Jon Heyman: "Taylor Buchholz failed his physical..."

This is innuresting:

Jon Heyman, formerly of the New York Daily News, says Taylor Buchholz failed his physical

Heyman claims that was the deal buster.  And of course, as a New York media member, he has to add his "Lastngs Milledge" rumor/report for the day.  They just can't help themselves!

Later in his report, he states that the "Astros are in the middle of everything" going on in the winter meetings.  On the block are Morgan Ensberg and Chris Burke in just about every deal they're trying to consumate.

Is it typical to do a physical on a player before he's traded? I thought they make the deals 'pending a physical,' not the other way around.

Which is the "innuresting" part of his report.  It makes no sense, IOW!

What has been wrong with Buchholz in the past has been a weak shoulder.  He doesn't want to go under the knife to find out what the problem may be, so he does the "rest and rehab" method of keeping his shoulder intact for the season.

Maybe since the ChiSox were involved in the Mike Sirotka debacle a few years back, a SOP is to send x-rays ahead to a team to evaluate the player before hand.  Anything a doctor sees as suspicious in the shoulder or elbow is probably a reason to fail a young man.

According to Buchholz himself, he did not fail a physical.

Hmmmm... I thought he wasn't going to have the surgery.  I guess he did afterwards.  But like I said, it may not be about "taking a physical", but failing an x-ray review by the other team's doctor.

But at this point, who knows!  Not me, that's for sure!

Heyman also claims that Hirsh was part of the deal.

"The White Sox traded Freddy Garcia to the Phillies on Wednesday and nearly sent Jon Garland to the Astros. The trade hit a snag and fell through, however, when young right-hander Taylor Buchholz failed a physical. Chicago also stood to receive speedy center fielder Willy Taveras and right-hander Jason Hirsh in the deal."

I'm hoping the consensus is right- that the reports are BS. I  would hate TB, Wily and Hirsch for Garland- hate it.  That's gotta net Dontrelle Willis for me to be happy (not that it matters)

I am not sure Hirsh is worth Garland straight up.  Jason should put up #4 numbers in 07 and maybe #3 type numbers in the near future.  Garland seemed to be the most overrated of the Sox staff.  When his sinker was off, it wasn't pretty in 06.  Hirsh is no worse than Garland stuff wise and obviously a hell of alot cheaper.

Problem is, stuff-wise isn't enough to know whether Hirsh can throw 200 effective innings in 2007. Garland is a better bet for that. Not that I'm advocating trading Hirsh for Garland, but I think you're overlooking which one has a better chance to fill a big need for the Astros in the immediate future.

Anybody catch this sentence?
Quote:

The Astros were tremendously close to landing Garland from the White Sox on Thursday morning for a group of players.

A group of players?  A group is surely more than two.  I certainly hope not I think that would be too much for Garland.
