Ballparks by Munsey and Suppes article

Here is a quote from an article on the above website--

"The retractable roof ballparks in Arizona and Houston are having trouble growing grass. I suspect it's not much better in Seattle or Milwaukee. Their solution has been to replace the turf periodically. I've heard reports that the turf gets completely replaced three of four times a year."

Is this true?

I know they replaced the turf in some areas last season (Astros bullpen, RF & a few others) but I don't think 3-4 times a year is correct.

There was some adjustment during the first year, but that's all I've heard about.  MMPUS is now 7 years old, and I haven't heard of any problems since the first year.

It may have been correct in 2004, when they replaced the turf specifically for the All-Star game, in addition to their normal routine.  They may do it for the playoffs, too.

They did it last season in the middle of September (last season was tough on the grass because they were not able keep the roof open as much as they wanted due to weather).  They also replaced all of the turf during this past off-season.  They switched to a different kind of grass from the previous year (parks without a roof will sometimes bring in new turf after the season is over).

Depends on if they're talking about the entire field or just sections of it.  I just remember watching the first game ever at MMPUS, when the turf was no older than a couple of weeks, and you could tell.  Hasn't looked like that since, from what I've seen, but for all we know, they rip out the turf and replant it in February.
