Justice/Ausmus Love Affair
« on: April 06, 2006, 03:37:55 pm »
In Justice's "blog" he indicates that he was tempted to write off the season, when overheard by Ausmus.  "Do it.  You don't let the facts get in the way of one of your columns anyway," Ausmus apparently says.  Also, Justice has taken to referring to Ausmus as "Mr. Dartmouth."

If you're Richard Justice, and one of baseball's most intelligent, thoughtful, and respected players sees you as little more than sink residue, where do you go from there?  Oh, yeah, to nationally syndicated radio shows where you are referred to as "respected Houston Chronicle sportswriter Richard Justice."

The national media has always had a keen understanding of the Houston scene.  What you do is what Justice has done. Write an article that sets up a strawman, then refutes it.  Include anecdotes that makes it seem like he's rubbing elbows with the guys.  Here he is trading insults with Ausmus.  Now he's bantering back and forth with Pettitte.  He exaggerates a knowing wink about the opinion baseball players have of all sportswriters.  In this scene he's listening to the concerns of fans with the expectation he'll run right to Astros management to deliver them personally.  In the end, he wraps up his column, shaped like the Oroborus, with the sage advice of a seasoned writer and lets us know he'll not let the Astros off the hook if they don't live up to our expectations.  He's suggesting he has inside connections, yet he's looking out for the common know nothing fan.

Justice is a tool.

On a side note about smarts, the Marlins announcers last night said that Wilson was validictorian of his high school class.  Case in point of his intelligence was his starting the contract talks with Purpura.  This guy's going to be a nice addition to the clubhouse.

That was the most compelling criticism I've ever read on OWA.

If I have to read one more self-reference in the Chronicle to their stupid tombstone thing, as if the Chronicle being utterly and completely wrong and bandwaggoners about the ability of the Astros to come back last season is somehow a badge of honor, I'm going to vomit.
