Whose is this?
« on: July 19, 2006, 07:30:38 pm »
someone sent this to Pinwheel's blog

Please do not laugh at this question.. do you think with Roy Oswalt wanting to test free agency coupled with a huge demand for pitching in the trade market this season, would it be in the astros best interest to trade him for 3 or 4 top tier offensive prospects?? it appears over the past decade or so the stros have no problem developing pitchers... but a little trouble consistantly developing positional players... roy o is one of my favorite ball players.. but the astros are my favorite team, and we could seriously empty out a team's farm system with roy o dangling as trade bait... just an idea.

step up and spin the wheel.  How many times do you think he will flip his stance on this issue in the next year?  Maybe he writes to his own blog.

I don't think he distinguishes anymore between the conversations he imagines and those he has. Pinwheel's latest attempt to "contain multitudes" is that Purpura should improve the team by bringing up Pence and Hirsh, while saying on the radio that Purpura wont use the minor leaguers to make trades because he overvalues them.  Truly a dizzying intellect.

I just read my first Justice blog.  Yes, ever.

This is a rhetorical question, but...who the hell does this guy think he is?  Why do I care who his friends are within the org?  Why would I care what his thoughts are?  Why does a "journalist" passing off trade rumors from a half-assed internet blogsite as FACT (!) still have a job?

Normally, I'd just ignore this sort of thing, but I'm honestly in shock that the Chron (no matter what you think of it as a newspaper) allows this guy to put his name in their rag.

The simple answer is that he's a journalist in the same way that Mike Lamb is a 3b.  The difference is that Lamb tries to take the job seriously.  Pinwheel is looking for advancement, that is all.  The facts are for anyone to find.  He can't be bothered, it's his point of view, which changes frequently, that he's marketing.

Couple weeks ago he wrote a column slowly explaining that the Astros need to trade for a reliever.  His revelation was that they should call up Jason Hirsh.  He actually typed  "I'm surprised Purpura hasn't thought of it. (I'm getting tired of coming up with all the good ideas,..."  He thinks of himself as a madcap genius.

As for the Chronicle, it's one of the worst papers in the US.  Don't be surprised at anything they do.

No, you can see that he really believes that he is a super-genius, in the way that all of us in here are super-geniuses, but his opinion is MORE genius because he gets a paycheck from a newspaper and is "close friends" with everyone in the Astros organization.  Don't believe me?  Ask him.

In his own mind he might be friends with some in the org.  Me thinks he is on the outside with his nose pressed up against the glass.

Well, I've seen him on ESPN before as some sort of expert on Houston sports, and it just blows my mind.  This is the best we can do?

On PTI, which I otherwise like, Wilbon and Kornheiser routinely have him on as their "resident baseball expert."

I got a call from a buddy of mine in New York, asking indignantly, "who the hell is this guy and is he really the expert in Houston?" After about a minute of derisive laughing I filled him in. Needless to say, my buddy wasn't entirely surprised, though he acknowledged that the "imaginary conversation" columns were beyond anyone's ken.
"Holy shit, Mozart. Get me off this fucking thing."

I like that Pinwheel thinks he banters with the players and management as if he's one of the guys and that they respect [edit] him asking the tough questions.  My favorite part of this is that he writes about it as if he thinks he's sharing his inside jokes with his readers.  Such a tool.

Yes.  That's the problem.  I'm sure the players and management all roll their eyes when they see him coming.

I'm sorry, two hours later, I'm still just shaking my head in shock.  "MLBtraderumors.com" is a source?  Seriously?  For real?

Oh hell yes. Justice makes up imaginary conversations(sort of a reportorial teddy bear tea party) to use as source material for his typings.  Someone elses ravings are a step up.   And, what's more, you're likely to be criticized for restricting their right to speculate without the least hint of the airiest chance that whatever they post/print has the remotest possibility of even a tenuous whisp of a sidelong glance at reality.

The image that comes to my head is Cartman having the tea party in his backyard. Except Justice has his bobble heads setup instead of stuffed animals.

The thing I find most loathsome about Justice is his self-referential journalism. I was always taught to avoid the first person and self-references as much as possible in journalistic writing. Justice makes a habit of it. He thinks him and his ideas are part of the story. What's worse is that even when he thinks he's being self-deprecating, he sounds smug and self-important.

I'm always reminded of William Raspberry's embarrassing columns in which he uses the device of the "cabbie." It allows Raspberry to fictionalize his perception of "the common man" while inserting himself as a character into the column. It had never occurred to me before now that Pinwheel might be drawing from Raspberry. In other words not only are Pinwheel's columns idiotic but the self-referential device is utterly unoriginal.

Of course it's unoriginal. Hacks have been using it for years. Although I'm unfamiliar with Rasberry, I doubt he originated the idea either.

Pinwheel and Raspberry were colleagues at the Post - that's why it occurred to me that there might be a connection.

Justice isn't a journalist, he's a columnist. Columnists have no ethical guidelines. They are hired to give their opinion and stimulate interest and discussion on topics of which they are learned or have a peaked interest in.

In other words, write outrageous shit that amazes and pisses off people.

It's our fault, seeing competent sports reporting in other cities' newspapers, (thanks to the Intertubes, todays articles from Toronto for instance) had reason to expect something similar in Houston.  Instead we get a vaudeville act the equivalent of spinning plates on a stick.

I don't know. Plate spinning presumably requires a considerable amount of skill.
