The Road to Omaha begins...
« on: February 05, 2007, 03:39:39 pm »
I made it out to the Disch, er, Dell Diamond yesterday to see the Horns drop the finale of a three-game set to San Diego yesterday.

It's hard to beat a beautiful sunny afternoon at the ballpark... in February, even when your team loses.

Anyone else take in some college games this weekend?

I'll be heading over to the College Classic on Saturday. Shame UT isn't participating this year, but as always there are plenty of very good teams.

I made it out to the opener on Friday afternoon, and man it was cold.  Clear skies made it a little easier, but when the sun dropped behind building in about the sixth inning I gave in.  Unfortunetly that was about the time USD pulled their ace, Brian Matusz (4th round, LA Angels in last years draft)and the Horns staged a bit of a come back, but came up short 6-5.  You definetly picked the right game as far as the weather was concerned.

Caught the Rice game on Saturday.  They look to have deep pitching, as usual (will be deeper if Savery's shoulder continues to shape up), and a better offense than last season.

Looking forward to the College Classic.

I assume the park isn't nearly full for the Classic, but can I expect to find seat on the lower level along the baselines if I'm a walk-up on Saturday afternoon?

The tickets are general admission. Finding a good seat is not a challenge.

I attended Friday and Sunday in Round Rock.  UT's freshman starter on Sunday did a great job, he was just left in an inning too long.  Cold as it was Friday, it was still nice to see live baseball again.  I can't wait for the Disch to open back up so I don't have to make that damn drive any more.

Where was Aaron Luna playing and hitting in the lineup?

Speaking of lineups, any UT guys have an idea why Wheeless was batting eighth Fri. and Sat.?  He moved up to sixth yesterday, but I thought it was strange that he was batting so low the first two games.

After being juggled between LF & 3B as a freshman, he's the full-time 2Bman this year.

He hit cleanup, Friday-Zornes-Luna-Savery is a very stout 2-5.

According to the new Collegiate Baseball poll, here are the participants ..

1. Rice
6. Vanderbilt
12. Arizona St.
20. Baylor

They only list the top 30 this week, but in last week's preseason poll, they had Houston at #33 and Texas A&M receiving votes. A good field for sure.

Don't be so sure.  Last year's Rice/UT game (the Sat. night game) was the largest crowd ever to see a college baseball game.  Rice is playing Baylor on Sat. night, and rumour is, Drayton is trying to realy pump up the attendance.  Even people with connections are having a hard time getting tickets, let alone the good seats.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

No idea. Russell batted eighth yesterday, which surprised me. Augie tinkers with the lineups a lot, though.

I won't be able to go back home for the Classic this weekend. Man I (like every college fan in the world) would love to make it out to the Vandy Rice game. If it's anything like last years Rice/Texas classic it's going to be a great game.

I will however get to check out Rice tomorrow night in San Marcos.

Thanks for the knowledge, Lefty.

I've been following Luna with interest ever since he was a two-sport star at Southlake-Carroll.

I wonder if Graham, Major, or now Bailiff have tried prying Luna away from Graham for football season.  The kid was a damned salty RB in high school.

Well I'll be damned. I didn't go last year, but the previous two years wandering around and finding good seats was a cinch. I guess I'll try to hold onto whatever seat I get in the morning. Thanks for the heads-up.

ETA: Though I'd bet with the lack of Longhorn particpation this year, there won't be the full complement of yahoos in burnt orange which will diminish the overall attendance.
