Houston Chron July 3,1994

After toying with the idea for two weeks, Astros manager
Terry Collins went radical Saturday night and moved Jeff Bagwell
from first base to right field against the Chicago Cubs....

Bagwell played seven innings in right before moving back to
first base. He handled only one fly ball and fielded three balls on
the ground without difficulty. He also hit his 26th home run -- and
Bagwell's bat was the main reason Collins made the unorthodox move....


  Collins wanted to get Sid Bream in the lineup. Bream, the
Astros' backup first baseman, had not started since June 5 and was
making only his fourth start of the season. But Collins didn't want
to put Bagwell's bat on the bench....

""I was just glad he didn't kill himself,'' Collins said
after the game...

""I ran out there and it was like people were saying "What
are doing out here? Did you come out to sign autographs?' ''
Bagwell said. ""I didn't know what I was doing out there either."

The assist occured when Kevin Roberson for the Cubs attempted to stretch a single to right into a double.  Bagwell's throw in caught him in a run down.  The out occured however when Derrick May tried to take advantage of the run down to score from second, Biggio skipped a throw to Caminiti who got May attempting to dive back to third.

Which gives him a 1.000 zone rating, tied for the best in baseball history.

They should put that on his plaque in Cooperstown.

What about that OPS (2.667)?  That's got to be the highest career number for a RF, right?

Think of it: for several years, Bagwell was wasted at 1B while Derek Bell roamed RF.  What were they thinking?

Somebody would have to crunch the Retrosheet event files, but then those aren't freely available from 1993 to 1999 and at all prior to 1959.  I think Bagwell is in the top 10 all-time in assists by a first baseman.
