Oswalt possibly retiring after 2010?
« on: March 31, 2006, 02:44:27 pm »
I don't know if this is just ESPN smoke, but their stupid Insider actually has something I might be interested in.  This preview of an article by Buster Olney indicates that Oswalt plans to reevaluate his career and possibly retire after playing for 10 years, which would be after the 2010 season. Can someone with access to ESPN Insider read the article and attempt to determine what is being said/speculated?

Here's a blurb from the preview:

Quote:

"Ten years," Roy Oswalt says, again. He glances into the rearview mirror. "My goal is to play 10 years, and then I'll figure out what to do after that."

I'd say this topic is about the only thing I can think of that's less relevent that what Roger Clemens thinks about playing this season.

That depends on how you define relevance. Relevant to this season or even next? you're right, not very relevant. Relevant to MY general interest in Astros baseball, it's at least relevant enough to me to ask the question.

All major leaguers want to complete 10 years.  Full retirement pension kicks in if they do.  Biggio had the same goal and he lasted 19 years.

Basically, the article says that Roy loves his home in Weir, and that he wants to go back there full time as soon as he can.  But he leaves the door open to playing longer.  He said the only thing that might guarantee him playing beyond ten years is if he has a son.  He'd like to play long enough for his boy to see him in the big leagues.  We must now all offer the Luca Brasi blessing for the Oswalts, "and may their [next] child be a masculine child."

Thanks. I figured it was something like that, but the Insider preview piqued my interest enough to find out more.

It was a pretty interesting view into Oswalt's life outside Houston and the MLB.  Not that it's a surprise but he seems like a down to earth guy, based on the article.  The guy is putting his new bulldozer to work, building what I'm sure is a tank, but Olney called a lake, on his new 1000 acre spread.  Either way, it's still alot of work.

There is a story about Roy's grandfather working lumber until he neared 80 and then growing water-melons, weeding his 40 acre water-melon patch by hand because his tractor equipment was ill-equiped for the job.

Basically, it was one of those warm-fuzzy articles where you get to feel like you now have insight into what makes the guy tick and how he inherited his tireless work ethic.  At the very least I can appreciate why he says, in essensce, he doesn't dread life after baseball but he loves the competition.

I don't know if "tank" is used to much extent outside of Texas.  My relatives in Alabama are not familiar with the term, instead using "pond" for a small, man made body of water.

Useless information, but there you have it.

Even more useless, but... I've grown up in Texas and never heard the word "tank" to refer to a small manmade body of water. Odd.

Yes.  A small manmade body of water located in Texas is a tank.  Or more precisely, a stock tank.  This may be truer for the Western and Southern parts of the state than the East.

Really odd that you haven't heard it before here in Texas.  Most of the small manmade bodies of water on property my members of my family own are called "tank."  Some of them even stocked fish in them.

Always just heard them called stock ponds. Tank makes me think of an above-ground um... tank. Well, it's a big enough state, some stuff isn't going to be prevalent everywhere. Just look at "feeder"

So that would make it a fish tank, eh?

Seriously, I've never heard a Texan call his watering hole a "pond", only city slickers would use such a term.

Ah, no... I'm talking about the equivalent of an above-ground septic tank, except for drankin' water. Septica tank, oil tank, water tank... that kinda tank.

Plus, I'm not country folk or deep piney woods Grew up on the outer edges of suburbia (which is darned near the city limits nowadays). So, pond is what I've always heard it called.

Right, a drinking water tank. My well pumps into a drinking water tank that stores water for human use. Potable water.

Yep, city slicker. Anyone that totes a laptop to a ball game is a city slicker.

Deep pineywoods is right.

Haha! Only did that that one season... then the Palm a couple years, and then just plain old paper. Still got one scorecard kicking around where your son took over those duties for a couple innings. Good seats, good time I'm bummed I'll miss this opening day... first one I haven't been to in 10 years.

Wait a minute: he has the same birthday as his dad?  Or maybe I misread "today" to mean "he just turned 15 today" instead of "he's currently 15".

Either way, happy birthday to you!

New job, unfortunately. I betcha you won't find anyone in public accounting at a ST game. Stupid "busy season" concept, heh. 15, eh? Like father like son. Happy Birthday to both of you!

Yep, he was born on my 30th B-Day, which was kinda cool because instead of feeling old, I was passing out cigars.

Thanks!
