2nd place is a big record?
« on: May 17, 2006, 12:07:30 am »
It's a big number, for sure, but a record? Um, OK.

The Link

It's not that much about you, Milo, and the call on Aaron's HR wasn't all that impressive.

No, it's not second place, it's uh..all time for left handed hitters.  See?  That's a big record when you think of it, right?  I mean, certainly there's a reason why ESPN and the rest of the media monkeys have been following Barry around all season...and it's not just hype!  It's, uh...ah...a momentous moment!  And controversial!  And, ooh...look at those shiny things!

With this in mind, how come there weren't coded balls for when Biggio was closing in on the lead-off homer record?

Is Milo saying that it IS about him?  This just seems like the media latching on to anything they can while Barry is stuck on 713.  Jayson Stark had a similar story on ESPN.com yesterday, and I didn't sense Milo's ego while reading it either.  True, Milo's call of Aaron's 714 wasn't anything terribly special, but I think it got the job done and is certainly one of the most replayed calls in baseball history.  I'd rather have an ordinary call of a historic moment than some prefabricated poetic nonsense.
"Ground ball right side, they're not gonna be able to turn two OR ARE THEY, THROW, IS IN TIME!!! WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TURN BY BRUNTLETT AND EVERETT, AND THEY CUT DOWN MABRY TO END THE GAME, AND THE ASTROS LEAD THIS NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES THREE GAMES TO ONE!!!!!"

The call of Tweet's 62nd comes to mind.  Scripted melodramatic  crapola.  Want to say it was Chip Caray, not sure though.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

The Video

I don't really have a problem with that one, the "touching first" part certainly could not have been scripted.  It reminds me a little of one of my favorite calls, Tom Cheek during the Joe Carter HR: "Touch em all, Joe, you'll never hit a bigger homerun in your life!"

I don't either, liked let the celebration happen without talking over it.

That's not the call I had in mind originally.  No idea which one I was thinking of.  Par for the course.
