Obsession with "Winning Series"
« on: August 11, 2006, 03:31:43 pm »
Usually about this time of year I expect to hear Biggio monotonously descibe how important it is to just kepp winning series.

That's expected.

However, recently, many in the Astros TV and Radio crews have been beating this topic to death.  It is almost as if they would rather have the Astros win all three series in a homestand 2 games to 1 (6-3 homestand) than sweep the Pirates and Cubs, but drop 2 of 3 to the Padres (7-2).

Winning Series is nice, but in no way is it better than winning games.

On the last road trip, after winning the first two games in SD and Arizona, I lost count how many times I heard Raymond and Dolan say something like "you've already won the series," and then follow it up with a euphemism for "so losing today is ok".

You get the impression that they think the difference  between losing a series 1-2 and winning a series 2-1 is alot bigger than the difference between winning a series 2-1 and sweeping a series.

OK, off the soap box.

I think you're the only one who gets that impression.  The idea is to win games.  If you want to nit pick some off the cuff expression about "winning series" into meaning "we can't add", then knock yourself out.  But you'd be the only one.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Seems like you're really picking nits.

I hear "winning series" and I just think they mean keep winning ballgames. And to me, losing a series kind of feels like losing momentum.

It's all relative.  Winning each series means your winning more games than your losing and winning rougly 66% of your games.  It looks like that is what it's gonna take at a minimum from here on out to take the Wild Card.

Agreed.  I just don't like it when people enter game 3 of a series and say "you've already won the series", like winning series in itself means something.

But like you said, winning series from a 10,000 foot view translates into winning games and hopefully making the postseason.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Are you sure you don't want to argue this point in to the ground, defending it with every single mis-thought and bass-ackwards point of view possible?

No?
