Watched most of the Jakes/Brew game on PIP.  Switched over in the 9th in time to hear the Pinella and the pbp guy gushing over the Cardinals.  Then, the coup de gras.
On the last out, the pbp guy reaches into the big bag of overly dramatic Jim Nantz calls and pulls this drivel:
"Welcome to baseball heaven."

WTF!!?!!!!?!?!?!?  

Come on bbg's.  Don't let that sin go unpunished.  A freaking mediocre team cratering like Rosanne Barr dropped from a great height does not get to be associated with baseball heaven.

Yeah, there full of shit in St. Louis. If they end up holding on to the Central they will soon be plastered in the playoffs.

I know it's bad form and I almost never do this; but I absolutely will not root for the Cardinals this post season.  I hope the Pads sweep them out.

Not that I needed you to validate who I do or don't root for; I'm not doing it for the ire of the Cards fans.

Fact of business is: you guys have no business in the playoffs.  

Other fact of business: neither do we.  Thanks to the Wild Card Era, we had some great baseball this week (not so much for you), but no team with 84-85 wins should EVER be in the playoffs.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The thing is, or the fact of business is, there are these pre-established guidlines that dictate who will appear in post season play. It is determined not only by the record of the teams that make the playoffs but also by the records of the teams that don't. Every team understands the criteria involved. It's an unconditional static situation that is excepted and doesn't change just because a third place team in one division has a better record than half of the teams that stumble into a playoff spot. For the sake of argument one can say that a team has no business in the playoffs, but it is an academic point that determines nothing more than an opinion. Or in short, to quote the Dude, "well, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

I remember the Kirby Puckett led Twinkies winning 85 games and taking the sorry arse AL West in 1987 (there were only two divisions in each league back then).  And nobody gave them a prayer of a chance to come out of the AL playoffs.

They did.

Then no one gave them a prayer of beating the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.  They did that too!  In seven gut wrenching games.

So just how bad were the 1987 Minnesota Twins?  Well, if you go by the Pythagorean Theory: Scored 786 runs, Allowed 806 runs. Pythagorean W-L: 79-83.

On the one hand, I completely agree with you. Even when the Cardinals were up by 8 games or whatever, I was just hanging my hat on the ole "anything can happen in the playoffs" argument.  I'm still clinging to that, I guess.  I wouldn't even argue with somebody who said the Astros would have a better shot in the postseason.  Indeed, the Cardinals may have a better shot this year because Houston isn't in the playoffs.

But on the other hand, the Cardinals finished first in the division, granted a crappy division.  To say they have no business in the playoffs is akin to saying the 04-05 Astros had no business getting in because they finished second in the division.

I wouldn't even go that far.  It could be argued that it was just a competitive division.  For example, the Cards were 7-9 against the Astros, I believe.  If the Cards would have been 14-1 and had won 7 more games, would people being saying, "oh the Cards were a great team" simply by the Astros being worse than they were?  I don't think so.

Very good point. Milwaukee and Cincinatti improved this season.  Clearly, St. Louis and Houston were considerably more talented than the rest of the division the past couple of years. Not so in 2006.

The Cardinals had a record of 52-29 within the division in 2005. Just 39-42 this season. 13 games!

It's basic math but it never ceases to amaze me that, after 162 games, 15-20 games are the difference between a great team and a mediocre team. I'm certain that you and I could look at our teams this season and easily find 15-20 games that they could have, or even should have won instead of lost. The little things really do matter.
