They let Damon get away well before Crisp was in the picture, and I'm not saying they should have re-signed Damon. I'm sure they already had their sights on a deal for Crisp before Damon slipped away. I'm just saying that they seemed pretty anxious to sign a center fielder to a multi-year deal after the PR sting they felt when Damon left.
The Red Sox have plenty of money, which translates to options. I'm just wondering why they locked themselves into this option so early in the game. Did they really think Crisp's value would rise that much by the time he became a FA at the end of the year that they felt compelled to lock him in at the "bargain" rate of $5 mil per year?
