Free Agent Pitcher Wish List

Ok, for sake of argument, say neither Pettitte or Clemens returns, and money is not a consideration.  Who would be your top 5 (in order) free agent pitchers on your wish list for the Astros?

Schmidt
Williams (If reasonable)
Wolfe
Mulder (flyer)
That's about it.  I wouldn't want Zito for the price tag he is sure to fetch.

I think a Rotation of Roy O, Schmidt, Williams or Wolfe, and fill in with Mulder if healthy or Hirsch, Sampson/Albers
would be pretty fair for a rotation.  I would think the price tag would come in at about 40 mil for those guys. Figure 10 Million to the bullpen and that makes about 50 million tied up.  Berkman, Bidgio, Ausmus and 3b to be named later would be another 25 million.  Everett, Wily, Scott, Lee would make another 20 million.  5 million on the bench.  100 million total.  I think that's a playoff team in the National League.

OK, money is not an object...

1) Zito - only because he is younger
2) Schmidt
------------
3) Adam Eaton - Not a top rotation guy but very good middle rotation guy
4) Randy Wolfe - Would have to pass physical stuff
5) Woody Williams - Whole local thing, but age scares me a bit

There are some guys who might move up a bit if we are not relying on them to be anything more than end of the rotation guys.  But I would like to see Hirsh and some others get a shot in the rotation too,  We have to find out sometime.

Edited in: I left off Mulder who I would probably add ahead of Williams, but he has injury concerns too.  So he probably would be #3 or 4.

Interesting tidbit from Rosenthal...

Quote:

Schmidt, on the verge of his biggest payday, changed his representation just before the general managers' meetings, leaving Michael Moye and Scott Sanderson to return to Randy and Alan Hendricks; the pitcher had switched to Moye and Sanderson last March. The Hendricks brothers now control three of the top pitchers on the free-agent market ? Schmidt, right-hander Roger Clemens and left-hander Andy Pettitte . . .

A package deal?  That would be cool.  Impossible, but cool.
