Rosenthal's Latest
« on: July 30, 2006, 10:17:14 pm »
The Link

Astros third baseman Morgan Ensberg remains the Padres' primary trade target, but Cubs right-hander Greg Maddux could represent Plan B, FOXSports.com has learned.

The Padres' plans hinge on two unrelated scenarios ? the prognosis for right-hander Chan Ho Park, who went on the disabled list Sunday, and the Astros' pursuit of Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada.

Ensberg, currently on the DL with a bruised right shoulder, is part of the Astros' offer for Tejada, according to major-league sources.

The Astros, however, are unlikely to trade Ensberg in a lesser deal. They were not enthused by the Padres' initial offer of right-handed reliever Scott Linebrink and either infielder Mark Bellhorn or Geoff Blum ? and probably would want a more substantial regular, such as Padres shortstop Khalil Greene, in return.

I saw this.  I don't see where anything the Pads want to give us, helps us.

I can't understand how we would have any use for Geoff Blum.

Greene is as good as AE in the field and has a better bat with a lot more pop.

Yeah, Greene and Barfield at third and second and Linebrink for the pen.  They can have Burke, Lidge and Ensberg.  Sounds like a perfect match.  We can play for next year and they can play for next decade.

I don't see any fit there if the Padres aren't more serious than Bellhorn or Blum to go with Linebrink.

No he's not. The only reason the Astros would have a huge need for Greene would be of interest would be if Everett were part of the Tejada deal. Even then I think it's mostly Rosenthal speculation rather than Rosenthal basing it on any real information he has.

I just can't believe that's even a remote possibility.

Well the Baltimore Sun seems interested in topping Carroll's horrible trade rumors.

Apparently the Astros and Orioles are "discussing" a trade that would send Morgan Ensberg, Adam Everett, AND Roy Oswalt for Miguel Tejada.

Holy shit... not only is the Sun indicating that OSwalt was in the package, but that THAT WASN'T FUCKING ENOUGH FOR BALTIMORE!!!

 Ramblings of an insane newspaper.

Fortunately, they also indicate that the Astros have now pulled Oswalt off the table.  (Translation: the writer's evening dose kicked in.)

If the Astros don't trade him (Roy O), they'd better move as quickly as possible to get him signed beyond 2007. Players look at their franchises differently when news like this leaks out.

WTF??   So now Roy O is going to be pissed about some completly bogus internet trade rumor?   What next, Biggio isnt going to resign cause Howard in Memorial called 610 and said something mean?

The comments on that Justice blog made my eyes bleed.  So many stupid comments on one page, it must be a record.  The one that said his wife was in the bedroom crying was great- the thin walls in the trailer must have made it easy for him to hear her.

Both Stark and Rosenthal report Oswalt actually was offered With Everett and Ensberg.  For Tejada and no report of any other significant players coming our way.   That just makes no sense, which is why I still can't believe it to be true.

I can't believe the Astros would even consider such a deal.

The Link

Update from Jayson StarK

By late Sunday night, the Orioles had next to nothing in the works for Tejada. But if they don't trade him, it won't be because they didn't have some fascinating names thrown at them. Teams that have spoken with them say they actually discussed Roy Oswalt, Lance Berkman and Brad Lidge with the Astros, for instance. Oswalt apparently would have been viewed as the centerpiece of that deal. But because he was a year away from free agency, the Orioles then tried shopping him around to see if he (and possibly Lidge) could be spun into an even younger, bigger package.

The only thing I can think of is the Astros offered other players, and asked, what would it take to get Tejada.  This was Baltimore's reply, and the Astros said goodbye Baltimore.

Then the news gets passed around to baseball writers who are looking for juicy rumors in a somewhat mundane trade deadline season and they run with it.

According to Rosenthal, the Astros killed the deal when they found out that the Orioles had a deal to send Oswalt to the Rangers.

I can't fathom how that would make the Astros take Roy off the table if he were actually on the table. Other than some residual Nolan hangups, who the fuck cares what the Orioles would do with him once you've decided to trade him? Astros-Rangers aren't exactly Yankees-Red Sox. I've certainly never considered the Rangers "competitors" other than the six games a year I have to watch between the two teams.

Chronicle update:

Astros still want Tejada, but Oswalt is off the market.  Also, apparently that Ensberg, Roy, AE deal was never offered(thank goodness) but  oswalt did enter discussions in another offer.

Edit: according to rosenthal, the deal that angelos squashed on friday involved oswalt and tejada.  The Link

Enough.  Tell Baltimore to fuck itself.  It's pretty clear absolutely nothing is going to happen with Tejada.

Yup.  Time to either nut up and admit that our lack of offense has caught up with us and and it's just not the Astros' year, or focus on Soriano and pray that you can resign him in the offseason.  Although to be honest I don't think Soriano would be enough to put us over the top.
