JOEL SHERMAN November 4, 2006, "The Astros like Sheffield, but their attempts to find a slugger are said to be focusing on free agent Carlos Lee or using closer Brad Lidge and center fielder Willy Taveras to make a trade for someone such as Cincinnati's Adam Dunn, a Houston native who is available."   Link

I have no idea who Joel Sherman is, but Ken ussually has some pretty good contacts... while he is still a talking head, thus not to be totally trusted, he is a bit more reliable than most.

And if the Astros are looking to trade Taveras, I really hope they get a CFer back, not a corner OFer.

Me too...I was thinking that such a trade would be a perfect fit for the Braves in acquiring Andrew Jones...then I remembered he's only got one year left on his contract and retains the services of Satan as his agent.

Nevermind.

Wells would be my target, but honestly, I am not sure I want to part with Taveras... but I would like to add one or two bats.  I have made multiple trade scenarios... some more likely than others.

I still firmly believe that the Astros will make one major FA add and one major Trade this off-season.  Maybe more than one FA add, but I think definately one of each is a strong possibility.

Joel Sherman is from the NY Post.  I trust neither Sherman nor Rosenthal without collaboration.



And no one ever should!

Although, in my opinion, the trade package of Taveras + Lidge has some legs.  Too many moving parts, at this point, but if they lose Taveras in a trade, CF is a problem.  Matthews is an economically feasible option at 3yr/18mil.
And Lidge + Taveras should yield something valuable in return, maybe in the area of pitching (I read Florida really likes Taveras!!!)

I like GMJ, but I wonder if the allure of playing for the Cubs (being one of his Dad's old teams) is there.

He is a nice option if others don't work and Taveras is traded.

He admitted to me once in email that he'll post his column to the internet without checking accuracy in order to get it there as quickly as possible.

I don't mind that, as long as he (1) updates the info as he gets it checked out and (2) understands the difference between "checking accuracy" and "making shit up"

I think it will be more than that. I look for the Astros to be a different team next year. It's good to have an owner that will spend to win.

Maybe to trade to another team. I think there will be a lot of attention for Lidge this off season and anyone with a closer up for grabs will have a nice bargaining piece. I was simply throwing that out there since there has been many rumors/reports/propoganda/BS involving Lidge and Willy.

Jim, any thoughts on Gary Matthews Jr?  Watching him, while I lived in Dallas, I thought he was a good OF but didn't offer much offense at the position he played.  However, as a top of the order hitter, he offers more power than Taveras as well as being a switch hitter (overrated attribute, maybe, but still appealing).  

I'm not asking whether the Astros will sign him.  I'm curious as to your thoughts, if any, on how he measures up defensively.

I just wouldn't want to overpay for his career year.  And that seems like what someone is going to do.  Especially if Tom Hicks is involved.

Yes.  I liked him even when he was a Cub.  

Besides being a pretty good offensive player (though last season was probably his career year, and in a very hitter friendly park) and an excellent defensive CF, he plays balls-to-the-wall, all the time.  Fun to watch.

A lot like his old man in that sense.  'Little Sarge' -- it sounds like a diminutive nickname, but in this case I would think it is an honor to have.

Well yeah, that was a great play.  But you can't base a multi-million dollar contract on a single play.  I think he's a good OF.  He's also a pretty solid top of the order/leadoff hitter.  

I'm not overlooking the fact that he had an offensive breakout season in a contract year.  I think he'd be a nice player to have, like Huff, at the right price.  I would't expect the offensive production he had last year, mostly because the Astros don't have a lineup that compares to Texas.  Of course, the Astros also like to emphasize defense so it's not a straight apples to apples comparison!

and he's in his mid-30's. A little dicey going with a multi-year large contract. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to have him in Houston but I'm not sure I would spend my $$ that way. I think he lives in Houston so he may be real interested although he also has family in SoCal.

Dallas News says Tori Hunter was quoted as saying he would be interested in playing whereever Ron Washington ended up managing when he is free after 2007 season. So, does that tell Ranger brass to save their money on Matthews for Hunter and fill in next season with someone?
