Did I just hear Joe Buck say....
« on: October 19, 2006, 12:21:43 am »
...that if the Gas Can closes out this game it would mark the third consecutive year that the NLCS went seven?

Um, Joe. Was last year that long ago?

No? in Austin

It's worse than that.  He said it was the fourth time, with the last two between the Astros and Cardinals.  I seem to remember six games last year, but what do I know?

Nuttin', that's what... just plain ol' nuttin.  BTW - where is the constipation and hand wringing over So Taguchi owning Billy Wagner?  I guess if it's not Pujols and the opposing pitcher/closer isn't Lidge, the hype machine has nothing to say!

Without a doubt they were. I have a buddy who's a Mets fan with season tickets. At no point after April did Mets fans completely trust Wagner. He's the best they've had since the heyday of John Franco, but they still don't trust him. When he enters the game, the atmosphere at Shea noticeably tightens up.

I've finally lost complete and total interest in the NLCS (this season).  We didn't really watch last night (flipping over to check the score), but we sure as hell watched the 9th once Wagner came in.

We were SURE he was going to lose his second game of the series and end the steM season all by himself.  Oh well.  Almost.

That was a horrible confluence of events.  I was desperate to see Wagner blow a 4-run lead to sink the Mets, and terrified that the Jakes would take the pennant.

Afterwards, I had to watch "The Big Lebowski" and drink white russians just to restore some kind of normal brain activity.

Yeah, I've pretty much changed my mind about the pennant too.  I hope the steM win tonight, but only because it means the Cardinals didn't win the pennant.  I hate the steM, but hell, they won the pennant in 2000 and I barely remember it.  So, I'll get over it.

That's exactly where I am.  I wasn't around for the '86 series, so my hatred of the Stem has been learned from you guys (ably assisted by actually watching the 90's and 00's incarnations).

Of course, if the 3rds pull it off, the Astros should petition the league office to fly a championship banner (no "co" attached) as the Astros took the season series 9-7.

Either way, if Detroit don't beat either of these terribly flawed teams in 4, I'll be mightily pissed off.

It the Tigers don't sweep, the city will be burned down in a massive riot.

Of course, this will happen even if they DO sweep.

Says Wagner "What did you expect?" ..."I'm the one out there who has to live with what goes on. I'm the one who has to live with pitching crappy," he said. ..."With a one- or two-run lead, I wouldn't throw those hanging sliders."

I want the Cards to win just so the smug baseball experts will be wrong.

Also, I never get tired of spoiled New York sports fans' expectations taking a beating.

Since Alkie is "rooting" for the steM, I'm gonna root for the Cards.

Also, is anyone worried about the long layoff the Tigers have since the NLCS is going 7 games?  Is too much rest a bad thing?

I am such a Cards fan tonight, you cannot even believe it.  I hate the SteM.  At the start of the series, I hated each team equally.  But watching the games has just made me realize how much more I hate the SteM.

In this 'pick your poison' series, I'm leaning towards the Cards mainly because they're the NL Central representative.
Even though the Mets/Astros rivalry is kind of dead since we don't play them mych during the season, I still can't really want them to win anything ever again.  Even if they represent the NL in the World Series.

I'm pulling for the steM.  It's just that Pujols is so annoying and I don't want to hear about him anymore this season.  Also, I don't want to deal with BFiB's attempts at smack-talk.

Me too.  If I can;t have a rematch of Tigers/Padres, I'll settle for a rematch of Tigers/Cards.  I just hope I never have to see Astros/Tigers, because it would be painful to have to admit that with the gradual evolution of loyalites I would have to root against the Tigers.  I've already been faced with acknowledging my preference for the longhorns over the wolverines, and I don't know how much more of this I can take.

I'm with you guys.  If the steM make it to the WS, then there's always the chance that they could win it by accident.  I don't want to take that chance.  It would be annoying to listen to the BFiBs' chortling, but I think I could rationalize it as vindication of the NL Central.  With the steM, there's no possible mitigating argument (other than a NL victory, I guess).

But I just like the way the Tigers play the game.  I'll be pulling for them in the WS.

As uninspiring this series has been, Game Sevens are just flat out fun. I plan to enjoy the evening taking pleasure in whichever team loses.

And I assume it will be a very long evening, with many a pitching change.

Go Tigers.

I was bored last night and clicked over to the game, my first baseball since the Astros season ended.

I hated seeing Rolen struggle, he's A+ in my book. Loved the ninth with Wags sweating it out.

Cards tonight, Tigers win in 5.

Same here. The only time in my life I was in agreement with Pete Rose on anything was in the 1973 Bud Harrelson "fight". The combination of Dykstra, Strawberry, Knight, and the loathsome Gary Carter was enough to judge them a team of Satan.
