Ask And Ye Shall Maybe Receive: Season 2, Vol 5.
« on: May 19, 2006, 11:34:41 am »
2 1/2 weeks before the draft.  We'll keep this thread open through the end of the month.  1 week before the draft we'll open a draft thread.  I'll provide a break down of who's in extended spring training by position.  You freaks are free to post all draft and short-season team info and questions there.  If one of the DFE's from 2005 is signed we'll put it there too.

Kelly, Hower, and Herrforth are done for the season.  Darnell is still playing as Chabot is still alive in the Cali JUCO tournament.  I'll post updated stats for him when their season concludes.  San Jac also remains alive in the tournament but Cobler's stats, if he has any, remain elusive.

33 round Reid Kelly at Chandler-Gilbert Community College
16 games, 14 starts, 83.2IP, 70H, 20ER, 35BB, 70K, 2.15ERA, 10HBP, 5WP, 2CG

35 round Andrew Darnell at Chabot College
43G, 172AB, 67H, .390AVG, 18 doubles, 1 triple, 13 homers, 20BB, 31K, .465OBP, .733SLG

39 round Zachary Williams
drafted out of Seminole State Community College. Not on their spring roster. Don't know current location.

40 round Collin Fanning at Clarendon Junior College
On the team. No stats available.

41 round Casey McCleskey at Temple Junior College
Not listed on the current roster. Don't know current location.

43 round Jacob Hower at American River Junior College
18G, 3GS, 30.2IP, 36H, 23ER, 18BB, 27K, 6.75ERA, 4 saves

44 round Nicholas Cobler
Drafted out of Northeast Texas Community College. Now with San Jacinto Community College. No stats available.

45 round Craig Herrforth at Johnson County Community College
11G, 9GS, 39IP, 39H, 26ER, 33BB, 38K, 4.67ERA
Goin' for a bus ride.

Well they have the Astros projected to take a college Pitcher, here is there blurb:

Quote:

23. ASTROS. Another team that will take a hard look at Anderson, Houston would rather have a college pitcher. Missouri State righthander Brett Sinkbeil would be an obvious choice, assuming he recovers from an oblique strain to show his stuff again before the draft. If he can't, college righties Villanova's Kevin Mulvey, Georgia's Brooks Brown and Miami's Chris Perez would be considered.

Projected Pick: Brett Sinkbeil.

The Anderson they are refering to is a High School LHP out of Oklahoma, who is supposedly pretty polished for a HS kid, but was passed over for some other HS kids who are "higher ceiling" prospects.  But given he was first mentioned only a couple of picks before, figure he is as good a choice as any.

Patton & Salem just miss no hitter

Troy Patton retired the first 17 batters he faced before walking a batter and pitched 6 innings of no hit ball.  He struck out 7. Patomac got a one out hit in the 9th to break up the no no bid

Salem at RFK

Salem played the Potomac Nationals at RFK after the DC Nats game yesterday.  Here is the report from the Salem paper of the minor league guys getting a taste of the bigs.

The Link

There is also a nice photo slide show of the trip to the big league park

Least flattering quote of the year nominee:

"Having pitched six no-hit innings for the Avalanche on Friday and thereby feeling confident he wouldn't see action Sunday, Troy Patton followed his beef brisket with a pair of hot dogs and later went back for more.

"I'm just along for the ride," he announced while stuffing the second hot dog into his mouth. "

I love the minors.  Do you know if Salem and the PotoNats will play at RFK again this year?  I'd love to have gone but did not know about the game.

I would love to see the Express or Hooks play a game at MMP once a year.  Seems like it would be beneficial for all invovled to make that happen.

JUCO tournament field set (was: DFE report)
« Reply #12 on: May 23, 2006, 11:33:45 am »
All 10 teams for the JUCO tournament have been decided:

Broward CC (FL)
Butler CC (KS)
Temple College (TX)
San Jac North (TX)
Wallace St CC (AL)
Yavapai College (AZ)
Connors State College (OK)
Walters State CC (TN)
Potomac State College (WV)
South Suburban CC (IL)

I'll be at the tournament for the first five days, so I should get to see each team once, and I'll probably see most of them twice.  I know of McCleskey (Temple, no stats available) and Cobler (San Jac, no stats available) as Astros DFEs, so I'll keep an eye open for them.  Is there anybody else on those teams that I should look out for?

All reports are that if he can harness his control he has the highest ceiling of all our prospects, and that is saying alot given what Patton and Hirsh have shown.

What's Barzilla eating for breakfast?
« Reply #20 on: May 24, 2006, 12:25:29 pm »
I was at last Thursday's game in RR against Tucson, and he looked ok but not great, but when you turned around he had 6 (or was it 7?) IP and 3 H, and nobody really did anything after the 1st inning.  Then last night he went 9 IP with 1 H against Las Vegas.

He'll never be dominating, but might he actually become the bullpen lefty?

Well he now has below a 3 ERA! (2.88 to be exact)

That just goes to show how well he has been pitching lately.  Cause he was awful in his first few starts at AAA this year.

Last night, 7 shutout innings.

For the month of May Hirsh has 5 starts and recorded 35.2 IP, 22 H, 2 ER, 10 BB, and 25 K and an ERA of 0.50.  7 of those 10 walks were in 2 games.  He should get one more start this month, at Albuquerque.

"Dominating" may have been a bad choice of words: "overpowering" is probably better.  He certainly doesn't have the stuff to blow the ball by people.  But if he can get them out other ways, who am I to complain?

Salem Visit
« Reply #30 on: May 30, 2006, 10:10:31 am »
Had the chance to visit Salem Memorial on Friday night.  Nice stadium.  Some things that impact players #'s should be noted.

1.  Fence is 20 foot tall all around.  Takes some umph to get it out.

2.  Grass is thick and slows balls down.  Should help ground ball pitchers and slap hitters

Got to see Pedro Astacio pitch in a rehab start.  Ronnie Martinez out pitched him for the first 3 innings.  Ronnie & Evan E.  were the bright spots for the Avs that night.  Both look very good except for serving up Gopherballs.  Ronnie's gopher in the 5th was the first hit he had given up.

Salems bats are week and without their best hitter in the line up, it was painful.  After the all star break, I wouldn't be suprised to see some releases and movement to bring some life to this roster.
Always ready to go to a game.

And before somebody asks, I'm still noting numerous discrepancies with the numbers at brewcrewball.com. My numbers are coming directly from Milb.com.

So what they are saying is when Clemens pitches they don't need their best hitter in the line-up?  Seems like a perfect bone to throw are Towles to say, thanks for playing low A instead of high-A the first half of the season, your bonus for being so good is you get to catch a HOF pitcher.

But I guess PR is more important...  Seems like just seeing them both playing the field at the same time should be hype enough.  I figure Roger might have signed earlier if Koby had not been injured.  But that is me.

History shows one should believe half of what the paper prints.....most writers have lying ears.
$5 will get you 10 with the playoffs on the line, towles will be behind the dish. Stien, is a very competitive owner and  Kolby catching won't sell any more tickets.

On the lighter side.... I hear Rogers wife is going to pinch run.... she used to be a speedster on the base paths.

Cobler wasn't on the San Jac North roster in Grand Junction.  It's unclear to me whether San Jac North is the only San Jac baseball team, or if there might be different teams for different campuses.

It's the only baseball team in San Jac.  I could not find his stats but others on the team were available.  He's listed on their web roster, but I don't know his status.

Starting tonight for Salem?
« Reply #46 on: June 03, 2006, 01:04:13 pm »
I've got tickets to tonight's game in Wilmington (Salem vs. Blue Rocks). Troy Patton was originally scheduled to pitch tonight, but then one of yesterday's two games was rained out, pushing the doubleheader to today.

I can't get my wife to arrive early and sit through both games, so I'd really like to just make sure I see the game Patton pitches -- but I can't find anything anywhere to indicate which game that might be. (I've checked Salem's website, the Salem newspaper, plus BlueRocks.com and the Wilmington paper). Of course, I suppose they might not have decided or announced it, but does anyone know the answer, or know where I could find it? Many thanks.

Did you try to give the Salem office a call?  Most minor league offices are very helpful.

May stats have now been input.

On your suggestion, yes. I got a "Thank you for calling; our business hours are..." message. But, I now see that Wilmington updated their media notes on their website, and they have Patton pitching the first game. Thanks!

I love the fact that we were able to sign Darnell... the other guys I was only luke-warm on at this point, but Darnell looks to have some potential given where he was drafted and was playing.

I look forward to the new "candidates" to enter the Astros system starting tomorrow.

Darnell certainly hit well this season.  I'm not sold on him long term.  But, given the continued lack of position prospects in the org and lack of higher level talent in this year's draft signing him was a good thing.

Kelly was good, esp as a freshman.  That the Astros signed him makes me think he may have picked up a little velocity this year as well.  That's a guess on my part.

Towles suspended by Astros...

for three games:

"He said some things that were regretful whenever he was fined for being late and ignoring instructions about his health," Lind said. " ... When Ricky (Bennett, Astros assistant GM and director of player development) heard about it, he decided to suspend him."

Apparently either Mackor or Santangelo will be brought in from Salem to catch Clemens tonight.

"He said some things that were regretful"??

Perhaps they were regrettable, not regretful?
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

The same article had a section on some roster moves:

"Legends LHP Doug Arguello and IF Pedro Espinoza have been assigned to extended spring training. LHP Scott Sarver has been released. The Astros moved RHPs Chris Campos and Brad James from extended spring training to the Legends. A catcher, Jose Lopez, will report today from extended for a two-day assignment while J.R. Towles completes a suspension."

The one correction is the Campos is a LHP.

I am a bit suprised by the Lopez call up.  Can't Cavers & Kady handle it for two days?

It might be an early indication of some other moves on the horizon.

Post-All-star games and start up of SS ball ussually also involves player movement.

I can see alot of changes being made to Salem and Lexington when that happens... Not much good is going on position wise at Salem, could see major shake up if the Astros have enough personal to do it.

Kady has been on the inactive list all season.  And Cavers sucks.  (But that shouldn't matter for two more days.)
