They'll looooove his attitude in STL.

I must be missing something... those stats show a guy who dominates our best hitters.

Nevertheless, my reaction was:

We're DOOOOOOOOOOMED!
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

This won't last long.  Weaver has looked like complete dogshit this year.  When he was consistent he would give up 5 runs a game.

Came as a surprise to Cardinals watchers The Link Not only Weaver commentary prior to the deal, but a decent round up of what's out there.  The Cardinals, prior to trading for Weaver, were, maybe still are, interested in a hitter. Notice how the St. Louis writer manages to complete a column without reference to imaginary friends.  (Admittedly, he loses points for the vorp arrangement of letters.)

Or crazy like a fox?  Jocketty has been looking for a hitter, John Donovan says "someone he can stick in left field".  The Link Yet, he goes and trades a AA outfielder that has been sifting in the Cards minors for 4 years for a Weaver who had been DA.

Here's the tricky part, Mulder is back in a couple weeks.  Suddenly they have an extra pitcher.  Not a good pitcher but, considering the number of teams looking for pitching and what is likely to be available at the deadline, an extra pitcher.  What's the chance he'll get somebody (The Reds?) to do something stupid?

The Cards have more experienced, well known pitchers.  However, these same pitchers are either Free Agents (Mulder and Marquis) at the end of the season or reknowned "head cases" or simply inconsistant (Ponson and Weaver).  They could make Reyes available in a trade.  If they choose to do that, they are choosing to sacrifice their future for this season.  I don't see Jocketty doing that but that is just my opinion.

This is where the Astros wealth of young pitching could pay off.  The Astros have Wandy (who's not done much to improve his trade value lately), Buchholtz, Hirsh, Nieve, and a one or two further down the ladder who are highly projected.  Do I endorse, encourage, or demand the Astros do something, anything, to improve their chances?  No, I think they have enough players bottoming out right now that they can't help but get better.  Ensberg is not as bad as he is right now.  Nor is Lane, although he's not that much better.  Ausmus has been scuffling for nearly 2 weeks.  All 3 should improve, before the end of the season.  Given Purpura's approach last year (standing pat), it's likely the approach we'll see again.  Unless a deal falls into their laps that doesn't cost them too much talent.

The only risk is whether Lance, Lamb, Wilson, Burke, or someone else drops off significantly.

Lance- no drop off- this is what he is ytd at this stage in his career I think.

Lamb- Yes- he will drop off some from what he did the past month and a half- but his overall season stats are probably more or less in line with what we could expect.

Burke- not going so great that a dropoff would be a huge problem- plus if Lane improves, as you project- than this is more or less irrelevant

Wilson- Again-  I think he's going to fall off from the last month and a half, but only to about what he is for the season- he is what he is a .280ish hitter who k's a lot and drives in runs by the bunches with a little pop (I think- that's been mia though I guess).

Bidge is what he is as well, and his production ytd is about what I'd pencil him in for.

So, I'd say that Moberg can get better, Lane can get better, Ausmus and Everett are ytd about what I'd expect from them (.240 ish), Lamb and Wilson will cool down from their recent torrid play but probably be able to more or less equalize what they have done year to date.

I think that the stros offense will get better absent any injury from Berkman.
