Jim!  I'm surprised at you.  Clearly this has nothing to do with Trevor "choking" ... just as Lidge's recent problems are not the result of his choking ...

It's all Garner's fault!!!  Don't you see the pattern?  Pay attention, man!  Garner just can't close out the big ones.  We gotta let him go and promote Jackie Moore.  He's running away with everything at AAA ... no reason not to let him try the next level.

You wanna hear the funny one?  At a Cards board, which I frequent, they are absolutely livid at Phil Garner, pinning this loss entirely on him.  This is the same bunch who blamed their getting swept in the 2004 World Series on Roger Clemens.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Mark called me in the 9th and said: "I've got it figured out--its Garner." looks like y'all think alike.

Hell I thought Garner looked great on the mound trying to close out the game.

Nothing to do with the Cards hitters going 0-4 tonight.

For one thing, Rolen would have caught that ball that Cabrera missed.  You know, all Cardinal players are Gods.

no it's Garner's fault because he didn't make a defensive replacement at third with Scott Rolen.

His mechanics were all out of whack.  He may be trying to play hurt.  Or perhaps it was the poison that Garner poured into the Gatorade finally taking effect (all part of his master plan to thin out the NL competition).

Of course not.  The loss was 100% entirely on the shoulders of Phil Garner.  As evidence of his total incompetence, they offer up the stolen bases by Soriano and Beltran.

The funniest one was their blaming Garner for not positioning Cabrera correctly when guarding the line.  A good coach would have had the thirdbaseman *just* far enough over to make that play.

C'mon. A *good* coach ALWAYS makes the play. Garner choked too. How dare he bring in one of the best closers of all time to pitch the ninth?

They are classic.  Nothing about the Houston Astros is good.  The train is stupid, the Crawford Boxes are stupid.  Garner, is obviously a walking idiot.  The fans don't know anything about baseball.  (And I honestly hope no one ever shares this site with a Cards fan.)  The roof is stupid.  The food is bad, with the exception of build a burrito.

Card fans just need to shut up and watch the games.

I bet Rolen could have gotten the save.

I tell ya, I am simply gobsmacked by the Cardinal fans tonight.  I used to have a tremendous amount of respect for them, but that went out the window tonight.  They make Cub fans look like Rhodes Scholars.

I was think about adding that he should have brought in Rolen, but I figured it was too obvious for publication.

Of course, Eckstein's scrappiness should have counteracted everything.

So, I should say that Pujols should stand there and watch his homeruns instead of running hard like Rolen does?

Don't forget not putting in Nomar, who leads the league in hitting, in the ninth when all the NL needed was a base hit.

Actually I'm a Cards fan and I blame Pujols for the loss. Let me explain: Albert crushes three run homer off Lidge in NLCS last year. Lidge has gone all "Donnie Moore" since. Lidge's manager was and is Phil Garner. Garner has gone all "Gene Mauch" ever since the Pujols homer. Every late inning move he makes backfires lately. Garner managed the NL in the All Star Game.  Ta Da!

But seriously, to blame Garner for the loss is silly.

They must be paying a lot of attention to resident ESPN assclown John Kruk because Pigpen called out Phil Garner for running Cabrera out to third and stated unequivocally that Rolen would've made that play.

The same John Kruk who commented during the HR Derby that RH is Berkman's power side?  Astute commentator, that man.

And please, save the "Pigpen" handle for Biggio.  Kruk is "Fatty", or alternatively, "Fat Bastard".  I think he ate Harold Reynolds.

Kruk must have sent out the talking points via fax because that is the line every Jakes fan I know has been using.  Apparently if Garner fielded an all-cardinals team the NL would have won 37-0.  Also, Tony LaGenius would have found a way to win (despite the fact that he couldn't win last year).

I understand he's strictly a non-alcoholic beverage drinker now.  Perhaps that is part of the problem?

I once saw Kruk drink three full pitchers of beer in a row - BOOM BOOM BOOM, just like that - and then get up and walk across the apartment in a more-or-less straight line, going after a fourth.

Like Scott's no-hitter or Burke's 18th inning blast, its a baseball feat I will never forget.

That may be so.  Kruk's role, as I see it, isn't to blow us away with astute baseball commentary.  He's supposed to be a doofus who makes viewers laugh.  In this instance, however, he isn't totally off base.

I was worried about you for a minute Frankie.  Cabrera is out there to do a job, he didn't get to hard hit ground ball because the team was playing for the win.  That means guard the line.  That other team won means you tip the cap at them for being better that day.

And since this has turned from being an exhibition into a meaniful game, then shame on the previous managers (LaRussa included) for failing to wake up to that fact before Garner.  At least the chance for a win was there for the NL and that is all you can ask for.  Having Trevor Hoffman on the mound with two outs is not a bad thing.  The other team had good approaches with Glaus and especially Young.  Tip the cap, Michael Young was outstanding the way he handled a premiere closer.

I'm still mad that Biggio didn't make the team, with his good first-half numbers at age 40.

David Eckstein? Gimme a break. Like we need more Co-ards on the (St. Louis/New York) All Star team.

Why couldn't Garner have added some of his own players like Guillen?

Because he hates them and wants them to cry.  Did you not see all the quotes from Garner about how difficult it was to choose and how he was focused on winning more than anything else?

Not that it's the overriding criteria but Uggla and Utley deserved to be on the team more that Craig. As much as I'd liked to have seen Biggio on the squad this year, I didn't like it when McKeon put Larkin on the team in 2004, so it would be hypocritical to suggest Biggio should have beaten out the "U" bros.
