I just don't understand

- why Garner took out Oswalt after 6 knowing how overworked the bullpen is
- why anyone would pitch to Pujols with the game on the line and an open base

That Pujols guy...you know, he's not a bad hitter.  Who is he?  Where did he come from?  I'm guessing if he keeps hitting like this the rest of the league might start to catch on.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

So, why did they pull Oswalt?

uh, ok. I didn't watch the game, all I've read is that he was pulled for a pinch hitter. What was his pitch count?
(pitch count was 91) Uh, anyone??

Oswalt looked pretty much gassed as he walked off the mound in the 6th.  This isn't on Garner.  The bullpen failed.  First Trever Miller not getting out the lefty after having him down 0-2, then Qualls throwing a fat pitch at 2-0 to Pujols.

By the way, two more batters reached after Pujols homered. Not to speculate in a meaningless reconstruction of the seventh inning, but putting Pujols on may not have preserved the tie.

My understanding is that only first can be considered open... where a walk would not advance the runner(s).

Revert gets quite a bit of the blame for his inability to get John Rodriguez out after having him down 0-2... and for not throwing a fastball to him on 3-2. The Astros offense is the bigger reason for the loss. Marquis was wild and hittable for most of his 7 innings.

Of COURSE the bullpen failed.  They've pitched in 15 innings over the last 2 days.  Why try to squeeze out another 3 unless it's absolutely, completely necessary.  I'll take a slightly gassed oswalt over a very gassed bullpen any day...

Losing a game 3 to 1 is more a failure of the hitters and not the pitchers. And as far as homers go, that's as cheap of a homer as you're gonna get with Pooholes... barely made it out. It was a long pop fly. Counts the same, though.

In Miller's defense, he got shafted by the home plate ump on what should've been a called third strike to end the inning with Pujols in the on-deck circle. Terrible noncall.

Ausmus went out for a chat when Revert shook off the fastball sign(s). I thought for sure that Ausmus was going out to tell him to throw the fastball, but I guess Revert convinced him to go with that shitty, no chance, throw away, hasn't-fooled-the-hitter-for-the-last-three-pitches breaking ball. The most puzzling thing about it was he didn't even appear to try to throw it for a strike.

Regardless, just walk Pujols Rolen has struggled all year knocking runners in. He had a similar situation Sunday in San Diego. They walked Pujols to load the bases with only 1 out and Rolen grounded in to a inning ending double play. Just walk Pujols every single time- It'll frustrate the hell out of him if he never gets the opportunity to hit!

And Miller had to get that ball over the plate to avoid Pujols coming up and I don't understand why he decided to throw soft shit instead of come in with the heater (He did however get screwed on the 1-2 pitch that was right down the plate!!!)

Qualls missed his location.  Does he have to apologize for that?  Or just concede he's unqualified to pitch to Pujols and walk him when he faces him from this point forward?  Or are you questioning the managers decision to challenge Pujols instead of pitching around him?  For that, you'll have to ask Garner yourself.  I'm betting he tells you to fuck off.

as he should. every pitch Qualls threw was belt high or higher. maybe it was too much recent work combined with Wheeler's recent ineffectiveness; regardless, the decision to pitch to Pujols was correct with first base occupied. the pitching was ineffective, but the real problem with this team is--surprise--offense. Wilson is coming around but Lane is a void that Super Burke cannot fill.

equally mind boggling: he thinks Qualls was trying to "pitch around him."

All you had to do was listen to the game, Deshaies says, "they've been pitching him in" ball one up and in, "he can hit anything, have to make him aware of both sides of the plate", ball two away, "that was intended to be in, got too much of the plate", homerun.

Oswalt, hammy.

The real puzzler for me, why not go ahead and put Pooholes on after 2-0?????

Qualls missed his location.  Does he have to apologize for that?  Or just concede he's unqualified to pitch to Pujols and walk him when he faces him from this point forward?  Or are you questioning the managers decision to challenge Pujols instead of pitching around him?  For that, you'll have to ask Garner yourself.  I'm betting he tells you to fuck off.

See The Link Also, Qualls is concerned about throwing 3 days in a row.

That's valid but who else is available (or more rested) after an 18 inning game followed by a 10 inning game?  This game was tight, and the offense didn't get much going again.  I don't know if the problem is 1 (Lane) or more players or how it will be fixed.  The bullpen is having issues as well, whether that is due to overuse or combination of overuse and inconsistant performances from the relievers.

Miller's comments skirt awfully close to questioning Garner's decision to pitch to Pujols.  By no means am I certain this is what he meant but if I were Miller, having not performed too terribly well lately, I'd zip it and avoid any possible finger pointing.  Fuck his 2-2 "I thought it was a strike" b.s.  He had one more opportunity and he didn't get it done then either.  I'm not faulting the performance, he's human, but spare us the side commentary of "I hope we learned our lesson".

I hesitated to post that because it appeared in the Chronicle.  They are notorious for trying to find trouble where there is none.  I'm not sure I'm developing an opinion from these quotes, but I'm starting to.

the 0-2 pitch was a strike, but that was the only one close enough to complain about, imo. he should have challenged JR instead of pitching him so carefully.

i did not like Qualls' comments either. if your arm hurts, tell someone before entering the game.

"We threw the ball over the freaking middle of the plate," said an agitated Phil Garner. "End of conversation."

That's what happens when you try to throw around the best hitter in baseball. He's not going to chase.

So, you're thinking that's where Qualls intended the ball to go?

No. I'm sure we was going for up and in.
My point is, pitching to Pujols in that situation is more of a risk than pitching to Rolen with the bases loaded.

That's how good Pujols is right now.

"So, why did they pull Oswalt?"

"because garner is a dumbass"

Nope I like this one better.  If Garner had your little glass ball maybe he could make all of the correct calls.  Give the man a break, he has proceeded to bring this team back from the dead not once but twice.  I guess you forgot what bad management was like. (see Williams, Jimy)

Even more reason to put him on after 2-0. Oswalt struck Pujols out on the riding fastball high and tight.
Qualls apparently (from what you said) cannot make that pitch. So maybe Qualls style of pitching is more suited for Rolen.

On Qualls, agreed.  At first glance, it also wreaked of excuse making.  But I go back to he source.  JDJO spews too much horseshit for me to take those quotes as is without understanding the context of the comments.

What I did find semi-amusing (more for it's ass-holish tone) was this statement:

When the point was made that as a sinker pitcher, he might not have a problem pitching three days in a row, Qualls didn't quite agree.

I'd wager a beer that JDJO was the one "making the point".

Qualls pitching to Pujols with a 2-0 count is stupid.
You helped defend my a "stupid post".

Lidge pitching to Pujols in that situation would have made more sense. He's got the pitch that Pujols showed he was vunerable to.

Classic, since so many people blame Pujols for Lidge's WS and '06 season performances.

Your really stretching to use the dumb card.
Lidge v. Pujols or Qualls v. Pujols? Lidge every time.

And by the way I was using Lidge for hypothetical style purposes. I don't know if he was available or not.

Second guessing Qualls vs. Pujols is ridiculous. Qualls is the best guy out of the Stros pen right now, hands down.

Lets see, the best HR hitter in baseball this year is at the plate... Which pitcher matches up better against him?

Pitcher A: Straight fastball, has struggled a lot this year. Throws a wicked slider when on, but has been known to give up mammoth homers as well lately.

Pitcher B: Heavy sinker, been en fuego lately. Probably the best bullpen option available.

Tough call.

the pitching was ineffective, but the real problem with this team is--surprise--offense. Wilson is coming around but Lane is a void that Super Burke cannot fill.

Ding!

Let's look at some May performances:
Berkman  .227/.326/.427
Ensberg  .225/.344/.480
Everett  .177/.233/.281
Lane     .158/.253/.303
Wilson   .304/.330/.373
Taveras  .262/.325/.311

Of that group, which of those would you rate as "acceptable"?  Wilson's starting to find gaps, but is showing about as much power as Taveras.  MoBerg's showing nothing but power - he's currently the living embodiment of BP's "three true outcomes".  Lane and Everett have been automatic outs, and Berkman is either more hurt than he's let on or having a major problem.

There are only two regulars who could argue they've hit worth a damn in May, and they're not all that great:

Ausmus  .275/.337/.338
Biggio  .258/.363/.381

Hmmm... I wonder why it's been a rough month?

Garner is an idiot of coarse.
