Dell Diamond = Best minor league park in the country
« on: June 13, 2006, 12:52:39 pm »
According to  minorleaguenews.com. Among their criteria:

Quote:

  • Does the game-day experience leave the fans well-treated and entertained?

  • Is the ballpark attractive and feature facilities which enhance the fans' enjoyment of the game

  • Do all of the ballpark bells and whistles that generate a great game-day experience deliver impressive attendance numbers?

I've never actually been to the Dell, but I don't think I've ever heard a negative word it.

No other TX park in the top 10, but Dr. Pepper Ballpark (home of Frisco Roughriders) and LaGrave Field (home of the Ft. Worth Cats) each get honorable mention. Also of note is that only one ballpark built before 1998 made the top 10: FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, PA is in at #2. That's impressive for an old fogey like that to beat out some of the young whipper snappers.

The ballpark in Durham, NC is fabulous.  It's the nicest minor league stadium I've ever seen.

I've probably mentioned this before, but the bull sign wasn't at the old park before the movie.  It was built as a prop specifically for that scene in the movie.

I had a friend that I played Denial League with years later who played at NC State during the filming of the movie and they got to play a lot of the extras and opposing team players.  Great stories.  Apparently that was one crazy movie set.

Speaking of Dell Diamond, is it difficult to get tickets to a game?  My sister lives in Pflugerville and we were thinking of catching a game sometime this summer.  Is this something that will take planning ahead for tickets, or can we just walk up and buy them at the gate?

You can usually just walk up, but if you know when you'll be going, I recommend buying in advance.  The website is a pretty good one; its features allow you to see exactly which seats are available in each section and gives an example view from each section too.  If you walk up, you might get stuck out on the berm, but that isn't exactly a bad thing.

The berm seats are not bad, but their seating is first-come first-serve, so you'll want to make sure to pick out a spot no later than 20 minutes before the first pitch.

I like the new home run porch.  Same view as the berm, shaded, actual seats, only $1/seat more than general admission, and you don't have little kids running all around you for two hours.

Reading is the No. 2 minor league park in the country?? Wow. I saw a game there last summer, and it seemed pretty average to me -- not bad in any way, but nothing really stood out, either.

I'm with jasonact - I've never heard a bad word about Dell Diamond. Bricktown is a beautiful park; if the atmosphere for minor league games is as good as it is for the Big 12 Tournament, then it's a heck of a place.

I especially like "the blue monster" in LF.  And it's another "old fogey" approaching 10.  ... But the Dell is close (if not actually better).

I like the DBAP better than Dell, if for no other reason than you're not staring at a gigantic turd outside of the outfield wall.

Thinking the same thing when I read this thread.   I haven't been to a lot of minor league games other places, but I can't see how they could be any better.   If only the Astros played there . . .

Isn't Rosenblatt a minor league park for the Omaha Royals? I'm sure the atmosphere for their games isn't what it is for the CWS, but that's a special place.

You've been to the one in Durham, how about the one in Kannapolis? I lived there summer 1995, shortly after it was built (they put a clock tower in, but forgot to put arms on the clock, IIRC). I think it was AA for the Phillies at the time. Looked really nice from the outside (and via a peek inside), but I never made it out to a game. Only been to one minor league game, and that was in Round Rock, when it was AA. I think they were playing LA's team from San Antonio. I just remember Lugo was on the squad, and Michael N was at the game with me, and had mixed things to say about Lugo.

Good time.

Went to a college game up there at the same ballpark, too. USC vs. someone... gruesome experience on-field, though, as the 3B and RF collided and you could hear a bone (femur?) snap. That side of the field (I was 3rd row back on the 3B side) was feckin' COLD in the shade, and then blazing hot when the sun game out. Not so good of a time.

Never went to a game in Kannapolis, but I used to go to the old War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro with a friend of mine.  Now THAT is an old time ballpark.  Beers were a dollar I think.  Went to many games of the Carolina Mudcats in Zebulon too.  That looked like a high school field, with no covering of any kind and only metal bleachers.  The old park in Durham was interesting too.  By the time I got there, it was pretty well shot to hell, but it had a lot of history.  I played there many times in Denial League, and it was kinda cool to think of all the great players who had played on that field.

The park in Memphis is nice.  Pretty cool downtown atmosphere...walking distance from Beale Street.

The park in Knoxville sucks.  My a low-grade high school park with more seating.

Isotopes Park in Albuquerque is a great facility.  Sunset with the Sandia Mountains in the background makes it an awesome place to catch a game.  Can't wait to see Hirsh tonight.  Hopefully the altitude won't kill his breaking ball.

Memphis is really nice ... caught the Express there last year.

The new stadium in Greenville, SC (Red Sox AA squad) is also nice.

Its a great park, but it gets hot as hell over there.  One of the few times I go to a ballgame and drink bottled water.

I rate AT&T Bricktown Ballpark slightly ahead of the Dell Diamond. They're both really nice stadiums but one is located in the boonies with nothing around it, the other is located in the heart of downtown OkC's entertainment district... wait...nevermind... they're the same.

Dowtown Okie City isn't that bad.  There are a few cool places in Bricktown.  Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse is pretty damn good, though expensive.

We stayed in OKC the night before the Texas-Ok State game last fall and I enjoyed it. There were a couple of pretty good bars (got to see Barry Sanders at one of them), as well as a Mexican joint that wasn't bad. Then again Toby Keith's restaurant is there, too, so it has that going against it.

Yeah, I was kidding--my anti OU bias coming to the forefront while typing. Downtown OKC  really has come along way. It's a pretty nice place to visit. I lived in OKC in the late 70s and early 80s and there was nothing but vacant rotting brick buildings in that area then... and a U-Haul place.
