Berkman's defense at 1st has been spectacular so far, and has made it a lot easier to not miss Bags so much.  That double play to get Soriano off third was a thing of beauty.

For some reason, there is this impression out there that Berkman is brutal with the glove.  I'm not sure where that comes from.  He's a solid outfielder and pretty darn good firstbaseman.  He always has been.

I think it's because his absent-mindedness and aloofness at times (i.e. starting to walk off the field with only 2 outs), in addition to his girth, has given the impression to some that he doesn't know what he's doing in the field. Maybe now that he's involved in the action more, he can begin to show otherwise. He seems to be off to a good start.

And that's my point. I think people were often blinded by his goofyness in the OF that they didn't get a good look at his fielding. Now that he's in a position to be slightly less goofy, his fielding abilities might be more noticeable to those who don't pay as close attention as others.

Well he isn't the most graceful, but I have to say I think he's pretty good.  Last year he was even less nimble in the field but I think last year's performance was obviously hindered by his knee injury and subsequent lack of strength in the leg.  Setting aside that he still had a solid year offensively, some mental lapses on his part are all some people bother to consider.  

The other thing is while he doesn't look fast, in motion,  he seems to get from point A to point B faster than most realize.  He just doesn't look pretty doing it.

Even after almost a year, it is hard to forget how good Bagwell was at 1st, too. Berkman is living in the shadow of one of the greats. It isn't fair, completely, to compare the two, but it does sit in the back of the mind.

I always thought Berkman fielded fine. He may be better than that.

Berkman just hit his fourth HR of the season. Man, how great is it to see him get off to a strong start? Now if Lane and Ensberg could get hot......

I never thought he was brutal, but he has made a couple of plays I was pleasantly surprised (not shocked) he could make.

Now this, we can have a healthy disagreement.

Agreed.  The Nats are getting kicked around by the pundits (should I be stopping right there?) but I see their batting order and think it's pretty solid.  They could use some better performances from some guys, but what team can't?  Seriously, their roster has Vidro, Guillen, Nick Johnson and Soriano.  All solid players.  Add in Zimmerman, who looks to be a good young player (both defensively and offensively).  Schneider is a good catcher.  They have a couple journeyman types in Clayton and Byrd.  Their pitching seemed fair, if not young in spots (Majewski-26, Cordero-24), but the starting rotation has solid contributors, accept for Drese (whom I developed a dislike for as a Ranger).  

The Marlins... boy, that's going to be a scary lineup if they continue as they started in that series.  Hermida, Jacobs, Willingham, and Ramirez did well for young'uns.  Ramirez redeemed himself, to a degree, defensively after game 1.
