I dont mean to sound like an idiot but, why Berry? Wouldnt you want someone who was a more successfull hitter?

Um, no. That's like saying you would only want an oncologist who had had cancer. He's been a minor league hitting coach and the Astros minor league hitting coordinator. Often the talented practitioners don't always make the best teachers.

And whatever happened to TGBS as a coach at some point? Shoot. He must enjoy watching his kids grow up or something.

Maybe he knows exactly what to do.....but physically as a player, he couldn't do it?  Look around the league at the hitting coaches; I'd say give him a chance.

I also found  this interesting.

Quote:

Minor League hitting coordinator Sean Berry, who late Wednesday replaced Gary Gaetti as the Astros' hitting coach, spent much of the first half of the season working on a system that teaches prospects how to take better approaches.

This "system" intrigues me. If nothing else, it shows that he's not just trying to coast on his looks.

I guess the Count did.  He said if the Astros didn't hit the All-Star break in stride, heads were gonna roll.  The Rat may be just the first.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

No.  But I like it.  When Gaetti cited Jason Alfaro as an up and coming prospect I became a bit suspicious.

Probably gonna sound cornball, but this is an interesting move to me from a motivational standpoint.  They aren't settling for anything this year, taking anything for granted that this team will just automatically light fire late as it's done the last two years.  Maybe this kind of serious move...."you clowns cost a good man his job!"...could wake them up when nothing else has consistently this year.

I'm presuming these guys like Gary a lot and that they'll hurt for him....for a half hour or so.  All kidding aside, the players on this team strike me as a little better on average than that, but they're also probably wondering amongst themselves "who's next?"

Good night to all, and a great day of reading posts here for me.  Thank you.

absolutely not. often the best hitters make the worst coaches. they do not know how they did it and cannot teach fundamentals; they just saw the ball and hit it.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Does anyone see this as an indictment of Gaetti and not just a situation where they want to put the players, who they can't fire, on notice?

Berry may be more effective, at least for a while.  It just seems this is the way things play out for hitting coaches, pitching coaches, managers etc...

Garner is complaining about approach.  Purpura says that Gaetti helped Lamb, and Ausmus said Gaetti was a help to him. Gaetti might not want that endorsement on his resume.  But how is any hitting coach going to influence lunk heads like Ensberg and Taveras?

Timmy P was just on 610 and gave some insight on the Gaetti firing.  He said that he wanted a change in hitting philosophy for the team.  I don?t think he went in to much detail on that, but he also said that the organization had just spent a ton of money on new video equipment for the team.  He felt that Sean Berry would be able to better utilize that equipment because he was using it for the minor leaguers.

It sounds like to me that Timmy like Gaetti, but Berry was doing such a good job with the minor leaguers, plus he fit the direction the organization wants to go in as far as using video technology and hitting philosophy, that he was a better fit for the team.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Consider this...

What I remember best about Sean Berry is that he was a total gamer...

He also played a season at 3rd with a very painful shoulder injury and remained at least somewhat productive....

He might be able to get through to Morgan...

I never read that part!  Actually, when I went to the link, I went to "F" in the glossary, and couldn't find it.

I guess I get an "F" for reading comprehension, too, eh boys?

I guess I was thinking of more of a Gwynn or Mattingly type as a coach.

And even though Gaetti was a very good hitter, anybody that played the Twins in the original RBI baseball knows his approach was poor at the plate, very all or nothing .   Bottom line is that assistant coaches, whether it be baseball or football, whose side produces nothing but poor results are likely to be fired.  Whether it be because they are bad coaches or management is just looking for someone else to shape up bad hitters/offensive talent is another story, but it shouldn't come as a surprise looking at the offensive production.
