in 2012), Asher Wojciechowski (#10 in 2013) and Brett Phillips (#5 in 2014).

My theme looking at this list is 2 out of 3 ain't bad.  It is rare, even when you have a talent rich system to have all your prospects hit.  If you get 2 out of your top 3 to be every day players, that is success.  3 out of three in the majors is good too.  But what makes a great team is 2 out of 3 becoming stars (see 13 & 14).

MLB Network is filling the void with some position by position rankings.  They have Altuve & Correa as the best 2nd & SS.  It was the right field rankings that interested me. Look at the Astros connections.

1.   Judge
2.   Stanton
3.   Betts
4.   Harper
5.   JD Martinez (2011 - 13)
6.   Reddick (17 - Present)
7.   Avisail Garcia
8.   Domingo Santana (14-15 )
9.   Mitch Haniger
10. Dexter Fowler (14)

SI has a nice analysis of the trade.

Thanks for the link.  The stuff on Cole is good.  The stuff on what the Pirates got is lazy.

Quote
But you can’t help but feel that the Pirates could have done better, particularly given the expressed interest of the prospect-rich Yankees.

If they could have gotten more from the Yankee's, they would have traded with them.

Quote
Musgrove, 25, is another former first-rounder, but he’s been unexceptional as a swingman; last season, he was ripped for a 4.77 ERA in 109 1/3 innings, mostly out of the bullpen, with 18 home runs allowed in that span. He’s a back-of-the-rotation starter with limited upside.

Musgrove had a much better second half out of the pen.  His biggest issue as a starter was 3rd time through the line up.  He is not top of the rotation but his potential is better than back of the rotation.

They don't even mention Martin who is a top 20 prospect and has the upside as a 4th outfielder.

They got three guys who have already played in the majors and one guy who has played in AA at age 22.  That is a decent return.

The Tigers got higher ranked prospects from the astros for JV but none are even close to sniffing a MLB field.  I think the Pirates did okay.

Astros Add Dean Deetz and Cionel Perez to 40 man to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft.

Left unprotected are names like Jon Kemmer, Brandon McCurry, Cy Sneed, and Jason Martin.  In general, pitchers are more likely to be taken than position players just because you can bury then in the bullpen an not hurt their development.

Altuve and the rest of the team are always spot on in their treatment of fans.  I don't know whether Crash worked with them on their cliches or not, but it seems to come naturally to them. It's why we're convinced that they're not only great ballplayers, but good people.

My family had interaction with Altuve, Correa, LMJ, and Musgrove while they were in Gville.  I watched each of them give direct attention to my son while talking to him or signing things for him.  All were gracious with their time as 17-18 year olds.  Their parents should be very proud.

Maybin was paid 8 or 9 million last year.  Jake was  around 1.  I say they save their money and keep Jake.  They are going to need that money for all the players who are arbitration eligible who will see big jumps in their pay due to the seasons they produced (i.e. Springer who got 3.9 mil last year).

To me the priority for the Astros this off season is signing Altuve to a long term deal.  He has two team option years left on his current deal (6 mil and 6.5 mil).

This is a good Series. The ghost and I are pulling for the Astros. I’d rather lick a billy goat between the eyes than root for a Dodger.

The ghost wears an Astros hat. He once owned a million ball caps, but had never paid for a single one.
He was a steelworker who dangled from iron rafters, welding. Sometimes, he worked on roller coasters.
Once, he took me to an amusement park during business hours. He unlocked a chainlink fence to a secure area beneath a roller coaster. When the roller-cars rode the upside-down loops, it rained ball caps. Fifteen or twenty hats fell, every ride.

After a few weeks, he’d collected caps from almost every American team.

That is, except the Dodgers. We didn’t keep those hats. We dipped them in blue cheese and lit them with an acetylene blowtorch.

I’m listening to Hinch’s ALCS press conference from earlier today, and he heaped a lot of very genuine-sounding praise on Beltrán and his leadership, intelligence, and stature among his teammates. An interesting thought occurred to me: if Alex Cora, as expected, gets a managing gig somewhere, and Beltrán, I’m assuming, retires as a player... I wonder if they’d make him the new bench coach.

Not a bad thought.  One other thought I have had about a bench coach if Cora becomes a manager is Rodney Linares who has gotten rave reviews as a manager in the minors.  He managed many of the home grown players as they came up.

Jayne over at Whattheheckbobby has done her usual bang up job of laying out the upcoming Rule 5 draft

She starts with this reminder that really the 40 man is like the 43 man right now:
Quote
The current Astros 40-man roster is full to overflowing right now with the 60-day DL stints of Jandel Gustave and Brady Rodgers making them the 41st and 42nd player respectively. And, oh, what happens when David Paulino is eligible to play again? Hmmmm, getting a little crowded, isn't it? And, to make matters just a wee bit more complicated, at some point before late November, the Astros are going to have to figure out who to add and who to subtract or risk losing a player or two to the Rule 5 Draft.

Below the rules, she list the players eligible.  While there are names of interest on the list, the first players to watch will be the three that come off the current 40 man roster.

RHP Arcenio Leon was signed by the Astros back in 2005 out of Venezuela and pitched in the organization through 2012 (he even spent 2 years on the 40-man roster, first being added after the 2010 season). He later pitched in the Brewers and White Sox organizations before moving on to the Mexican League in 2016. Signed by the Tigers in the offseason, a nice spring in big league camp for them (when he wasn't pitching for Venezuela in the WBC) got him assigned to AAA Toledo at the outset of the season. The closer for the Mud Hens, he notched 10 saves with an 0.85 WHIP.

At age 30 (and after 12 minor league seasons), yesterday he was called called up to the big leagues for the first time. Hope he does well for Detroit.

All good stories must come to an end.  Leon was released by the Tigers

Hind Sight is 50-50 (to quote an old Auburn football coach).  It is easy to bash them about the decision to release him looking at current production.  However, it is important to remember that his 2013 numbers were not great.  82 K's in 86 games with a .272 on base percentage.  Plus his defense was way below replacement level (-1.6 Defensive War).

The Tigers took a chance no one else was willing to take and were rewarded for that.  Doesn't mean the Astros made the wrong choice.  Next spring listen to the number of players who are talked about having "reworked his swing" and see how many of those really produce different results.

348
This indeed is the gospel truth. In my opinion, pitch counts are the concession that travel ball coaches make to make a pitcher throw all year, which simply wears their young arms out early and which is, in my opinion, highly inadvisable. Then they never get to build up any endurance.

Pitch counts are there because coaches can't seem to put kids best interest ahead of wins.  When we moved to Alabama last year, coach talked about how much he cared about arms during the visit we had with him and that same day allowed his step son to throw 178 pitches in a 7 inning game.

Last season, my son said an opposing coach said they named the pitch count rule after our coach.  I think the NHSF pitch count recommendations or pitches and days of rest are reasonable.  120 pitches is a good stopping point for most high school kids.

All travel ball my son ever played wasn't based on pitch counts.  It was based on # of innings.  That is why pitch counts are needed.  9 & 10 year olds could throw 3 innings and still pitch 5 more the next day.  We saw kids throw 60+ pitches one day and then 100 the next.  That can't be good for a 9-10 year old arm.  Many of the kids who were "aces" at that age never made it as a good pitcher in HS.  Some were just early develop kids who everyone else caught up with in size.  Some just seemed to lose velocity.  Many of those were kids who were IMO overused.

One upside of pitch counts is now coaches have to develop more pitchers.  I am seeing more kids who had never pitched before being given a chance.

Now once kids get into pro ball and once bodies are mature, that is a different matter.

It's telling that the Astros got away without having to send any top prospects.

I keep seeing people say things like this.  Perez is an elite, top 100 prospect.  He is younger than Whitley and is also in AA.

Cameron pro career didn't start off great but he has had a very good year this year and when you compare his trajectory to his did, it is following the same trend line.

Rogers a very good catching prospect.

The Astros gave up three of their top 11 prospects. If you think that just because they weren't named Tucker & Whitley, they are top prospects, you need to get on the bus more.

I do agree, though, that Aoki is missed at the bottom of that lineup. He is a tough out that makes contact and uses the whole field.

Okay folks,  let's look at what Aoki was really doing.  In his last month with the Astros, he played in 16 games and had 47 plate appearances. Aoki had hits in only 8 of those games.  But one of those was a 3 hit game and another was a two hit game. He was good when he got in but only because he was being put in situations that were favorable for his success.  Oh, and many of his games were played with a healthy Correa (DL 7/19), and Springer (DL 7/29).

In the 26 PA since the trade, he is only hitting .208 with 5 Ks to 1 BB.  Did he get bad all of a sudden or are the situations he is in not as favorable?

Fischer has 61 plate appearances in 16 games this month so far (he appeared in a 17th but didn't get a PA)  Fischer has a hit in 9 of those games.  Each of those games has been a one hit game.  Springer came back 8/9, Gattis went out on 14th, McCann on the 15th.

Let's don't romanticize Aoki.  I am not convinced he would be doing much better than Fischer as an every day LFer. He was a good bench player.

  • Jake Rogers (BC/QC)--51% (29-57)
  • Jose Alvarez (DSL Orange)--49% (19-39)

This means little with out context of pitchers holding runners on and being quick to the plate.

Just tossing this out there: despite the many problems with milb.com transaction reporting, I wonder if this season they decided to start reporting these suspensions for team rules violations whereas in the past they might not have done so. So it's not that they're occurring more frequently, just that we're more aware of them because they now show up on the transactions pages. So if a guy missed a couple of games in prior years, due to the lack of reporting we might simply have chalked it up to rest or a minor injury rather than a suspension.

I agree.

Average fan is also not aware that the A's asking price for Grey from the Astros was likely much higher than the Yankees because they would have to face Grey more in the division if he were an Astro.  Basically the price for Grey and Darvish was higher because of being in the same division. That limits the pool for starting pitching.

Sickles reviews his preseason list today.

One interesting nugget to be found there:
Quote
10) Daz Cameron, OF, Grade B-/C+: Age 20, compensation round pick in 2015; hitting .241/.317/.436 with 11 homers, 22 steals, 32 walks, 93 strikeouts in 344 at-bats in Low-A; honestly very similar to his father Mike Cameron at the same stage.

Daddy Mike's year 20 season was .238/,292/.297 in low A ball. By end of his age 22 season, he was called up to White Sox, was a regular in year 24 season.

Lest we forget about deals at the deadline.  It might be good for every one to go back and read this classic:  Anatomy of a baseball trade.

Which included this memorable section:
Quote
At 7 p.m., Wade’s phone rings as he’s about to head home. It’s the general manager of another team inquiring for the first time about Bourn.

Astros: Wade – Our briefcases are packed up now, all we have to do is just say novenas for the rest of the night hoping Michael doesn’t get hurt. And I’m just about 10 paces from the elevator to push the button to go down to the parking garage. I said, “Out of respect, I don’t want to waste your time. I think we’re pretty far down the road on something.” And the response is, “Even if I’m willing to give you better players?” And I said, “Just take me at my word. We’ve known each other for a long time, stay out of it.”

If he makes it to the show I hope he's a "last name" guy. Because spelling that first name in the GZ 15-20 times a night could be an issue.

You could always shorten his first name to Abram or Abe.  He just happens to be from Quebec.

Two pitchers showing some impressive numbers so far this year:

Hansel Paulino - he has found some control.  His WHIP last year in 42 1/3 IP was 1.42 (42 H/ 18BB).  This year, in his first 20 2/3 IP, he has a WHIP of 0.87 (14 H/4BB).  If he keeps this up, he could be in Tri Cities soon.

Paulino with a very good outing last night.  5 2/3, 4 H, 0 R. 0 BB, 1 HBP, 5K.

Start was wasted as the offense only mustered 3 hits and the pen gave up 13! runs in the last 2 innings.

Not if he is ready to throw in the towel and retire. Rehab is hard work.
Nothing is indicating retire.  Even Dad's tweet says "this year".

The only injury related issue I could see is that he wanted take a different rehab plan than the Rays wanted him to take.  So they said fine, do it on your own dime and time.

The Ray's comment makes it sound more serious than that.

Leovanny Rodriguez - He started the year in Tri Cities and was shelled.  He has found success in Greeneville.  in 17 IP he has allowed 13 hits and just 1 walk (WHIP 0.82).

Both of these guys are 21 so they are slightly above league average in age.  Both are among the leaders in ERA in the league as well.

People were saying the same thing about the Astros a few years ago.  It has worked out pretty well.  They haven't lost any significant pieces, though they got lucky that no one picked up Devo in the rule 5 draft when he was left unprotected.

Just a slight addendum here: that only applies to the guys signing at age 17 or older. For the players who get signed at age 16 (which generally includes the most sought-after players), they have to wait until the following year before they're actually eligible to play. Teams want to get those guys under contract as soon as possible for fear some other team comes in and signs them (verbal agreements notwithstanding).

And they want to get them to their academies so they can work on mechanics, nutrition, strength training and English skills.

It probably doesn't change the consensus, but those players listed were from both the Kazmir and the Gomez/Fiers trades.  And the Astros might very well have missed out on valuable post-season experience without those trades.

My list just included the Gomez/Fiers trade.  That trade has replaced the Huff trade as the worst one to me.  Not that it shouldn't have been made, it just didn't work out and may have long lasting benefit for the Brewers.  Not sure how much it actually hurts the Astros.  I wouldn't take Santana or Phillips over Fisher or Tucker.  Hader may wind up being the biggest loss.

The Kazmir trade looks fine.  Nottingham hasn't been as good since the trade and Mengden made the show but would just be AAA depth with the Astros.

Last thing.... (and I certainly don't mind if all of these questions go unanswered due to it being the wrong forum...) Do you get attached to some of these prospects insomuch that a trade deadline like this one is pretty tough? In particular, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this trade deadline regarding what seem to be top flight talent in discussions for (at this point at least) a slightly lackluster 2017 trade class (no "Randy Johnson/Andrew Miller etc").

I don't know about Nate but I do get attached to some of the minor league guys.  Regardless of the the loss is trade, free agency or being released.  I hate to see some of them go.

The veterans are playing a key role.  I think one of the significant differences between 2016 Cubs and 2017 Cubs are the lack of David Ross and Dexter Fowler and the leadership provided (and Fowler's defense).  The loss/addition of intangibles are hard to quantify and are rarely noticed until things change.

More on Serrano's situation came out yesterday:

Josh Ward‏ @Josh_Ward  Jun 14
Right now, Kyle Serrano intends to play baseball at Tennessee next season. He said he told the Astros he won't sign for less than $300,000.
Here is more of what he had to say
Quote
Serrano said he "took advantage of a lot of situations" during his first stint at Tennessee and he "made a lot of mistakes" playing for his dad, "mistakes that wouldn't have been allowed at a lot of other places."

"I had my dad as my coach," Serrano said. "I wasn’t looking at him as my coach and I wasn’t respecting him as my coach a lot of times and I kind of got a little payback for it.

"I’m really looking forward to maybe possibly having the opportunity to play for coach Vitello and being held to a higher standard. And I think it’s going to work out really good if I got back to Tennessee."...

"I told him (Vitello) I’m actually really looking forward to playing in college and finally being just Kyle Serrano, the baseball player," Serrano said, "and not the coaches’ son."

Phillips got sent back down yesterday but now the Brewers have called up Josh Hader (last of the 4 players sent in the Carlos Gomez trade to see big league time). Hader has walked 31 in 52 IP for Colorado Springs this year and his K rate is down considerably from last year.

Phillips back to the brew crew.  Due to Travis Shaw being placed on family medical emergency leave.  He is in the line up tonight. Hope everything is okay with Shaw's family:
Quote
As mentioned before, the Brewers had already called up Phillips to make his big league debut earlier this week, but he went back down when Travis Shaw returned from paternity leave and Paolo Espino was needed to make yesterday’s start. Normally a player cannot be recalled within 10 days of getting optioned to the minor leagues, but this is an atypical situation that allows Phillips to be immediately brought back to Milwaukee. There has been no official announcement regarding Shaw’s family emergency, but the timing is especially concerning given that him and his wife had a baby only a few days ago. His family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

« on: June 08, 2017, 09:36:54 am »
I recently saw that the Astros have had 9 players drafted & signed from the 2012 draft make the majors:
(Correa, LMJ, Fontana, Rogers, Ruiz, Phillips, Tucker, Hauschild, Jankowski)

I wondered how that compare to other teams, so here are the results:

No other team has had that many make their debut.  Several have had 7 make it: A's, Dodgers, Mets, & Red Sox

The impact measured by WAR is as follows:
Astros = 16.7
Dodgers = 12.6
Cards = 12.1 (had 5 players make MLB debut but several with positive impact - Wacca 5.4 & Piscotty 4.3)
A's = 11.2
Mets = 1.7
Red Sox = -1.7

Among players, the highest career WAR of those players are:
Correa 12.7
Corey Seager 9.7 (Dodgers)
Alex Wood 9.0 (Braves)
Addison Russell 8.8 (A's)
Marcus Stroman 7.3 (Blue Jays)
Matt Duffey 6.4 (Giants)
Jake Lamb 6.1 (D Backs)
Devon Travis 6.0 (Tigers)
Gausman 6.0 (O's)
LMJ 5.7

It is not uncommon to see releases and retirements happen as the draft approaches.  I actually see the retirements as a good thing.  I think it says something about a player when they see the writing on the wall and want to get on with life rather them having the "they can have this glove when they pry it out of my cold dead fingers" mindset.

It also makes me wonder if the players are getting feedback from the team about what role they can expect to play.  Some guys aren't okay just being on the team and coaching 1st.

Spent some time in the league stats today to see where the BC guys stacked up.  As always take MILB stats with a grain of salt until you get to about AA. But for context, the average age for hitters in the league is 22.5 and for pitchers it is  22.9.

Kyle Tucker (20) is dominating the league.  He is tied for 10th in hits, tied for 2nd in 2B, T-5th in 3B, 2nd in HR, T-6th in Runs scored, 7th in RBI, 1st in total bases, 3rd in Slugging %, 3rd in OPS, T-3rd in SB and T-4th in caught stealing.

Jason Martin (21) is having a solid season.  4th in runs scored, and T-5th in HR.

Miles Straw (22)  is 9th in runs scored, T-8th in stolen bases.

Ryan Birk (22) is T-5th in triples

Dexture McCall (23) is T-6th in Walks but T-7th in K's

Osvaldo Duarte (21) is having a rough season.  He makes the top 10 in two negative categories.  T-7th in K's and T-4th in caught stealing.

On the mound, Yoanys Quiala (23) is 10th in ERA, T- 6th in WHIP and just outside the top 10 in K's

Nick Hernandez (22) is T-7th in most games, T-2nd in saves

Justin Ferrell (23) is T-6th in runs allowed, T-10th in HR allowed, T-5th in earned runs allowed.

Elieser Hernandez (22) is 7th in earned runs, T-4th in hit batters, but T-9th in strike outs

Ryan Deemes (23) is T-9th in saves along with Riley Ferrell who has been promoted to CC.

Framber Valdez (23) is T-8th in walks allowed.

I missed this last week.  Apparently David Paulino threw 2 innings in extended spring training on the 1st.  I haven't seen anything about him since then.  He's expected to go to Fresno when he's healthy.  Here's hoping that will happen soon.

Your hope is happening:

I thought is was for $25K.  They had to pay 50 to draft him

Released 4/17 per MiLB transaction page.

When a player is released this close to camp breaking, it usually means there has been a problem of some kind.  Rarely do they assign a kid they are about to release to a full season club.

In Gville one year, two players were released after the police were called to the hotel.  The incident involved a minor who was drunk.  He had been drafted in the 10-14 round area the year before.  He was released on the spot as was the NDFA who was involved with him.

They are just continuing the trend last year of keeping an extra 1-3 players around all the time and abusing the "inactive" status.  I expect we will see a rule change eventually if this keeps happening.

Every team does it and no one ever complains.  They used to not post those transactions.  The manager just took the line up card with the available players to the ump.  I saw a game once where the pitcher came in from the pen and the ump called the manager back out.  That player wasn't on the roster that day so he was removed without ever throwing a pitch.

The team has lost 8 of their last 10 the two wins were with my son on the mound.  The team is falling apart.  It is sad to watch.  He will likely have one more start before the year is out.

Current line is 3-3 / 47 2/3 IP / 36 H/ 26 R/ 12 ER/ 50 K/ 4 BB/ 3 HBP/ 1.76 ERA/ .881 WHIP

He didn't get the final start.  They let a senior start the last game, as they should have since it really didn't matter.  They lost again.  They lost 9 or their last 10 to finish the year 14-18.  Very frustrating season.

LHP Cionel Perez--the recent Cuban signee needed additional time before being thrown into game competition. Sounds like the Astros do want to put him at a FS affiliate when he's ready rather than wait until the SS clubs open up.

I hear somewhere that they were waiting for warmer weather before moving him to QC.  I guess trying to insulate him from the shock of Iowa spring weather.

I've genuinely enjoyed these updates/lessons, Duman.
And lest we forget the joys of childhood baseball, my 7-yr-old caught a pop fly in a game today.  I couldn't see it from two states away, but I imagine it was a 10-foot bloop that somehow landed in the open glove dangling by his side.  I'm certain his general obliviousness will result in many (or few) Sexy Bitch catches over the year(s).

Catching pop flies is huge at that age.  I was more busy looking for 4 leaf clovers than catching the ball at that age.

1st area game last night.  Son dueled a kid who has signed with Alabama as a pitcher to a 1-1 tie through 8 innings.  Son's team took the lead in the 9th off a reliever.

Son's line from last night 8 IP/3 H/ 1 R/ 0 ER/ 2 K/ 0 BB/ 1 HBP. Defense made 5 errors but made many more plays than they missed.  The kid who was responsible for most of the errors ended up getting the big hit in the 9th to give the team the lead.

Throwing him a "get a strike" fastball there is just bad baseball, however.

That is one of the challenges and lessons this year.  Sometimes, your coach/boss is an idiot.  He blamed the loss the day my son pitched on the fact the boys chose to wear a different hat rather than the one they had worn for the last 4 wins. He said it to me and another dad.  He was serious.  Really dude? A hat! Not the 8 errors, four unearned runs and 2 HR caused us to lose 7-6?

I'm sure it was. My question is why didn't he just throw a fastball well off the plate and move on to the next guy?

The more efficient route would have been to just plunk the kid and save the pitches since he was near the max #.  The message he has heard from me and from other coaches is that folks who ignore what the coach calls to do what they think is right are selfish and not a team player.  For example, he has a kid on the team right now who won't bunt when the coach calls it. It pisses him off that the coach won't do something about the selfish behavior.  He is learning there are exceptions to every rule and figuring out the exceptions is the hard part. And the part that requires courage.

I say go juco for a year, play ball and stack up as many basics as you can, and work on the transition from home to college. Then after that first year, he will have a better perspective.

First of all, thanks for indulging my rants and brags.

Son pitched yesterday.  6 1/3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 10 K, 1 BB.  Team made 8 errors.  2 by 3rd, 3 by SS, 1 by 1B and 2 by LF on balls he didn't field cleanly off the ground allowing extra basses.

After pitching around error trouble in the first two innings; in the 3rd, he gave up a double, followed by a HR to a kid who has signed with the Univ. of Alabama. Tied 2-2 after 3.

In the top of the 6th, his team puts 4 on the board to give him a 6-2 cushion.  But in the bottom half, the error bug bits for 3 unearned runs to make it 6-5.  Nothing happens in the top half of the inning.

Bottom of the 7th (son starts inning at 109 pitches) error allows lead off to reach.  They bunt him over.  So....

Kid coming to the plate has already hit one out in this game.  And he hit one out against another team in an earlier game that day (spring break tourney).  First base is open, who votes we walk him?  Coach says pitch to him.  Gets him to swing and miss at a change.  Misses with the next three pitches.  On his 121pitch, kid his his second HR of the game and 3rd of the day for a walk off HR.

Wind was blowing out to center pretty strong. It might have helped the first HR but not the second. It was crushed.

Frustrating loss.  After game, coach comes to me and says "I need to talk with you and your wife about your son.  I have had a juco coach call me about him and wanted to know what your interest is."  The juco coach had been at the previous game he pitched to watch two other kids who have signed with him and saw our son pitch.  Son has already told the HS coach, he isn't really interested in a juco because he is going to college for academics not to try and extend his ball career.  Still it is nice to be noticed and the timing was good after a rough loss.

Third looks a little shaky and we know that his catcher sucks... I like how he seems already to have learned a lesson that other pitchers sometimes never learn - the solo home run doesn't mean dick. Also, I imagine he's learned this one, now, too - don't get behind in the count to some big bastard who can hit the ball five hundred feet.

Yep 3rd is very shaky.  Different catcher this time.  And he only had one other three ball count.  He threw first pitch strikes to 25 of 32 batters.  67/98 pitches were strikes.

Really proud of my kid last night.  Pitched a great game and overcame adversity in the process.

1st inning - E5 gave an extra out.  Stranded runner at third. 0-0
2nd inning - E5 and dropped 3rd strike gave two extra outs.  Stranded runner on 3rd. up 1-0
3rd inning - gives up single and double.  Run scores but strands runner at 3rd again. up 3-1
4th inning - just a lead off single and no other adventure.  Easiest inning. up 3-1
5th inning - gives up a no doubt HR on a 3-1 pitch.  Next batter he freezes for a K.  Gives up a double and then a HBP before getting the final out on a 3 pitch K.  up 3-2
6th inning - another easy 1,2, single, 3 inning. up 5-2
7th inning - another easy 1,2,single caught stealing.  5-2 final.

Line for the night 7 IP (98 pitches), 8 hits, 2 runs, 2 ER, 11 K, 0 BB, 1 HBP

Never saw any bad body language or frustration.  Highest K total ever.

Times have certainly changed, as have we and what we consider intimidating, but I can't imagine that coaches still aren't, at least to 16-17 year olds.  Even without the dramatics.  Perhaps I'm naïve, but if even if the coach wasn't barking and throwing things, he was still intimidating because...well, he was the coach and had demands and expectations.  Again my old coach, he was the in your face yelling type, but he also had a teaching side.  There were times when he would let you fall on your face, then come over and put his arm around you and say "here's what happened and why...you see now where you've got to...?"  He was an asshole, but he wasn't a bad coach.

I think in general, people have lost the distinction between fear and respect.  There were several adults in my life as a kid I respected and I didn't want to disappoint.  Some of them could raise their voice and yell and even get very personal with their remarks  but I was never afraid of them. I am all for a coach, teacher, band director, etc... having high expectations and making it clear when you have not met those expectations.  I am not okay with fear based intimidation that is not based in making the kid learn or get better, just showing that you have more authority.

Delino Deshields says the Astros "stunted his growth"

Quote
What he does best is run. He showcased that with 101 stolen bases in in 2012 between Single-A and High-A. It showed, at least early on, in his bunting ability. But at some point that changed. DeShields Jr.’s approach changed at the plate, appearing to try for more home runs. It was a learning process in the field, too. He’d spend one practice at second base, the next in left, the next in center and then back at second. Ultimately, it was an environment and culture that DeShields Jr. believes stunted his growth.

“I was in a situation in Houston where they weren’t really pushing guys,” he said. “After all the good years that I did have, it was slow for me even though I felt like I was contributing on a high level. I felt like I was ready to go. For me being 21 years old, it was kind of discouraging.

“I’m not saying I didn’t care. I was obviously wanting to play, and I always play to win.”

There are going to be people in your life who in trying to be helpful, do just the opposite.

My son was pitching last night.  Rebounded nicely from a lead off HR to a kid who went 7-7 in the DH with a BB and HBP.

In the 4th inning, the catcher took a foul ball off the leg.  Ump goes out to the mound to give the catcher time to recover.  Tells my son, "if you had a better catcher, you would have 5-10 more strikes".  There was no need to say that to my son.  He doesn't get to choose his catcher.  So by trying to make my son feel better, he increased tension between my son and the catcher.  Thanks blue. Why don't you just add if the 3B hadn't committed 2 errors in the second, he would have thrown another inning before reaching his pitch count limit.

He wasn't wrong.  Catcher was not sticking pitches. He was letting the glove drop and was taking ball out of the zone.

« on: January 30, 2017, 03:42:57 pm »
Losing draft picks in baseball isn't quite the same as in football or basketball.  I just did a quick look back over the Astros history.  They have never had the all their players drafted in the first three rounds make it to the pros.  The two times they had 100% make it were 2007 when they lost their # 1 & #2 picks and their #3 made it but not with the astros so he didn't sign.  The other was 2003 when they had no #1 but #2 & #3 made it but #2 was Stubbs who didn't sign with the Astros.  So no real 100% drafts.

There were 7 drafts were none of the players drafted in the top 3 rounds made it to the majors (72, 73, 81, 99, 06, 09, 13 so far anyway but two were traded away).

The worst was 91.  The Astros had 8, yes 8 picks in the first three rounds.  Only one player made it to MLB.  That was John Burke with a career war of -0.5.  So yeah, that draft sucked.

So I don't know how much it hurts the Cards but I think it helps the Astros because the more picks you get, normally the more chance you have of finding a solid player.

The Astros had a good run in 10 (3/5), 11 (2/3) and 12 (3/4) and have already had 1 each make it from 14 & 15.

So this year, the Astros will have 5 picks in the first three rounds.  They have had that # in 89 (4/5), 94 (4/5), 05 (3/5), 08 (2/5), 10 (3/5) and 15 (1/5 so far).  If they can get 3 out of the 5 to the bigs, it will be a successful draft.

With the cards already losing their top draft pick by signing Fowler, I am not sure a 2nd round pick loss is enough compensation, unless they add a fine to that.  So total loss would be 2nd round pick & bonus money allotted, plus 2 million fine.  Would that be enough?

Apparently players with New Balance endorsements all did this letter to my future self.  I loved Altuve's but also enjoyed McHughs

Keep an eye on Vlad Sutil down in GCL.  He is an impressive individual.

Also the fact the CC still is on the staff in Gville is great.  Not many orgs have a team legend on the staff of a short season team year after year.  He has a great deal of impact on the young players.

BA had a very lengthy article on it last night. Does a good job of telling all sides of the story.

According to BA, here are the changes to the rule 5 draft

1. $100,000 per major league draft pick up from $50,000

2 $24,000 for each minor league portion pick up from $12,000.

3. AA portion of draft is gone. So what was the AAA portion is now the only option.

I guess there is something cooking on the hot stove this year.  MILB signs deal to make Bush's the official Bean of Minor League Baseball.

Let the bad puns continue....

I'm not sure what to make of the Astros having no intriguing prospects available.

What I make of it is that the guys who would have needed to be protected have either been promoted to the 40 man or have been traded.

Only 6 of the MLB top 30 prospects are on the 40 man roster.  So that tells you the rest of the guys haven't been with the org long enough to be eligible for the rule five draft.

In other words, the pipeline is in good shape.

Which is a reminder to us to not flip out when prospects are traded.

Wild theory here but I wonder if one of the reasons the price for Cuban players is dropping is they are not having to "reimburse" smuggling fees.

I am sure the main reason is the bloom is off the rose but just got me thinking.  Always a dangerous thing.
