the team as of 6/15
« on: June 15, 2006, 12:58:18 pm »
starting to get on a roll again. getting ready to add Clemens and perhaps Backe. getting timely hitting from Wilson, Lamb and others. watching Berkman be outstanding. getting an intelligent hitting approach from Burke and surprisingly good CF play. seeing the bullpen start to shut down games. getting major contributions from kid pitchers and T. Miller. playing solid defense. having a solid bench with valuable, contributing spare parts. knowing that Biggio will never get old. having one of the best managers in MLB in the dugout.

it points out yet again, for those frontrunners who need it, how lucky this franchise has been to be under a stay-the-course GM style under GH and TP. if management decides to make a deal, it has players to trade and flexibilty to deal without wrecking the team.

the rest of the season will be fun.

I agree wholeheartedly espcially on Burke.  Wonderful catch on Tal's hill on Sunday.

Has the team made any statements on Backe's return?

Are you kidding?  Last year on June 15 we were a half game  up on Cincinnati.

"Backe will likely make three Minor League rehab starts after his next simulated game, which puts him on schedule to rejoin the Astros just after the All-Star break."

All true jim, all true.  I still don't know that this is a playoff team but having pettite pitch like the pettite of old instead of that alien that was in his body for the first two months has been fun.

Love watching Oswalt compete.  It's fun watching the kids, and I love bidge as a player- never gets old.  This team looks completely different from the one that the Reds gave the broom to after a disastrous 11 game trip.

I like the astros and realize that we as fans are lucky to support such a solid organization.  I think that the future is pretty bright with the way the kids have shown at times that they can dominate.

I'm concerned about Ensberg.  His shoulder is causing problems and I wonder how long it will take before it doesn't affect him.  Berkman took a while to get back from the knee problem, he was a pop up machine for a few games.  Mike Lamb has been excellent contributing to the offense.  The Astros have deftly worked around his liability, Garner had Bruntlett at 3rd for Pettitte's start.

You guys are nuts.  I and I suck.  It's all downhill from here.

Garner paying attention to how he uses the bullpen, getting the top 3 regular work, has also helped.

G... I don't think it was *that* disatrous. They didn't exactly get clobbered in those losses (most of them, anyway), and they've managed to already put it behind them. I think it was a typical rough spot in a marathon season.

Agree on Oswalt. Win or lose, big game or not, Roy O is by far my favorite pitcher to watch since probably Nolan. I love his demeanor and intensity. I did, however, hold my breath when he was legging out that IF single last night. All we need is to see the team's ace pull a hammy.

I think we could reasonably expect the bullpen (especially Lidge) to get better.  Wheeler will have a better second half, and Qualls continues to be solid.  On the starters, Pettitte will pitch better, Clemens will be solid, but I'm very wary of counting on Backe.  I hope I'm wrong.

On offense, I'm still nervous.  Berkman is the key, obviously, but Ensberg is essential.  Lamb and Ausmus will slow down.  Wilson, despite his horrific ups and downs, will dependably provide what he has always done.  Biggio has usually declined in the seond half, unless I'm mistaken.

On Lane, Burke/Taveras I don't know what to expect.
