Anyone ever been to an Angels home game?
« on: August 04, 2006, 11:55:11 am »
I am in LA for work and meeting a friend at the game tonight.    I have heard horror stories about traffic in LA, but surely it cant be any worse than the Katy freeway during Rush hour.

Any tips on parking?

Also, other than urinating on the Rally Monkey, are there any must do's at an Angels game?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Plenty of parking at the stadium itself.  It's a pretty vanilla park.  No real standout features or food, other than the fountain in CF that shoots off when an Angel hits a homer or after they win.  Thankfully, the boomstix fad has cooled down but that frickin' rally monkey will NOT die.  And yes, traffic will suck.  There's a metro stop right at the stadium if you'd rather take the train.
60% of the time... it works everytime.

I grew up nearby in Irvine.  I-5 is bad in LA and northern Orange County, but opens up as you get close to Anaheim.  It goes from horrible to ok right there.

As far as the stadium, it's ok.  Kids go up to the top of the upper deck and watch the Disneyland fireworks around 9pm.

As usual, when visiting a stadium to which you never have been, go ahead and dole out some cash for the good seats.  IMO, you'll get a better experience.

The traffic in LA is unlike anything experienced in Houston.

However, if you pick up a hooker, you can use the HOV lane and get there faster.

How could it be any worse than sitting there parked on the freeway?

Sitting there parked on a freeway in LA for 5 hours, trying to leave the city on a Friday afternoon, watching, and I shit you not, a young girl on a 3-speed bicycle outpacing the cars for 2 of those hours.

Lay out Houston next to Houston and you have LA traffic.

And that's different from the Katy Freeway exactly how?

I don't think it's quite that bad.

As bad as the Katy Freeway is, it's not that bad. It moves, kind of like Roger up the first baseline on a grounder.

Ha!  I watched CHiPs...I know better.  People drive 120 mph on the freeways in LA.  Sometimes in reverse.

They really need to put CHiPs on DVD.

Just because it narrows down to two lanes each way right as you get close to the city? Just because the whole freeway becomes HOV at rush hour? Just because there can be a traffic jam any day of the week, any time of day, for absolutely no reason at all?

Thank the cental planners in Arlington for all of that.

Haha, nice... I was quasi-aware of that collection, but by "put CHiPs on DVD," I meant, "schedule a wide-release on DVD so that I can ultimately download it via Bit Torrents."

thanks for all the info, and CHips highlights!

Anyway, I am actually in W Covina.   I am taking 10 East to 57 South.    Any idea what I can expect inthe way of traffic around 6pm?  Are we talking about a 2 hour drive?

Pulled over for WHAT?  There's no cops on the freeways in LA.  As I understand it...if you can speed, go right ahead.

As for your 6-pack, please trust me when I tell you that "beer" is the least intoxicating thing 99% of Angelenos are on at this very moment.

Curb Your Enthusiasm!!  Just watch out for cops if you have a hooker AND the medical marijuana for your dad in the car!  I love that show.  My favorite was the one where he wrote his wife's aunt's obituary and the paper made a typo so that beloved aunt was spelled with a "c".  Hysterical.

fyi, i took 30 minutes.   I was doing 70+ for the whole way, except where 57 and 60 come together.

I really liked the stadium.   THere is something to be said, for sitting in an open air stadium, on a beautiful evening.   Clear skies and tempatures in the low 70's.

Wow.

Maybe it's just the 10 from Santa Monica to where you turn off to go to Vegas, because I literally sat on that stretch for 5 hours one Friday afternoon.

I know the 5 in either direction on a Friday is supposed to be just as bad.

The worst thing about traffic in the LA area is not how jammed up it gets - which it does on par with aywhere in the world - but how utterly unpredictable it is.  There is no such thing as rush hour or timing your trip to avoid the traffic.  You never know when you might get stuck sitting still for two hours for no apparent reason (as i did Friday on the 5 south at 10:30 am).

Thus, i have discovered two kinds of people in my year living here.  The kind of person who always allows extra time for taffic which isn't always there and consequently is often disturbingly early to things and the kind of person who assumes that just because they one got there in 20 minutes that's always how long it should take and consequently are often disturbingly late for things.  I believe the latter kind accounts for the 40% of Dodger fans who arrive after the 4th inning.
Yay.

Makes total sense to me.  Based on my previous experiences on the 405 to the 10, I woke up at 5:30am to make sure I made an 8am conference in Santa Monica.

I got to the convention center at 6:20am.  That.  Sucked.

Then of course, that afternoon was the day I literally averaged 3 MPH between SaMo at the beginning of the 10 until the point in the Valley where you turn off for Vegas.  I was supposed to be in Phoenix at 9pm.  I got there at 2am.

My favorite is the 405 North through Huntington Beach phantom traffic at 2 in the afternoon.  You get stuck in god awful traffic and never see what caused it. And that's BEFORE rush hour.
