But why are they "jumping"?

"Right now, the way the ball's jumping in our park, we're definitely not relaxed with any score right now," Lidge said.

UnholyToledo commented in another thread about this, so I'll move it over here.

Allegedly the balls are on steroids

The real dumbass quote is in this one

Quote:

They have different shifts down there, and they take out the baseballs at different times. When the workers come on, the first hour or two of their shifts, their fingers and their hands are strong. And then the longer, obviously, they work, they get [more tired], so those balls are not wound quite as tight. So you take the balls that are wound in that first hour or so, they will go farther. Teams are using the tightly-wound balls.

And some other stupid shit is here

Quote:

Stone, the former Cubs broadcaster now working for ESPN and WSCR-AM, agreed strongly with Harrelson. Both are former players.

"The first batch [this year] is wound pretty tight," he said. "You know by watching the ball leave the bat and going through the infield. A fielder takes two steps and the ball is by him.

Oye. Vamos, vamos.

I've heard 1,000 explanations about how weather effects the flight of the ball and I'm not 100% sure about any of them.

But it seems to me that humidity (more water and gunk in the air) would slow down the ball.  The ball's flying out everywhere, not just at MMPUS.  Let the steroid/juiced ball conspiracy theories abound....

The lighter the air, the easier and farther the ball should travel.

Humid air is less dense than dry air.

Let's try to avoid this discussion again. Even though it seems wet air is heavier, it is less dense (see BDs link) so the ball will travel farther.

Humidity is not "gunk", it's just water.  And water is lighter than air, so humid air is less dense than dry air.  All else being equal, the ball travels farther in humid air.

This is one of my favorite repetitive discussions.

And frisbee sliders. Yeah, those may have something to do with it. I'll put the breakdown at these percentages:

50%  Global warming
30%  Strong hands on the balls (NTTAWWT)
19%  MLB conspiracy to replace power numbers lost from steroid cessation
1%    Suspect pitches

Humid air might be an answer, but trust me, when the homeruns are flying out at record numbers this *early* in the season (when pitchers are supposed to be waaaay ahead of the hitters), then something other than just air is involved.

Juiced ball?  Maybe.  But I would put everything on the table and say it's probably a little of everything.

Vince Van Patten:  Oooh, Noe is going all-in on "a little of everything".  What a bold move, here Mike.

Mike Sexton:  You gotta like this play, Vince.  Noe in Austin, going all-in, forcing Foggy to make a decision.  Let's check out his hole cards...

VVP:  Wow, look at that.  Foggy has "a little from Column A and a little from Column B".  We're looking at a split pot here if Foggy calls...

MS:  Let's see if Foggy has the co-jones to call Noe's all-in....
You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you. Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here, close. You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?
