Uncomfortable names (non-bb)
« on: June 20, 2006, 11:24:49 am »
I only post this cause I heard about this story today.  It is about Lance Armstrong calling for the resignation of the head of the Anti-doping Agency.
The guy's name is  Dick Pound .

I am sorry if your last name is Pound, go by Richard... please?

My absolute favorite awful name is Dick Trickle. I think I even have one of his trading cards somewhere. Is he still racing?

From the world of horse racing (different from human names I know, but...) the best name I ever encountered was Daddy Don't.

It's been at least four years since I first heard the name, and I haven't thought of an explanation for it that doesn't imply something illegal and completely morally reprehensible.

Maybe I need to get my mind out of the gutter...

On the horse racing side I am sure you have all heard the call of Hoof Hearted.  When they call the race it is priceless.

On the Doctor side, when my wife was giving birth to our first, one of the doctors (think his was anesthesia) was named Dr. Doctor.  Mild snicker at that, but not really uncomfortable.

I was in a band called Buster Hymen and the Bloody Rubbers, but we changed the name after a few weeks. Then there is the great jazz piano player Dick Hyman. My favorite baseball names come courtesy of the KC Royals: Pete LaCock and Dick Houser.

Okay, so my sister-in-law worked in the attendance office of a middle school in which a certain supposed minority were the overwhelming majority and she says she would see some pretty off-the-wall names sometimes, but said this one took the cake:  Shithead (I forgot his last name).  She says she showed it to another girl in the office and said it must be a practical joke.  The other girl says that it's no joke, that the kid's name is really Shithead but it is prounounced [sha-theed'].  Now that is just plain wrong.

I've been hearing that one for nearly 20 years now, yet no one has ever been able to document a kid named Shithead.  I think this is one of them urban legends.

You can remove the non-bb from this subject, as the Houston Astros are actually mentioned on this page.

This doesn't surprise me that they really were playing a joke on her because she is maybe the most gullible person I know.  I love snopes.  Lots of interesting info on there.

I had a classmate from elementary through high school named Richard Head.  His parents must have been on acid.  They went to great pains to let all his friends know his name was RICHARD, and that he should never be referred to by any abbreviation or diminutive of such.

Like that worked.  Funny thing was, he was kind of a di-, I mean Richard-Head, too.

Baseball has had some interesting names, I guess I remember Dick Pole first every time this comes up.  And it may not be appropriate to say -- he died young and somewhat tragically -- but hell, it's been 40 years by now... former Angels hurler  Dick Wantz.  Or, as listed on the roster -- Wantz, Dick.

One of my journalism professors did an article in the Chicago Sun-Times many many years ago about people who name their children "unusual" names.  Don't remember all of them, but there was a guy named "Odor" who was constantly in and out of jail for robbery and assault.  There was also a family with 3 children who were named, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Peter Cottontail.  Flopsy and Mopsy were both hookers and drug addicts; Peter Cottontail was in trouble for tax evasion...

The moral of the story:  your child's name is not a joke.  If you think it is, do yourself a favor and cut those nuts off right now.

The book Freakanomics has a portion about child names and tracing socio-economic status with the popularity of various names. One of the side anecdotes was a guy in Harlem naming his son Winner, hoping it would help the kid escape the hood. He then had another son, who he named Loser just to see what would happen. Winner grew up to be a typical hood involved in gangs and drugs, in and out of prison. Loser, who never shied away from his name, is now a seargent in the NYPD with a nice family and escaped the hood. While he never asked to be called anything but his name, all his colleagues call him "Lou" for fear of pissing him off.

Edited to add the following disclaimer: The above might not be exact as I haven't read the book, but that's how it was told to me by someone who had. Or at least someone who pretended to read it.

That would be facinating to read.  However, would the conclusion be concrete enough to find fault in those who dare to be a bit different.  Case in point would be the legendary Texan, Miss Ima Hogg.  She was named after a person in a Civil War poem that was a favorite of her father: Governor James Hogg.  There used to be a joke that was very popular that Ima Hogg was actually a twin, but her sister, Ura, died at birth.  I used to laugh at that joke too.

But knowing what I know now about the woman and her desire to give back to Texas as much as she did, it's not very funny at all.  But it takes quite a person of character and integrity to not allow a name that could be misused by others to set a person back.  Miss Ima was truly a unique person and it would almost be ashamed to think she could have any other name come to think of it.

Ima Hogg?  Damn straight!

I have read the book and that is pretty acurate.  That is just an intro story into his research at debunking the myth that names predestine us to life choices.  He spends much more time talking about how names are actually a reflection of socio economic position and those forces have much more impact on us than our names.
Always ready to go to a game.

where did you go to school?  We also had a Richard Head.  We also had a Mike Hunt.

Yeah I went to that school to, we also had an Ophelia Titzup, an Amanda Huggankiz, an Anita Mann, a Dicky Cox, a Dixon Butz, a Peter Everhardt, a Musty Chopadikov, and a Harry Balzach. Tube Bar High, the good ol' school days.

Edited to add: Hal Jalikakik and Phill Mipenez.

One of my favorite authors is Phil Dick.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I always liked Rusty Kuntz. I remember running across his baseball card as a kid, and had no idea his last name was pronounced K-oo-ntz.
