has me white knuckling in every appearance. Yesterday's appearance is a case in point: 23 pitches, behind in counts 2-0, full counts galore, yet three swinging K's. Don't get me wrong, he got the save and we needed it. But I aint a getting any younger! Thank God for blood pressure pills.

Only got to hear the game, not see it.  With his fastball setup to the slider, was he coming back in over the plate more instead of trying to nibble that outside corner 99% of the time?

Related but seperate, do you know why he stays away from inside low and high so much?  Seems like his velocity would allow him to throw that pitch over and over again to jam all but the strongest hitters...

imo:

he has been bouncing the slider, many times in front of the plate or in the LH batter's box. his FB has been high and away to LH.

i think he is opening up his left shoulder and side too soon and that means his body falls off to the left and that his arm is lagging behind his body. he either rushes his arm to catch up and yanks the pitch or the arm stays way behind and leaves the pitch high and away.

this flaw screws up his release point and location. i think keeping his front shoulder closed longer is the first thing he needs to do.

Yes it was, but the one the pitch before was a good one.   Valentin fouled that one off.   And I was shocked phillips didn't go for the 3-2 slider.   It had good break and decent location.   It's not like he's faced Brad before.

Phillips looked like he knew what was coming.  If it wasn't a fastball he wasn't swinging.  It was a damned good pitch though and that is the pitch Lidge used to get 99% of batters to flail at.  That was very good bat discipline by Phillips.

There was no way Phillips took that pitch legitimately. He didn't even start the bat and it was one of Brad's sharper sliders of the inning. He must have figured he was getting a slider in the dirt. I bet if Lidge threw him a fastball down the middle there Phillips would have just stood there with the bat on his shoulder.

Phillips had a total of 3 walks yesterday. He had taken a grand total of 1 walk in his first 17 games...

Yeah I'd like him to reel off 20 straight saves and just totally eliminate any problems from his memory and have his mechanics firing on all cylinders.
