Alyson Footer,

Hirsh offered no explanation, bolting from the clubhouse before reporters could ask their questions. His decision not to face the music was as weak as his 54-minute effort on the mound. The Link

Justice just said on the radio that several players are refusing to talk to the media at this point.  Taveras being one name I heard mentioned but it was implied there are others.
DS Andy Wainwright: You do know there are more guns in the country than there are in the city.
DS Andy Cartwright: Everyone and their mums is packin' round here!
Nicholas Angel: Like who?
DS Andy Wainwright: Farmers.
Nicholas Angel: Who else?
DS Andy Cartwright: Farmers' mums.

That may be true, I don't know.  But I do wonder how much of that is the players refusal to talk to Pin-wheel?  The rest of the players seem to talk to Footer.

To Justice's (minor) credit, he did emphasize that Hirsh was talking to NOBODY, not just Pinwheel.

To be clear, Pinwheel could have easily been confused on an Odyssian level, and Hirsh could have granted an exclusive interview to Mr. Nobody.

If Hirsh doesn't want to talk about his terrible performance, people are bound to question more than just his effort on the mound. You got to face the music. One way or another. Footer is just telling it like it is.

Wouldn't have been too hard to spout some clich?s and platitudes:  "I didn't have my best stuff...still learning at this level...Reds have a great offense...blah, blah, blah".  Not making any hard and fast judgements on Hirsh, but the post-game dork-fest where he lets the sniffers have a whiff of his jock is part of the job.  He needs to learn that, and hopefully someone like Clemens has already made that point very clearly to him.

If he doesn't learn that quick, he's got one foot into the Tim Redding pool.

Well, I'm not going to jump on my Jump to Conclusions Mat just yet.  There could've been some other reason he couldn't stick around.

I personally think  "talking to the media" should be one of the least important things on the list of Responsibilities of Being a Major Leaguer, right next to Use a Fresh Jock Strap daily, and just below No Excessive Towel Whipping in the Shower.

If a player doesn't want to talk to the media, fine, leave that for the Managers and GManagers. Players should do their talking on the field, especially rookies.
Chuck Norris once ate three 72 oz. steaks in one hour. He spent the first 45 minutes having sex with his waitress.

There's that, and there's the can-be-best-friend-or-worst-enemey aspect floating around in the spectrum. Players always have their reasons. But they need to remember it's always a two way street, and what they say or don't say can work for or against them in relating to the public/fans. Some players have learned how to make the media their bitch (Schilling) and manipulate it to their advantage, so to speak.

Talking to the Media is possibly the second most important part of being a major leaguer.  Baseball is entertainment and that's all it is.  Without an audience it doesn't exist.  When a player doesn't talk to the Media that doesn't mean he's not talking to a particular reporter, that means he's not talking to the paying customer.  Even at minimum, these players are making a lot of money, and it's not just because they can play the game.  There is of course a distinction to be made between an honest reporter who will report accurately what you say and another who will manipulate your words for their own purposes.

Makes sense, but that's when Garner should step up and speak for Hirsh, "He's an emotional guy, he really took it hard...blah, blah

Believe it, he ain't Redding.  I think he was completely embarrassed thanks to what was likely his worst outing in his entire life and didn't handle it well.  He'll learn to deal with it better, IMO.
