Sure.  He's a nice player who can hit, run, and play defense.  Crisp is a much cheaper (and younger) replacement for Damon.  $5 million per year sounds about right to me.

I disagree. I think Crisp is very good player, and probably better than Damon will be over the next three years.

Crisp is only 26, and has improved offensively each year. With the money the Sox can throw around anyway, $5 mil/per is a bargain for a solid center fielder.

Let's see...

Damon will cost the Yankmees $52M for the next 4 years.
Crisp will cost the Beaners about $18M for the same period.

The past two years the stats are about even but Crisp still has a chance to get better while Damon will be treading water like crazy to not drop off too fast...

Crisp is also more likely to stay healthy during the remainder of his contract...

They let Damon get away well before Crisp was in the picture, and I'm not saying they should have re-signed Damon.  I'm sure they already had their sights on a deal for Crisp before Damon slipped away.  I'm just saying that they seemed pretty anxious to sign a center fielder to a multi-year deal after the PR sting they felt when Damon left.  

The Red Sox have plenty of money, which translates to options.  I'm just wondering why they locked themselves into this option so early in the game.  Did they really think Crisp's value would rise that much by the time he became a FA at the end of the year that they felt compelled to lock him in at the "bargain" rate of $5 mil per year?

They traded for a CF to replace the one they lost. They like what they see in the new guy. Was it PR sting damage control? No. It was just couple of typical baseball transactions. No spin needed. This kind of manuevering goes on outside of BoMass and NYC too.
