Smoltz open to trade
« on: June 21, 2006, 12:19:29 pm »
"If the tumble in the standings changes the Braves' focus in the trade market from buyers to sellers, Smoltz said, 'I'm open to whatever is best for the team.'"

The Link

I don't recall ever hearing a comment like this... seems odd that a player would want what is best for the team, when that meant he would no longer be a part of the franchise...
"Ground ball right side, they're not gonna be able to turn two OR ARE THEY, THROW, IS IN TIME!!! WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TURN BY BRUNTLETT AND EVERETT, AND THEY CUT DOWN MABRY TO END THE GAME, AND THE ASTROS LEAD THIS NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES THREE GAMES TO ONE!!!!!"

Crap.  What am I going to do with my Ensberg jersey now?

Boy, that would be sweet.  Have the Braves given up on their Jason Lane (Ryan Langerhans)?  I wouldn't mind seeing him in brick red, maybe a trip back home would do him good.

Throw in Willy T and Burke for the Astros, and Andruw from the Braves.

the team needs Burke for the 2010 season when Biggio retires.

i'm keeping Willy T.

i'm not proposing that trade. i have closed it; it is done.

There are a lot of players I would promptly cease to hate if they put on an Astros uniform.

Can you imagine what the Astros would look like with those two guys added? It would almost be like 1998 all over again. With better results, hopefully.

Ahhhhhhhhh, but it actually would be best for the team in the long run as he'll turn around and sign with them (ATL) in the offseason as a FAgent.

SMoltz's contract runs through next year, when he'll make $8m. Didn't Harold Baines do that two or three times, though? Or am I thinking of someone else?

As long as we are suggesting wacky trades with ATL how about

Ensberg, Wily, 2 of the three kids in the rotation (tb/wandy/nieve and one AAA pitcher of the ATL's choosing) for Jones, Jones and Smoltz.  Too much or too little for the stros?

I'd say the stros would have a strong chance to win the WS this year but that's a lot of money and a lot of young talent gone.

ESPN says Tejada is being shopped again.  I'd REALLY like to see the Astros revisit that deal, but with Nieve or Hirsh as the center in Lidge's stead.

Yep, but the problem with the Tejada deal, which IIRC someone whom we all worship (sorry Jim, not trying to pick on you.  Just noting the absurdity that you are worshipped here.) pointed out, had more to do with Tejada not waiving his right to demand a trade after the season then any other potential issue.  No point in giving up the talent to land Tejada if he's going to demand his way out of town.

Trade speculation is heating up, which means it's just about time for me to make an ass of myself.  I'm doing my best to stay on the wagon from making wild ass internet trade suggestions.

Absolutely, I would only consider Tejada or Abreu if they would waive their right to demand a trade.  But they aren't exactly in the twilights of their careers.

I would do backflips to get Miguel Cabrera, but the Marlins are coming together quickly.  (This just in: Joe Girardi is going to be a helluva manager.)

Well, Carlos Lee is out there, supposedly.  But that's teetering awfully close to falling off the wagon for me.  He's a hell of a hitter though.  The Astros could shift Wilson to RF.  I just can't get over the within-division trade scenario, unless it involves the Pirates.

You planning to get an extension with him before that trade?  Keep in mind, he'll get $10-11M per year.

Yep.  Noted in my "...that's teetering awfully close to falling off the wagon for me." comment.  There's no silver bullet readily apparent.  Purpura will prove his worth by the deal he does or doesn't do, as usual.  I don't envy the man.

There is a shitstorm here (as big of one as baseball can muster around these parts) regarding those Crawford trade rumors. The mediots here are hammering Freidman because he hasn't announced that Crawford is off-limits. I don't blame the Rays for asking the world for him though, because from their perspective, he's worth it. I think it would be a PR disaster for the team to trade him, but if the Astros could get him, I could live with that.

I think that's a game in Vegas now.  It is a lot of fun.  When he's in a slump, he changes it at every at bat, and when he really struggles (which he is now) he changes his stance at every pitch.  Before long he'll be  batting left-handed or possibly trying to sneak in an aluminum bat (not that they helped Rice).

There's every likelihood that his batting behavior will morph into something unrelated to baseball. It could move beyond a "stance".  Possibly he will bring a game of Twister into the box, or while standing in, treat the pitcher to his rendition of the "Itsy Bitsy Spider".  (He was injured during the WS, he's injured now.)

Real serious about it too.  With that wide eyed look he has, staring at the pitcher.  It would not be any less effective than what he did in his second ab last night.
