Jason Stark explains the Pettitte deal

Quote:

How did the Astros lose Andy Pettitte to the Yankees over a measly couple of million bucks?

Quote:

The buzz around baseball is that MLB officials -- particularly commissioner Bud Selig -- weren't happy with the Astros for giving $100 million over six years to free agent Carlos Lee. So owner Drayton McLane might be trying to placate MLB's hard-liners by attempting to hold down the rest of his payroll.

Awesome.

Screw Selig!  Maybe now Clemens will jump over to the Yankees too and not hold us by the knads until May.  WTF was Selig when they Red Sox gave Lugo 36M?  Hope Selig continues to dry up and just rots away.

That smells of extreme bullshit. What does McLane have to lose for him to placate Selig?

This sounds like a rehash of the situation with...crap I can't think of the guy's name.  The UT outfielder we ended up losing out on because apparently Selig didn't like the fact that we were going to offer more than the slot we took him in (was it Stubbs?)  Anyway, I don't get where Selig can get upset at us for spending $100 million on Lee when the Cubs drove the market up for any FA that's still breathing with that asinine Soriano contract and at the Red Sox for spending $36 million on an "adequate" shortstop.  He oughta leave the Astros alone, start planning his retirement, and let the Astros spend what McLane says he can spend.

Was he upset about JD Drew?  Plus some level of tampering.  This is a load of crap period.  I am so sick of baseball media being such apologists for Boston and NY teams.

that's completely ridiculous.  Stark is usually better than that.

It really is bizarre that he can't figure the difference betweena a 1 and 2 year deal, and can't see that Pettitte gettting MORE money from the Yankees would probably anger Selig more than the Astros signing him for less.   It actually might be the worst reasoning I've seen this week from ESPN.

I had thought I read that the Giants actually offered Lee more money than the Astros did.  If that is true, then Selig should be sucking MClane's dick for keeping salaries down.

Suck that dick, Bud.  Suck that dick.
You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you. Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here, close. You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?

Perhaps.  But this story is ridiculous. The Astros didn't want to pay $28 million over two years to an injury-risk pitcher who had a mediocre season last year.  That's why there was no deal.
