Ask And Ye Shall Maybe Receive: Season 2, Vol 1.
« on: April 06, 2006, 11:08:00 am »
The minor league season starts today!  All four full-season teams are in action starting with Corpus Christi at 2 pm.  Also of note, tonight is the first post-Katrina baseball game in New Orleans giving us more than one reason to celebrate today.

This is the first sorta-weekly "Ask" thread of the new season.  So, fire away!

RE: MNDR 4/6 - as reported the Lex pitching probables are:
Levi Romero
Ryan McKeller
Douglas Arguello
Sean Walker

No mention of Bogusevic at all by the Herald-Leader.  We'll follow the rotation and if there appears to be an issue we'll do our best to find out what's happening.

Ok, someone needs to explain to me why our #1 pick last year isn't the #1 starter in Lex this year...  I don't recall hearing anything about him being hurt or being moved to a bullpen/closer role.

He's definitely going to be a starter.  We got word from someone in a position to know that he had a bit of a sore arm in ST so that may have pushed him back just a bit.

Thanks.

BTW, for those wanting to listen to the CC game today.  Seems there is only a feed from San Antonio's side.

Supposedly at this  Link, but I am having trouble getting it to make any sound.  Maybe you will have better luck than I.

Working for me as I write.  And, as I write House homers and Pence singles up the middle.  Currently tied 1-1.

yep, I noticed it stopped, and when I started it again got some pre-recorded message, so I killed my window and started again.  It worked.  So I basically caught it near the end of the top of the 1st.  So I heard their HR and House and Pence...

Anderson had a walk in the first, but a MAJOR base-running gaffe where he was doubled up because he broke on a fly ball that was caught, and he never went back.  So they just tossed it over to 2B, and he was out.  Don't know how he got to 2B, but that was where he was doubled off at.

Fagan just hit a Double to drive in Pence... although game log is another forum, isn't it?

EDITED IN: BTW the commercials are pretty funny.  Wondering if some of them are just for internet though (or if nobody really listened to the words of the songs in some of them)

I noticed Mike Rodriguez is on the Express roster.  I recall reading something about him but can't find it and, for the life of me, can't recall what was written.  I've been looking thru all the threads since the start of the year but can't find anything.  Can anyone provide a quick rundown on where this guy fits into the prospect/minor league fodder scheme?  His stats from last year don't look shabby but there's always more to the story.

Sorry if I'm missing an obvious update somewhere...

RR is playing NO on MLBTV right now.  Link can be found on the astros website.

Honestly, I hadn't thought to ask anyone.  But, I'd venture to guess the Astros want to see what M-Rod can do at AAA with an eye toward him being a 4th or 5th outfielder.  He was drafted for his speed out of Miami a couple of rounds ahead of Jimerson.  He's more of a slap hitter who at the big league level could be a defensive replacement/get on base kind of pinch hitter.

Tip Fairchild will apparently be the other starter. Which of the five moves to the bully when Bogusevic is ready remains to be seen.

I was a bit suprised to see Tolbert batting lead off for Salem (although he made the move look brilliant 3/5 with an SB and stranded on 3rd twice). Is that an indication of the lack of overall speed on the Avs?

BTW I love the MNDR feature.  Saves me from checking several sites to check on the progress of former Greeneville players.

Lack of overall speed, check.

Lack of overall talent, double check.  Tolbert is probably the best everyday player at Salem right now and he looks like he might be a 4th or 5th outfielder type.  Catcher is a strikeout waiting to happen.  First base is populated by a guy who has famously not lived up to expectations.  The middle infield is populated by career minor leaguers.  Third base has Hart who is athletic but raw.  Left field is Torbert.  Center field has a career minor leaguer.  Right field has what appears to be a guy headed to career minor leaguer status.

And speaking of Tip Fairchild....

"Fairchild was pleased his fastball was clocked in the low 90s, especially this early in the year, and said the Florida heat seemed to help his curve ball."

"My last two outings I went at people," said Fairchild, who gave up one run in his final eight innings of work. "I had command of three pitches."

Maybe I missed the note, but does anyone know why Felipe Paulino del Guiduce (I *love* that name) left after only an inning in his start?  Was it rain?

Game Notes:

After OF Beau Torbert doubled to lead off the bottom of the 1st inning, the sky opened up and the game was suspended.

Other News and Notes:

(1) The game will be continued on Saturday before the regularly-scheduled game with Torbert on at second and no one out in the bottom of the first inning.

The Link

Felipe Paulino pitched 1 inning in game #1--that would be the top half of the 1st that was played Friday.

C David Kady is on the inactive list
« Reply #21 on: April 11, 2006, 11:24:40 am »
I was really suprised to see him even on the roster to begin with.  He made most of his appearances on the field in Greeneville the last two seasons in the 1st base coaches box. Although he was Brad James' personal catcher towards the end of the year.  I think he serves as quasi coach.  The guy must love baseball to hang on the way he does.

Speaking of which, anyone have an over/under on how many games Danny will appear in this year at Corpus Christie?

And whatever happened to Chris Tremie?  I thought sure he would slide into a coaching job somewhere after setting a modern minor league record of appearing in games for 43 consecutive seasons.

Apparently Capps had already mentioned it several times on previous RR broadcasts, but he said again tonight that Tremie is the roving catching instructor in the Indians' organization. He'll also serve as a coach at SS Mahoning Valley.

Early observations
« Reply #25 on: April 12, 2006, 11:37:05 am »
Ok it is WAY to early for anything definative, but based on what we have seen in the first week.  It seems Salem is going to have trouble scoring runs and Lex is having trouble keeping runs from scoring.  Luckily the Legends have been scoring enough.

Also seems like RR has some holes hitting (everybody has seemed to turn into Chewy).  And 3 musketeers (Zobrist, Ash, Pence) are still batting well together in CC.

Seems each team is either good in pitching or good in batting but none are both...  But like I said it is still VERY early.

Early on, in my view, each of the players in the minors is doing about as expected with maybe a few exceptions.  In regards to you comments, I do think Lex will pitch better than expected.

Okaaay...

Entering play last night, the Legends staff had 2 shutouts and had allowed just 4 earned runs in 38 IP. Even with last night's game (which was about bad defense, not bad pitching), the Legends ERA of 1.72 leads the Sally in the early going.

And Salem is 3rd in the Carolina League in runs scored.

Salem & Lex have games going on right now.  I can get Lex audio but not Salem because MILB doesn't have the link up.

Salem is getting baffled by the Fredrick pitcher Liz who in the first three innings he has 8 k's and 3 walks.  The only none K was a foul pop.

Salem audio is there.  They have it listed for noon eastern.

Liz apparently is a flame thrower.  There is no baffling.  Salem hitters are swinging late and missing.

As you'll read in MNDR tomorrow, Salem was no-hit today.  Liz went just those 5.  After he left the game Salem got good swings at the relievers.  Great plays in the field and a very generous error call preserved the no-no.

The runner who reached on the error was Torbert who has been on base in all six games so far and this was his first game without a hit.
