Who were they talking about last night???
« on: July 20, 2006, 09:58:01 am »
During an in game discussion about the 8th inning, I came back from the fridge and JD was talking being in the clubhouse or bench and cheering on your team even if your on the DL...and then something about trading that person.  Who the heck was he talking about...another team, or the Astros?

Anybody remember hearing them talk about this?

Shea Hillenbrand.  And he has since been DFA'd.

Apparently, he had the red-ass at management and refused to suit up and sit in the dugout.
Lighten up, Francis.

The Baseball This Morning guys talked about this earlier.

Hillenbrand was designated for assignment during the game and was not in the locker room afterward. "It will do wonders for the clubhouse," manager John Gibbons said.

The six-year veteran designated hitter, who left the team last Friday, had been critical of team management, and refused to sit on the Toronto bench during a 5-2 loss on Tuesday.

The Toronto Globe and Mail reported that Hillenbrand was not included in a players-only meeting before that Wednesday night's contest.

"Yeah, I was very surprised," Hillenbrand said on the team's Web site after not being included in the lineup the night before. "They knew when I was going to be here. I should've just stayed home."

"He's been out four days (and) needs a workout in the field," said Manager John Gibbons.

Hillenbrand flew to Los Angeles after last Friday's game as he and his wife were adopting a baby and returned an hour before Tuesday's game. He was not in the lineup last night and blasted management before the game.

"This had nothing to do with him adopting a baby," said Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi, who added that the breakup was due to, "irreconcilable differences."

It had a lot to do with Hillenbrand writing: "This is a sinking ship" on the chalkboard where batting practice times are written.

The team was having a players-only meeting, called by Vernon Wells, when in stormed irate manager John Gibbons.

According to one unnamed Blue Jay: "The manager said: 'You're gone! I'll be gone before you ever play another game in this organization.'

"It was as hot as I've ever seen (Gibbons) and that includes all of his ejections."

Hillenbrand was hitting .301 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 81 games.

Baseball This Morning seems to think he'll end up with the Angels or Padres...which could blow up the rumored trade of Ensberg to the Padres for Dave Roberts or Jesse Barfield or Jesse Owens.
