Couple of thoughts...
« on: March 28, 2006, 01:14:46 pm »
...sure to be annihilated.  Did Craig Wilson come off the market?  Was the Pirates asking price to high?

Supposedly they were asking for a starter.  Would any of the prospects for 5th starter do?  Say Astacio and another decent prospect.

You'd have to start Willy T in RR, but he'd then be insurance if any of: Berkman, C. Wilson, Lane, or P. Wilson land on the DL.  It would also create a lineup with 5-6(6 if you think Bidge could do it again) 25+ HR guys in the starting lineup.  Sure he'd K alot but who cares batting 6th.  He still gets on base at a decent percentage.

On a side note, it doesn't seem like early to mid May would be out of the question for Clemens, should he return.  He was already up to 5 innings in the WBC and continues to throw (albeit batting practice).  Seems like 1 or 2 starts in the minors would be more than enough.

Seems to me that the story of Spring '04 is Carlos Hernandez. According to Pravata's latest The Link, he will join the club on April 12th after a couple of starts at RR.

Amazing. I (and many others) had him written off. I always thought it was such a pity, because his stuff was amazing before that dive into second base. Now, after being a non-roster invitee, Carlos will be in the Major Leagues in April.

Amazing.
He breezed him, one more time!

Interesting idea POTS (wow you are one of the originals from way way back aren't you? remember BBT?), C. Wilson can really hit, (I'd rather have him than Preston although that would probably have put Berkman back in the OF, and C. Wilson at 1st)but alas we have P.Wilson already and he is one of those Possible big power, but Probable big strikeout kind of guys...not sure we need another, we already have that all or nothing kind of offensive attack, if we make any more moves I'd be more interested in getting a contact hitter....also I really hate that Bags is gone but I love getting Willie back in CF, and I don't want the Stros to mess with that...
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

One little hiccup with doing that is if Carlos gets the call then the Astros would likely have wasted Buchholz's first 2 weeks of the season.  Considering all the arms in the bullpen the likelihood of Buchholz seeing significant in game action in the first 8 games is very unlikely.

Excellent use of the AP graphic by the Chron, there. REAL informative.

True, he will strikeout, but other than sac flies, Everett and Ausmus hit behind the 5th and 6th guys, I say swing away.   Luke Scott is seemingly the only other guy we could expect pop from should Preston, Berkman or Lane miss time.  And with Scott comes the uncertainty that he's never accomplished it before at the Major league level.

Don't get me wrong I think the Astros offense will be fine, not great but fine.  Craig Wilson just seems intriguing because it seems like an obvious buy low proposition.  If Pittsburgh is really that down on him, after a few down months why not.  They gave up on Ramirez too soon.  Is it possible they are letting another slip away.

And yes, I was around from the beginning, from fastball to AC to here, no other site with Astros/baseball knowledge.  Never prominent but always lurking.

Maybe if they shrunk it down some more it would be even more useful.

Carlos is a pitcher for the 'Stros in my 2005 MVP Baseball game.  He's in the pen for long relief work but it's good to see that reality may reflect the game.  Carlos would probably have the last starter spot were it not for my created character, Lord Velocity, the junkballer with maxed out stats and 3 perfect games and 4 Cy Youngs in 4 seasons.

Clearly I have already gone quite mad.  With players names Lord Velocity, who has a backstory even worse than his moniker, who could argue otherwise.

I find it amusing that "Lord Velocity" is a junkballer.  Madness indeed.

Back to reality:  regarding Munson/Carlos making the team, is there an open spot on the 40-man?

All the pitchers in the game throw a 4 seamer...his is clocked at around 102.  The other pitchers I selected were the knuckleball, screwball, forkball, and palmball.  So while the majority of his pitchers are junk, his fastball could fairly be said to be his bread and butter.

Horrible, I know.  It's even worse--he's only 5'6''.

This gives me hope of fulfilling my dream as a mlb pitcher.  Although my fastball tops out only slightly higher than Bagwells.

Hahah.  You know, in my MVP Baseball, the Brewers have a pitcher called Eric Downs, who is listed as a lefty but throws righty, and only has 2 pitches: a fastball and splitter, both 83mph.  I traded for him just so I could rename him to "Downs Syndrome."

I'm at the point where many of the characters are made by the game.  There are some pretty awful ones, but then there's some ridiculously good ones as well.  The Brewers have this player who is an old fat guy who still manages to get a hit almost every at bat.  I don't recall his name, so I'm not sure if it's randomly generated or common to all games.  If I had to play without my created characters I would not be doing so well.
