Holy crap
« on: May 15, 2006, 10:36:45 pm »
I found out today that I won Chuy's Broadcaster for a Night contest for the Round Rock Express, and will be in the booth with Mike Capps for a game sometime this summer.

I think it's only for an inning, but I am approximately scared to death.

congrats!  You better start practicing with a tape player right now, so you can listen to yourself, wait, maybe you shouldn't do that!!!  also, you were mentioned in an article on astros.com.

 Where's Waldo?

Lately, there has been much talk about whether Clemens will return to baseball or retire. Why do people keep asking the same questions about him every day when nothing has changed in over a month? Please, no more Clemens questions until there is definite news whether it is good or bad. Thank you.
-- Justin P., Savannah, Tenn.

I hear ya, Justin. I think I've set a record in rolling my eyes ever since the Astros didn't offer Clemens arbitration last December. Most of the news regarding Roger so far hasn't revealed a whole lot. We're trying to determine if he has any desire to pitch this year, and if he does, whether he wants to pitch for the Astros or not. So far, he's not tipping his hand. It's sort of like a combination of playing "Where's   Waldo ?" and watching a soap opera.

Good luck.  See if you can work the phrase "slop jar full of nuts" in somehow.  That would be awesome.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

So are you expected to do color or play-by-play (as an out-of-towner, I don't know which one Mike Capps does)?

Right.  And he should therefore concentrate his preparation on inside jokes, obscure references to OWA shibboleths, and many, many double entendr?s.

Also, the thread title (Holy crap!) would work in a pinch for home run calls and other moments of import.  In lieu of "Holy Toledo!", I mean.

Well, you could hear Milo's fucking cell phone ringing for about 45 seconds during the top of the 8th tonight... so as long as you don't do anything worse than that, I guess you're as good as a HOFer.

Sounds like a lot of fun.

Oh, and give the score a lot.

You're doomed. Unless...if only there were some way you could keep track of what's going on in the Astros minor league system.  Some place where you could read all about the Astros farm teams.  Nahhh... it's a crazy idea.

Orangewhoopass. The FCC can deal with that. Especially considering current polls.

That's your 15 minutes, do the hell you'd like to.

Well that certainly would be a drawback.  On the otherhand, how many people listen to RR games on the radio?  And, do the admins want increased traffic?

That reminds me...

Am I crazy or did Milo make a very pointed remark either last night or during Monday's game about not giving the score "as often as some people would like us to."

Perhaps I just dreamed it or something, but I could have sworn he said something like that during one of these Giants games, and with an awful lot of disdain in his voice.

Did you hear JD in the 8th last night?  He was going on about some facts about the '86 team, and Brownie chastised him for giving up the answer for tonight's trivia question.  JD replied with something like "exactly how many people do you think are still watching this?"

I tuned in Milo last night and was flabergasted that he gave the score (6-2) about 3 times in the space of a couple of minutes, of course at the end of the inning he mentioned the score for the 4th time but never did I hear what inning it was...
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

I was listening to a Tigers/Twins game recently on the local affiliate station in the car. I came in about an hour late, so I was hoping they'd catch me up. I listened for a more than 2 innings, and although I did get the score a couple of times and one scoring recap, no one ever gave the inning!! They went to a few commercial breaks and even had a pitching change, but they never gave the inning. The Tigers radio guys are usually good if unspectacular, but that was ridiculous.

Waldo, instead of saying, "And I want to say 'Hello' to Elizabeth out in Temple, who is always listening in," I think you might say something like, "And I want to say 'Hello' to Foghorn down in Houston, who is always listening in and I am pretty sure is ready for the Express to drop the mutha-fuckin' soup bone on their opponent this inning."

Stuff like this might lead to longer-range employment for you in this line of work, you never know.
